5 out of 5 stars Bloated and inefficient.......2003-12-14

This book reveals that public education is a continuing scam masquerading as a cost effective benefit for the children of the body politic. It's yet another testament to the syndrome of hypocrisy and self serving behavior that typifies the leadership of the public education establishment. Be certain that it's not an indictment of the thousands of well-meaning teachers and workers, those whose dues are being pilfered for political purposes by corrupt cadres at the top; no. It is however another dagger thrust into the heart of the problem, the ceaseless dishonesty of entrenched elites.

These people have for too long formed an iron triangle with a vastly corrupted Democratic party establishment with its concommitant dependence on illegal teachers unions campaign contributions, and the lobbyists who serve their cause. As the numbers in this book (highlighted by forensic accounting) frame the case, the game is over, just not the battles. Like any corrupted elite these educational establishment grinches will continue to fight a rear guard action whose sole purpose will be to stretch out their reign of priviledge and neglect.

Because of the rise in the proliferation of information, made possible by the increases in power of the microchip (and the attendant reductions in costs) we can herald the day when students will once again be served by those who truly have their best interests in mind. But, power to the people never occurs without a fight and the courage of the few who rise up to fight that power.

A great book which should be read by every legislator and citizen. I know, wishful thinking, but isn't it refreshing to dream of the possible?

    Book Description

The photographs produced by the FSA during the Great Depression constitute one of America's greatest artistic legacies. The project launched a stellar group of young photographers, including Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Ben Shahn, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, Marion Post Walcott, and Gordon Parks, who fanned out across America and created images of intense power and poetry. Thousands of FSA photographs have been exhibited and published, and we may feel that we know them well. For this remarkable volume, however, Gilles Mora and Beverly Brannan immersed themselves in the vast archive at the Library of Congress and emerged with unknown treasures. Theirs is a new view of the achievement of the FSA photographers—the most comprehensive in print—that finally gives them their due as the creators of a new American photographic vision.

Sure their vision was a bit romantic, but anyone who appreciates what the FSA photographers, under Roy Stryker's direction, did will also appreciate this book. Never before and never since then (pace, Robert Frank) has the country sat for its portrait. It would have been nice to have the numbers in the Smithsonian's Prints and Photographs Department, where the pictures are kept. The nation may have sat for its portrait, but the pictures belong to you.

This book have done a great job by putting this all together by project/Date base and indicating where they went. It has answered alot of my questions on the FSA photographers.
I am pleased the book used mostly unknown photographs.
I have already raving about this book

5 out of 5 stars Looking at masters in photography.......2007-01-09

The FSA book is a wonderful look at an ear gone by. And the works of Dorothea Lang, Ben Shahn, Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein, Theodor Jung and Carl Mydans in the early years is well worth the price of the book. But to continue going forward is remarkable. But the things that make this a wonderful collection of photographs is that it is not just the most famous works by the photographers of the FSA but the ones that have not been published in some 70 plus years or not at all. Projects like this come once in a life time. For any photographer who enjoys photo essays this book is a must and if you are interested in history of America this is a book that will leave and impression on you. If you want to see great photographs this book is for you, if you want to see them by great photographers than this book id definitely for you.

    5 out of 5 stars Stryker's vision revealed.......2006-10-15

A worthy addition to a very small number of books that present a general selection of Farm Security Administration photos in an art book format. To my mind there are only three others, In this proud land: America, 1935-1943, as seen in the FSA photographs, A Vision Shared: A Classic Portrait of America and Its People, 1935-1943, (the only sumptuous large book production of the three) and Long Time Coming: A Photographic Portrait of America, 1935-1943. 'FSA' easily joins this list with 470 beautifully printed photos on quality paper with an impressive 250+ dpi screen and a unique and interesting editorial format.

Each of the sixteen FSA/OWI photographers gets a chapter that is divided into two parts. Firstly there is a selection of photos covering a single subject, usually between thirteen and twenty-five photos, though John Collier gets an impressive thirty-four of his work in the Pennsylvania coal industry, followed by a general selection of that photographer's work of between four and twelve images. I thought the single theme idea worked well, you can see how Walker Evens seemed to search out monuments and his love of typographic signs or Jack Delano and Russell Lee's interest in people doing ordinary jobs. Esther Bubley has a fascinating twenty-four shots taken on Greyhound bus trips in 1943. Each photographer's gallery selection is a mix of their well-known work and others, some published here for the first time.

