Book Description
Clifford Gaddy's and Barry Ickes' paradigm of the "virtual economy" has fundamentally changed the way people think about Russia's economy. Circulated at the highest levels of the Russian and U.S. governments and reported in leading publications worldwide, their thesisthat Russia's economy is based on illusion or pretense about nearly every important economic yardstick, including prices, sales, wages and budgetshas forced broad recognition of the inadequacies of the intended market reform policies in Russia. More important, their work has provided a coherent framework for understanding how and why so much of Russia's economy has resisted reform.
Gaddy and Ickes now use the virtual economy concept to project the near-and middle-term future of the Russian economy and suggest possible policy responses. Drawing on new empirical material from published and unpublished sources and from their own extensive field work in Russia, the authors examine critical aspects of the virtual economy: manufacturing enterprises, households and the public sectors, both local and federal. For the first time, they will also integrate the financial and agricultural sectors into their model. Gaddy's and Ickes' book can be expected to be a seminal work for understanding the inner workings of the Russian economy.

Don't go into court without this!.......2007-09-01
As a Pro Se Petitioner, I have found this book to be incredibly helpful! It explains all of the ins and outs of trial, how to organize a trial notebook, how to arrange your questioning, and how to cross examine among many other important facts. This book contains the inforation that lawyers know, that we need to know, but have not gone to many years of school. It is written in plain English, and is a MUST for anyone looking to go into or try to avoid going to trial!
Fantastic reference for the layperson.......2007-04-17
I was thoroughly impressed how well written and easy to understand this book is. Each step is completely explained, referenced and many documents have examples printed right in the book. There are great tips and tricks to deal with opposing counsel as well as warnings for what type of red flags and tricks to watch for from the other side. This book is an asset for the novice to the more experienced pro se litigator. Definitely a Five Star book.
The best friend for pro se litigants in the strange land of law........2006-07-14
This is one of the best books I have read and enjoyed about pro se litigation. The large font, great white space, and properly displayed summary tables render the book easy to endure and utilize. The authors offer many proverbs and examples for lay people that alleviate the harshness of legal lingo. Moreover, they even translate the formal and non-technical English words into layman's language. For example, words such as "sanction, impeach, strike, motion, cross, re-cross, direct, and re-direct" are simplified to common readers to mean "punish, discredit, delete, request, and questioning of witnesses in different setting".
The authors realize the hardship of hiring a good and trustworthy lawyer and assist the readers in understanding their rights for self-representation. Not only you will learn how not to be a fool pro se, but also how to expose the foolishness of ill-prepared lawyers and how to feel home among busy birds of a feather different from yours.
The book dissects the court room like an anatomy specimen and shows the reader where everyone belongs. (In one of the traffic violation I attended, a defendant brought his 5-year old son to the courtroom, was not able to control his running between the judge's legs and messing up stacks of papers on the reporter's desk.) This book will familiarize you with the territory such that you will avoid acting childishly. Aside from running between the judge's legs, the pro se will learn how to seek permission to approach a witness, to admit exhibits, to strike evidence, and so on.
The paper work phase is explained in great details to remove the anxiety of the long and contentious process that follows. It offers assurance that anxiety and fear are natural reaction to performing on a stage of adversarial nature. Actors, teachers, lawyers go through what a pro se litigant goes through in laboring to defend his or her arguments. It offers forms for different filing purposes, describes exhibits and trial notebook, and explains how to respond to and make objections.
The trial dissection is also magnificent in describing in details the phases of paper work filing, subject and personal jurisdiction, statute of limitation, and the development of the trial process from filling answers, motions, pretrial material, discovery, and evidentiary issue.
The trial process is well described as well to entail opening statement, direct and cross examination, closing statement. It is preceded with extensive elaboration on how settlement, aberration, and mediation most of times cut the process short of a trial.
The elaborate description of informal and formal discovery process is very helpful to pro se litigants since it saves the exuberant amount of money spent on lawyers to gather documents, depose witness, and disclose evidence. The thorough details of the techniques of discovery are presented in bulleted subsections, each with its advantages and disadvantages.
The book extends it discussion to post-trail phases of appeals and judgment. It then delves into specialized areas such as divorce and bankruptcy. The coherence of the book topics serves the readers a great deal in enabling pro se to focus on pertinent legal claims, their elements, the facts that address each element, and the evidence required to prove the facts.
Three trivial problems are noticeable. One, pages are numbered according to chapters which forces the reader to remember two instead of one number when trying to memorize latest page read. Two, referencing to legal coach is excessively used while the book is intended to self-represented parties. Three, excessive branching of references for further reading are everywhere despite the good 24 healthy chapters of the book.

