    Book Description

The growing body of literature on ethnic businesses has emphasized the importance of small family-based businesses as a key form of immigrant adaptation. Although there have been numerous references to the importance of "family labor" as a key ethnic resource, few studies have examined the work roles and family dynamics entailed in various kinds of ethnic businesses.

Helping Out addresses the centrality of children's labor participation in such family enterprises. Discussing the case of Chinese families running take-out food shops in Britain, Miri Song examines the ways in which children contribute their labor and the context in which children come to understand and believe in "helping out" as part of a "family work contract." Song explores the implications of these children's labor participation for family relationships, cultural identity, and the future of the Chinese community in Britain. While doing so, she argues that the practical importance and the broader meanings of children's work must be understood in the context of immigrant families' experiences of migration and ethnic minority status in Western, white-majority societies.

4 out of 5 stars truly gripping reading for sociology!.......2002-10-08

as an asian american, the type of themes discussed here are fascinating, particularly for those of us who are both hyphenated americans of any sort. as well of fascination is the whole concept of being in between generations, such as 1st, 2nd, etc. but this book points out that one can even be a fractional generation. in asian cultures such as japan, china, and korea, there are actual words which identify what generation of ethnicity one is in a new land, and this book reinforces this. a great read for anyone who claims identity between 2 or more cultures.

    Book Description

The field of financial mathematics has developed tremendously over the past thirty years, and the underlying models that have taken shape in interest rate markets and bond markets, being much richer in structure than equity-derivative models, are particularly fascinating and complex. This book introduces the tools required for the arbitrage-free modelling of the dynamics of these markets. Andrew Cairns addresses not only seminal works but also modern developments. Refreshingly broad in scope, covering numerical methods, credit risk, and descriptive models, and with an approachable sequence of opening chapters, Interest Rate Models will make readers--be they graduate students, academics, or practitioners--confident enough to develop their own interest rate models or to price nonstandard derivatives using existing models.

The mathematical chapters begin with the simple binomial model that introduces many core ideas. But the main chapters work their way systematically through all of the main developments in continuous-time interest rate modelling. The book describes fully the broad range of approaches to interest rate modelling: short-rate models, no-arbitrage models, the Heath-Jarrow-Morton framework, multifactor models, forward measures, positive-interest models, and market models. Later chapters cover some related topics, including numerical methods, credit risk, and model calibration. Significantly, the book develops the martingale approach to bond pricing in detail, concentrating on risk-neutral pricing, before later exploring recent advances in interest rate modelling where different pricing measures are important.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book!!!.......2004-03-29

This book provides an excellent reference and point of view of old and new topics in the interest rate modelling field.

From short rate models, HJM model, multifactor models, positive interest models and market models, it gives you a very well explanation all without forget the calibration of them.

You can not find many books about this topic. This one gives a clear and easy to follow chapters in order to increase your knowledge of this not easy field. The formality is a key point in all the book.

      Description:
In this paper, we introduce a new type of nonlinear model, called the min-max model, and analyze its properties for a pair of series. The stability conditions of this system are given for a nonlinearly integrated bivariate series. Under these stability conditions, the difference between the two series exhibits threshold-type nonlinearity. It is possible to construct a threshold error correction model from the min-max processes. Neglected nonlinearity tests are applied, both to the univariate series and to the bivariate system, in order to detect nonlinearity, and it turns out that the tests using the bivariate series have better power. We apply the min-max model to U.S. Treasury bills and commercial paper interest rates. The spread of these interest rates shows threshold-type nonlinearity, and this model outperforms a linear model in terms of its predictability for out-of-sample data.

