Book Description
Like no other text on the market, JUVENILE JUSTICE: SYSTEM, PROCESS, AND LAW provides a balanced engaging and detailed look at real juvenile justice-the system, the process, and the law. Written by two authorities on the subject, del Carmen and Trulson's new text is organized by the logical and chronological sequencing of the process, making it easier for students to understand and remember, and helping them differentiate the juvenile justice system from the adult criminal justice system. Based on the authors' many years of hands-on, practical experience in the field, the text includes a wealth of interesting narrative illustrations that provide students with a realistic picture of the juvenile justice system. JUVENILE JUSTICE clearly and effectively introduces students to the various phases and complex nuances of juvenile law as they relate to the juvenile justice system, process, policy, and theory.
Customer Reviews:
Crimestudent.......2005-10-22
This text by del Carmen and Trulson is perhaps one of the best texts on the market. As a graduate student, I have taught Juvenile Justice and Juvenile Delinquency numerous times, and expect to following the completion of doctoral school.
What most impresses me about the book is that as a fairly new professor, the book is very organized and follows the juvenile system and process in a logical order, including all the necessary details without an overbearing encyclopedia like approach. This helps those just starting out, and I would assume old hats at teaching.
It is obvious the authors' experience in the field of juvenile justice and juvenile law, for they are able to explain sometimes complex subjects with ease and excellent example. The information in the text could be taught in Idaho or Florida, and the lessons about juvenile justice, process, and law are still relevant.
An added bonus is that the extra materials are outstanding. This text includes powerpoint lectures for each chapter. Each powerpoint is detailed and follows the text exactly--unlike other texts which simply do not do this. Perhaps the best part about the extras is the instructor manual and test bank. The questions are outstanding, for they do not overly focus on small and picky details in the text, rather they focus on main points that any professor would teach.
In sum, the best book on the market and I have seen/used many.
A Juvenile Justice Primer.......2005-10-14
Perhaps one of the most widely recognized and respected scholars in the field of criminal justice is Rolando V. del Carmen, the Distinguished Professor of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University, who has produced countless texts, book chapters, and articles over the past several decades.
His most recent effort is Juvenile Justice: The System, Process, and Law, written with Chad R. Trulson, Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of North Texas and one of Dr. del Carmen's former students. In this text the authors provide a comprehensive and scholarly overview of the American juvenile justice system.
In addition to providing the reader with a sufficient theoretical and historical foundation, the book, comprised of fourteen chapters, explains in detail the various stages of the juvenile justice system through a rational progression. The chapters cover such topics as: theories and measurements of juvenile offending; the role of police in addressing juvenile crime; intake and diversion; status offenders; dependent and neglected youth; juvenile victimization; the detention process and certification as an adult offender; the national court system; adjudication, disposition, and appeals; juvenile probation and parole; institutional corrections; juveniles and the death penalty; students' rights and school crime; and a look to the future.
Missing from the text - which is a blessing - is the clutter of unnecessary pictures. Rather, the authors have included tables and exhibits that bear a strong relationship with the subject matter. Too, they have included occasional scenarios designed to promote student discussion. Each of the book's chapters begins with an outline and points to be learned, and is concluded with a summary of relevant points, review questions, and a list of key terms and definitions. In addition, relevant websites are provided for further research.
The text contains three appendices relevant to the study of the juvenile justice system. Appendix A provides U. S. Surpeme Court decisions relating to juveniles, and Appendix B lists the location of juvenile laws state by state. The final appendix provides the reader with guidance on accessing and interpreting court cases.
Juvenile Justice: The System, Process, and Law is an excellent undergraduate text. The approach taken by the authors in crafting this book will enhance the learning experience by those who use it. Rolando V. del Carmen and Chad R. Trulson are to be commended for their contribution to criminal justice scholarship.
Book Description
From the Foreword:
"Wedged squarely between the mandate to assure due process, the compelling State interest in protecting and rehabilitating minor children, geometrically expanding caseloads, rapidly eroding resources, and an unprecedented escalation in public demands for "pounds of flesh" to assuage our fears of juvenile crime, the Nation's juvenile courts are finding it increasingly difficult to move young offenders through the legal process with dispatch.