You CAN represent yourself in court!.......2007-02-20
I used a few books including this one and You Don't Need a Lawyer. I did represent myself in court and was proud of that. If you have logical mind and believe in what you are doing you can win in court without expensive lawyer.
THANKS NOLO for putting this book out! JUST what I needed!.......2005-10-25
I LOVE this book! Very thorough, endless hints and tips. I am no longer afraid or to bring my own case and feel informed and competent. This book tells you with frank honesty what to expect, where you may encounter trouble and helps you handle almost any situation. I recommend it to EVERYONE.
Legal Information You Can Bank On!.......2004-07-22
In my capacity of monitoring the information desk for Chicago's main library, the Harold Washington Library, I come in contact with numerous people who are embroiled in legal battles and who need some accurate guidance in plain English. This book, "Represent Yourself In Court," is one of the books I recommend the most for those who have minor legal issues and can't afford (or choose not) to hire an attorney. It walks you through a whole range of legal proceedings from start to finish. It also presents questions for you to ponder before you decide to initiate legal action. It's written for civil litigation, not criminal. It also gives information about settling a matter, and gives pointers on how to decide if yu need professional help.
One woman who I'd recommended the book to used it to guide her through the divorce proceedings pertaining to her 20-year marriage. The next time she saw me, she couldn't thank me enough for recommending the book. She talked about how the chapter dealing with depositions saved her hundreds of dollars. She also told me that since then one of the authors, Paul Bergman, has put out another book, "Nolo's Deposition Handbook," and she has found it equally useful. I decided to check that book out too, to see if it's another resource I could recommend to folk. It is! I'm equally impressed with its thoroughness and the soundness of its information. In fact, so much so that I've also written a review for it on Amazon's web site. So if your matter involves giving a deposition, also check out my review of that book.
A Good, but necessarily limited, intro to the legal system.......2003-06-01
Overall, I'd give this a positive rating, but since it's written for all 50 states, it is so broad in its coverage that it makes it difficult to learn about how to pursue your lawsuit in your particular state.
I'd suggest reading this book and trying to fill out forms as you go. Pick up the 'local rules' from your own court, and study them for what Bergman doesn't tell you.
One thing I will say, though, is that one bit of advice was invaluable...on visiting the court before your motion or case is heard. I did this, and it took a lot of the mystery out of the whole process.
By doing this, by the way, I was completely surprised that (in the motion hearings) that most of what took place was pretty much on a par with small claims court, with a few legal latin phrases peppering the give-and-take. Most of the motions I heard consisted of two things: Why one or the other party failed to meet deadlines, and trying to get the other guy's case thrown out before everyone went to trial.
One other thing that was also surprising...the opposing lawyers where pretty buddy-buddy with each other. I guess the hostility and animosity that one would associate with a lawsuit pretty much reside only in the parties to the suit themselves.
In my appearance, I took it very cool and did not act emotional at all. Let's face it...the court doesn't want to hear it. They just want to get done so they can go to lunch.
Represent Yourself in Court.......2003-01-26
This book gives an understandable rendition of the various legal
procedures involved in bringing a major lawsuit into the Court
system. It is most helpful in assisting litigants with case
organization and presentation. The work explains how to document
a case throughout the various phases of a lawsuit with particular
emphasis on presentation of exhibits for trial. The work is
written in a belles lettres style. It could be read by anyone
wanting to understand the litigation process, as well as
law students taking courses in Civil Litigation. The book could
be useful in organizing a case so that a lawyer could pick it
up at a later time. Very often, the details of a claim may not
be fully known until the deposition process has been completed.
I would supplement this book with the purchase of a Civil
Procedure book if the intention is to complete the entire process
right through to trial. This work focuses on the documentation
you will need to develop in order to prove a case at trial.
The work has a good coverage of negotiation strategies.
Ultimately, it is in your interest to deal with a lawyer during
a formal negotiation in order to ascertain that you've secured
a fair deal.It pays to become familiar with a local legal
library as a supplement to this text. In addition, you should
utilize the internet in order to review similar cases
in the various Court jurisdictions relating to your case.
Sometimes it pays to talk to a lawyer who has completed a similar
case in order to gain perspective on the intricacies of the
whole process. This text gives you a good start.
It would be most helpful in organizing the type of case
that only develops after the deposition process is complete.
Early in the litigation, you should do some research in order
to identify cases similar to yours that have been decided.
The past precedent or stare decisis is very critical to
presenting a claim because it encapsules your case into
a similar fact pattern consistent with other cases that have
been decided by the Courts. It is to your benefit to do legal
research in identifying similar cases to your own either by
going into the legal libraries yourself, researching the
internet or paying a small fee for a legal research firm
to identify similar cases as the one you are filing.

