Regions and the World Economy: The Coming Shape of Global Production, Competition, and Political Order
Allen J. Scott Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0198296584 |
Book Description
One of the dramatic shifts that is occurring in the world system as we enter the twenty-first century is the increasing openness and interpenetration of national economies and sovereign states. This shift is associated on the one hand with the beginnings of a progressive transfer of certain economic and political functions upward to the plurinational and global levels; and on the other hand with a countervailing trend to the reinforcement of economic and political life at the subnational, regional level. This book is a wide-ranging exploration of the economic logic and political meaning of these developments, with special reference to a reconceptualization of the economic geography of the modern world as an emerging global mosaic of regional systems of production and exchange. The steady globalization of economic activity over the last few decades has intensified the re-assertion of the region as a critical locus of economic order and as a potent foundation of competitive advantage. As a corollary, many regions in the modern world are also beginning to acquire an intense self-consciousness of themselves as socio-political and economic entities, and all the more so as they increasingly find themselves bound together in both competitive and collaborative relationships across national borders. The significance of these tendencies for new kinds of political mobilization is explored, and their potential impacts of substantive forms of democracy and citizenship in the new world order are assessed.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
This book consolidates several different perspectives on antitrust law. First, Keith Hylton presents a detailed description of the law as it has developed through numerous judicial opinions. Second, he presents detailed economic critiques of the judicial opinions, drawing heavily from law and economics journals. Third, he integrates a jurisprudential perspective that views antitrust as a vibrant field of common law. This last perspective leads him to address issues of certainty, stability, and predictability in antitrust law, and to examine the pressures shaping its evolution.Download Description

Evolution and the Common Law
Allan C. Hutchinson Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0521614910 |
Book Description
This book offers a radical challenge to all existing accounts of the common law's development. Contrary to received jurisprudential wisdom, it maintains there is no grand theory which will explain satisfactorily the dynamic interactions of change and stability in the common law's history. Offering fresh and original readings of Charles Darwin's and Hans-Georg Gadamer's works, the book demonstrates that law is a rhetorical activity that can only be properly appreciated in its historical and political context. It reveals that, like life, law is an organic process and that common law is a perpetual work-in-progress.Download Description
This book offers a radical challenge to all existing accounts of the common law's development. Contrary to received jurisprudential wisdom, it maintains there is no grand theory which will explain satisfactorily the dynamic interactions of change and stability in the common law's history. Offering fresh and original readings of Charles Darwin's and Hans-Georg Gadamer's works, the book shows that law is a rhetorical activity that can only be properly appreciated in its historical and political context; tradition and transformation are locked in a mutually reinforcing but thoroughly contingent embrace. In contrast to the dewy-eyed offerings of much contemporary work, it demonstrates that, like life, law is an organic process (i.e., events are the products of functional and localized causes) rather than a miraculous one (i.e., events are the result of some grand plan or intervention). In short, common law is a perpetual work-in-progress - evanescent, dynamic, messy, productive, tantalising, and bottom-up.

The Evolution of Efficient Common Law (Economic Approaches to Law Series)
Manufacturer: Edward Elgar Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1845424425 |
Book Description
This volume contains a selection of the most important articles on the issue of the evolution of the common law. The notion that evolutionary forces would lead to common law efficiency has been very influential in the study of the economics of law. Even those scholars who do not believe that the law is efficient will find it useful to consider the evolutionary forces identified in this volume. In an even-handed approach, Professor Rubin has selected not only articles which advance the hypothesis of efficient evolution, but also those which claim that the evolutionary process is not efficient. Further articles show that the process is indeed sometimes efficient and sometimes not, and identify those conditions which bring about more of less efficiency in the evolution of law. This authoritative collection will be useful to anyone who is concerned with the sources of efficiency and inefficiency in the law, as well as to scholars pursuing research in this area.

Promise, Trust and Evolution: Managing the Commons of South Asia
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0199213836 |
Book Description
From land management to water rights, this volume looks at the current status of Common Property Resources, or CPRs, in South Asia. Developed countries, have managed to establish well-defined property rights over numerous resources and in some instances extended non-exclusionary rights over privately owned resources over an extended period of time. In the developing world, however, the share of community property is extensive, either as a response to an expanding market or because the exposure to markets in still in its nascent stage. This coupled with the demands of globalization, has led to the co-existence of both community ownership of resources as well as an evolving private property rights market. This tension between public versus private ownership rights is particularly relevant in the developing countries of South Asia, not only because of its shared history but also because of its resources frequently cross national boundaries. This book tells the story of CPRs and the commons in a rapidly changing South Asia. Including contributions from those working with natural resources in Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, the papers discuss issues such as equity in distribution; efficiency and productivity of resources; sustainability of resources; and institutional transition and governance.