This unique volume is the first major study of processing delays in the history of U.S. juvenile courts. Funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Delays in Juvenile Justice Sanctions Project was conducted at the National Center for Juvenile Justice, the research division of the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges.
The speed of the juvenile justice process is a crucial element in its fairness and effectiveness. Nobody benefits when the juvenile justice system takes six months to respond to the first suspected burglary of a 14-year-old youth. If innocent, the juvenile lives unjustly under suspicion for six months. If not innocent, the juvenile is allowed to continue behavior that could eventually lead to more serious social harm and result in more severe legal sanctions. Six months of waiting may mean that the juvenile justice system misses an opportunity to intervene swiftly in the early stages of a budding criminal career and the community continues to lose confidence in an essential public institution charged with protecting the public safety and public welfare."
From the Preface:
"Chapter 1 of this volume discusses the social, legal, and organizational issues related to delays in the juvenile justice system. Chapter 2 presents findings from the research literature on the causes of delay in both the juvenile court and the adult justice system. Chapter 3 summarizes findings from a survey of judges, attorneys, and administrators from 123 local juvenile justice systems. Chapter 4 presents three case studies of delinquency processing practices and delay problems in urban juvenile courts. Chapter 5 analyzes national patterns in delinquency case processing time using delinquency case records contributed to the National Juvenile Court Data Archive by jurisdictions across the country. Chapter 6 presents the project's conclusions and recommendations for juvenile justice professionals and policy makers."

Book Description
Juvenile Justice System: Law and Process is an introduction to the procedures and law of the entire juvenile system, civil and criminal. It bridges the gap between introductory juvenile delinquency texts and law school case-texts.
This book illustrates the inner workings of the juvenile justice system with authentic case law, research, and behavioural sciences theory. Readers will see children through the eyes of parents, police, social workers, defending attorneys, prosecuting attorneys, judges, and others who impact upon the child in his or her journey through the system. Since each state has created its own juvenile justice system, the book provides a detailed overview of some of the ranging differences nationally and makes order of what is a very decentralized system.
The second edition is updated with many new court cases as well as tests and exercises at the end of each chapter to help students learn the material. Such topics covered include: search and seizure, investigation and interrogation, the justice process for delinquent (criminal) youth, child abuse and neglect, crimes against children, child custody, and termination of parental rights.
-New courtcases throughout.
-New topics such as: custody, parental rights, and abuse.
-Offers "brain exercises" for students.

Book Description
In 1992 a Concerted Action Programme (CAP) was initiated by Peter Sijmons with the purpose of intensifying collaborations between 16 European laboratories working on plant-parasitic nematodes. The four-year programme entitled `Resistance mechanisms against plant-parasitic nematodes' focused on molecular aspects of the interaction between sedentary nematodes and plants on the model system Arabidopsis and on novel resistance strategies. Funding was provided mainly for exchange visits between collaborating laboratories and for the organization of annual meetings. During the last annual meeting which was held in May 1996 in Toledo, Spain, Carmen Fenoll initiated the production of this volume. The book presents a series of up-to-date reviews, each written by one of the participating laboratories, which include the scientific progress achieved in the frame of this CAP but are by no means limited in scope to this work.

Classic Alchemical Treatise.......2007-04-19
It is difficult to write a review of such a book. It is, perhaps, one of the more famous Alchemical Treatise to be available due to its beautifully symbolic paintings, first published in 1582. While this, along with many of the other older Alchemical works from the masters are very difficult to read and grasp, this seemed to have more logic within its writings than others, so it would appear less rambling. I decided myself to step away from all the modern psychological interpretations of Alchemy as I feel it does somewhat of an injustice to the Work as a whole. I felt that knowing the language as it stands would be more beneficial than to just know it in Jungian or psychological terms. This book seemed as good of a start as any other. The book explains that there are 22 paintings which refer to the 22 cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. There are also 7 Treatises in total, which refers to the planets. The author, Salomon Trismosin, also writes of the process and to make the Philosopher's Stone. Other authors have disputed this work as a true or whether Trismosin has been divinely inspired and discovered the Stone. It is not my place to comment here as my own research is not done, but I will say it is neccessary reading among the collection classic Alchemical texts. The edition that I read is a tall red hardcover edition from Yoga Publications Society, 1992, which is a facsimile reprint of the 1921 Kegan Paul, Trench and Trubner edition. The major drawback of this edition is that the paintings are in black and white, which basically negates the writings as they describe the pictures and their colors. If you are looking to read this, I would reccomend you find a copy that has color plates. The Joseph Henderson version Transformation of the Psyche: The Symbolic Alchemy of the Spendour Solis is from a Jungian point of view and essentially sets out to interpret the book. While its reccomended as an aside, I would still look for a copy with text only.
