Book Description

Capitalism Russian-Style provides a progress report on one of the most important economic experiments going on in the world today: the building of capitalism in Russia. It describes Russian achievements in building private banks, companies, stock exchanges, new laws and law courts. It analyzes the role of the mafia, the new financial empires, entrepreneurs, business tycoons, and the shrinking Russian state. Thane Gustafson tells how the Soviet system was dismantled and the new market society was born, and examines the prospects for a Russian economic miracle in the twenty-first century.

Download Description

For a decade Russia has been dismantling communism and building capitalism. Describing a deeply flawed fledgling market economy, Capitalism Russian-Style provides a progress report on one of the most important economic experiments going on in the world today. It describes Russian achievements in building private banks and companies, stock exchanges, new laws and law courts. It analyzes the role of the mafia, the rise of new financial empires, entrepreneurs and business tycoons, and the shrinking Russian state. Thane Gustafson tells how the Soviet system was dismantled and the new market society was born. He argues that this new society is changing constantly, so that any assessment of success and failure would be premature. Identifying investment as vital to preserving Russia's status as a major industrial power, in his final chapter he examines the prospects for an economic miracle in Russia in the twenty-first century.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-02-21

Thane Gustafson presents an overview of Russia's experiment with capitalism to date. In this well-documented, well-reasoned report, he describes the breakdown in the Soviet economy. This collapse was already in the works when Gorbachev's efforts to reform the system brought it tumbling down. Gustafson weaves his account together like a journalist, as he discusses the heady rush of capitalism, entrepreneurism, political corruption and crime that moved into Russia's economic vacuum like a modern gold rush. He carefully traces recent developments in Russia's attempt to recover from its 1998 financial disaster.

As the book describes, no one knows what will happen in Russia. Gustafson emphasizes that Russia cannot return to its command economy. The book offers cautious optimism for future business with Russia. However, the admitted uncertainty of Russia's future may frustrate readers who seek definitive answers. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book to readers interested in social and political developments and to academics as well as to executives of companies with economic interests in Russia, or those who may want to do future business there, although - for now - it may be a particularly risky venue.

    Book Description

In More Than Victims, Donald Downs offers a sympathetic and powerful analysis of the problems attending the use of battered-woman syndrome as a legal defense, ultimately revealing how the syndrome's logic actually harms those it is trying to protect. A persuasive account of how constitutional freedom and individual justice can be threatened by current legal standards, this thorough yet accessible work presents a dramatic rethinking of the criminal justice system.

"More Than Victims is a powerful step in the right direction. Women as well as men need to be protected from violence, and women, in particular, require better understanding of their sometimes oppressive situations. But they also need to be able to participate fully in the discourse of politics and citizenship. Downs offers a solution that helps to make both possible."—Teresa Godwin Phelps, Review of Politics

"Downs has written an important book on a subject that deserves more of our attention."— Susan Mezey, Law and Politics Book Review

"Comprehensive and compelling. [Downs] demonstrates a masterful grasp of the complex legal and philosophical issues implicated in domestic violence cases."—Annette DeMichele, New York Law Journal

                      Description:
Lindane (@c-hexachlorocyclohexane) is used as an insecticide in many countries. Concentrations of lindane have been found in air, water, soil, snow and tissue samples throughout the world, including the Great Lakes, and concerns have been raised for its potential effects on human and ecosystem health. In Canada, lindane was, until 2003, principally used as a treatment on canola seed, a crop grown mostly on the Canadian prairies. Approximately 455.3 and 510.4t of lindane were applied in May of 1997 and 1998 respectively. An estimated 12-30% of this lindane volatilised within the first 6 weeks after planting, resulting in an atmospheric loading of from 66.4 to 188.8t. Five-day forward air trajectories (movement) were calculated from three locations on the Canadian prairies, for the 6-week period following sowing of canola seed, to estimate if such movements might contribute to the seasonal increases of @c-HCH in five Canadian target locations. These target locations were: Point Petrie on Lake Ontario (eastern Great Lakes region); the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains of southern Canada; the low Canadian Arctic between latitudes 60^o and 70^oN; the central Arctic between latitudes 70^o and 80^oN; and, Eureka in the high Arctic, north of latitude 80^oN. The percent of air mass trajectories moving from the prairies to these target areas was: Point Petrie 20%; Rocky Mountains 27%; low Arctic 30%; high Arctic 6%; Eureka 0%. It is possible, then, that volatilisation of @c-HCH from Canadian prairie canola crops contributed to the atmospheric loading in these remote regions.

