    Book Description

    Child Labor is NOT Cheap is a three-lesson unit is inspired by 250 million children who spend most of their days on the job, including hundreds of thousands of child workers in our hemisphere who produce goods for the U.S. market in assembly plants, called maquiladoras. In developing the curriculum, we are responding to requests from educators and students for substantive materials to address this crucial situation.

    Child Labor is NOT Cheap was created by the same group who produced Many Faces of Mexico and the video, Central American Children Speak. The new 40-page publication contains 27 pages of reproducible handouts, a bibliography with print, video and worldwide web listings, and clear instructions for using the innovative lessons. It is designed for grades 8-12 and adult study groups.

    The first lesson is based on the stunning National Labor Committee video Zoned for Slavery and original articles, arranged to be duplicated for handouts. Lesson two examines the conflict between social responsibility and "the bottom line" through a role-play exercise based on a case study of a U.S. athletic-wear firm with a plant in the Dominican Republic. The third lesson explores actions that have been taken to forge new policies and practices, and then encourages students to develop an action plan.

    Book Description

    Worldwide banks are keen to find ways of effectively measuring and managing operational risk , yet many find themselves poorly equipped to do this. Operational risk includes concerns about such issues as transaction processing errors, liability situations, and back-office failure. Measuring and Modelling Operational Risk focuses on the measuring and modelling techniques banks and investment companies need to quantify operational risk and provides practical, sensible solutions for doing so.

    1 out of 5 stars The most annoying "math" book ever.......2005-03-20

    Before I read this book, I had heard it was the bible for operation risk and is great as an introductory book for finance. After I read 1/3 of the book, I figured this book is actually for people who failed their second year statistics courses and still have no idea what raw and central moments are. As a grad student in Actuarial Science in one of the best schools in the world, I strongly discourage people from buying this book. Technically, this book has so many mistakes that it would not be qualified as a textbook in any schools in the world. The author introduces a lot of statistical tests without even defining the notations, which makes the tests useless.

    2 out of 5 stars See if you can find all the mistakes.......2005-02-28

    I only got to page 100 so far, but there seems to be a bug on very other page. It's more like a test for the reader "see if you can find all the mistakes". I'm rather disappointed. If this book is aiming to become a "statistical bible" of the operational risk industry, the formulas, graphs, examples etc need revision.

    5 out of 5 stars The Bible for Operational Risk.......2003-01-17

    This is by far the best book in the area. It brings in details all the current technical discussions allowing even the reader with minimal math background to understand and even try the techniques stated in the book. Every risk manager must have it at least as a reference. The author carefully describes several techniques as:
    1) Loss distribution approaches;
    2) Scorecard approach;
    3) Extreme value theory;
    4) OpRisk management models;
    5) Modeling and developing hedging programs.

    Excellent value for the money!

    1 out of 5 stars Only for quants.......2003-01-03

    The book is for those with a Phd or strong math background - the writer does not attempt to cater to anyone else. Don't bother trying to understand the models discussed if you don't have this knowledge - get your Phd first! A waste of money unless you know mathematical concepts such as MLE, Fast Fourier etc.

    5 out of 5 stars Best book in the area by far. Superb ideas in oprisk mgt!.......2002-07-10

    This is the best book in operational risk by far. It shows, on a very clear way, how to implement complex algorithms that can be used in the measurement and management of oprisk. The most interesting part of the book is the one on oprisk management and oprisk stress tests and scenario analysis. Superb! Every risk manager should have it at least as a reference.

            Book Description

            Legal history is not merely a history of particular events but also a history of traditions, intellectual and institutional. The Common Law Tradition is about the learned traditions which have shaped the common law and the English legal mind over the centuries: the profession, its structure, its technical language and its literature. J.H. Baker also looks at central institutions, such as the inns of court and chancery, and at local courts, which operated on the fringes of the common law, early conveyancing courses, the origins of law reporting and the first identifiable English year-book reporter. There is an account of the short-lived practice of reporting criminal cases at Newgate in the early fourteenth century and a suggestion that the spread of law reporting on the continent of Europe was begun by Englishmen serving in the fourteenth-century curia at Avignon.

              Book Description

              Animal communication expert Jim Nollman has sung with orcas, plucked a Jew's harp in waters teeming with humpback whales, and shaken rattles in the company of bottlenose dolphins. Now, in this heartfelt and quirky true adventure story, Nollman and two artist friends set out for Canada's vast Mackenzie Delta, electric guitar and underwater sound equipment in tow, to make music with belugas--the elusive white whales of the Arctic.
              Traveling the expanses of this beautiful northern land, the three friends unwittingly find themselves at the center of a heated controversy over the Beaufort Sea belugas: Why have the whales stopped coming into the Mackenzie Delta, possibly jeopardizing their own calves, who live the first part of their lives in these shallow, warm waters? As they attempt to unravel the mystery, they encounter various intriguing characters now laying claim to the resources of the Mackenzie Delta region--Native people (who are allowed to hunt the whales), wildlife officials, and oil company engineers--all vividly described by Nollman. Along the way, he also conveys both the wonders and the realities of being deep in the wilderness--experiencing the connectedness of all living things while scratching the bites of the world's most fearsome mosquitos.
              With its rich and passionate nature writing evoking lovely and remote landscapes, The Beluga Café suggests profound metaphors for our time about animal rights and animal intelligence, the role of science in conservation, the politics of extinction, and the place of art in the epic struggle to save the natural world.

