    Book Description

Until now, there has been little coordinated research on the role of women in the economics of developing countries, or on the impact of the international economy on women in those countries. Here, Susan Joekes not only examines women who are engaged in what is defined as gainful, or wage earning employment, she also considers the role of women in unpaid labor such as household work, farm work on their own land, and other activities that put them in the position of managing resources. Specially commissioned by the United Nations International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Womem (INSTRAW), this study examines such topics as trade and finance, technological change, agriculture, industry, services, and emerging trends in the international economy as related to women, and concludes with proposals for innovative development policies.

I felt that was too much to pay for a book that did not have a cover. I was really disapointed, but I guess it beats paying the full price.

                                  Book Description

Hardbound. In this volume of the Handbook of Statistics with the primary focus on bioenvironmental and public health statistics, a rather off-beat approach has been taken, wherein biostatistical methods that are relevant to the dissemination of bioenvironmental and public health investigations have been thoroughly emphasised, and placed side by side with the fruitful applications. One aspect of statistical methodology that merits special appraisal is the extent of appropriateness of some standard statistical tools in such non-standard applications, and much of the deliberation in this volume is geared to alternative non-standard and application oriented methodology that have been developed to suit better bioenvironmental and public health studies.

                                    Book Description

Numerical Methods in Astrophysics: An Introduction outlines various fundamental numerical methods that can solve gravitational dynamics, hydrodynamics, and radiation transport equations. This resource indicates which methods are most suitable for particular problems, demonstrates what the accuracy requirements are in numerical simulations, and suggests ways to test for and reduce the inevitable negative effects. After an introduction to the basic equations and derivations, the book focuses on practical applications of the numerical methods. It explores hydrodynamic problems in one dimension, N-body particle dynamics, smoothed particle hydrodynamics, and stellar structure and evolution. The authors also examine advanced techniques in grid-based hydrodynamics, evaluate the methods for calculating the gravitational forces in an astrophysical system, and discuss specific problems in grid-based methods for radiation transfer. The book incorporates brief user instructions and a CD-ROM of the numerical codes, allowing readers to experiment with the codes to suit their own needs. With numerous examples and sample problems that cover a wide range of current research topics, this highly practical guide illustrates how to solve key astrophysics problems, providing a clear introduction for graduate and undergraduate students as well as researchers and professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good introduction!.......2007-09-22

This is an extremely well written introduction to a rapidly developing field. The authors cover a broad swath of topics, providing a clear understanding of the physical principles underlying numerical astrophysics. Such a focus on basic principles and physical understanding ensures that one does not lose sight of the forest for the trees. I recommend this book highly for graduate students in astrophysics, as well as active researchers in the field who want a quick overview before going into the details.

                                    1 out of 5 stars HUGE disappointment.......2007-04-08

I was really looking forward to this title, hoping in a book that would go beyond the usual toy problems of typical standard numerical simulations books. Also knowing that this book included real working code I was also hoping it would bridge the huge gap between theory and practice with a practical approach. Boy, was I mistaken. hard to believe, but there is not a single line of code in this book! The numerical codes in Fortran (yuk) are just dumped in the CD and superficially described (just barely saying what it does and what the input and output are) in a final 10 pages ( yes, you read that well, 10 pages) "chapter" that looks more like an appendix to anyone with a little common sense. I know college professors can be a bit disoriented about what is important and what not in their field of research (I still my quantum mechanics prof. employed approximately the same time to try to explain us while there are 2n+1 numbers between n and -n and to introduce us to Fourier Transforms) but this is really too much! The bunch of theory and equations that this book is littered is totally useless unless you show me how these equations get implemented in code.
And if I have to wade through the code in a CD trying to figure it out by myself, what is the value of buying this book? Given this approach , I really pity the grad students of these guys...

This monograph provides an accessible introduction to the theory, and the large-scale simulation methods currently used in radiation hydrodynamics, the study of the dynamics of matter interacting with radiation, when the radiation is strong enough to have a profound effect on the matter. Radiation hydrodynamics applies to normal stars, exploding stars or stars with violent winds, active galaxies, and on Earth wherever matter is very hot. The volume is a valuable text for research scientists and graduate students in physics and astrophysics.

5 out of 5 stars Representing the Current State of the Art.......2006-12-14

This book began with a series of lectures given for the summer School on Radiactive Transfer and Radiation Hydrodynamics at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo in June, 1999. Those talks focused on the specifics of the dynamic coupling of radiation and matter and on the detailed processes of the interaction.

It is the nature of such lectures that they are more descriptive rather than mathematically inclined. The years since the lectures have been spent in providing a numerical basis for many of the areas that were light in those areas.

Note that radiation as discussed in this book is part of the very high densigy radiation seen in astrophysics in areas like exploding stars. It is not related to the much lower radiation levels seen on Earth or in medical applications. Within it's selected areas of interest it represents the current state of the art in the field.

                                        Book Description

The idea of the book is to provide a comprehensive overview of computational physics methods and techniques, that are used for materials modeling on different length and time scales. Each chapter first provides an overview of the physical basic principles which are the basis for the numerical and mathematical modeling on the respective length scale.

The book includes the micro scale, the meso-scale and the macro scale. The chapters follow this classification. The book will explain in detail many tricks of the trade of some of the most important methods and techniques that are used to simulate materials on the perspective levels of spacial and temporal resolution. Case studies are occassionally included to further illustrate some methods or theoretical considerations. Example applications for all techniques are provided, some of which are from the author’s own contributions to some of the research areas. Methods are explained, if possible, on the basis of the original publications but also references to standard text books established in the various fields are mentioned.

                                              Book Description

This book covers the principle hydrodynamic and calorimetric techniques for studying protein-ligand interactions. A ligand is an atom, molecule, or ion that can bind to a specific site ona protein, and the interactions between any protein and its ligands are fundamental for the protein to function properly.

                                                      Book Description

The Early American Women Writers series offers rare works of fiction by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century women, each reprinted it its entirety, each with a foreword by General Editor Cathy N. Davidson, who places the novel in a historical and literary perspective. Ranging from serious cautionary tales about moral corruption to amusing and trenchant social satire, these books provide today's reader with a unique window into the earliest American popular fiction and way of life. Written in 1822, A New-England Tale is the first of Catherine Sedgwick's twenty novels in addition to the one hundred short magazine pieces she published in her lifetime. The story of an orphan girl in rural New England and the moral and religious trials she faces as she grows up, this intriguing portrait provides a unique look at the religious and political climate of this crucial period in America's development as a country. Addressing many of the complex religious, political, and philosophical issues of the time, as well as theoretical issues of the woman writer, A New-England Tale is a classic nineteenth-century story of a young woman's moral and material triumphs.