Richard Weisberg's Poethics book seems like a great starting point for exploring law and literature. In fact, it should be the very LAST thing you read. Weisberg cares so much about literature that he disdains the reader. His views on such topics as Billy Budd, Sailor and The Merchant of Venice remind me of people who get high or drunk and then think that their cutesy arguments are somehow noble. Weisberg likes to use 10-cent words where simplicity would be more effective. Weisberg rightly creates a foundation for each of his arguments, but when those arguments fail to pan out, he relies on flimsy spur of the moment theories and his forte, big words that he understands only superficially (it's clear that the man is educated, its also clear he's not educated in language). For example, Weisberg declares decades of scholarship void as he announces that John Claggart is the christ-figure because of the initials J.C. and because the tale was recounted in the News of the Mediterranean. Its almost like Weisberg didn't read the bible, forgot about the meaning of martyrdom and confused the role of the savior with that of the betrayer. Actually, Weisberg's entire book is filled with academic sounding idiocies. Weisberg takes these wacky positions just to sell books. In his class he is unable to defend these positions against the modest queries of students. Weisberg, in the world of law and literature, is the dumb kid on the block who whines to his mom that the other kids won't play with him. Then the dumb kid's mom complains to the other neighborhood moms who make their kids play with the dumb kid. So you have the dumb kid muddying up your games, but the smart kids know to NOT pay him any heed. Weisberg's book is about a giant ego crunch. You should only read this book after to you looked into what Law and Literature is really about. Then you can read the laughable babblings of Prof. Weisberg.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent! - an extremely useful and absorbing book.......2000-10-29

as a student interested in Law & Literature I found Poethics an approachable, interesting, and understandable introduction into the subject. While Weisberg's position on law and literature is fairly evident he does not continually moralize or hit you over the head with it. His analysis of particular texts are always consistent with his overall propositions, adding to the books readability. I found his commentary on other writers in the field useful and evenhanded. This book broadened my thinking and deepened my understanding on the subject. Well worth the read.

            Book Description

Aristotle’s biological works - constituting over 25% of his surviving corpus and for centuries largely unstudied by philosophically oriented scholars - have been the subject of an increasing amount of attention of late. This collection brings together some of the best work that has been done in this area, with the aim of exhibiting the contribution that close study of these treatises can make to the understanding of Aristotle’s philosophy. The book is divided into four parts, each with an introduction which places its essays in relation to each other and to the wider issues of the book as a whole. The first part is an overview of the relationship of Aristotle’s biology to his philosophy; the other three each concentrate on a set of issues central to Aristotelian study - definition and demonstration; teleology and necessity in nature; and metaph themes such as the unity of matter and form and the nature of substance.

5 out of 5 stars Among the best philosophical studies on Aristotle I've read .......2006-03-20

The four causes, form, teleology... these are familiar concepts any student of Aristotle would know, but how many I wonder know their biological roots? Here a group of experts in Aristotle spend over 400 pp. exploring, analyzing, and discussing the relationship between Aristotle's philosophy of science (in the broadest sense) on the one hand, and his biological treatises (which constitute over 25% of the Aristotelian corpus) on the other: do they belong to the same corpus or are they significantly different works? How systematic Aristotle really is? Is there any connection between his biological and philosophical enterprise and our own scientific endeavor in the modern era?
These and other questions are answered thorought the book by a panel of experts that reads like a "who is who" of Aristotelian philosophy. Some essays are so good that they are, in my opinion, among the best pieces of philosophical work I'd read in years (personally enlighting was Furth's "Aristotle's biological universe: an overview").
More importantly, many of the questions Aristotle asked in his biological works are still with us even today. Although our worldview and his differ in many significant ways, any student of philosophy and history of science, as well as anyone interested to know for that matter, would benefit from studying Aristotle's answers... and on this "Philosophical issues in Aristotle's biology" is, in spite of its years, a most welcome help. Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Too Wordy, Doesn't get to the Point.......2005-10-04

I used this text for my sophomore year physics course. I thought it was very wordy, almost 80 percent of the pages are taken up by paragraph after paragraph. I want to learn something, not keep reading a whole essay after essay. It was frustrating because you have to navigate so many long paragraphs that were "going in circles" trying to explain something. I am now studying for my MCATs and need something to review physics with. But I'm dumping this book. Its too wordy - so spare yourself some grief. Stop reading through what feels like a whole dictionary. Lets get to the point!