The two authors contribute interesting essays, Brannan explains the overall idea of Stryker's vision and Mora writes about the creative aspects of the photographs. The back of the book has a useful chronology and bibliography for each photographer.

'FSA' is a beautiful book of content rich photos but I was rather disappointed with the over generous amount of white space on many pages. So many of these photos are landscape and would suit that book format which is why I think Michael Lesy's 'Long Time Coming' was so successful. It has slightly less photos than 'FSA' but they are bigger and presented in the more appropriate format. The captions also, in 'FSA', are printed on a separate page following each photo selection when they clearly should be on each relevant photo page (when will book designers get this right!). Despite these reservations and as I said earlier, 'FSA' is a wonderful addition to the published photo archive of America's Depression and early war years.

    Book Description

Between 1935 and 1946 a group of photographers working for the federal government fanned out across the country to record American life in pictures. Among them were some of the great documentary photographers in American history--including Marjory Collins, Jack Delano, Sheldon Dick, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Ben Shahn, and Marion Post Wolcott. This massive photographic project, carried out primarily under the auspices of the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and the Office of War Information (OWI) and later preserved at the Library of Congress, was unrivaled in scope: no comparable attempt to document life in this country has ever been made. Times of Sorrow and Hope is devoted to the Pennsylvania photographs in the FSA-OWI collection. It is both a book and an on-line catalog.

The Times of Sorrow and Hope book features 150 selected images from the approximately 6,000 Pennsylvania photographs, and they cover themes ranging from coal mining, steelworkers, and women in wartime industries to cities and small towns, farm life, family life, and life among the Amish and Mennonites. The book also includes an essay introducing the FSA-OWI project, an introduction to the catalog of the entire collection of Pennsylvania photographs, and a historical essay on Pennsylvania during the Great Depression and World War II.

The Website that accompanies this volume offers a complete catalog of all the FSA-OWI photos taken in the state as well as detailed descriptions and guides to the images. The catalog is keyed to the holdings of the Library of Congress, which houses the fullest collection of FSA-OWI photographs.

Times of Sorrow and Hope provides a unique, comprehensive visual and written record of Pennsylvania history as the state struggled through one of its darkest periods and confronted new economic, political, and social challenges.

5 out of 5 stars Keystone State photos........2004-09-07

This is the sixteenth book of FSA photos devoted to a State that I've bought and I must say it is probably the best one from any criteria, photo selection, editorial content, design and printing. Though it only has 150 photos, a close second to this title would be 'Picturing Texas' (ISBN 0876111401) which has more than 200, it makes up for less visually by having such a comprehensive editorial content.

The photos are divided into twelve sections and this being Pennsylvania there are sections covering coal and steel production. Each page has a photo with a short caption centered below and if I have a criticism it would be that the images could have been just a bit bigger. It is the pages after the photos that make this book so interesting to me. There is an introduction to the Times of Sorrow & Hope on-line catalog (this includes the six thousand taken in Pennsylvania) followed by two indices, one of photographers and one of places. Next, Appendix A has excellent expanded captions and technical information about the 150 photos, Appendix B is a biography of the main photographers and lastly a Resources and Selected Bibliography. The bibliography is particularly impressive because it is so comprehensive and nicely includes books about individual photographers. I've not really commented on the actual photos, they are all extraordinary visual documents, as one would expect.

The book overall I found very impressive, the editorial and production could be a useful template for any State Historical Societies that want to publish images from the FSA files about their State, this is what your publication should aspire to.

        Book Description

James Guimond's powerful study reveals how documentary photographers have expressed or contested the idea of the American Dream throughout the twentieth century. In Guimond's formulation issues like growth, equality, and national identity came under the rubric of the Dream as it has been used to measure how well the nation is living up to its social and political ideals.