Book Description
Writing for the general reader or student, Wald has completely revised and updated this highly regarded work to include recent developments in black hole physics and cosmology. Nature called the first edition "a very readable and accurate account of modern relativity physics for the layman within the unavoidable constraint of almost no mathematics. . . . A well written, entertaining and authoritative book."
Customer Reviews:
Cosmology .......2006-04-28
This book is similar to Hawking's A brief History of Time, yet it includes some of the equations and a little bit of math, it's a great reading for people trying to get a feeling on how the universe began. Yet again I feel that some very deep philosophical and religious approaches will enrich the view even more, like The Sefer Yetzirah of Aryeh Kaplan or The Structure of Creation by Weiss.
Good book, but not for everybody.......2000-04-10
Robert M. Wald is more known by his (very technical) book "General Relativity", where he explains Einstein's theory using a somewhat (sometimes too much) hard mathematical description. The main problem with this book, "Space, Time and Gravity" seems to be, for me, also its hardness; it is a clear and well written book, but maybe with language and focus some steps too high for the general public. Let give me an example: the book has ten chapters; the three first ones give a beautiful logical description of how space and time are viewed in Physics, but the next chapter becomes a bit too complicated, having a simple description of the Singularity Theorem, which for me seems a technical matter not very appealing. The final five chapters give an interesting account of the theory of black holes, but again this account seems to lack some taste, reminding me of a breakfast made of a superb toast served without jam or butter or anything to drink... However, I would recommend this book for undergraduate students of physics. For readers with a not-so-good mathematical background I would also suggest "Flat and Curved Space-Times" by G.F.R. Ellis and R.M. Williams (unhappily out of stock). The general public probably would enjoy more the reading of Einstein's "Relativity : The Special and the General Theory" (Paperback - May 1995) (a very recommendable book!) or the lengthy "Black Holes and Time Warps : Einstein's Outrageous Legacy", by Kip S. Thorne, et al. (Paperback - January 1995).
Book Description
Clara Reeve's early gothic novel, The Old English Baron (1778), is paired with Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto (1764), the work that inspired it. Hers is the story of Edmund, the peasant-hero, who discovers his rightful heritage through mysterious portents, and whose loyalty and integrity are put to the test in bringing the villain to justice. With an emphasis on probability and domestic virtue, The Old English Baron plays an important role in the transformation of the gothic genre. While the Castle of Otranto initiates a tradition of horror, with violent deaths, tyrannical power and tragic doom. The Old English Baron redirects the gothic towards homosocial bonding, paternal goodness and, ultimately, sentimental domesticity. The College publishing edition includes a substantial introductory essay on historical and literary contexts, with additional "links" or short essays situated throughout the text, exploring subjects such as chivalry, younger sons, women and law, anti-Catholicism, gothic architecture, and the supernatural. The appendix includes eighteenth-and nineteenth century reviews of both novels.
Customer Reviews:
Otranto: A Criticism.......2005-09-19
Horace Walpole's The Castle of Otranto offers a delightfully gothic story of a man's lust for power. Manfred, the prince of Otranto, spends the course of the novella attempting to continue his bloodline. His son Conrad is a sickly adolescent who is mortally injured by the supernatural in the first pages of the story; the incident prohibits him from marrying the lovely princess Isabella. Manfred resolves to divorce his barren wife Hippolita and marry Isabella to produce the heir he needs. Theodore, a young peasant recently accused (unreasonably) of Conrad's death, aids Isabella in her escape from the castle. As Isabella escapes, Theodore is rediscovered by the king and promptly imprisoned. The stage is set for a wide array of strange occurrences.
