      Book Description

A comprehensive guide for beginners by the leading authority on options

Whether the markets are moving up or down, options remain one of the most attractive instruments for all investors. Profit with Options is a beginner's guide to trading options, delivered in clear and engaging manner by options guru Lawrence McMillan. Starting with a basic explanation of terminology, McMillan explains complete trading methodologies with chapters on direct and contrary indicators, protecting a stock portfolio, and trading volatility. The "Q&A" section in each chapter offers readers a chance to test their knowledge in real life trading situations. Whether you are looking for new investment sources in a bear market or seeking hedge protection in a bull, Profit with Options is a lively, one-stop reference and vital tool.

Lawrence C. McMillan is the President of McMillan Analysis Corporation. He publishes the newsletter The Option Strategist and the innovative fax service "Daily Volume Alerts," updating investors on unusual increases in equity option volume. He is the author of the bestselling Options as a Strategic Investment and McMillan on Options (Wiley: 0-471-11960-1).

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pricey, some good stuff.......2006-01-12

This book could probably be considered the Chevy in McMillan's fleet, with McMillan on Options and Options as a Strategic Investment standing as the Cadillac and Corvette, respectively. It's a worthwhile addition, but if you're new to McMillan, you'd probably be better-served by one of his more well-known works.

This is a relatively short book that provides some tools for using options as direct or contrary indicators, and actual strategies for employing options to profit off expected movement in price or volatility. The book also provides some good guidelines for evaluating indicators like the put/call ratio (index and equity-only), VIX (old VIX, now VXO), and how to interpret volume in an options chain for possible signs of predictive insider trading. Later chapters get a little more complicated, covering some strategies for volatility buying and selling, etc.

The "workbook" end of this volume is rather thin, basically comprised of 12-20 questions at the end of every chapter covering what you've learned, with an answer index in back.

If you're a McMillan fan or new to options, you'll probably like this book. Otherwise, check into his better-known volumes first.

2 out of 5 stars Unfair to be called trashy; but not too far..........2005-02-08

I am jsut wondering why many people take this book as another 'Bible' leveled book. It sounds exactly like an insult to all those real 'Bible' books.

Some other reviewers are right: the editting is lousy, the graphs are irresponsible,...., and some other over a thousand flaws. One can expect to learn more by simply browsing Optionetics forum.

2 out of 5 stars Not worth the price.......2005-01-26

I have read McMillan's other books and found them interesting and educational. But this book does not have any eyeopening material. If you are a beginner in options then this is not for you; if you are not a beginner then this book is not for you also. You probably know how volatility affects option prices etc., The author has just filled the pages with many historical charts of stocks. Instead he could have just illustrated his points with a couple of charts for each topic. Instead of a book this just deserves to be a booklet.

1 out of 5 stars Sloppy editing makes it difficult to learn from this book.......2003-11-28

Profit with Options seems to have been thrown together from a series of talks, with little attempt at editing. The book is replete with mistakes that render the book useless to a novice options trader and frustrating to read for an expert.

The figures are particularly bad, with incomplete or incorrect legends. On page 9, for example, are shown profit graphs for puts and calls. One problem is that the graph for calls is labeled "Put purchase" and the graph for puts refers to buying a call. This is worse than useless to a beginner because it is flat out wrong, and makes the expert wonder whether anything else in the book is sufficiently reliable to trust. Another problem with this figure is that neither graph has any numbers on the axes.

Poor labeling of figures renders indecipherable many of the figures in Chapter 2, which deals with options as direct indicators. Figure 2.1, for instance, does not provide dates on the X-axis, so when the text says something about what happened on July 29, it's difficult to know where to look on the chart. Many of the charts in this chapter include several data plots, apparently including price and option volume, but the plots are not labeled. Sometimes the text refers to put volume and call volume, but the charts don't indicate which is which.

The text often is no more clear than the figures. The discussion on stops on page 133, for example, states: "So you gave back a lot by waiting for your stop to be hit. Or did you Will, in this case you did, but what if the S&Ps had gone on to 1335?" Who the heck is Will, and what does he have to do with anything?

The "review" questions are not really review questions. I expected them to review subject matter that was covered in the preceding chapter. However, the questions are directed to material is not covered in the chapter.

I'm going to try a different book on options. It's just too frustrating to get anything useful out of this one.

      4 out of 5 stars Mostly Great.......2002-11-17

This is the fourth book on options that I have read.

I learned a lot from the 2 chapters on using options as indicators to spot insider trading activity and the chapter on volatility.

The chapter on using options as insurance will help me teach my family the bare minimum of what every stock investor should know about options.

The chapter on System Trading was useless to me.

One "feature" of this book that irritated me at first is that the "Review Questions" after each chapter quiz the reader on information that wasn't covered. However, I quickly got over this minor irritation because the answers are useful new information. The section is simply mis-labled. It should be called "Relevant Questions" or "Frequently Asked Questions".