                    3 out of 5 stars Second Edition.......2005-09-10

I took Physics using the Second edition, out in 1954. I still have a copy. I used to have two copies, but my brother-in-law who edits textbooks asked for it. I had no idea there was a 10th edition. I recall something that happened perhaps eight years ago. Concerning my job, some people and I were talking about heat, and a fellow not party to the conversation asked me
if I knew what absolute zero was. Well, it turned out that this fellow was a physics professor--I'd probably not answered him if I'd known that, but I recalled the Sears and Zemansky
definition from the 2nd edition involving a chain of Carnot engines receiving heat one from the prior until such an engine
is reached that it rejects no heat. He said I was wrong, and he gave me the ideal gas version, contending that as no true Carnot engin exists, the answer I gave had no validity. I later sent him a Xerox of the relevant pages of the book. The interesting thing is that he took the ideal gas view to be true, but the Carnot engine version to be untrue because no true Carnot engine exists, but did not find it strange that the ideal gas version involves an "ideal" gas. Odd. To be truthful, I hope today's texts are clearer. Mine has few illustrations and very little explaining. One reason current students may have difficulty with the 10th edition of Sears and Zemansky or any other physics text could be a lack of understanding of trig. Educators ought to teach in high school or earlier how dependent understanding physics is upon understanding trig. A good trig course is a better foundation for university level physics than high school physics.

I used this textbook for my first college level physics course. The electricity and magnetism section are simply the best. Later on, I found myself referring back to it when I took an undergrad electromagnetism course. Now, even as a graduate student--when I find myself drowning in an ocean of details, this textbook has helped me navigate with purpose and understanding. Simply put, this book is a true academic investment.

                    1 out of 5 stars Confusing - I don't like this book.......2003-05-18

I'm using this book for my first college physics course. I find the text very dry and boring, and the problems at the end of each chapter are confusing and not well explained. For example, I'm doing my homework and one of the problems is "speculate on how gaseous diffusion works." Just that, does not explain what gaseous diffusion is. As with many of the problems in this book, the first thing that comes into my mind is "what the hell are you talking about??" Another question asks me to compare the length of something to "the diameter of a molecule." Huh? What molecule? Are all molecules the same diameter? And how the heck am I supposed to know what that diameter is? Gah. I do not recommend this book unless you like being confused.

Also, the discussion questions at the end of each chapter are very nice, but the answers are not provided anywhere. So how are you supposed to know if you answered them correctly? And another thing I really hate about this book, it will say "and why do you think this happens?" and then not tell you why. About 90% of the time my answer is "I have no clue why that happened." :/ This book makes me hate physics.

I bought this book because I thought is was "College Physics" by Sears. Well, it isn't. This looks, feels and reads like a high school textbook - if you're looking for a serious, academic-level introduction to physics, then don't buy this. Its full of pictures and "real life" examples that are intended to spare the student any effort and save him/her from abstract thought. Much is lost because of this, and we're left with a bunch of pictures and stories about the authors' flying hobby.

Don't buy this, please, I regret it everytime I see it sitting uselessly next to the open copy of the Sears book I loaned from the library.

                              Book Description

Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad's fictional account of a journey up the Congo river in 1890, raises important questions about colonialism and narrative theory. This casebook contains materials relevant to a deeper understanding of the origins and reception of this controversial text, including Conrad's own story "An Outpost of Progress," together with a little-known memoir by one of Conrad's oldest English friends, a brief history of the Congo Free State by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a parody of Conrad by Max Beerbohm. A wide range of theoretical approaches are also represented, examining Conrad's text in terms of cultural, historical, textual, stylistic, narratological, post-colonial, feminist, and reader-response criticism. The volume concludes with an interview in which Conrad compares his adventures on the Congo with Mark Twain's experiences as a Mississippi pilot.
