Agglomeration, Growth, and Adjustment: A Theoretical and Empirical Study of Regional Labor Markets in Germany (Zew Economic Studies)

It is dealt with disparities in employment growth, unemployment, and wages between regional labor markets in Germany. First, endogenous formation and growth of industry locations due to agglomeration economies is established as a basic source of disparity in employment. Then, spatial frictions and local wage inflexibility due to central wage bargaining are detected as causes of unemployment disparities. Throughout the book theoretical analysis is combined with rigorous empirical testing using a large set of regional data at district level. In order to gain and robustify empirical results, recent methods in panel econometrics and spatial data analysis are employed. An overview on the extent of key regional labor market disparities in Germany is given. The book enables to assess our current understanding of the role of locational issues in causing those disparities, and thus to understand the basic justification of regional policy.

Don't waste your time!.......2006-01-01

If you really want to understand bill gross, this overly wordy substanceless book is the last place to go. Go to PIMCO's website and read through all of the past investment outlooks he has put out. This book promises something nuanced and wonderful and never delivers. Aside from some interesting biographical information about the man, there is nothing that will improve your mind in this book that you can't get out of a PIMCO prospectus. If you are a serious student of the market, you will be sorely disappointed.

Solid introduction to the bond world that morphs into Pimco prospectus.......2005-08-03

Bill Gross it the Peter Lynch of the bond world. The PIMCO money manager has consistently outperformed his benchmarks over the last 20 years. Middleton attempts to provide an bird's eye view of Gross's personal life and uses those perspectives to discuss how he makes money in the bond world. In summary, the answer is total returns, return from the yield on the coupon (think mortgage rate, interest) as well as the pricing on the issue.

The author starts down the path of constructing bond portfolios that span the risk and reward spectrum, but does not provide any perspectives. The book converts to a PIMCO prospectus in the middle of the book and could have been chopped at the editor's desk without losing any of main points and saving the paper in the world.

For those who really want to understand Bill's view on the world, he writes a wonderful thought piece every month that summarizes his views in a very practical and easily readable form. Well worthing reading.

In summary, worth reading if you are a bond neophyte and want to understand how people make money in the bond markets.

A Look Into the Life of One of Wall Street's Superstars.......2005-01-14

When you think of bond trading, what adjectives come to mind? Dull? Boring? Stagnant? All of the above? You're not alone. Stocks and, to a lesser degree, mutual funds tend to rule the roost as far as excitement is concerned in the world of investing. Your image of the dull bond market may change after reading this biography of the man who created the Pacific Investment Company, Bill Gross.

Bill Gross has become the most respected man in the bond market, probably the most famous bond trader to date. Not only will you get his philosophy on trading and the market, but you'll learn how he arrived where he is today. From a high school entrepreneur, a mechanical engineer, a writer of code for Lotus, a professional blackjack player, and a stint in the Navy -- it all makes for very fascinating reading.

After reading this, I have a new respect for the man and a new appreciation for the bond market. Fascinating insight on an investing superstar.......2004-04-27

Even after 17 years as a financial journalist, I knew precious little about Bill Gross, one of this country's richest men and greatest investors. Yes, I knew that Gross was the acknowledged king of the bond market, the Warren Buffet of the fixed-income set. But I had little appreciation for the scope or scale of his accomplishments or the methodology behind them. Thanks to this entertaining book from Timothy Middleton, a former colleague of mine at Dow Jones, I now consider my education more complete. "The Bond King" is fun reading, and, for the value-conscious, three books in one: a lively personality profile that benefits from Middleton's behind-the-scenes access to Gross over the course of nine months of research, a primer on the bond market, and a how-to manual for anyone interested in trying to mimic Gross's success. For good measure, the book also includes portraits of three legendary investors who influenced Gross's career: speculators Jessie Livermore and Bernard Baruch, and financier J. Pierpont Morgan. Hype & Fluff from MSNBC's Middleton.......2004-03-09

Gross is an excellent bond trader (and thats the key word, he actively trades, PIMCO trades) no doubt about it, but Middleton makes a read much like Bonners "Financial Reckoning Day" he just keeps repeating his mantra: Total Return.

