Trivial content at an outrageous price.......2002-02-12

This book is a first for me - it's the first book to which I have ever given a one star rating. Believe me, if I could have given it no stars I would have done so.

Judy Long's book is, in every sense of the word, a slight work. It is only a modest xi + 114pp including its index and has generous whitespace and includes plenty of screenshots. Neither the editorial reviews on Amazon nor the book's back cover indicate that the book is aimed at paralegals - but I assume that such is its target market. It covers Westlaw legal research, KeyCite and Westlaw via WestMate - all at a pretty basic level.

In terms of basic accuracy and general cover I have no problem with this book. However, I do vigorously question the need for its existence. There is nothing in this book that is not covered as clearly and more comprehensively in West's own publications: Winning Research Skills (170pp), Using WestMate (29pp) and Using Westlaw.com (41pp). However, the one overwhelming advantage the West publications enjoy is that they are FREE to those who are registered as Westlaw users. On the other hand, gentle reader, Ms Long demands $38.95 for the privilege of you reading her inferior product.

I understand that West's publications are only available to Westlaw users - however, Ms Long's book assumes that you are a user. Indeed any course, whether for paralegals or law students, using this book would need Westlaw access and therefore could provide the West guides I have mentioned.

There are some books out there that really do add value to West's own guides to its products - but this book is not one of those. Perhaps the only people who might have need for a book of this kind would be non-legal casual Westlaw users, e.g. politics or history students. However, even they would be disappointed as their interface with the system would probably be through WestDoc - and this is not dealt with in the book.

VERY THOROUGH.......2006-08-18

I am a relatively new alpaca breeder with lots of questions. This book answers many of my more detailed questions and gives good resource references that are current. The appropriate health care of alpacas has a lot of controversy, but this book is objective in presenting the data. The reading is easy and once I started reading a topic I had to finish the chapter. I believe that everyone in the alpaca business should have a chance to review this book and use it as needed.

This book is a very thorough, comprehensive resource to South American Camelids. The book reads nicel. Besides being applicable to llama-medicine, many extrapolations can be made to non-domestic hoofstock and wildlife.

The only vet oriented lama book available........1998-04-30

Although the book can be a dificult read for the layman, it is THE book for medical information on lamas. Dr. Fowler has been in the forefront of the llama industry since its inception in this country. This is a must have for your veterinarian if you have a lama of any kind. The only new best thing will be his new edition due to be out soon. (Lama is the genus, such as alpaca, vicuna, llama is the particular animal)

Synthetic peptides as antigens Ciba Foundation Symposium 119 Chairman: Gordon L. Ada 1986 Vaccination is a major means of combating infectious disease but no effective vaccine is available yet for many parasitic, viral and bacterial infections. A new approach consists of vaccines based on synthetic peptides rather than native parent antigens. The contributors to this symposium discuss the antigenicity and immunogenicity of synthetic peptides and their potential use in vaccines against malaria and other serious diseases. They consider the relationship between protein conformation and antigenicity, including the role of localized mobility and the conformational changes induced when peptides bind with immunoglobulin. A new method of synthesizing peptides able to mimic discontinuous epitopes is described. The symposium opens with a review of the regulation of immune responses in vivo. Carrier molecules such as PPD are being investigated; carrier choice plays a crucial role in the anti-hCG vaccine (based on a synthetic peptide) being tested as a means of birth control, and discussed here. Synthetic peptides are also of use as research tools, as described for the analysis of IgG sites responsible for autoantibody production in rheumatoid arthritis, and the localization of the c-myc oncoprotein in normal and transformed cells and in tumour masses. All papers have been peer reviewed. This was the 4th conference arranged by ICMM on probabilistic foundations of classical and quantum physics. The first three conferences took place in 2000, 2002, and 2004. Some closely related conferences are Bohmian Mechanics 2000 and Quantum Theory: Reconsideration of Foundations 2001, 2003, and 2005. The main aim of these conferences is to understand the role that probability plays in the foundations of physics, theoretical as well as experimental, classical as well as quantum. In this conference, as well as during our previous conferences, we are glad to welcome a fruitful assembly of theoretical physicists, experimenters, mathematicians, and even philosophers interested in the foundations of probability and physics. Among important topics discussed during the conference were the probabilistic foundations of quantum mechanics, as well as the foundations of probability itself, the formation theory, quantum computing, quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation, quantum fluctuations in relation with stochastic electrodynamics, Bohmian mechanics, measurement theory, completeness and incompleteness of quantum mechanics, macroscopic quantum systems, experiments on quantum nonlocality and locality, Bell's inequality, entanglement; philosophical problems raised by quantum mechanics, and mathematical formalism. A special session devoted to the Bayesain approach to classical and quantum probability was organized.