A pathbreaking book, American Photography and the American Dream examines the most important photographers and developments in the documentary genre during this century. It encompasses the reform-era images of Francis Benjamin Johnston and Lewis Hine; the work of Farm Security Administration (FSA) photographers like Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange during both the 1930s and 1940s after the FSA photography unit broke up; the American-Way-of-Life pictures published by Life, Look, and the United States Information Agency during the 1940s and 1950s; the iconoclastic images of William Klein, Diane Arbus, and Robert Frank; and the work of four photographers of the 1970s and 1980s: Bill Owens, Chauncey Hare, Susan Meiselas, and Michael Williamson.

Guimond pays close attention to the specific historical circumstances in which the pictures were made, to the roles the photographers played in making their images, to their intentions, stated and unstated, and to the original contexts in which the images were published or exhibited. These images, he shows, are not merely pictures on museum walls but revelations that can help us understand how we as Americans have seen ourselves, one another, and the world around us.

I'll Take You There, is an oral and photographic history of one of America's premier blues clubs located in Northwest, Ohio, and quite popular in the 1950s,1960s, and early 1970s. It was more than just a blues club and featured African American motorcycle racing, horse racing and exhibition baseball games. The author conducted a series of interviews with local and national blues musicians, and other African Americans who participated in events at Hines Farm. Also included are 63 black and white photographs from the 1950s and 1960s, of performers, patrons, African American motorcycle clubs at Hines Farm and posters for events at Hines Farm for such blues and jazz greats as John Lee Hooker, Count Basie, Little Esther Phillips, Jimmy reed and many others.

5 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Photographic History.......2000-03-30

This work tells the story of the American farmer with vivid black and white photography by such notables as Emma Coleman, Solomon Butcher, Lewis Hine, Dorothea Lange, Andrew Dahl, Margaret Morley, George Francois Mugnier, William Wilson, Kosti Ruohomaa, Bruce Davidson, and many more (over eighty photographers represented). Beginning with the yeoman, the chronological arrangement documents the antebellum plantation, the surge westward (the farmers' frontier), the triumph of the cash system (shift to commercial agriculture), the depression (a bare hard living), nostalgia about the land and farming (roots in the earth), immigrant workers (someone else's land), and the modern agricultural demise (survival of the fit). The text preceding each section is succinct and offers contextual historical interpretations with ample reference to primary sources. Quotes interspersed among the photos are both apropos and illuminating. In my opinion, this is an outstanding work that well confirms the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words." I found the beginning sections especially helpful. Most of these photos were taken in the latter part of the nineteenth century, but capture quite easily agricultural conditions which have prevailed from earlier decades. Too bad the work is no longer in print.

                  Book Description

Liposomes have become an important model in fundamental biomembrane research, including biophysical, biochemical, and cell biological studies of membranes and cell function. They are thoroughly studied in applications, such as drug delivery systems in medical applications and as controlled release systems, microencapsulating media, signal carriers, support matrices, and solubilizers in other applications. While medical applications have been extensively reviewed in recent literature, there is a need for easily accessible information on applications for liposomes beyond pharmacology and medicine.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful book for the layman.......2006-04-25

This is a fastinating history of several of science's most important discoveries. It is written for the layman, and will be completely enjoyed by any science buff. I would make this book and Simon Singh's "Bing Bang" two required reading items for every high school and college student in America. Both books contain a history of science that everyone should know.

                    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Concept.......2004-11-11

Robert Adler's book is truly an engaging read. Once I started reading it was a true journey through time and I could hardly wait to find out what "Science First" had occurred next. Robert Adler highlights the sudden brilliance of a select number of scientists, which actually seems to be a result of serious study and contemplation.

You can literally see how ideas evolved through time and how each scientist discovered inner genius despite immense discouragement and conflict, not to mention religious persecution and their own human foibles. You can see how humans started to observe the exterior surroundings and then started to delve into the areas of cell structure and the invisible atom.

This book presents scientists in all their human glory and the honesty gives each scientist a true personality. Many struggled to overcome physical and psychological adversities or were led to their death by their own natural curiosity. It was not uncommon for these individuals to be a living part of their own experiments. However, not even plagues could hinder scientific research and the work went on through time despite a seemingly eternal and chaotic war of life itself that seemed determined to thwart their efforts.