At any rate, I used up an entire highlighter pen and that is good indicator that this book is worthwhile.

One other minor nit-pick; the copyright date is 2002 but the examples are from 1999 and 2000 (pre bubble-burst). There are also a few references to "the video" which leads me to belive that this book is a collection of previously written reports. That's fine because the chapters are self-contained but the editor should have deleted the reference to "the video".

Overall I give it 4 stars.

      Thank you to the author.

Market: Those interested in speech, especially speech production, and graduate students studying the anatomy and physiology of speech. Katherine Safford Harris is known throughout the speech research community for her contributions to our understanding of speech behaviors and her leadership at Haskins Laboratories. Her research has shown how the study of speech disorders can provide a window through which we can observe normal behaviors and learn much about the control systems of speech production. In recognition of this work, each section of this book contains chapters on normal speech production as well as speech disorders. These original contributed chapters cover a wide range of subjects, including respiratory patterns in normal speech, speech breathing processes in hearing-impaired persons, laryngeal adductory behaviors, spasmodic dysphonia, tongue shaping and vowel articulation, speech production in children with cochlear implants, and more.

                                  Best. Macro. Book. Ev-arrr!

Seriously. American food. Healthy. Delicious. Try cooking the succotash and yams and squash for *real* traditional Thanksgiving sides.

Every recipe I have tried in here is fantastic.

Except for the Zuni water balls. They stunk.

But don't let that stop you. This book rules. Easy to read, mostly easy to make, good for you, and delicious recipes you can add to your all-american repertoire! w00t!

                                    Book Description

Mark Silverman has seen light perform many wonders. From the marvel of seeing inside cloudy liquids as a result of his own cutting-edge research to reproducing and examining an unusual diffraction pattern first witnessed by Isaac Newton 300 years ago, he has studied aspects of light that have inspired and puzzled humans for hundreds of years. In this book, he draws on his many experiences as an optical and atomic physicist--and on his consummate skills as a teacher and writer about the mysteries of physics--to present a remarkable tour of the world of light. He explores theoretical, experimental, and historical themes, showing a keen eye for curious and neglected corners of the study of light and a fascination with the human side of scientific discovery.

In the course of the book, he covers such questions as how it is possible to achieve magnifications of a millionfold without a single lens or mirror. He asks what all living things have in common that might one day allow the development of a "life-form scanner" like the one in Star Trek. He considers whether more light can reflect from a surface than strikes it, and explores the origin of the strange hyperpolic diffraction pattern Newton originally produced with sunlight and knives. Silverman also discusses his new and ground-breaking experiments to see into murky substances such as fog or blood--a finding with potential applications as diverse as noninvasive medical testing and remote sensing of the environment. His wide-ranging reflections cover virtually all elements of physical optics, including propagation, reflection, refraction, diffraction, interference, polarization, and scattering.

Throughout, Silverman makes extensive reference to both modern research and the original works of giants such as Newton, Fresnel, and Maxwell. In a more personal section about physics and learning, Silverman argues for self-directed learning and discusses the central importance of stimulating scientific curiosity in students. Waves and Grains will encourage a spirit of wonder and inquiry in anyone with scientific interests.

5 out of 5 stars Essays in Optics.......2002-11-29

Mark P. Silverman's "Waves and Grains", in much the same manner as his treatment of quantum interference in "More Than One Mystery" written a few years earlier, is a series of discrete but interrelated essays on different aspects of optics. The treatment is semi-technical, with analyses of the math supporting the various experiments and their interpretations. Speaking as one with no math background at all and no formal training in physics, I still found this book fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable. Silverman is something of a polymath, with wide-ranging interests, and he succeeds in bringing together concepts from different fields of study in unexpected but very fruitful ways. He surely must be a wonderful classroom teacher; his enthusiasm for his subject matter is contagious, and to say that his use of language in his writing is masterful is an understatement. Formerly a journalist, he is always engaging, and never dry. Throughout, his descriptions are a model of clarity, and the precision of his vocabulary in the simplest nontechnical sentences is awe-inspiring in its elegance. This is not a textbook, but any serious student of physics who doesn't own a copy is missing out on an important book.

I got to the final three chapters of this book ("A Heretical Experiment in Teaching Physics", "Why Brazil Nuts Are on Top: Physics and the Art of Writing", and "What Does It Take...?") long after forming my impressions noted above, having first read Silverman's earlier "More Than One Mystery" with just the same amount of pleasure, and was gratified to find my reactions validated here. These chapters are entirely nontechnical discussions of the importance of an understanding of the physical world we inhabit, and better ways of imparting an enthusiasm for learning to students, which in themselves would make this book worthwhile for anyone sharing these interests.

Much of this same material is presented for a general readership in his 2002 "A Universe of Atoms, An Atom in the Universe", a revision of the now out-of-print "And Yet It Moves: Strange Systems and Subtle Questions in Physics".

