Economic and political windbaggery.......2002-09-11

Even Will Hutton now admits that capitalism doesn't work, but he has persuaded himself that the euro will magically make it work! He writes, "We must urge debt-financed public works programmes, scorning the paranoia about budget deficits." But the European Central Bank, which he supports, has a built-in paranoia about budget deficits and adamantly opposes debt-financed public works programmes! He has double standards - it's bad if a British government cuts our spending on health and education, but good if the ECB cuts our spending on health and education!

He predicts, "Europe will enjoy a boom as the output gap is clawed back." Some boom - four million unemployed in Germany, and rising. He sagely warns, "Calling for a different EMU [Economic and Monetary Union] - one where growth and employment have a higher priority - is a perfectly reasonable game of political charades, but it is not the choice the country faces." And then he himself calls for `a different EMU' by calling for rewriting the Maastricht Treaty which spawned EMU!

He concludes, "It is true that in a single-currency area the members lose the right to adjust their exchange rate and interest rate. In truth they have little autonomy now. What they gain is exchange rate stability, more control of fiscal policy, and the chance to develop national policies that reflect national choices within the overall umbrella of monetary union." So under EMU we lose rights and gain chances - just like what the capitalist market `offers'!

THE LAW IS A LEGAL FICTION; OUR COURTS A LETHAL CIRCUS AND A THEATRE OF THE ABSURD.......2007-02-11

This book now seven years old should be required reading for each and every citizen of a democratic society, and ours too.

The author Dr. Hasian, with an additional doctorate in the Law, demystifies legal rhetoric and demands transparency for every citizen. He brilliantly reviews the history of law in America, including the Rosewood incident, Leo Frank, Holocaust trials, Typhoid Mary and quarantine, and John Brown declaring Natural Law at Harper's Ferry. He uncovers a "deep chasm between the principles of law and their dissemination in the public sphere" and protests the "Artificial boundaries . . . created between "principles" and mere opinion, judicial and "extrajudicial claims, the "rule of Law" and politics."

Interestingly this important polemical work was published in the year 2000, just before the interventionist Scalia-OConnor-Thomas-Rhenquist court threw our national elections, and before the invention of the legal issues surrounding Guantanamo, the suspension of Habeus Corpus, Abu Graibh, the violations of the War Powers Act, and the suspension of the United States Consitution by the current self-imposed administration. This book could be written to address each of these issues, unimaginable then. Or, rather, this book, and this author, would no longer find a publisher.

This courageous and insightful author guides us through this well footnoted book to become "skeptical of the claims of empowered decision makers who argue that they alone understand the "rule of law" while others misinterpret jurisprudental standards." He demands in our common and democratic social contract that all citizens be heard in the making and enforcing of the law, as our founders require of us. He supports his insights with equally brilliant quotations, including this from Peter Goodrich:

"Law is a literature which denies its literary qualities. It is a play on words which asserts an absolute seriousness; it is a genre of rhetoric which represses its moments of intention or fiction; it is a language that hides its indeterminacy in the justificatory discourse of judgment; it is a procedure based upon analogy, metaphor and repetition, and yet it claims to being a cold or disembodied prose. . . . It is in short, a speech or writing which forgets the violence of the word and the terror or jurisdiction of the text."

In short there is only one eternal, universal and infallible law for all peoples at all times, one of whose very simple clauses reads:
Thou shalt not kill.

I look forward to and pray for the good Doctor's update of this excellent and correct assessment of man's arbitrary and politicized law and its unjust application in our times. The situation has only become much worse.

Disclaimer: I am the author of one of the chapters in this book.

This is one of the best encyclopedias of industrial technology that is available. The volume is updated regularly to keep up with emerging technologies, and contains enough information to be useful to someone not "expert" in a given field while being easy to read and understand.

It is the "go to" reference for background material on all major industrial processes. If you are interested in the technology of "how things" work in the huge and diverse world of chemical technology, this is the book for you.

Perry Miller -- who, regardless of what the credit on top says, was not the photographer in this pictureless collection, but the editor -- was the twentieth century's most towering colonial historian. Terrifying generation after generation of graduate students at Harvard, Miller was one of those people who knew absolutely everything about his subject: the American Puritans. A confirmed atheist, Miller spent his life exploring the lives of the most religious of all American groups. This anthology, which has been in print for the better part of half-a-century, is still the basic introduction to the subject in most schools. Taking excerpts on all the most important subjects, Miller introduces each with his own framework of ideas and connections; although the ellipses can come to annoy once you really get into the subject, there is still no good substitute for this collection. Indispensable to anybody wanting the primary texts of that most influential of all religious groups in America, the Puritans.
