Book Description
Roughly once a year, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund, the U.S. treasury secretary and in some cases the finance ministers of other G-7 countries will get a call from the finance minister of a large emerging market economy. The emerging market finance minister will indicate that the country is rapidly running out of foreign reserves, that it has lost access to international capital markets and, perhaps, that is has lost the confidence of its own citizens. Without a rescue loan, it will be forced to devalue its currency and default either on its government debt or on loans to the country's banks that the government has guaranteed. This book looks at these situations and the options available to alleviate the problem. It argues for a policy that recognizes that every crisis is different and that different cases need to be handled within a framework that provides consistency and predictability to borrowing countries as well as those who invest in their debt.

Book Description
The respected classic, now in a handy paperback edition
Originally published in 1971, Harry Van Trees' Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory, Part II is one of the classic references in the area of nonlinear modulation theory and analog communication. Highly readable and well organized, it is as valuable today for professionals, researchers, and students interested in the estimation of continuous waveforms as it was over thirty years ago.
Part II focuses on the problem of finding the optimum estimate of a waveform which is embedded in a signal in a nonlinear manner. The following topics are covered in detail:
* Bayesian Cramér-Rao bound on the mean-square estimation error
* Optimum demodulators for frequency-modulation systems
* Phase estimation: the synchronization problem
* Fokker-Planck techniques for nonlinear analysis in the presence of noise
* Optimum angle-modulation systems
* Rate distortion bounds for analog message transmission
* Analog communication over randomly time-varying channels
* State variable analysis procedures
For students in signal processing or professionals looking for a reliable refresher on waveform estimation, Detection, Estimation, and Modulation Theory, Part II provides authoritative, practical coverage by one of the most renowned figures in the field. Although most current systems are implemented digitally, the bounds on performance developed in Part II are still applicable.

Book Description
This book is an excellent reference for those working in the broad fields of communication theory, information theory, and modem design. It is essential for researchers in modulation and coding for voiceband telephone line modems; signal constellation design; nonlinear precoding for modems; and trellis coding.
The author presents the theory behind the new modulation and coding techniques included in ITU-T Recommendation V.34. Topics discussed include signal constellation shaping by shell mapping, nonlinear precoding, four-dimensional trellis codes, and fast equalizer training by using periodic sequences and FFT methods. In addition, several approaches that were considered but not accepted are presented including trellis shaping, trellis precoding, and modulus conversion. The book is essentially a history of the standard for a state-of-the-art voiceband telephone channel modem. Many of these techniques were invented during the committee deliberations. The rapid advances in digital signal processor technology allowed the committee to consider approaches that were significantly more complex and effective than anything implemented previously.
The first chapter presents the basics of lattices and is the foundation for multi-point constellation design. The second chapter discusses the theoretical properties of large constellations including shaping gain, constellation expansion ratio, and peak-to-average ratio. Chapter 3 presents the elements of convolutional and trellis codes for reference purposes. A technique for constellation shaping called trellis shaping is presented in Chapter 4. Chapter 5 examines methods for nonlinear channel precoding. Chapter 6 discusses the combination of the trellis precoding and nonlinear precoding methods of Chapters 4 and 5 into a technique called trellis precoding. Another method of assigning data bits to constellation point called modulus conversion is discussed in Chapter 7. The shell mapping method of constellation shaping is presented in Chapter 8. The four-dimensional constellation used by V.34 modems is discussed in Chapter 9. The combination of shell mapping, precoding, and trellis coding arranged in a feedback loop that was selected for Recommendation V.34 is the topic of Chapter 10. Finally, Chapter 10 presents the theory of a special type of periodic sequence called a CAZAC sequence and shows how an adaptive equalizer can be rapidly trained using these periodic sequences and FFT methods.
Much of the material has never been published in a book before, but exists only in journal articles and ITU-T working papers. These topics include trellis shaping, LTF precoding, trellis precoding, modulus conversion, shell mapping, the V.34 four-dimensional constellation, the combination of shell mapping, precoding and trellis coding in a feedback arrangement, and CAZAC sequences.
The book will interest any professional involved with modem design. It is also suitable as a text for an advanced course in modulation and coding at the graduate level.

Book Description
Continuous-Time Systems is a description of linear, nonlinear, time-invariant, and time-varying electronic continuous-time systems. As an assemblage of physical or mathematical components organized and interacting to convert an input signal (also called excitation signal or driving force) to an output signal (also called response signal), an electronic system can be described using different methods offered by the modern systems theory. To make possible for readers to understand systems, the book systematically covers major foundations of the systems theory. First, the quantitative and qualitative methods of systems description are presented along with the stability analysis. The representation of linear time-invariant systems in the time domain is provided using the convolution, ordinarily differential equations (ODEs), and state space. In the frequency domain, these systems are analyzed using the Fourier and Laplace transforms. The linear time-varying systems are represented using the general convolution, ODEs, and state space. The nonlinear time-invariant systems are described employing the Taylor and Volterra series expansions, ODEs, state space, and approximate methods such as averaging, equivalent linearization, and describing function. Finally, the representation of nonlinear time-varying systems is given using the Taylor and Volterra series, ODEs, modulation functions method, and state space modelling. Review of matrix theory and other useful generalizations are postponed to Appendices.

More care was needed........2006-09-25
This vitally important anthology has little if any competition, which is unfortunate, as it has been far too sloppily done. This is particularly noticeable, to me at least, in the classical section. Even the English is full of often seriously misleading misprints; and the occasional inclusion of Greek words almost invariably betrays great ignorance of that language and its alphabet, on the part of the editorial team.
Translator's explanatory footnotes are in many cases imported raw from the bilingual Loeb Classical Library edition in which the translation originally appeared, but the system these notes use for specifying other loci within the same work is in too many cases not supported in the printing of the translated text itself. Thus if a note cross-references a locus that happens to be included in the anthology, it still cannot be followed. In Plato, for instance, such cross references are given in the notes in standard Stephanine form, but the translated dialogues have been here reprinted without any Stephanine markings whatsoever.
Other selections are reproduced without even the most vital of translator's notes, as that in Kennedy's translation of Gorgias' "Encomium of Helen," which indicates that part of one section is translated not from the actual Greek text, which is hopelessly corrupt at that point, but rather from a conjectural reconstruction.
Given the void this anthology filled, such problems were perhaps forgivable in the first edition; but why they were suffered to remain uncorrected in a second edition a decade later is inexplicable.
Great condition!.......2005-10-04
I was quite impressed with the condition that the book came in! Only problem was that it took a lil longer than expected to arrive, which caused me to get a lil behind, but I was just so impressed with the unexpected great condition it was in!
Pretty Good Textbook.......2000-07-10
The texts are well chosen, though perhaps less well edited. It's great to have Plato, Erasmus, Derrida, and Cixous all together, but I think the book could have been more carefully done. I think there's much in the selection from Aristotle that could have been cut, and much from Quintillian that should have been included (material from Book III, for example). The Cicero abridgement is poorly done--it's difficult to infer who's speaking at the beginning of the selection from Book II. Boethius doesn't really need to be here, and it's difficult to see how the Kristeva essay really has anything to do with rhetoric. And the introductory sections are not what they could be. Often, difficult technical terms in the selections that follow them are NOT explains and defined clearly in the introductory notes. This is a usable text that is not carefully done.
Rhetorical theory.......2000-05-10
This book was tremendously helpful in establishing the history and current thought about rhetoric. The only complaint was that the feminist rhetoric section was grossly underrepresented. Excellent for ancient as well as modern studies.