Thales, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Aristotle, Aristarchus, Archimedes, Ibn al-Haitham, Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Van Leeuwenhoek, Newton, Joseph Priestley, Humphry Davy, Darwin, Gregor Mendel, Dmitri Mendeleev, Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Max Planck, Ernest Rutherford, Albert Einstein, Alfred Wegener, Edwin Hubble, Raymond Dart, Barbara McClintock, Claude Shannon, James Watson, Francis Crick, Rosalind Franklin, Karl Jansky, Lynn Margulis, Michel Mayor, Didier Queloz, Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell all make their appearances.

Robert Adler shows how Charles Babbage (1792-1871) and Ada Byron Lovelace were at the cutting edge of technology and how Babbage designed a machine that functioned like a modern computer. If you become especially interested in any of the scientists or chapters, there is a reference section for further reading. The index is perfect for your own research or for locating a subject of interest. I thought each chapter was perfect in content and it definitely made me more interested in reading about additional scientific discoveries.

Quotes are found throughout the chapters and I was especially impressed by the letter Einstein wrote to Marie Curie who had to overcome great personal trials to achieve her goals. I liked how Robert Adler refutes the myth of Einstein being a slow learner and he makes his points most eloquently. Pictures throughout the text gives this book an additional dose of personality and the biographical information is especially interesting.

Robert Adler presents a scientific journey through time that is filled with insight and a depth of clarity that is stunning. This is one of the most highly crafted books I've ever read. Not only does Robert Adler delve into complex ideas about physics, biology and astronomy, he makes the ideas accessible to readers who may faintly remember these subjects from high school, college or the news. I can't wait to read his book about medical discoveries.

Science Firsts is truly a book about how scientific discovery changed the world. It is a fascinating read and I can highly recommend it to students of science, teachers and the casual reader who has an interest in progress itself. After reading this book, I think I might be ready to read about "the theory of everything."

4 out of 5 stars Science Firsts piques the curiosity.......2004-04-05

Science Firsts is an excellent introduction to 35 major scientific discoveries and the people who made them. In addition to the expected names--Galileo, Darwin, Einstein--Adler discusses a number of lesser-known researchers who made valuable contributions (e.g., Claude Shannon and digital computers). Each chapter covers one person and one discovery in just a few pages. Adler's writing is straightforward and easily accessible to those with little science knowledge.

Unlike many other books on scientific discoveries, Science Firsts also offers a glimpse into the lives of the scientists. The best chapters are the ones on recent researchers whom it appears Adler was able to interview. But, even when writing about Kepler or Planck, Adler includes details that show the scientist to be first and foremost a human being. Science Firsts also provides historical and political context for the discoveries, for science is inevitably intertwined with government and culture.

My main frustration with the book was its brevity. I was left at the end of many chapters wanting to know more. I enthusiastically recommend Science Firsts as an overview of the history of science, but don't be surprised if you find yourself looking for full-length works on some of these researchers.

                    5 out of 5 stars What a great idea!.......2003-08-28

I wish I had known about this book last Christmas. I would have sent a copy to every nephew and niece I have, in an attempt to interest them more in science. This book is a great idea, tying the pivotal ideas of science to stories of individual discoverers. Very palatable for the young reader. I'm hoping it will be out in paperback soon, so I can send a bundle out this Christmas. A nice job by Mr. Adler.

4 out of 5 stars A tour of ideas and science heroes.......2003-02-27

More than twenty-six centuries ago, the Greek thinker Thales asked a simple but provocative question: "what is the world made of?" His unwillingness to accept explanations based on gods and myths, and his insistence on answers based on testable facts, argues author Robert Adler, launched the discipline now call science. In Science Firsts, Adler tells the story of how Thales and 34 other scientific pioneers whose unconventional thinking has fundamentally advanced humanity's perception of how the world works. In a series of mini-biographies, Adler limns out the often turbulent life and times of people such as Galileo and Marie Curie, and demonstrates how their backgrounds and circumstances may have factored into their discoveries. And although luminaries such as Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein are included, the book offers much more than the standard tour of the superstars of science. Less well-known but equally important thinkers such as Anaximander, the world's first cosmologist, and Barbara McClintock, who insists that the primary force behind evolution is the blending of DNA, also get their due. The chapters show how each scientist took the knowledge of those who came before, and built new tools to peer ever further into the darkness. The result is an illuminating and easily digestible view of the continuum of ideas that is the history of science.
