Some musicians recoil at the thought that their band is a business. They believe that their music is their art, and don't want to sully it with commerce. That's all well and good--but wouldn't you give up your day job if you had the chance? Music Law can help you see your band as a business and turn it into a successful one. Musician and attorney Richard Stim has filled this useful book with helpful advice on solving disputes between band members, dealing with lawyers, managers, and record companies, and even the increasingly important matter of sample clearance. The advice is extremely thorough; for example, the chapter on band names includes information on researching your band's name to ensure it isn't already in use, what happens if two bands have the same name, and even how to register your band's name and logo. Because he advises getting all agreements in writing, Stim has provided dozens of sample agreement forms, both as blank hard copies in the book and as templates on the enclosed disk. Throughout the book, Stim provides important legal advice, all translated from stilted legalese into simple English. Both big and little names get into these difficulties sometimes; the book is peppered with cautionary tales of real musicians and their legal squabbles. Music Law can help you avoid such pitfalls and get your band's business running smoothly--so you might be able to quit that day job, after all. --C.B. Delaney

Good title.......2006-05-20
Running and taking care of the band's business could be a tough and demanding job! If you need help in managing your financials, contracts and especially legal stuff you may choose this book but music business isn't limited here! Apparently that is the aspect most of the people are focused on but that doesn't make a great record and great publicity and you need those before even thinking about managing your business. So if you really want to get to this point first you should read: "How To Make A Furtune In The Music Industry By Doing It Yourself: Your Personal Step-By-Step Guide To Having A Successful Career In The Music Business. ... To Sell Music, Book Shows And Get Noticed!" which teaches you everything from scratch not only parts of this amazing tough world.

Book Description
This excellent volume provides a well-balanced review of activity-dependent modifications of synaptic efficacy which follow noxious events, and is based on the symposium "Towards the Neurobiology of Chronic Pain", organized in Siena, at the Certosa di Pontignano. The book will contribute to the continuing interest in understanding pain reinforcement by the brain. This emerging new concept can in turn be expected to have a great impact on the development of clinical paradigms of pain prevention and rehabilitation.

