Book Description
Most Irish historians agree that the southern Irish economy performed very badly between the 1920 and the early 1960s; indeed output and incomes had grown so little in those decades that the economic benefits of political independence were far from obvious. There is less consensus about economic performance since then, though the ability of the South to sustain a significant population increase for the first time since the Great Famine may reflect relative success. This volume critically re-examines the claims and counter-claims using new data and adopting a comparative perspective, pro-viding a comprehensive narrative for an Irish as well as a wider audience. Assuming only a basic understanding of economic and statistical theory, the volume has been written mainly with an undergraduate audience in mind. However, in its use of new archival evidence in the analysis of policy-making it will also appeal to political scientists and historians.

A introduction to the developing Celtic Tiger.......1999-10-02
O'Grada has here a fine work, a perfect introduction to the "rocky road" that was Irish politico/economic history - but for those in seach of more concrete economic analyisis will not be satisfied here. However, this is not to say that the read is not worth the time or effort, for indeed it is as O'Grada holds a firm normative approach to his analyisis - good for the student, teacher and inquisitive reader.
Book Description
Some of the world's greatest treasures are hidden away and have not been seen publicly for decades, sometimes for centuries. Others have been destroyed. They are not stolen property. They are simply private property, and no matter their public significance, the public has no claims on them. A capricious owner of Leonardo da Vinci's notebook would be perfectly within his rights to throw it in the fireplace, as James Joyce's grandson did with letters from the author's daughter, or Warren Harding's widow did with her husband's Teapot Dome papers. This is a book about such rights and why they are wrong.
Some incidents are famous. A great artist's mural is demolished because the rich man who commissioned it is offended by its political implications. One of America's most famous collections is closed to virtually every notable person in the art world, whose requests for visits produce only a postcard from the owner saying "go to Blazes." Scholars who seek access to the Dead Sea Scrolls, monopolized and secreted by a handful of individuals for nearly forty years, are dismissed as "slime," "fleas," "gang-snatchers," and "manure," and told, "You will not see these things in your lifetime."
Playing Darts with a Rembrandt explores abuses of ownership of cultural treasures in a wide range of settings, including material of historic and scientific interest, as well as art and antiquities. It examines the claims made on behalf of the public for preservation, protection, and access to important artifacts, balancing those claims against proprietary and privacy interests, and discusses the proper role of institutions such as museums and libraries that act as repositories. Acknowledging the complexities that sometimes arise (such as the claims of history against the desire of a great figure's family to withhold private letters), Playing Darts with a Rembrandt proposes a new species of qualified ownership: to own an object of great public importance is to become a "fortunate, if provisional, trustee, having no right to deprive others who value the objects as much as they do themselves."
The fascinating stories that comprise the bulk of the book, ranging from dinosaur excavations and the Dead Sea Scrolls to the fate of presidential papers and the secrets held by the Library of Congress, will be of interest to a wide range of general readers. The extensive discussion of collectors, and their role, should commend the book to those in the art world, as well as to those professionally associated with museums, libraries, and archives. While written in a readable and untechnical way, it should also be of interest to those in the legal community who are interested in the philosophical and theoretical underpinnings of our property system.
"Sax turns his attention from public rights to conserve land and water to protection of cultural treasures. As always, he sees both sides of the argument and comes to reasoned and wise conclusions, balancing private and public interests. His prose is lucid, and his examples are both instructive and entertaining. An invaluable book for anyone interested in the preservation of our cultural resources." --I. Michael Heyman, Secretary, Smithsonian Institution
Joseph L. Sax is Professor of Law, University of California, Berkeley. He was formerly the counselor to the Secretary of the Interior and Professor of Law, the University of Michigan Law School.

Book Description
India's "Anand pattern" dairy co-operatives are widely used as a developmental model for dairy farming in Asia, Africa, and Latin America. However, they have been criticized for their limited benefits to the poorest members of society, their effects on rural women's work, and their use of
capital-intensive imported technology. This book assesses the Kheda dairy co-operative in Gujarat that was the inspiration for the Anand pattern, and uses case studies from the Indian state of Kerala to question the current drive to replicate the Anand pattern. Shanti George also presents a
discussion of the successful Choryasi dairy co-operative that, unlike Kheda, uses intermediate technology, but has not been replicated or adopted as a model. He then shifts his focus to Africa, where the Dairy Development Programme has tried to learn from the Anand pattern and from its critics.
George's study stresses the human factor in development planning, and argues that this must be considered when trying to devise optimally productive co-operatives.

