4 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but well-written.......2002-04-10

I've read a lot of books on the Supreme Court, from Woodward's "The Brethren" to Lazarus' "Closed Chambers." Professor Simon's "The Center Holds" is a well-written entry that sheds little new insight into the court but provides a good introduction for the student of the Rehnquist Court.

In terms of structure, this book is a little different than others. Rather than proceed chronologically, Professor Simon organizes his discussion thematically. He covers employment discrimination, abortion, federal habeas corpus, and the First Amendment (flag burning, church and state separation) in different chapters. In some ways, this makes a lot of sense, because you get to see the development of controversy over a particular area of law, such as the Reagan administration's repeated efforts to overturn Roe v. Wade. These efforts included attempting to pack the Court with anti-Roe Justices such as Robert Bork (who was not confirmed), and ultimately culminated in Planned Parenthood v. Casey, a case that reaffirmed Roe's central holding (the constitutional right to abortion) but weakened its application.

Like most of what is written about the Supreme Court, there is a slight to moderate liberal tilt to "The Center Holds." What is written is accurate and probably does not paint an unfair picture of anyone, but you also get a clear sense of what Professor Simon thinks of the Court's rightward swing.

In summary, this is a good introduction to the Rehnquist Court, and in some ways, is a good companion piece to "The Brethren." Interestingly, both books end on the same tone: the "moderates" are in control of the Court.

3 out of 5 stars slanted, yet fascinating.......1998-06-16

Simon has managed to construct a book with a heavy liberal tilt that is both fascinating (insofar as it reveals the Court's recent inner-workings) and well written.

                    Book Description

Environmental pollution is one of the main problems to confront humanity, with the heavy metals occupying a leading role among the most pernicious pollutants. The metals cause cancer and other sicknesses. Their cytotoxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic potentials are not fully understood, and any thorough investigation demands the combined efforts of scientists drawn from many different disciplines. But the effects of heavy metals are not all negative: some, like cis-DDP, and some ruthenium and tin complexes, have antitumour activity.
The idea underlying the present work is therefore to present a multidisciplinary perspective on heavy metals in the environment, affording a better understanding of their action on human organisms and health, aiming to make them less polluting and more environmentally friendly.

                          Product Description

The authors review the key features of trace elements in soils, plants and the food web on which human beings survive. Currently, the quality of food is highlighted and has become a subject of broad studies of various disciplines. Minor inorganic constituents of food, trace elements, are of special interest due to their specific properties in both abiotic and biotic environmental compartments. Hence, there is a need for comprehensive information on the distribution of trace elements in given environmnetal compartments and organisms.

The authors' intention is to summarize up-to date interdisciplinary data for the concise presentation of our understanding of trace-element transfer in the chain from soil to man. Geochemical processes and information on international legislation on trace elements as both micronutrients and contaminants in soil and food are presented in parallel and are related to ecology and health risk assessments.

5 out of 5 stars A great paper on the subject of the unified field theory.......2000-09-07

Elizabeth Rauscher lays down a very clear, concise, and logical argument that goes the heart of modern electromagnetic field theory and its relationship to space-time, mass, and gravity. Her use of a 8-space (4-real,4-imag.) formalism makes the prediction that our space-time forms an intersection with a hyperspace (i.e.-our space does not have enough room to describe the forces of nature, as reflected in the modern research). The mathematical description of subluminal and superluminal signal propagation for the EM field (F_uv) in terms of its four-vector potential (A_u) is a mainstay throughout. I highly recommed this paper to any serious student of theoretical physics or professional. *warning to the layperson: you should be a physicist, grad student, or have a working knowledge of advanced math to get this document.

                            Book Description

Systems governed by non-linear differential equations are of fundamental importance in all branches of science, but our understanding of them is still extremely limited. In this book a particular system, describing the interaction of magnetic monopoles, is investigated in detail. The use of new geometrical methods produces a reasonably clear picture of the dynamics for slowly moving monopoles. This picture clarifies the important notion of solitons, which has attracted much attention in recent years. The soliton idea bridges the gap between the concepts of "fields" and "particles," and is here explored in a fully three-dimensional context. While the background and motivation for the work comes from physics, the presentation is mathematical. This book is interdisciplinary and addresses concerns of theoretical physicists interested in elementary particles or general relativity and mathematicians working in analysis or geometry. The interaction between geometry and physics through non-linear partial differential equations is now at a very exciting stage, and the book is a contribution to this activity.

                                  Book Description

This monograph addresses the field theoretical aspects of magnetic monopoles. Written for graduate students as well as researchers, the author demonstrates the interplay between mathematics and physics. He delves into details as necessary and develops many techniques that find applications in modern theoretical physics. This introduction to the basic ideas used for the description and construction of monopoles is also the first coherent presentation of the concept of magnetic monopoles. It arises in many different contexts in modern theoretical physics, from classical mechanics and electrodynamics to multidimensional branes. The book summarizes the present status of the theory and gives an extensive but carefully selected bibliography on the subject. The first part deals with the Dirac monopole, followed in part two by the monopole in non-abelian gauge theories. The third part is devoted to monopoles in supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories.

                                            Book Description

In this new edition of her bold debut novel, Linda Little has crafted a story where music, creativity, and sexuality merge, as a young Nova Scotian carver embarks on a profound discovery of his sense of self. Winner of the Cunard First Book Award and shortlisted for the amazon.ca/Books in Canada First Novel Award and Thomas Head Raddall Fiction Award, Strong Hollow tells the powerful story of Jackson Bigney, a young man coping with a crippling past of repression, alcoholism, and poverty. Failure seems built-in to Jackson's life. His father, a brutal man with a short fuse, despises his son, and Jackson's brothers thrive on drinking, violence and petty crime. Jackson finds solace only by carving tiny objects - acorns, field mice, bottle caps and leaves - as he has done since childhood. The day Jackson finds his father dead in a ditch beside the MacIntyre road is the day he begins his own metamorphosis. At nineteen, the seventh of nine children and the eldest still at home, Jackson seems predestined to follow in the fleckless footsteps of his father. He become silent and empty, unable to feel or to articulate emotion. Setting himself up as a bootlegger, Jackson builds a small cabin. He lives only in the present, expecting no more from life than work, alcohol and empty sex. One summer, Jackson meets Ian Sutherland, an accomplished fiddler and a powerful attraction develops between them. Twenty-nine and in love for the first time, Jackson feels alive with anticipation and fulfilment. Inevitably, at summer's end, Ian leaves and Jackson is shattered. Seeking to fill the void in this life, Jackson begins to restore a derelict fiddle. At a music shop in Halifax, he meets an accepting circle of friends. And as the fiddle takes shape, Jackson's perceptions of himself begin to change and he realizes that how the world sees you is how you come to see yourself.

I initially picked up this book because it was set in Nova Scotia, the province of my roots. What a surprise I had in how much I enjoyed the read, actually several times over.I felt the author did an exceptional job in portraying the angst felt by the main character. At times I felt there was some stereotyping of Maritimers but it did not take away from the story. The author's character development was realistic, as was her handling of sensitive subject matters. The sensitivity of the subject matter added to the interest and the intrigue of the story.I don't think you will be disappointed if you give this book a try. I read alot and it is now one of my all time favourites.
