Russia's Fate Through Russian Eyes: Perspectives of a New Generation
Manufacturer: Westview Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0813338662 |
Book Description
Over 25 young Russian intellectuals describe the perplexing, sometimes shocking, and often contradictory evolution of their troubled country. This ground-breaking book blows the cobwebs off antiquated notions of Russia as an enigmatic nation doomed to tragic failure. In this anthology, thirty young Russian intellectuals, representatives of a new generation who came of age during and after the fall of the Soviet Union, record the hopes, fears, and triumphs of recent years. Essays and interviews with these trailblazers, part of the first post-Soviet generation to achieve positions of leadership in Russia, share stories of the very concrete actions they and others like them have taken to move Russia toward a more civilized, responsible, and vibrant society. Collectively, they paint the picture of a country borne up in its many travails by a stubborn will to survive and a capacity to adapt ingeniously and swiftly to changes, both welcome and unwelcomeCustomer Reviews:
In Their Own Words.......2001-03-02
According to many reports, one would think that all Russians were vodka-swilling philosophers, world-weary sex goddesses, or gold-chained criminals. Obviously, these elements are present in Russian life, as indeed they are elsewhere, but the sheer complexity of this country is glossed over when the West reduces its understanding of Russians to simple categories and tired stereotypes.
What Heyward Isham has managed to do so beautifully in this anthology is allow the contributors to discuss their own lives in their own words. In doing so, he blows the tired stereotype of the "passive, lazy Russian" to smithereens.
I don't know if I've ever read as eloquent and evocative an essay as Olga Lobyzeva's discussion of Russia's Far North. It reads like a love affair. Theater director Vladimir Mirzoev provides a fascinating dialogue on the state of art in the New Russia the likes of which I've never seen anywhere, either. Frankly, some of the pieces on tax reform and labor laws left me a bit cold, but just listen to Nadezhda Azhgikhina talk about feminism, gender roles, and the media representation of women in Russia today! Why isn't this woman an internationally renowned figure? Why isn't Ms. magazine profiling her? Why isn't she teaching college courses at home and abroad?
In short, I learned from this book as I've seldom learned from any source on Russia. Letting Russians speak to an international audience in their own words is such a simple idea -- but who else has done this? I recommend this book highly to Russophiles like myself, as well as anyone with a natural curiosity as to how people in other parts of the world are living, struggling, working, and dreaming.

Methods in Enzymology, Volume 150: Immunochemical Techniques, Part K: In Vitro Models of B and T Cell Function and Lymphoid Cell Receptors
Manufacturer: Academic Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0121820513 |
Book Description
In this volume, in vitro models for the study of lymphoid cell functions and methods for the study of lymphoid cell receptors are presented. Lymphocyte in vitro transformation is discussed in the first section that describes methods for the in vitro stimulation of lymphocytes. Some special media for the study of lymphocyte transformation are also discussed. In vitro methods have been very useful for the understanding of the differentiation of lymphoid cells. The more commonly used of these methods are presented in the second section. The third section deals with the receptors of lymphoid cells.

Well explained - a pleasure to read.......2003-10-22
About a decade ago i completed a postgraduate maths/physics degree so I suppose that may give me an "edge" over some readers. However, the book begins with an introduction to calculus involving many variables which is really the only maths used in the entire book.
The book is certainly simple - you won't find much mention of statistical mechanics, for example - but I believe it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of chemical thermodynamics.
There is a companion to this book containing answers to many of the exercises.

Book Description
Uses the classical (phenomenological) approach to thermodynamics as opposed to the statistical. Applies theory to chemical, biological and geological problems. Provides complete coverage of essential mathematical tools and computational techniques. This edition contains new chapters on thermodynamics of the electrochemical cell, Eh/pH diagrams, a revised chapter on estimation of thermodynamic properties plus treatment of the latest work in electrolyte solutions. Additional problems reflect new applications.Customer Reviews:
A introductory text for chemists, biologists and geologist.......2001-02-23
I. M. Klotz and R. M. Rosenberg focussed their "Chemical thermodynamics" for the chemistry student, although some applications in geology and biology are also taught.
The chapter of mathematical preparation is straightforward and perfectly complemented by the analytical and graphical mathematical techniques shown in chapter twenty-three.
I hope that the reader agrees with me in that the Klotz and Rosenberg's discussion of enthalpy and enthalpy of reaction is excellent.
In the subsequent pages we find topics in ideal and real gases, Gibbs free energy, useful work, phase transitions, chemical potential, the second and third laws and non-electrolyte solutions.
Finally, it should be emphasized that the treatment of electrolyte solutions has been updated.

The Non-Local Universe: The New Physics and Matters of the Mind
Robert Nadeau , and Menas Kafatos Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195144082 |
Book Description
Classical physics states that physical reality is local, or that a measurement at one point in space cannot cannot influence what occurs at another beyond a fairly short distance. Until recently this seemed like an immutable truth in nature. However, in 1997 experiments were conducted in which light particles (photons) originated under certain conditions and traveled in opposite directions to detectors located about seven miles apart. The amazing results indicated that the photons "interacted" or "communicated" with one another instantly or "in no time," leading to the revelation that physical reality is non-local--a discovery that Robert Nadeau and Menas Kafatos view as "the most momentous in the history of science." In pursuing this groundbreaking argument, the authors provide a fascinating history of developments that led to the discovery of non-locality and the sometimes heated debate between the great scientists responsible for these discoveries. What this new knowledge reveals, the authors conclude, is that the connection between mind and nature is far more intimate than we previously dared to imagine. What they offer is a revolutionary look at the implications of non-locality, implications that reach deep into that most intimate aspect of humanity--consciousness.Customer Reviews:

That having been said, the underlying issues are fascinating, and some of the discussion so well-informed and thought-provoking (eg about the inadequacies of simple darwinism)...that it is worth the struggle. However I suggest that the book would have been far stronger if it had begun with the "facts" ie the experimental results explained extremely clearly...and moved onto a discussion of aspects of the implications of the "facts".