(Spanish)Un muy buen libro de genetica para acuicultores.......1999-03-01

Useful, for the right reader.......2005-05-10
I'm not sure I'm that reader.
The ideal reader is wholly at home with good bits of analysis - you'll be comfortable with Lagrange multipliers, LU decomposition, quaternion representation of oriented values, and a fair bit else. You won't need the basics of classical physics, including Hamiltonians and a few projections of the Navier-Stokes equations down into tractable form. Non- and in-equilibrium dynamics, smooth and discrete representations, plus their mixed forms - you're prepared to build up from these elements.
You, the ideal reader, are not much of a programmer, though. The book built very much around extensive C sample code. I use the term "C" in some strict syntactic sense, though. The general style reminds me of FORTRAN, but the global data declarations are in the style of pre-1980 BASIC. This book is aimed at the odd mix of capable numerical analyst (which I'm not) and chemist (which I'm not), but naive software developer (which I'm not).
The strength of this book is in its code samples. The author explictly invites modification and extension. The only sane way to modify this code is to understand it thoroughly, and to understand the underlying chemistry, physics, and numerical models.
Maybe this book works well for some people, people that I admire immensely. I just wish it worked better for me.

Too much and too little........2002-05-30
This book is in some ways a reasonable introduction to MD. It's the only book I know that actually shows the derivatives of energy functions necessary for writing efficient MD code. Unfortunately it does so in a hard to follow way. This is typical of the rest of the text. The example C code is hideous both in format and style. Missing from the book are essential formulae for calculating macroscopic properties from MD simulations. It is probably the best practical guide to writing MD code, but that isn't saying much.
A good introduction to Molecular Dynamics.......2001-08-30
This book constitutes a good introduction to the methods of Molecular Dynamics. Besides clear descriptions of the methods and algorithms, it includes C example implementations commented on the book to illustrate the points. It is almost an introducory 'recipe' book. For advanced tips, Frenkel-Smit will give good lead, but at the cost of less readability and Fortran (pseudo)code.
Certainly, the underlying philosophy of the code may seem awkward initially, but it is not a matter of "C design", rather of coding philosophy and program design. Once you get to understand it, it becomes easy and "natural". And what's even more important: it reflects the program design philosophy in use in the Molecular Modelling field, hence getting used to it will help you understand most existing production code.
The electronic version of the C code (available at the book's web site) is a mesh though: it lacks comments and makes heavy use of conditional compilation to render the examples from a single, convoluted source. The ingenious programmer won't be misled by this however: a simple step with the C preprocessor will distil the actual code. Not to mean it is not inconvenient anyway (sic). Certainly, it would have been a lot better if the authors had separated, cleaned and commented the code for the examples in the electronic version.
Besides, the book comes with additional, not too difficult programming assignments that make for extra fun and deeper understanding.
Once you are done with this book, you'll be in a position to really appreciate and use Frenkel-Smit and other advanced texts.
Good book on subject, needs a REAL C second edition.......2000-08-05
This is a good and honest book on the subject, it needs a second edition in pure C language and not the 'f2c-like' used. Many techiques like linked lists are simple and clear in C but confuse when translated to Fortran (77 or the new 90/95 variants)
Excellent introduction to MD simulation.......2000-03-25
Strengths: Excellent selection of topics, with good references and enough discussion of the underlying scientific theory. Thoughtful and well-written. DO NOT USE MERELY AS A COOKBOOK!
Weaknesses: Antiquated code, basically FORTRAN with a C veneer. Although the code works as is and is blazingly fast, it's not usable as a basis for further code development -- readers will want to recast the ideas and algorithms in their own up-to-date C code. For example, his arrays start at 1; the only data structure is the array (ugh!), there are no structures. Things get hard to understand when he starts packing multiple array indices into a single composite index, then unpacks it (see, e.g., the code on autocorrelation functions, Chap. 5).
However, the awkward code is a blessing in disguise -- write your own and you'll learn an incredible amount! This book gives you all the conceptual tools to do this, and you can use the code supplied (available from the publisher) as a benchmark and check. Actually, there are a few bugs in the code, but considering its complexity (much of which is unavoidable), it is remarkably reliable. In general, the code is optimized for efficiency, not for ease of maintenance or generalization.
The author deserves any amount of thanks for writing this unique and indispensable book, which is clearly the fruit of many years of practical computing experience in a 70's, early 80's UNIX environment. The code has not aged well, but the ideas it embodies are timeless.

