If you want to understand the 1990s, you have to understand venture capitalists. These are the people who listen to business pitches by the score, the financial-world equivalent of miners turning over tons of earth in search of precious metal. They're looking for the next Amazon.com, the next Yahoo!, the next eBay. Randall E. Stross, who teaches business history at San José State University, just happened to be there when a firm called Benchmark Capital discovered eBay. eBoys tells the story of how a group of not-quite-middle-aged men came to make an investment that returned a Silicon Valley record of 100,000 percent.

Stross is a gifted storyteller who weaves the personal histories of the Benchmark partners with stories of how the firm came to back such companies as Priceline.com and Webvan. We meet guys who weren't born to privilege, men who took unconventional routes into the venture capital business. Probably the most intriguing is Dave Beirne, a hyperaggressive executive recruiter who went into the business after realizing venture capitalists are the ones who really call the shots at high-tech start-ups. We also see the problems Silicon Valley guys have when they try to dot-com the bricks-and-mortar world. The short tale of an aborted partnership between Benchmark and Toys 'R' Us illustrates why the old economy is so mystified by the new.

Anyone interested in how business works should find something of interest in eBoys. From the organizational structure and corporate culture of Benchmark to the histories and personalities of its partners to its adventures in the world of Internet start-ups, it's a digital snapshot that reveals how successful businesses look, think, and mine gold in today's economy. --Lou Schuler

      Book Description

In eBOYS, Randall Stross takes us behind the scenes and inside the heads of the gutsy entrepreneurs who are financing the hottest businesses on the Web. The six tall men who started Benchmark, Silicon Valley's most exciting venture capital firm, put themselves at the cutting edge of the new economy by backing billion dollar start-ups like eBay and Webvan. The risks were enormous--but the rewards have proven to be staggering. Within two years, eBay's net worth grew from $20 million to more than $21 billion, while each Benchmark founding partner saw his own personal net worth soar by hundreds of millions of dollars.

For two roller-coaster years, Stross had total access not only to Benchmark's executives but to the companies they financed. He was a fly on the wall as fortunes were made in an instant, snap decisions got locked in, and new ventures took off--and sometimes crashed. Here are the testosterone-pumped conversations, round-the-clock meetings, and gutsy deals that launched the eBoys and their clients into the stratosphere of mega-wealth. Written like a novel but absolutely true, eBOYS brings to vivid life the glory days of the greatest business adventure of our time.

5 out of 5 stars a must-read for anyone in the startup world.......2006-10-08

As someone in the startup industry, hearing the VC point of view was very interesting. Add to that a refresher course on several of the important industry-shaping deals and an entertaining down-to-earth delivery style, and you got a certain winner on your hands.

Highly recommended, you will not put this down. I sure didn't.

4 out of 5 stars Hubris meets Homoeroticism.......2005-10-06

I give this book 4 stars for its inadvertently hysterical comedy. Everything you need to know to understand how the tech bubble formed and why it burst so dramatically is here--not in the story the author tells, but in the pseudo-macho, we-are-the-masters-of-the-universe, lets-measure-each-other's-penises subtext that runs throughout.

This is cultural history at its best. Not unlike the sex-ed books of the '50s and '60s that give us fascinating glimpses of the contemporary oppression of women, this book accidentally paints the late '90s silicon valley as the hotbed of homoeroticism that it was. The characters are greedy, hubris-filled, and completely blinded by the slightest scent of money--and the author worships their every move and utterance, seeing them as they see themselves: as gods among mere mortals.

There's not much here for the businessman, but plenty for the cultural historian.

4 out of 5 stars A good read with some good lessons.......2005-01-27

I doubt "eBoys" was intended to read as a period piece, but it certainly does in the post-technology bubble world. There are a couple things that come across loud and clear: first, these venture capitalists were not blind to the bubble that was forming; second, if they wanted to stay alive and relevant in their field, they needed to keep financing new companies and unwillingly participate in furthering the bubble.

The story is well-told and gives you an insider's view of how at least one venture capital firm makes the decision of who gets funding and who doesn't. It also serves as a cautionary tale about how even the most sophisticated investors get sucked into bubble mentality.

A valuable read for investors, entreprenuers, and aspiring venture capitalists.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing. Eboys + The Perfect Store = future billionaire........2005-01-18

I stand corrected on my earlier review of "The Perfect Store" -- Eboys has now usurped the title of "quite possibly the best book I've ever read." O.k. so I tend to exaggerate after I read a really great book, but this is definitely in my top 10 books of all time... and I'm a voracious reader (500+ easy... at age 28).

