Debates on the role of the state and the viability of Canadian economic development are especially intense during periods of change, such as the contemporary era of globalization. In this completely revised, updated, and enlarged second edition of The Political Economy of Canada Professors Howlett, Netherton, and Ramesh outline the principal structural elements of the Canadian political economy and describe the importance of such factors as resources, social class, and international trade. The authors stress the significance of political institutions at the national, international, and subnational levels that substantially affect the production and distribution of wealth. Three chapters consider the strengths and weaknesses of major approaches to Canada's political economy, the liberal and socialist theories as well as the staples approach pioneered by Harold Innis. Subsequent chapters explore the structure and organization of, and the interrelationships between, the state, labour, and capital in Canada, and show how their fragmented and decentralized nature limits the capacity of governments to 'manage' a globalized economy. The book outlines the history of the domestic political economy and examines how Canada is linked to the international political economy through the World Trade Organization and NAFTA. Particular attention is devoted to the constraints imposed on the Canadian state by a market-oriented, resource-exporting economy and by growing reliance on US trade. The final chapters examine monetary and fiscal management and industrial policy, demonstrating how these policy arenas are shaped by ideology, new globalizing and regionalizing constraints, and the (dis)organization of the major policy actors.

A British book that U.S. lawyers can use........2002-05-17

The book is for lawyers in Great Britain and Commonwealth nations like Australia and New Zealand. So the examples may strike U.S. lawyers as odd or old. But the principles are still valid, and the advice is still practical. The book explains how to draft in a clear, modern style. It provides before-and-after texts, examples of litigation-causing terms, and authoritative discussions of grammar, punctuation, and tone for the legal drafter.

It also has two things I haven't seen in other drafting books: (1) an informative discussion of the historical causes of bad legal drafting, and (2) a history of the plain English movement in England, Commonwealth nations, and the U.S.

Definitely worth reading.......2002-10-25

This book is very interesting. Dr.Arem, a hand surgeon, lets us enter his world of hands. The stories about the patients and how their hand problems were corrected were fascinating. The patients themselves were really colorful characters. Dr.Arem is an entertaining writer and intrigues his readers with the decisions that go into fixing various hand problems. In the second half of the book he gives us an informal history of the hand. I enjoyed reading about the possible reasons some people are born left handed or how palmistry evolved. I really enjoyed seeing the world through the eyes of a hand surgeon. It is a rare event when a physician shares his knowledge in a way that we can all understand and enjoy. I highly recommend this book. Don't miss it!

Early theorists believed that in science lay the promise of certainty. Built on a foundation of fact and constructed with objective and trustworthy tools, science produced knowledge. But science has also shown us that this knowledge will always be fundamentally incomplete and that a true understanding of the world is ultimately beyond our grasp.

In this thoughtful and compelling book, physicist F. David Peat examines the basic philosophic difference between the certainty that characterized the thinking of humankind through the nineteenth century and contrasts it with the startling fall of certainty in the twentieth. The nineteenth century was marked by a boundless optimism and confidence in the power of progress and technology. Science and philosophy were on firm ground. Newtonian physics showed that the universe was a gigantic clockwork mechanism that functioned according to rigid laws—that its course could be predicted with total confidence far into the future. Indeed, in 1900, the President of the Royal Society in Britain went so far as to proclaim that everything of importance had already been discovered by science.

But it was not long before the seeds of a scientific revolution began to take root. Quantum Theory and the General Theory of Relativity exploded the clockwork universe, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that our knowledge was, at best, incomplete—and would probably remain that way forever. There were places in the universe, such as black holes, from which no information at all could ever be obtained. Chaos Theory also demonstrated our inherent limits to knowing, predicting, and controlling the world around us and showed the way that chaos can often be found at the heart of natural and social systems.

What the book IS.......2006-09-15

To say that the Argentina of the Martin Fierro is "not very different as what it its today with unjustice and segregation" is a little bit short sighted. Things are completely different today. It is true that segregation might exist from a economical point of view, but no one sees gauchos as an inferior people nowadays.