Book Description
Most researchers would be amazed to discover that opinions they have about cherished themes in biology and medicine are biased. Van der Steen and Ho contend that logic and methodology are not well applied in biology and medicine, arguing that the impact of social and moral factors on claims within these two disciplines is underestimated. In response to this situation, Van der Steen and Ho present tools from logic and ethics for assessing existing literature. These tools will help to create sound articles and materials in the life sciences. After reviewing logic and methodological approaches, broad guidelines are used to place science in a social context. Examples from life sciences illustrate the implementation of logic, methodology, and guidelines in forty-five brief case studies. Each study includes comments on quoted and paraphrased passages from a single article or book. Cross-references facilitate the assimilation of lessons from the text. Students, researchers, and scholars in biology, biomedicine, philosophy, and ethics as applied to the life sciences will find this guide useful in improving their research and writing skills.

This complete introduction to plasma physics and controlled fusion by one of the pioneering scientists in this expanding field offers both a simple and intuitive discussion of the basic concepts of this subject and an insight into the challenging problems of current research. In a wholly lucid manner the work covers single-particle motions, fluid equations for plasmas, wave motions, diffusion and resistivity, Landau damping, plasma instabilities and nonlinear problems. For students, this outstanding text offers a painless introduction to this important field; for teachers, a large collection of problems; and for researchers, a concise review of the fundamentals as well as original treatments of a number of topics never before explained so clearly. This revised edition contains new material on kinetic effects, including Bernstein waves and the plasma dispersion function, and on nonlinear wave equations and solitons.
Customer Reviews:
Better than Bittencourt........2007-07-04
Good solid introduction to plasma physics. Fairly general introduction geared towards advanced undergraduates and grad students. There are better books which concentrate on applications, both of which I own. Sturrock for geophysical and earth plasma physics and Kulsrud for astrophysics.
Plasma physicists do it with confinement.......2007-02-10
I took an intro to plasma physics class using this book at the undergraduate level - and this book was perfect. It has a good blend of experimental evidence, theory, and math. The derivations are really good, you can follow along in the margins. The pictures are clear and beautiful, the page layout easy on the eyes. This is not a graduate text, but aimed at the advanced undergrad level. You should already know calculus, complex analysis, EM, and linear algebra before learning this material.
Clearly and simplified.......2007-01-24
The texts of this book are not long, but are very clear in physics concepts and are simplied:
1.All important math steps to prove the physics are mentioned(not released to the reader) in simplied way so that readers can know clearly both the math steps and physics meanings without being buffered by complecated math steps.
2.The author mentioned clearly the physics meaning of any equation.
I am a bachalor of physics, such kind of textbook(clear and simple and friendly) I had had only two:textbook named "Introduction to Electrodynamic" and "Introduction to Quantum Mechanics" written by famous author,Mr. Grify.
As a result,I think it is a very good textbook,at least for students who start to learn plamsa physics.
Really not a graduate text.......2007-01-04
I picked up this book for my graduate plasma 1 class alongside Goldston's book. The material is geared towards undergrads and would have been great had I picked up the book two years ago. Instead I found that I hardly opened Chen and stuck with Goldston or course notes. So if you are an undergrad or someone who is just generally interested in plasma physics this is probably what you should be buying. If you are a grad student and don't have it already then there is a decent chance that if you buy this book all you will get out of it is a warm feeling in your heart from knowing that you have the same book on your shelf that every other plasma physicist has.
It Just Keeps Coming in Handy.......2005-10-18
I first bought this text for an undergraduate course in plasmas, and I liked it then -- Chen's first few chapters will get you through the basics without any undue suffering (you'll hurt because the subject can be difficult, not because the text is unclear.) After spending a few months on my shelf, it reappeared for some research I was doing that required me to get comfortable with a few different types of plasma waves. Now Chen has come back into my life -- I'm taking a graduate course in kinetic theory of plasmas, and I find myself opening up this book on a daily basis to figure something out. This textbook has served me well, and if you're doing work (coursework or research) in the plasmas field, it will likely serve you well, too. The first four or five chapters are written so that a senior-level physics undergrad can understand them, so you get a nice conceptual grasp of the subject (as well as good reference material on more advanced topics.)
One point: I wouldn't recommend buying this as a "teach yourself plasma physics on a desert island" kind of book. If you can find someone who knows the subject, though, Chen will help you to learn a lot after they've explained a few basic points.
Basic subjects covered are:
Orbit theory (single particle motion, adiabatic invariants)
Fluid approximation
Plasma waves (O, X, R, L, acoustic, and many others)
Diffusion and resistivity
Equilibrium/stability issues
Kinetic theory
Assorted non-linear effects