Informative, educational, entertaining, instructive, and incredibly motivating and inspiring -- for all those with an insatiable entrepreneurial spirit like the one I have, Eboys can be thought of as an entrepreneurial bible... or maybe hymnal would be more appropriate. I read the book and now I'm listening to the Audible audiobook... simply awesome... again! This is a must-have book for any budding Bill Gates, Micheal Dell, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, or PIERRE OMIDYAR out there. Heck I even sent Benchmark the executive summary for my business even though they don't invest in my industry... I was just that impressed with those guys.

Read it. Save it. Refer to it. You'll be glad you did.

4 out of 5 stars not profound, but not prosaic either.......2004-10-01

Broad overview of the netherworld of venture capitalists as well as short take on eBay, the unlikely "profitable" internet company that learned how to scale its technology and augment its customer base with the help of Benchmark. As other reviews will corroboarte, it's this book's ebullient writing that salvages it from a more tepid rating.

        Book Description

In the early 1990s, when organizations representing the 2.6 million U.S. nationals living abroad appealed to Congress for their own non-voting representative, the response of one Senator was to dismiss these "moans of the mink-swathed Americans abroad." However, the image of a life of luxury abroad is usually a harsher reality complicated by income taxes, military duty, and legal jurisdiction. What exactly is the obligation of a state toward citizens who live outside its borders?

Bargaining with the State from Afar traces the relationship between the United States federal government and sojourning Americans living in the colonial enclaves of pre-World War II China. This group of Americans was not subject to Chinese law, but rather to an amalgam of laws borrowed from the District of Columbia and other territorial codes, as well as to local ordinances enacted by foreigners themselves. Scully explores U.S. government efforts to police this anomalous zone in the American policy and places the struggle between federal officials and sojourning U.S. nationals in the larger context of changing international law and modern citizenship regimes.

She argues that the American experience with extraterritorial justice in China offers an important new vantage point from which to examine a singular area in the history of modern states. This case study of U.S. consular jurisdiction reveals the legal, political, and cultural process through which modern states have struggled to govern citizens outside their borders. Scully's examination of the U. S. Court for China is one of the first serious analysis of this anomalous institution.

5 out of 5 stars New approach to the history of U.S. foreign relations.......2001-10-01

Today, it is rare to find an academic work that attempts to fit into more than one narrow field. The book by Scully (a classmate of mine years ago) is valuable to those interested gender studies, US-East Asian relations, and more traditional diplomatic history. She examines how Americans living in China's treaty ports, including prostitutes, merchants, and criminals, sought to take advantage of their citizenship and the privileges it offered under the unequal treaties. In fact, the actions of some Americans in China so worried the diplomatic establishment that officials attempted to "rein in" their own citizens, or even remove them from China. Overall, this is book proves that U.S. diplomatic history means more than the actions of Secretaries of State and ambassadors.

          -- Choice

Schoppa offers a detailed critical examination of the outcome of recent U.S.-Japan trade talks, focusing on the Bush administration's Structural Impediments Initiative and the more recent Clinton Framework talks. He provides a comprehensive account of the political climate on both sides of the Pacific, drawing lessons about which tactics are most likely to work best for the U.S. Before new policies are established, we must understand why neither administration was able to compel Japan to end anti-competitive practices that inhibit the access of U.S. firms to Japanese consumers.

                      Book Description

When major league baseball cancelled its 1994 season following a player strike, fans were shocked that the national pastime could be brought to a standstill by a collective bargaining dispute. The strike was largely responsible for bringing the economics of the game into sports discussions and raising questions about the business of baseball. Will players' rising salaries destroy baseball? How will revenue-sharing and luxury taxes affect competitive balance? Should taxpayers subsidize their local team? This volume answers the basic questions about the economics of the sport, from salary arbitration to baseball's antitrust exemption, in a clear style geared for readers with no formal background in economics.

Stee-rike Four sets new standards in the economics of sports. Everyone should buy this book, and I do mean, EVERYONE. Marburger's playful prose makes for a true joy in reading; I simply couldn't put it down. I've read hundreds of economics books over the years, from Adam Smith to John Maynard Keynes to Milton Friedman, and I can say without hesitation that Marburger's insights are worthy of the Nobel Prize in economics.

5 out of 5 stars Best available layman's guide to baseball economics.......2000-05-17

In the wake of the 1994-95 labor dispute, a number of economists prepared this informative layman's guide to the issues which have come to dominate the Hot Stove League over the past quarter century. Bob Costas, among others, could learn a lot here.