Martin Fierro is an account of an era long time gone, but that it existed, an the book is interesting as a somewhat reliable historical account. If we want to see Hernandez as a sort of George Orwell, we are reading too much into it.

What Martin Fierro means today.......2001-11-02

Martin Fierro was written by Jose Hernandez in an era of gauchos and caudillos, not very different as what it its today with unjustice and segregation. Gives a plain message of values, courage and validates the ability of the people to survive under the worst conditions and succeed. A very actual approach at very current problems. The advise he gives to his kids could be the same we today give to our kids "sibbling be united , ..."
Agreat book, with a wonderfull content, some historic points of view and a nice look to lthe 1800 argentinean society from a gaucho's side .

A masterpiece in many different languages.......2000-05-12

Martin Fierro is a work of art. While describing in poetry the life of Martin Fierro (a Gaucho in the Pampas in the mid to late 1800's), this poem was also a political complaint and a message of unification against the modern world for the gauchos. Herandez's greatest achievement was to unite, in one poem, a message for all the social and cultural classes. Hernandez was a self made man, ruled by simple principles based on honesty and dignity. These principles are well reflected in his book. When Martin Fierro meets his sons, and counsels them, it is Hernandez speaking to all of us.

Martín Fierro is Argentina's image.......1998-09-06

Martín Fierro is, in some way, a national hero for Argentinian people, even for those who haven't read the book. And it seems pretty difficult to analyse this poem knowing that, because Fierro is basically a dirty, filthy, lazy and bane gaucho. Anyway, being Fierro for Argentinian people as Cid for Spanish or Achilles for Greek, the reader should know that this book defends a savage way of life with reasonable ideas, and that is what makes it unique. Martín Fierro belongs to a special time in Argentinian history, and because of this fact the reader should take over this book in a special way and try to understand it by entering the soul of the typical gaucho poetry. This book, written 120 years ago is still very very recommendable in this age of Grishams and Sheldons.

EXCELLENT BOOK.......1997-08-13

This is a great book which describes the situation of the gauchos in ARGENTINA (of course, long ago). I recomend the readers to check the wise tips given by "el viejo vizcacha", in one of the chapters. (They are great (and real)).

I bought this edition of the unforgettable classic by José Hernandez (meaning, the one by iUniverse, ISBN 1-58348-811-1) misled by the review below that recommends it as including both, the Spanish original and the English translation, and as being extensively annotated. That review must refer to a different edition, for this one only includes the Spanish text (both parts, Martín Fierro and La Vuelta de Martín Fierro) and is NOT annotated.

Listen, if yer at all like me, you've been looking for a BILINGUAL and reliable edition of this great work for some time. Well, I finally took a chance and got this one (SUNY Press, ISBN: 0873950267 ; ISBN-13: 9780873950268), AFTER buying the paperback also put out by State University of New York Press. First of all, this is a totally different translation (and I don't mean to say it's better or worse than the other one, just that they're not the same), it's not just the translation (it's a bilingual edition, with left pages in the original spanish, right pages in english), it's fully annotated (sometimes with the exact same explanations for certain words/passages for the english or the spanish reader, sometimes with particular explanations for just one versus the other, which leads me to believe the editors really gave some thought in their preparation of this volume), it's a beautiful, simple hardcover, it's illustrated (with extremely simple -- could be thought of as bad -- black and white reproductions of the classic Antonio Berni paintings), and it's COMPLETE AND UNABRIDGED (which is to say it has BOTH Martin Fierro and the Return of Martin Fierro, which is very difficult to find let alone imagine someone being so kind enough to do). SO STOP BEING WISHY-WASHY ABOUT IT. THIS IS THE EDITION TO OWN. IT'S EXCEEDINGLY {inexpensive} FOR WHAT IT IS. IT'S BEAUTIFUL. REALLY. p.s. the lack of a description is what threw me off it for a while, too. that's why i'm including all of this here. enjoy.

If you want to understand the life-style of the gauchos in Argentina by the begining of the century then this book is for you. Unfortunatly unless you read it in spanish you might lose 80% of it's value, since it is written in the gaucho's jargon.