Nuclear Reactor Physics
ASIN: 0471880795 |
Book Description
A broad, comprehensive introduction that brings together all aspects of magnetic fusion and magnetic fusion technology. Each topic is developed from first principles to engineering applications. Special features are the inclusion of physical property data relevant to fusion technology, and a summary of fusion reactor design parameters.
Book Description
This textbook accommodates the two divergent developmental paths which have become solidly established in the field of fusion energy: the process of sequential tokamak development toward a prototype and the need for a more fundamental and integrative research approach before costly design choices are made.
Emphasis is placed on the development of physically coherent and mathematically clear characterizations of the scientific and technological foundations of fusion energy which are specifically suitable for a first course on the subject. Of interest, therefore, are selected aspects of nuclear physics, electromagnetics, plasma physics, reaction dynamics, materials science, and engineering systems, all brought together to form an integrated perspective on nuclear fusion and its practical utilization.
The book identifies several distinct themes. The first is concerned with preliminary and introductory topics which relate to the basic and relevant physical processes associated with nuclear fusion. Then, the authors undertake an analysis of magnetically confined, inertially confined, and low-temperature fusion energy concepts. Subsequently, they introduce the important blanket domains surrounding the fusion core and discuss synergetic fusion-fission systems. Finally, they consider selected conceptual and technological subjects germane to the continuing development of fusion energy systems.
Customer Reviews:
Great Introductory Fusion Book.......2007-07-16
This is a great Introductory fusion book for anyone that is just starting out in this field of plasma physics. It explains all of he fundimentals very well.
Good introductory text........2001-08-07
I was looking for an introductory text that was current and that would cover the most popular approaches. I didn't want something directed at the popular level (little or no math), but I also didn't want a text that would go into agonizing analysis of every plasma instability under the sun. There are many fine books on plasma physics (e.g F. F. Chen's "Introduction to Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion"); that is not what I was looking for and that is not the emphasis of this text.
This covers the basic physics and explains the basic concepts behind several of the more popular fusion approaches. The reader should have college level physics and calculus to get the most out of this book. I found it useful but not comprehensive (you can only fit so much in under 300 pages). So if you want to know the fusion cross-section of, say, p + B reactions, you'll need to locate other information sources. But you will find reaction cross-section tabulations on d + t, d + d, etc. reactions as a function of energy.

Gothic (The New Critical Idiom)
ASIN: 0521664586 |
Book Description
A genre of supernatural fiction was among the more improbable products of the Age of Enlightenment. This book questions the historical reasons for its growing popularity in the late eighteenth century. Beginning with the notorious case of the Cock Lane ghost, a performing poltergeist who became a major attraction in London in 1762, and with Garrick's spellbinding and paradigmatic performance as the ghost-seeing Hamlet, it moves on to look at the Gothic novels of Horace Walpole, Ann Radcliffe, M. G. Lewis, and others, in unexpected new lights, drawing out the connection between fictions of the supernatural and the growth of consumerism.
Customer Reviews:
History of the Gothic.......2000-04-18
This book is an excellent read for anyone with an interest in the history or scholarship the Gothic or "horrible" literature in general. Its focus on the shift in English society to a more luxury and consumer-driven economy, during the time when supernatural literature developed as a genre, becomes a little dense at times, if that isn't one's area of particular interest. However, it is full of insight into the reading public that made the field of supernatural fiction what it remains today, and why people found it (and by extension, still find it) so entertaining to be shocked and frightened by unreal events.