For the frustrated fan who wonders why every round of labor negotiations ends up threatening the season, Dan Marburger explains that neither side has a reason to modify its negotiating position unless it believes the other will soon inflict harm through a strike or lockout. James Richard Hill points out that "skyrocketing" salaries actually demonstrate MLB's overall economic health, while John L. Fizel shows that free agency has had little or no effect on competitive balance. Sometimes the authors disagree: James Whitney endorses greater revenue sharing, while Lawrence Hadley and Elizabeth Gustafson say that small-market owners are unlikely to spend the added money on veteran players. Rodney Fort and Andrew Zimbalist discuss a consequence of baseball's antitrust exemption: the owners' ability to leverage their control over the number and location of franchises to extract enormous public subsidies for new stadia.

As the first layman's guide to baseball economics written after the 1994-95 cataclysm, Stee-rike Four! deserves a larger audience than this expensive, hard-to-find hardcover edition received. An updated paperback would be most welcome.

4 out of 5 stars Provides excellent viewpoints on the economics of baseball........1998-07-15

This book eliminates the emotionality of the high priced players, and gets down to the basic economics of the game. It discussess all the issues that are relavant in today's game, such as revenue sharing, salary caps & collective bargaining.

                          Book Description

Because elementary mathematics is vital to be able to properly design biological experiments and interpret their results. As a student of the life sciences you will only make your life harder by ignoring mathematics entirely. Equally, you do not want to spend your time struggling with complex mathematics that you will never use. This book is the perfect answer to your problems. Inside, it explains the necessary mathematics in easy-to-follow steps, introducing the basics and showing you how to apply these to biological situations. Easy Mathematics for Biologists covers the basic mathematical ideas of fractions, decimals and percentages, through ratio and proportion, exponents and logarithms, to straight line graphs, graphs that are not straight lines, and their transformation. Direct application of each of these leads to a clear understanding of biological calculations such as those involving concentrations and dilutions, changing units, pH, and linear and non-linear rates of reaction. Each chapter contains worked examples, and is followed by numerous problems, both pure and applied, that can be worked through in your own time. Answers to these can be found at the back.

Well written guide to the basics such as concentrations, dilutions, logs etc. with lots of useful worked examples. The only problem is the book is a bit too basic for all mathematic needs during a biological degree.

I've been looking around for a good introduction to bioinformatics software for some months now. I have only read 37 pages, but that was worth the purchase price and I am enthusiastic about reading on. Hall does a very nice job of explaining the uses of Blast and ClustalX, differentiating among the various versions and showing how protein analysis differs from DNA analysis. (His focus is proteins.) He takes you step by step through an analysis and explains the information available on the screen at each step. He tells you how to manage the resulting input and results files, and he even explains choices of penalties for gaps. All very clear.

4 out of 5 stars Step-by-step instruction with downloadable input data files.......2004-01-21

What I liked about this slim book is that, as in Chapter 1, it first provides you with data files with which you can build phylogenetic trees, then guides you through step by step. Also, I liked its concise overview about phylogenetics.

However, Chapter 2 does not come with such data files. It only provides you with templates. Why?

                          Also what you should be aware before ordering this book is that the explanations on this book assume that you;
                          (1) have a copy of PAUP (which is not a free software), and;
                          (2) are running PAUP on Mac OS.

So, if you are running PAUP on Windows/UNIX and do not have any access to Mac, you probably don't want to buy this book. PAUP manual should better serve you.

4 out of 5 stars MrBayes and Paup* manual.......2003-09-28

I picked up this book because I was trying to learn MrBayes on my own with little success. With new versions of MrBayes, this book is already out of date and I encountered some frustration with my Nexus code being wrong, but between the help function, a lot of trial and error, and Hall's book I managed to successfully analyze my data using Bayesian analysis! I highly recommend it for the "cookbook" appeal-- software like PAUP and MrBayes can be difficult to learn on your own, and it's nice to have someone explain it step by step. I would have liked some instruction on saturation curves, but the book is fairly complete otherwise. MacClade is not mentioned, probably because it is more user-friendly than the programs included. PTME has been criticized for some incorrect statements in the book regarding theory, but I would expect students to use this book for practice more than theory. Overall, a great little manual to have on the shelf.

                            Book Description

This book is a comprehensive review of the theories, techniques and applications of reflection electron microscopy (REM), reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and reflection electron energy-loss spectroscopy (REELS). The book is divided into three parts: diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy. The text is written to combine basic techniques with special applications, theories with experiments, and the basic physics with materials science, so that a full picture of RHEED and REM emerges. An entirely self-contained study, the book contains much invaluable reference material, including FORTRAN source codes for calculating crystal structures data and electron energy-loss spectra in different scattering geometries. This and many other features makes the book an important and timely addition to the materials science literature for researchers and graduate students in physics and materials science.