Book Description
In the 1930s, physics was in a crisis. There appeared to be no way to reconcile the new theory of quantum mechanics with Einstein's theory of relativity. Several approaches had been tried and had failed. In the post-World War II period, four eminent physicists rose to the challenge and developed a calculable version of quantum electrodynamics (QED), probably the most successful theory in physics. This formulation of QED was pioneered by Freeman Dyson, Richard Feynman, Julian Schwinger, and Sin-Itiro Tomonaga, three of whom won the Nobel Prize for their work. In this book, physicist and historian Silvan Schweber tells the story of these four physicists, blending discussions of their scientific work with fascinating biographical sketches.
Setting the achievements of these four men in context, Schweber begins with an account of the early work done by physicists such as Dirac and Jordan, and describes the gathering of eminent theorists at Shelter Island in 1947, the meeting that heralded the new era of QED. The rest of his narrative comprises individual biographies of the four physicists, discussions of their major contributions, and the story of the scientific community in which they worked. Throughout, Schweber draws on his technical expertise to offer a lively and lucid explanation of how this theory was finally established as the appropriate way to describe the atomic and subatomic realms.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2002-10-27
Love it so far. Brilliant insight into not just the men behind the theories - but also physics itself.
Superb overview of the development of QED..........2001-09-11
This book is a superb overview of the development of QED. The slant is geared towards the major personalities involved in it's development. The key players of course were: Feynman, Schwinger, Dyson, and Tomonaga. The text is quite detailed and is directed towards the academic community and assumes a cursory knowledge of quantum mechanics. That being the case, I got lost in much of the math. However, I kept at it and got much out of the book. If you are a physics major then this book will be a jewel to own. What an experience to "see" the human mind come up with ideas which at first glance seem impossible but later turn out to be perfectly true. The writing is quite turgid as is the case with books put out by Princeton, but the material is just fantastic. If the math overwhelms you, as it did me, just get the main idea down and forge on. Later, if time and patience permits re-visit the portion that got you lost and try again. I did this but still am lost in many areas. Nevertheless, a great read!!
Thorough Coverage of the Pinaccle of 20th Century Physics.......1999-11-25
This is a very technical and historical review of the creation of the 20th Centuries most accurate of all physics, QED. The work is very complete and besides the mathematics, it provides excellant yet terse backgrounds of the 4 major players: Tomonaga, Schwinger, Feynman and Dyson. The backgounds of these personalities is weaved into their astounding developments leading to QED. This book should not only serve as a historical timepiece, but I beleive it could serve very well as an adjunct to even graduate level physics.
Book Description
In the tradition of Mona Simpson’s Anywhere But Here, Places to Look for a Mother tells a tale of mostly maddening mother-daughter bonds. Forgiveness is always there, but it’s hard to find. And Stansbury’s fractured Taylor family, led by the thoroughly eccentric matriarch, Miriam Taylor, usually loses it. With lithe prose, pitch-perfect dialogue, and gloriously real characters, author Nicole Stansbury conjures a family that proves Tolstoy right once again: All happy families are alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. The Taylors are no exception, but Places to Look for a Mother is an exceptionally good debut novel.
Customer Reviews:
A self-centered woman who borders on mentally ill, messing up her daughters' lives..........2007-06-20
Lucy Taylor might just have a shot at life -- at being part of the popular crowd at school, at succeeding academically, at simply being comforted by routines -- if it weren't for her mother. Thanks to Miriam, both Lucy and her older sister Jen are constantly forced to start over at new schools in new states, based on whatever current whim or boyfriend has made her decide to abruptly uproot their lives.
Even when their parents were still married, life was hardly normal. During Lucy and Jen's 1960s childhood, when most of their friends' mothers were busy taking care of their households, Miriam wants to live out all her fantasies. For a brief stint at a local taco shop, she morphs into Juanita, a Mexican woman she truly believes is her "real" self. When Juanita fails, though, Miriam is hardly daunted; you can guess she's got limitless other personalities ready at a moment's notice. The worst part is, when she becomes her new self, she truly believes that's who she is.
Despite it all, Lucy and Jen do their best to remain loyal and loving daughters...no easy task, when Miriam does things like read Lucy's diary and pronounce the girls lucky to get attention when her many boyfriends attempt sexual advances. She makes absolutely no effort to hide her own sex life from the girls, and forbids Lucy to attend the prom, claiming that if she herself didn't get to attend a formal dance, neither can her daughters. (Miriam flat-out denies the truth of the photo Lucy found, of her teenage self quite obviously dressed up for a dance.) In Miriam's world, she is the ruler; no matter how crazy or self-centered she may become, she feels she is able to dictate all the rules and rewrite history according to her own whims.
If only she could live with her father, Lucy believes, she could escape the madness and at last have the opportunity to finish high school with some semblance of normality. But her father's disappeared...or has he? Miriam claims he's gone and doesn't pay child support; one of Miriam's lovers claims otherwise. Does he truly not care? Or is he simply unable to continue combating his ex-wife's insanity, even for the love of his daughters?
As this story takes readers through the Taylors' lives, across many states and nearly two decades, it's impossible not to become intrigued. Lucy's voice is real and engaging, even as it becomes difficult to distinguish the truth from the fantasies all around her.
Avoid this Novel if You Have Similar Trauma.......2006-03-23
A minority opinion, no doubt, but unless you have completely resolved any relevant "dysfunctional family" issues, my advice would be to avoid this novel like the plague...
The chronic emotional, and sometimes physical, abuse to which two daughters are subjected by their disturbed, unstable mother is gut-wretchingly painful, at times disgusting, and, contrary to one of the book's publicity blurbs, not at all funny--if you have "been there, lived through that."
psychotherapist/survivor
A compelling portrait of our need for parental approval.......2005-09-03
I picked this up at the library last week because they didn't have anything I'd come looking for. There is a moment of excitement in picking out a book you have never heard of, like letting the waitress pick your order at an unfamiliar restaurant. I was not dissappointed with my choice! The mother in this book is deliciously antagonistic, in a way that will have your heart breaking for Lucy. It speaks to the human condition of longing for a parent's approval no matter the way one is actually treated. I did find myself at times floating above the story, not completely submersed in the action, as if the author witheld some vital bits of information that you would need to fill in some of the gaps. However, I enjoyed the voice of Lucy overall, and look forward to reading more of Nicole Stansbury's work.
Reminiscent of "White Oleander".......2005-08-25
Places To Look For A Mother is about a girl named Lucy and her relationship with her family, particularly her mother. The novel takes Lucy through about twelve years of her life and even more moves. The jacket might make Miriam Taylor appear almost glamourous, but she is FAR from that. In fact she is probably manic-depressive, definately a compulsive liar, hard to live with, impossible to sympathize with, and all around completely unstable and selfish.
The book was good but frustrating too, like watching someone stay in an abusive relationship. My only complaint is that the novel didn't really end and I felt like there was a lot of important things left out. But it was definately an experience, and I especially liked the "places to look for a mother" parts.
god save my enemies from such a mother!
Already anticipating the next book.......2003-11-01
"Places to Look for a Mother" might feel more like a memoir than a novel, but it's that rarest of memoirs driven by a sharply focused narrator who refuses to reduce her coming of age to nostalgia or melodrama. Lucy Taylor is a kid whose dream of a stable childhood is constantly undermined by her mother's inability to stick with a husband, a geographic locale, or even a self-identity. Mom's need to belong somewhere -- anywhere -- takes precedence, forcing Lucy to steer herself through turbulent adolescence. All the instability creates the same need for belonging in Lucy, leading to events that force her to rethink her mother, and motherhood itself. It sounds heavy, but Stansbury's skill as a writer (particularly with dialog) can make difficult subject matter a real pleasure to read.