The Force of Symmetry
Vincent Icke Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521404959 |
Book Description
The Force of Symmetry gives an elementary introduction to the spectacular interplay among the three great themes of contemporary physics: quantum behavior, relativity, and symmetry. In clear, nontechnical language, it explores many fascinating aspects of modern physics, discussing the nature and interaction of force and matter. All these themes are drawn together toward the end of the book to describe the most successful physics theory in history, the "standard model" of subatomic particles. The book is suitable for undergraduate students in physics and mathematics.Customer Reviews:

A fine introduction.......2002-11-23
Actually, Mr. Icke studied under Tini Veltman, who won the Nobel Prize for Physics recently (together with Gerard 't Hooft) and is now professor of astrophysics (Leiden university) and cosmology (Amsterdam university).
I think "the Force of Symmetry" is an excellent primer on the subject of quantum behavior, relativity and symmetry. Besides (in my humble opinion) understanding, it's written with dry humour and love for the subject, and that's highly catching.
It urged me to want to know more on the subject(s), which is exactly what I'm going to do. So beware - it might catch on you too ;-)

Air Vehicle Optimal Trajectories for Minimization of Radar Exposure
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423530640 |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A451093. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study addresses the problem of analyzing the single vehicle path planning problem for radar exposure minimization. The calculus of Variations and optimal control are applied to formulate the cost function and numerical algorithms are used to solve for the optimal paths. Cost sensitivity to path length is analyzed for flight against one radar; a second radar is then included in the formulation and the optimal path for flight between the radars is found for cases of equal and unequal radar power. The costs of the optimal path, direct path, and Voronoi diagram-generated paths are compared. Results indicate low sensitivity of the cost to suboptimal paths for flight versus one radar; against two radars, approaching the Voronoi curves optimally from the endpoints ma be feasible for on-line use.

This thesis will consider two separate training paths for officers to complete in order to become JSO eligible. The mos preferred educates officers prior to assignment to a joint billet. The second path allows officers to complete their joint assignment prior to entering joint education. Recent historical transition, continuation and promotion rates by years of service and pay grade are used to forecast future officer output. These various rates and variables are applied within a PC-based spreadsheet to provide a user friendly joint officer management tool.

Testing a Fortran 90 Compiler Using the NSWC Fortran 77 Mathematics Library
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423554094 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL SURFACE WARFARE CENTER DAHLGREN DIV VA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A406063. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report describes tne analysis and associated Fortran program (TEST9O) that were developed to aid in establishing the validity of a new Fortran 90 mainframe compiler. The FORTRAN 77 Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC) Mathematics Library (MLIB) is used as a source of routines for checking the Fortran 90 compiler. At the same time, this study can be considered as an aid to determine whether MLIB can operate in a Fortran 90 environment The inputs for the routines were chosen so that many of the different possible paths of the routines were executed. Seventy-four directly cable routines, with 293 supporting routines, were chosen for testing. All but 17, and their supporting routines, were taken from MLIB. The ones not belonging to MLIB are double- precision versions of routines in MLIB. Thirteen hundred and twenty five numerical cases were submitted for testing. A true value for each test was obtained independently and given correctly to 35 digits by using MAPLE software. If the difference in the test output and the corresponding true value exceeds a prespecified error tolerance, an error message is printed identifying the routine and the input. Additional test cases were also prepared to check the bit and string instructions, since these do not appear in MUB. TEST90 has been used to test the latest Fortran 90 compilers of the CRAY EL98 and IBM PC machines. No errors were found; however, TEST90 did reveal a complex arithmetic error in an earlier version of the Cray EL98 compiler. MLIB routines ran under TEST90 without any problems on both machines.

Wholeness Restored: Love Of Symmetry As A Shaping Force In The Writings Of Henry James, Kurt Vonnegut, Samuel Butler And Raymond Chandler
Ralf Norrman Manufacturer: Peter Lang Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 3631337299 |
Book Description
This book presents a new and exciting theory of love of symmetry as a shaping force in thought, language and literature. The desire to complement any given order with its own inversion, so as to create symmetry and thereby "restore wholeness", is panhuman. Its manifestations can be found during all periods, in all places, and in all societies and individuals, although in varying forms and varying intensity. In the works of Butler, James and Vonnegut the desire is exceptionally strong. Through studying love of symmetry at work as a shaping force in the fiction of these authors we become aware of the extent to which love of symmetry influences human existence generally, and in ways we have not been aware of before.

The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City: Latin America in the Cold War (Convergences: Inventories of the Present)
Jean Franco Manufacturer: Harvard University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0674008421 |
Book Description
The cultural Cold War in Latin America was waged as a war of values--artistic freedom versus communitarianism, Western values versus national cultures, the autonomy of art versus a commitment to liberation struggles--and at a time when the prestige of literature had never been higher. The projects of the historic avant-garde were revitalized by an anti-capitalist ethos and envisaged as the opposite of the republican state. The Decline and Fall of the Lettered City charts the conflicting universals of this period, the clash between avant-garde and political vanguard. This was also a twilight of literature at the threshold of the great cultural revolution of the seventies and eighties, a revolution to which the Cold War indirectly contributed. In the eighties, civil war and military rule, together with the rapid development of mass culture and communication empires, changed the political and cultural map.A long-awaited work by an eminent Latin Americanist widely read throughout the world, this book will prove indispensable to anyone hoping to understand Latin American literature and society. Jean Franco guides the reader across minefields of cultural debate and histories of highly polarized struggle. Focusing on literary texts by García Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Roa Bastos, and Juan Carlos Onetti, conducting us through this contested history with the authority of an eyewitness, Franco gives us an engaging overview as involving as it is moving.
