Book Description
The book challenges the orthodox argument that rural populations which abandoned self-sufficiency to become single commodity producers, and were supposedly very vulnerable to the commodity price collapse of the 1930s Depression, did not suffer as much as has been supposed. It shows how the effects of the depression were complicated, varying between regions, between different kinds of economic actors, and over time, and shows how the 'victims' of the depression were not passive, working imaginatively to mitigate their circumstances.

This is the first textbook survey of the pivotal position occupied by Southeast Asia in both the wider Asian and international economy. Professor Chris Dixon demonstrates how Southeast Asia's role has undergone frequent and profound change as a result of the successive emergence and dominance of mercantile, industrial and finance capital. He shows how the region has developed as a supplier of luxury products, such as spices; as a producer of bulk primary products; and how, since the 1960s, it has become a major recipient of investment and a favored location for labor-intensive manufacturing operations. The author examines how this progressive integration of South East Asia in the world economy has established the dominance of a small number of core areas and, in a concluding chapter, he explores the way in which the restructuring of the world economy in the 1980s has opened Southeast Asia to a new cycle of capitalist penetration.

The Archive of Yogyakarta is almost unique among Asian document collections, and one cannot overestimate its significance for scholarly research into the history of Java. It forms a single corpus of records produced by the Sultan of Yogyakarta's government between 1786 and 1812, dealing with the allocation of the realm's scarce resources of men and materials. There are royal appointments, registers of the realm's physical resources, retrenchment orders, lists of military contingents, and court correspondence - but these are vastly overshadowed by an incomparable set of local accountancy records, ranging from yearly balance sheets, through receipts of tolls, taxation lists, and debt letters, to allowances for the royal family and imposts for ceremonial feasts. Complementing Volume 1 (1980), which published selected documents of political importance, Volume II considers the Archive as a whole and what it reveals about the government and the economy of Yogyakarta. Transliterations of the Javanese originals are accompanied by English synopses and notes.

CRIMINAL EVIDENCE is a well written textbook that describes the many laws governing different types of evidence. Whether it be fingerprints, photographs or other documents, this book covers it all. It teaches you the laws of Search and Seizure and how the Exclusionary Rule (Fruits of the Poisonous Tree Doctrine/Derivative Evidence Rule) comes about when illegally obtained evidence is presented in court. This book also explains vehicle stops, arrest, and search warrant requirements.

The key to understanding..........2003-05-06
I'm writing this review because the low rating this study guide currently has stunned me. This book is an incredible resource. However, it is to be utilized if and only if the textbook, "Physics or Scientists and Engineers" is used as well.
The guide for each chapter of the textbook available in this study guide begins with an introduction discussing the general goals of the chapter. Then the major equations and concepts of the chapter are summarized. Some suggestions, skills, and strategies are then presented, and a review checklist is provided that lists the concepts you should be able to describe after studying the chapter.
After the guide for each chapter is the solutions manual for selected problems in the textbook. Each one of the solutions has in depth explanation and step-by-step conceptual and mathematical guidance that are very easy to understand. Many solutions are set up according to the "GOAL" problem solving steps: Gather information, Organize your approach, Analyze the problem, and Learn from your efforts (how to check your work). Every solution in the manual presents a different direction from which to view some concept of physics.
The set of two study guides (this and volume 1) greatly facilitate the comprehension of the text itself. They also provide quick, easy review for a test or exam the next morning that you haven't studied for. Highly recommended and deserving of all 5 stars.