The rest of the story yields many discoveries, such as Theodore's birthright, Manfred's motives for choosing Isabella, the identity of the silent knight, and the true meaning of the prophesy, "That the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it." (176)
The story does a marvelous job of keeping the keen reader astonished and engaged. Though the language complicates the dialogue at times, the back and forth provides for a fast-paced and enjoyable tale of self-destruction. While many of Walpole's uses of the supernatural are antiquated, the story's effect is not lost. Anything it loses in suspense it compensates for with its plot, providing a complex yet plausible web of relationships. Piety, greed, integrity, vengeance, cruelty, and the other themes of the novella keep the reader thinking throughout the text, while not being overwhelming. A short and pleasant read, The Castle of Otranto offers an insight into human nature, as well as into gothic literature.
A Challenging Thought-Provoking Read.......2005-09-17
The Castle of Otranto was an unbelievable, but, nonetheless, interesting novel. Throughout the story, ghosts emerge, mythical curses become reality, and other "weird" things happen. However, the weirdness of the story makes the plot more interesting for the reader. The story's outlandish events that also starkly contrast the scholarship of the writing.
The plot, although fairly developed, was at times startling and unexpected. Many times in the novel, various events occurred that the reader never thought would take place. As the story unravels, the plot becomes the major source for much of the character development. Therefore, the reader begins to understand the characters mainly through their interactions with one another.
In my opinion, the character who was almost fully developed was Manfred. Through observing his interactions with other people, the reader sees Manfred as being manipulative and ruthless when it comes to getting his way. Manfred will destroy virtually anyone who defies his will. He becomes even more tyrannical as the story progresses, and Manfred doesn't admit to his own faults until the very end, when much is already in devastation.
Most of the women in the book are passive and submissive. Look at Hippolitha! Too many times, Hippolitha tolerates the insolence and negligence of her "beloved" husband. Likewise, Matilda is very obedient towards her father. For most of the novel, Matilda is reluctant to defy her father's will. Although there were instances in which Matilda displayed hints of rebellion, these moments were fleeting.
Overall, I would say that this book was a good novel. Once you get used to the Old English language, the sophistication of the plot and the Gothic eeriness of the setting will make The Castle of Otranto an intellectually stimulating read.
Reading Rainbow's #1 pick.......2005-09-15
This book is the essence, and one of the first pieces of Gothic literature. It set the standards of cursed families, haunted castles, and other supernatural events in the genre.
A cursed and selfish king tries to continue his lineage against all odds. In each terrible plan of his, he only digs himself deeper in trouble with the supernatural.
This book is not a quick thriller because the plot is very complex and the language sometimes difficult to understand. The reader may have to reread again and again just to understand what is progressing in the story.
Most characters are characterized very well, both directly and indirectly, and seem to fit a certain stereotype. There is a hero, a tyrant, an obedient wife, and a couple women to be won. This furthers shows why this book set the standard for the Gothic genre. I would definitely recommend this book but it should not be taken lightly.

Book Description
'Though I have been dead these fifteen years, I still command here, and none can enter these gates without my permission.' When Sir Philip Harclay returns to England after a long absence, he finds that his childhood friend, Arthur,Lord Lovel, is no longer alive, and that the castle and estates of the Lovel family have twice changed hands. But a mysteriously abandoned set of rooms in the castle of Lovel promises to disclose the secrets of the past. After a series of frantic episodes and surprising revelations, culminating in a trial by combat, the crimes of the usurper and the legitimacy of the true heir are finally discovered. 'The literary offspring of the castle of Otranto', as Reeve described it, The Old English Baron provides an ambitious rewriting of Horace Walpole's groundbreaking work, transporting the trappings of the Gothic to medieval England. Innovative and original in its day, Reeve's historical romance is increasingly recognized as a major influence on the development of Gothic fiction.