4 out of 5 stars From: Analysis, 1997.......2000-09-04

The book describes the analytical techniques based on electron diffraction, reflection and imaging in the TEM (and STEM) for the analysis of materials surfaces. As with most texts dealing with analytical techniques these days it is awash with acronyms and the ones representing the candidate methodologies are frequently encountered. These are RHEED (reflection high energy electron diffraction), REM (reflection electron microscopy), SREM (scanning REM) and REELS (reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy). Many others are included, but the author is considerate enough to define them all in the early pages of his book. The dust-cover notes state that this is 'an entirely self-contained study' in which the 'theories, techniques and applications of REM, RHEED and REELS are comprehensively reviewed'. Inspection of the text reveals that this is, indeed, the case, with three parts (logically Part A, Part B and Part C) of approximately equal length covering the three areas of reflection electron studies. This is preceded by a comprehensive review of the kinematical theory of electron diffraction. This chapter is a very helpful (and necessary) prelude to the rest of the book. It deals with kinematical scattering in the usual numerical manner but the associated text makes this chapter extremely readable. The main body of the text is written in an equally attractive style with the theory of the various topics being introduced alongside the experimental procedures involved. There are many applications of reflection electron microscopy and spectroscopy scattered throughout the book; although inmost cases they serve as illustrations of particular facets of the experimental procedures rather than points which emphasize the relative strengths of the candidate techniques. This is, however, a minor criticism, and the inclusion of examples of real micrographs, diffraction patterns and spectra throughout the text may provide some readers with much needed relief from the undoubted rigour of the theoretical treatments provided.

For those with a TEM background it represents, perhaps, the definitive text for reflection methods.

There are two particularly attractive aspects of this book to be found in the closing pages. The first is an extensive set (ten) of appendices which contain much useful data along with five FORTRAM programs for interpreting spectra and modeling electron beam/specimen interaction. These have presumably been widely tested in the author's laboratory and their inclusion here is to be welcomed. The other feature, warmly welcomed by this reviewer, is the inclusion of a separate index of the materials used to illustrate the various facets of the reflection techniques. Also included as an Appendix is a chronological bibliography of REM, SREM and REELS covering the years 1975-1995. RHEED is presumably excluded as it is the most senior, and widely used, of the methods considered. This book is not one for those with a peripheral interest in RHEED, REM, SREM and REELS. Referring once again to the cover notes it is offered as an 'ideal guide for scientists and graduate students working on quantitative surface structure characterization using reflection electron techniques' and there is no doubt that this target audience will appreciate the publication of such a concise, authoritative and well written text in their chosen area of endeavor. For those with a TEM background it represents, perhaps, the definitive text for reflection methods and provides all the theoretical information necessary for a thorough appreciation of these techniques. At such a reasonable price for a very specialist text one would hope that it will soon find a place on the bookshelf of every electron microscopy unit with a practical need (or even aspirations) to carry out surface structure determination in the TEM or STEM. For those with a need for such a text this book fulfills all the claims made on its behalf. Dr. Wang is to be congratulated on writing a very accessible text. The book is thoroughly recommended.

"It contains a lot of illustrations and excellent images and a good balance of theory and experimental techniques... it is a book that any materials science or physics libraries should be holding"

"A chief event of life is that day on which we have encountered a mind that startled us." A Year with Emerson is a feast of 365 such days, designed to celebrate the bicentenary of the "Sage of Concord." Known throughout the world for his cogent, epigrammatic writing, admired as the "George Washington of American Literature," his work is even more piquant and enriching in bigger doses. In this delightful display of his genius, the daily almanac entries take us to the heart of his ideas and philosophy. Some were written on the very day in which they appear in the book, some are speculations and musings of the season and the natural world, but all are unfailingly wise, still relevant to our modern times.

As a philosopher, essayist, poet, and lecturer, Emerson's mind ranged across the universe even as he traveled the length and breadth of the United States and Europe. With him as a companion and guide, we meet the ideas and personalities he championed and encountered, from Lincoln to John Muir, from Carlyle to Montaigne, and, of course, Emerson's own close New England circle of Hawthorne, Thoreau, Margaret Fuller, and the Alcotts. With company like this and the scope of Emerson's vision, we can read the entries as a daily inspiration and tonic, or simply enjoy this extended daybook as a revelation of a visionary, incorruptible, and surprisingly modern mind.