In total honesty you could summarize this book in the following words: active buying and selling of bonds will give you "total return." What counts as total return is the coupon and the price you make from selling. There are no "secrets" as alleged on the slick paper wrapper and there is very little "Gross." Its all Middleton's fluff and it looks like he would do quite well in a prior era where people were paid by the word.

At a time when these goods are by no means universally recognized or embodied in laws of medicine, some basic philosophical understanding of them and of the foundations of medical ethics is urgently required. The purpose of this volume is to provide this largely neglected part of general and medical education.

This is a great book to really learn Physics.

As a previous reviewer has said, the standard is that expected on a Physics course for a 1st Year student at a UK University. However, it has the added utility in that, given the broad range of subjects covered, there will be plenty here both for second and third year students as well as for the interested reader in the sixth form.

Subjects covered include: Classical Dynamics, Gravitation, Special Relativity, Optics, Electromagnetism and circuits, and Thermodynamics. The author has also included problems on Dimensions and basic Statistics as applied to experimental Physics.

What I like best about this book is that you can "dip into it at will" and find something of interest. One worth keeping even after you are done with the exams to which it is geared.

Best problem book ever seen.......2001-08-20

A jolly marvellous gem of a book. This is about the standard of a first year university physics course in the UK, and apart from teaching you how to solve problems, it teaches you quite a lot of physics too. I learnt physics from this book, and didn't need another text book; and though I was going to keep with computer science, this inspired me to major in physics. Ignore the people who tell you that you need Resnick & Halliday. In real life, Rees is a lovely "gentleman scientist" and a profoundly clear thinker who really does supervise first year undergraduates one-on-one, so the answers have been field-tested and are tailored to his audience. This book can't be recommended too highly. You should avoid cheap imitations like the 2000 solved problems in physics book. Everything here is here for a reason, not to bulk it out. The only thing to bear in mind is that I haven't used it much since my first year. (Long time ago now :-( ) Books like this don't scale well. I think it's worth the investment, but check out your library.From experience, the questions have a way of coming up on the Cambridge Natural Sciences Tripos Part 1a Physics paper :-)

A truly enlightening review of all that is physics........1998-10-26

The role of a physicist as a problem-solver is probably among his most important roles. In fact, anyone having endured and possibly suffered through a college level physics curriculum must realize that success as a physicist depends crucially on the individual's ability to solve challenging yet practical problems on paper. It is to this end that I recommend a truly enlightening book by W.G. Rees titled Physics by Example: 200 Problems and Solutions. Covering all major areas of an undergraduate physics curriculum, with clear exposition and creative solutions to challenging problems, this book is bound to make its reader a problem-solver of the first rank. The problems have been selected to illuminate the most fundamental concepts in physics. The solutions are presented in a systematic and rigorous fashion that does not rely on intuition alone. The examples presented are typical of problems on final examinations for undergraduate courses. For those seriously pursuing the study of physics, this book serves beautifully to both solidify your understanding of physics and to test your preparation for exams.

The primary reference for stress & meter in English poetry.......2000-09-14

If you wish to understand poetic meter, this is the only source you need. He does devote a short final chapter to versification based on accent, syllable count, free verse and "classical" meters but the book as a whole focuses on metrical verse.

What makes this book a classic is its constant reference back to stress in normal speech - it suceeds in showing meterical verse as a natural outgrowth of what we do naturally. This dispels quickly any sense of the esoteric - poetry is of and for people in general not for a special literati.

After establishing meter in the normal sphere of speech, he then goes on to discuss how the abstract meterical patterns are actually applied and how variety is added to avoid the sing-song effect.

The only flaw in the book is that examples tend to be extracts rather than full poems, but that is appropriate for the intended use of the book "a short introduction" as claimed by its subtitle.

This is the only book on English versification you will ever need.