              5 out of 5 stars Who are we to say.......2005-07-06

              This is a very powerful book. It is not the typical wilderness adventure book. Unlike the TV nature show, amazing things don't happen every few mintutes. In fact few amazing things happen at all, yet the whole experience of small wilderness experiences add up to a book that will take you to another place.

              "It seems critical to me to devote some part of each year to this nothingness, this time without time, this confrontation with animal demons real and imagined, learning once again how to surrender to some internal environment made external."

              Nollman confronts the question of us versus them strongly in this book with the us being modern society and them being animals, nature and native cultures. He feels the chance has been lost to learn from "them" in a way that everyone would benefit, instead of disregarding that knowledge and destroying it.

              Chapter 15 begins with a wonderful quote by Carl Safina from Song for the Blue Ocean. "Ecosystems are now like history books with many of the pages ripped out. And when people come along there is no way for them to know what was on those torn-out pages. Their values are not constructed around the abundance that once filled those holes. They accept the blank parts as though they've always been there."

              Nollman pulls no punches in what he experiences on this trip including describing the constant difficult and loving give and take among the three soujourners.

              This is a strong book and well worth the time to read it.

              5 out of 5 stars a wonderful story.......2005-03-30

              This is a quite wonderful story.... a music of words.... ebbing and flowing between near-surreal and ultra-surreal with only a few intrusions of pure didactic rationalism. Buy it and read it.

                3 out of 5 stars Good Labs, but Expensive Equipment.......2003-08-02

                The text that this lab manual comes from is my favorite Physics text of any I have seen. The lab manual follows this excellence.

                It is clear, easy to follow, and is not a "cookbook". It requires the student to think about what data will be collected and how to record it, and then guides the student in interpretation of the labs.

                The bad part is the expense. The later half of this book requires some very expensive equipment. My school cannot afford this equipment. I am in favor of doing labs, even with quantum mechanics and the more advanced topics, but I think that sometimes the authors of these books need to look at reality.

                A few wealthy city schools may be able to afford this equipment, but that is all. Rural or less wealthy schools, like mine, will never be able to afford this equipment. I can write my own labs for those sections using "cheaper" equipment, but I also have a Physics degree. Those who lack my training or experience will be more likely to pick a different text.

                5 out of 5 stars This is a Physics Book!!.......2003-03-17

                I generally despise most science books. Occasionally one rises from the muck and gets my attention. This is one of them.

                Before even reading it, I had a good hint that this was a winner when I discovered how the topics in it were chosen. The authors surveyed many groups: Physics professors, Physics teachers, Physics students (high school and college), and professional scientists. They asked about important topics and unimportant topics. They looked into what they wished they knew better and what they didn't have much use for. They also looked into utility: does this topic lead to other topics or is it an end in itself.

                They discovered that circuitry is a dead end, but fields are not. Thus, circuitry is relegated to an optional chapter and fields are in the main part of the book.

                The book has 20 required chapters based on the surveys I mentioned earlier. At the end are 8 optional chapters that contain other traditional Physics concepts that many teachers may wish to include. Circuitry, for example, is one many teachers feel should be included.

                The book does a nice job in organizing material. There is no right way, but there are plenty of wrong ones. This book develops ideas between chapters. For example, they begin by analyzing linear motion (but not acceleration). Then, in the next chapter, they add forces and acceleration, which is then linked to the material in the chapter before.

                The authors do not shy away from advanced material. They are willing to put it where it belongs, but do not bury it in jargon. For example, they may introduce the derivative, but not go into all the terminology. It's enough that the concept is there (in a Physics, not Math sense).

                If I could have a dream Physics book for the Physics I teach, this book is it.

                5 out of 5 stars A Textbook That is NOT boring.......2000-04-11

                PSSC (Physical Science Study Committee) Physics is a wonderful but hard textbook for high school physics classes, although freshmen attending non-calculus introductory physics courses will find the book suitable for them too. The illustrations (for example the high-speed photograph showings large distortion of a racket and a ball, and the figure showing a toy merry-go-round driven by a falling weight) are excellent and explanations are clear. Reading this book is not a sterile, nor boring task. The book covers Motion, Atom, Electricity, Magnetism, Heat, Light and Wave. For those who do not want to bother with mathematics but like to have some more knowledge on quantum mechanics and relativity (not covered in the book), "The Dancing Wu Li Masters" by Gary Zukay is highly recommended.

                                    Book Description

                                    For the past twenty years, the work of Michelle Z. Rosaldo has had a profound impact on feminism and anthropology. Gender Matters commemorates her central role in shaping anthropological work and points toward new directions for critical inquiry based on a reconsideration of Rosaldo's theoretical and political interventions.
                                    With the publication of Woman, Culture, and Society in 1974, Michelle Rosaldo initiated nothing less than a reconstruction of anthropology that placed feminist analysis at the center of the discipline. Through a rereading of Rosaldo's ideas and arguments, this collection provides in-depth analysis of Rosaldo's many contributions to anthropology and feminism. Each of the essays derives theoretically and politically useful insights from Rosaldo's work and sets them in motion for new intellectual and political practices. The authors do not always share Rosaldo's perspectives, nor do they necessarily agree with each other. But, together, they point to exciting syntheses of old and new feminist theory and practice.
                                    Alejandro Lugo is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Latina/o Studies, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Bill Maurer is Assistant Professor of Anthropology, University of California at Irvine.