5 out of 5 stars Another stop in the course of my Self Directed Education.......2001-03-10

I like this book a whole lot. It holds some kind of strange attraction for me although it is definitely too advanced and mathematically quantitative for me to completely understand. Yet, I *really* like it... Hmm. Why is that? This book is a friendly and curiously unique presentation of practical & theoretical aspects of light (electromagnetism). Included in the book are discussions of the great ideas and men who helped advance our understanding of light - for example the book gives some discussion on the contributions of Newton, Young, Fresnel, Huygens, & Maxwell. This isn’t just the “History of Science” stuff, it’s written in a captivating style to put our understanding in a cultural context. Throughout the book are justifiably qualitative (fairly quantitative) presentations on the technical aspects of Diffraction & Interference, Polarization, Reflection & Scattering, and a neat chapter titled ‘Playing with waves (subtitled the "Voice of the Dragon"!)’. Finally my favorite and inspiring section, Science & Learning ('Self-Directed Learning'). I hope you give this book a chance like I did because, for me, there is a sea of information out there and I'm keeping afloat by sailing around in a boat which I'm building while I'm traveling the literally wonderful journey of self directed enlightenment. Dr. Silverman has sent out some fascinating building materials for me to pick up and try to incorporate. The book has brought me to the shores of a wonderful land, rich with appreciation for the most prevalent stuff in our Universe - LIGHT! Now I must confess: I am borderline incompetent when it comes to mathematics - so this book (like so many I try to wrap my brain around) escapes my full grasp. But I believe that it doesn't hurt to try stretching my mind beyond it's current capabilities. If anything, it makes me more flexible. My experience with this book has left me provoked to explore electromagnetism much further!!!

                                                  Book Description

"I believe that it is in our interest as individuals to become crafty readers, and in the interest of the nation to educate citizens in the craft of reading. The craft, not the art. . . . This book is about that craft."--from the Introduction. This latest book from the well-known literary critic Robert Scholes presents his thoughtful exploration of the craft of reading. He deals with reading not as an art or performance given by a virtuoso reader, but as a craft that can be studied, taught, and learned. Those who master the craft of reading, Scholes contends, will justifiably take responsibility for the readings they produce and the texts they choose to read. Scholes begins with a critique of the New Critical way of reading ("bad for poets and poetry and really terrible for students and teachers of poetry"), using examples of poems by various writers, in particular Edna St. Vincent Millay. He concludes with a consideration of the strengths and weaknesses of the fundamentalist way of reading texts regarded as sacred. To explain and clarify the approach of the crafty reader, the author analyzes a wide-ranging selection of texts by figures at the margins of the literary and cultural canon, including Norman Rockwell, Anaïs Nin, Dashiell Hammett, and J. K. Rowling. Throughout his discussion Scholes emphasizes how concepts of genre affect the reading process and how they may work to exclude certain texts from the cultural canon and curriculum.

5 out of 5 stars Readable, Smart, Convincing.......2004-04-01

Scholes' prose is crisp and clear. His critique of the New Critics is hardly new, but it is efficiently done. Perhaps most interesting is the range of texts Scholes' approaches, from poetry to online posts by High School students to the Bible (read through Southern Baptists and the Pope, among others). He does a good job looking at Harry Potter and Edna St. Vincent Millay alike, and in both cases, he shows how satisfying reading can be when we strip away the demands of the New Critics and allow ourselves the luxury of a reading informed by an understanding of genre and history. One of the most useful things in this book for me was its neat description of the evolution of a genre (Scholes describes the renaissance, classical and baroque periods of genres like Fantasy and Mysteries).

As an English teacher, this book is something of a Bible for me. I refer to it often when I am trying to explain what and how I try to teach. That said, it is, admittedly, short on technique. It is not always (or even often) clear how to bring Scholes' ideas from the page to the classroom. To be fair, his intent was not to produce a manual, but still, as a teacher convinced by much of his argument, I often wish he had. In spite of his critique of "virtuoso readings", much of the joy of this book comes in appreciating Scholes' own considerable virtuosity as he takes on one underappreciated genre after another.

Scholes' readings are delightful and his language is refreshingly unpretentious. This is a fast read and well worth the effort for any interested reader and, especially, for any teacher of English.

                                                  3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-10-14

The title and jacket discription of this worthy book is highly misleading. While purporting to explain the "craft" of reading (although disclaiming to actually "teach" that craft), it is merely a string of essays on items that are of interest to the author: how the New Critics estranged readers of poetry, how detective fiction plays with certain rules, what is the definition of science fantasy. The actually "craft" of reading is often thrown into the essays as an afterthought, when the author recalls that this is what his book was supposed to be about. While the essays themselves are not without interest and are clearly written, it is dishonest to advertise one thing and deliver another: a literary bait-and-switch. So let the reader (and buyer) beware.