                        Description:
The behaviour of the organochlorine pesticide hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) is investigated. The concentrations of @a-, @b-, @c-, and @d-HCH isomers were measured in soils, rhizosphere and vegetation in a contaminated area in Galicia (NW Spain). The total concentration of HCH in soils reached values close to 20@?000mgkg^-^1. The plants analysed (Avena sativa L., Chenopodium spp., Solanum nigrum L., Cytisus striatus (Hill) Roth, and Vicia sativa L.) accumulated HCH, especially the @b-HCH isomer, in their tissues. The most likely mechanisms of HCH accumulation in plants were sorption of soil HCH on roots and sorption of volatilized HCH on aerial plant tissues. The concentrations of HCH obtained from the bulk and rhizosphere soils of selected plant species suggest that roots tend to reduce levels of the HCH isomers in the rhizosphere. The results reflect the importance of vegetation in the distribution of organochlorine compounds in the soil-plant system.

                          Description:
A new approach for the removal of the pesticide lindane (@c-hexachlorocyclohexane or @c-HCH) makes use of catalytic reduction of HCH to benzene over a metal catalyst, namely Pd(0). Since specific surface area plays an important role in reactivity of catalysts, this study investigated the use of bioPd(0), i.e. nano-scale Pd(0) particles precipitated on the biomass of Shewanella oneidensis, for the removal of lindane. It was demonstrated that bioPd(0) has catalytic activity towards dechlorination of @c-HCH, with the addition of formate as electron donor, and that dechlorination with bioPd(0) was more efficient than with commercial powdered Pd(0). The biodegradable compound benzene was formed as reaction product and other HCH isomers could also be dechlorinated. Subsequently bioPd(0) was implemented in a membrane reactor technology for the treatment of @c-HCH polluted water. In a fed-batch process configuration with formate as electron donor, a removal percentage of 98% of @c-HCH saturated water (10mgl^-^1) was achieved within 24h. The measured chloride mass balance approached the theoretical value. The results of this work showed that a complete, efficient and fast removal of lindane was achieved by biocatalysis with bioPd(0).

                            Description:
The degradation of lindane was studied in liquid-agitated cultures using a commercial strain of the fungus Pleurotus ostreatus as the biodegrading organism. The biodegradation was accomplished with the action of extracellular oxidative enzymes, produced by the fungus to decompose woody substrates. Enzyme activities of manganese peroxidase and laccase were measured in a liquid mineral medium. An orthogonal Central Composite Design of experiments was used to construct second-order response surfaces with the fungus growth, final pH and the lindane biodegradation as optimization parameters. The initial lindane concentration, the nitrogen content, the incubation time and the temperature were used as design factors. Optimal conditions found for all these parameters will be used for the continuation of this project aiming at the bioremediation of contaminated sites with persistent organic pollutants such as lindane.

                              Description:
Biodegradability of technical grade hexachlorocyclohexane (tech-HCH) was studied in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) under continuous mode of operation in concentration range of 100-200mg/l and constant HRT of 48h. At steady state operation more than 85% removal of tech-HCH (upto 175mg/l concentration) and complete disappearance of @b-HCH was observed. Kinetic constants in terms of maximum specific tech-HCH utilization rate (k) and half saturation velocity constant (K"L) were found to be 11.88mg/g/day and 8.11mg/g/day, respectively. The tech-HCH degrading seed preparation, UASB reactor startup and degradation in continuous mode of operation of the reactor is presented in this paper.
