Great book for high school graduates wondering what's next........2007-03-05
What a great resource this book has been for my son and for me. It provides not only some excellent specific job and volunteer possibilities, but also an overall framework to consider interests and abilities.
The book is full of specific information on internships and how to find them, along with international and national volunteer and paid positions.
I thought the section on how to write a resume was excellent, along with the self assessment tools for academic and personal skills.
I have bought copies for friends who have kids about to graduate from high school who are thinking about what's next--college or ??

Supportive, clear, resourceful info for high school grad........1999-04-09
I wish I'd had a book like this when I graduated high school and wasn't quite ready for college. Fortunately, this book is available to my kids--it gives confidence, courage, clarity, and loads of information. And, it promotes flexible thinking, allowing them to see graduation and beyond as the next step to adulthood. This author really cares about kids.

much ado about nothing.......2006-11-14
I but this book with great expectations. I expected to be an eye opener. To read something interesting. Instead I found a book full of old and dated cliches. totally useless. If you read hotel babylon, wich is a novel, you will learn more about the hotel industry. Only one good essay there from the MD of Relais and Chateux. Reathing the others I was bored senseless. DO NOT BUY IT

A Coherent Collection from the Master.......1999-12-13
There are innumerable, many incoherent collections of Chekhov's short fiction: such is the bane of an author being in the public domain. What makes this collection superior is that Edmund Wilson, the greatest critic of the 20th Century, assembled it, and there is at last a logic applied to its assemblage beyond the crude dictates of chronology.
Wilson realized that Chekhov seems spotty if not incomprehensible when his short caricatures and romances are interleaved with brooding tales of peasant lives. Think of a Twain compilation where "The Man Who Corrupted Hadleyburg" and "Punch Brothers Punch" are sandwiched together.
So Wilson's collection takes the best of Chekhov's "social" tales of his last decade, stories that focus on groups of Russians, whether it be the bourgeois, the peasants, the workers, or the decaying aristocracy. In these stories, Chekhov is on Tolstoyean grounds, and holds his own remarkably.
However, this strategy means sacrifice: the beautiful, sparkling "Lady with the Dog" would not sit well in this grim company, so it is excluded.