Book Description
During the last decade physicists, engineers and computer scientists have joined in an enormously fruitful dialogue about traffic and granular flow. Cars and sand grains have in common, that they interact irreversibly, which is the reason for similar jamming phenomena. The main difference is that car drivers choose their destination and route individually, while grains follow external driving forces. This book gives an overview about the progress in modelling, computer simulation, experiments and field observations, which was reached within the last two years. The contributions are based on the International Workshop Traffic and Granular Flow '01, which took place in Nagoya, 15 - 17 October 2001. Topics include a critical classification of models for highway traffic, new technological applications, friction and arching phenomena in pedestrian traffic, scale free networks and internet traffic, instabilities and fluctuations in avalanches and granular pipe flow.

Book Description
A first in its field, this book is both an introduction to computer simulation of liquids for upper level undergraduates and a how-to guide for specialists. The authors discuss the latest simulation techniques of molecular dynamics and the Monte Carlo methods as well as how to avoid common
programming pitfalls. Theoretical concepts and practical programming advice are amply reinforced with examples of computer simulation in action and samples of Fortran code. The authors have also included a wide selection of programs and routines on microfiche to aid chemists, physicists, chemical
engineers, and computer scientists, as well as graduate and advanced students in chemistry.
Customer Reviews:
Good book, needs an update.......2000-08-05
One of the most influential books on MD and MC, a little outdated by the year, a second edition would be welcome.
Could be better..........2000-04-11
It is a good book in general, but i feel it assumes an intermediate to advanced level of knowledge of the subject.
Quite often the explanations are not elaborate enough to understand the method discussed. A slightly more elaborate treatment would make this a first rate book.
I recommend it with no hesitation........1999-05-17
It's the book to have if you want to learn computer simulation. It covers both Monte Carlo and Molecular Dynamics, from the start for the beginner. It also includes more advanced topics, but is definitely focused on studying fluids and not solids. The code is written in Fortran. If you program in C I suggest Rapaport's book, but this one is a definite must read.

Book Description
The book provides a broad overview of the full spectrum of state-of-the-art computational activities in multiphase flow as presented by top practitioners in the field. Starting with well-established approaches (point-particle models, volume-of-fluid, level set, and front capturing for free-surface flows) it builds up to newer methods for large-eddy simulations, extended particles in Navier-Stokes flows, the lattice-Boltzmann method, molecular dynamics techniques and compressible flows with shock waves. These methods are illustrated with applications to a broad spectrum of problems involving particle dispersion and deposition, turbulence modulation, environmental flows, fluidized beds, bubbly flows, and many others.

Customer Reviews:
The Myth of Neutrality.......2006-09-18
In this day of students being taught(journalists in particular) that there is such a thing as neutrality in reporting, or religion, Dr.North puts forth the absolutely convincing thesis that it is utterly impossible to select words or defend a position without actively abandoning neutrality and allowing prejudicial thinking to creep in.. This may be more important in the long run as Dr North's massive economic commentaries on the Bible and you only fool yourself when you pretend to be neutral. Being aware of the problem is the first step to correcting it. A very important philosophical book even for those put off by Dr. North's abrasive, but always entertaining and honest style.
No religious test oaths: The weakness in the US Constitution.......2000-03-29
Requiring a Trinitarian Oath as a test for public office. This seems blasphemous to modern man. Even the modern christian. However, such oaths were part of western tradition for centuries and the US Constitution broke this tradition. In Political Polytheism, Dr. North presents a strong case from scripture and history that religion and politics are inseparable. After reading this controversial book, I was angry that my previous view of our nations foundations had been shattered. Yet at the same time, I knew that what I was reading was the truth. And for that I am thankful. This book will change the way you think about politics.
