Small-scale fishing, a house-hold based enterprise in Puerto Rico, rarely provides sufficient income for a family, but it anchors their culture and sense of themselves within that culture. Even when family members must engage in wage work to supplement house-hold income, they think of themselves as fishers. Liche typifies these wage workers: "When he was quite young, he left the island to struggle in other lands, to work, to raise a family, to send home the money he earned. Ten, twenty, thirty years passed...during which he did not once fish or even see the ocean. But in a boat-building factory in New Jersey, in a bakery in the Bronx, on the production line of a chemical factory, on dozens of construction sites, every single day he made a mental review of the waters, the isles and cays ...and entertained no thought that was not related to his return."

Fishers at Work, Workers at Sea describes Puerto Rican fishing families as they negotiate homeland and diaspora. It considers how wage work affects their livelihoods and identities at home and how these independent producers move in and out of global commodity markets. Drawing on some 100 life histories and years of fieldwork, David Griffith and Manuel Valdes Pizzini have developed a complex, often moving portrait of the men and women who fiercely struggle to hang onto the coastal landscapes and cultural heritage tied to the Caribbean Sea.

This book represents a twenty plus years journey of two meticulous social scientists through documents of marine anthropology, direct observations of coastal dwellers in the Caribbean and Eastern United States, the life histories of artisan fisherman and the history of Puerto Rico. The authors place the traditional, ancient occupation of fishing within the context of modern globalization to make clear how modern national and international economic trends affect individuals in terms of labor, community structure and family relations.

Griffith and Valdés Pizzini frame their field observations within an exhaustive review of marine and coastal research studies as well as allusions to the writings of Gabriel García Márquez and Octavio Paz. The use of this resource evokes in the reader emotions that favor identification with the book and with the subjects whose life histories are used to document the book.

The authors reflect a detailed knowledge of Puerto Ricos coastal space, fisher family cycles, labor turnovers and fishing techniques which they use in a wider context to make comparisons with other Caribbean Islands and the U. S. Coastal environments. The field observations unmask the role of women in what they call the entire social universe that is controlled and governed by women in fisher domestic circles. The book presents the government efforts to organize fishers and describes the adjustments that they make according to their own circumstances and the external factors affecting them.

The dynamics of coastal affairs and the diversity of forces impinging upon fishing reveal throughout the book the multiple conflicts that exist in the sea fronts of Puerto Rico and most coastal areas of the world. Activities and social sectors that demand more space for development, recreation, business and international trade covet the finite nature of the coastal line.

Applied professionals and academicians should read this book. Managers of coastal affairs and policy makers could also acquire the needed perspective for understanding the economic interests and social trends affecting development of the coastal sector, its resources, communities and people. Academically speaking the book is a required reading in the areas of sociology, marine anthropology, labor relations and social change. No scholar interested in the Caribbean should miss reading this enlightening book.

Good book but should be more detailed.......2006-03-30

After I read the whole book, I would say it is not a bad book for a beginner. The biggest problem with this book is that it does not explain everything clearly or in details. I must it read this book several times before I can understand the concepts.

Absolute Beginers book.......2005-08-02

i have purshased this book after i have read "all about hedge funds" which is extremely advanced and useful book, "all about commodities" is very helpful and covering a lot of issues regarding the topic, however, its for beginers only if you have a single idea about commodities, futures & options, then this book is not for you

a bit dated and rushed........2002-08-08

All About Commodities was helpful to me, but it is dated, having no knowledge of internet trading, and it seems rushed considering that 2 other books that summarize ALL types of investments gave better introductions to the basic concepts of commodities trading. These other two books are: "Stocks, Bonds, Options, Futures" by the staff of the New York Institute of Finance and "The Wall Street Journal Guide to Understanding Money and Markets" by Richard Saul Wurman. These other two both introduce the term "mark to the market" (and other terms) very well, but this book only mentions it in passing on page 108. When discussing trading software, they mention, something called "neutral network" software, which obviously should be "neural network". Not at typo because they spelled it that way 3 or 4 times! Although the book has a glossary, neither of these two terms end up in it.

The book provided a lot of helpful info that is well-written and clear; I was especially appreciative of the excercises at the end of each chapter since there is a bit of math involved with commodities trading and one needs to practice at it. I was NOT appreciative of the chapter dedicated to studying for the NCFE. It was just a filler where they stuffed in a sample exam, answers, and some commentary. Something like that should be put in an appendix, but better yet, made into a separate booklet. I would recommend this book, but even more highly if the authors put out an updated second edition where they improve the introductory chapter, devote a new chapter to internet trading, and make sure the glossary covers ALL the terms.

Excellent for it's purposes........2000-06-13

I just started a job as a reporter for the New York Cotton Exchange and knew next to nothing about commodities and futures. After reading this book I felt I had a solid foot in the door and now feel ready to dive further into the complicated subject of commodity trading. Excellent choice for a thorough introduction to the subject. In fact, I just purchased McCafferty's All About Options: From the Inside Out. Recommended read.

A good place to start........2000-02-07

Warsendorf and McCafferty have written a well organized primer for the beginning commodities trader. As a rank beginner myself, I truly appreciated the glossary of terms. The nomenclature of this subject is considerable; however, the authors introduce the subject on a level that most will be able to understand.

The title is somewhat misleading as this is not "all" there is to know about commodities, but the authors do not profess to have covered the subject in its entirety. They even give a fairly extensive list of books for further reading. What they have done is to cover the major aspects of commodities trading in a comprehesive, well-written manner. Though even as a beginner, I would have liked to have had a more thorough explanation of the various trading systems (many are covered). Or, perhaps just more examples showing how the systems work in actual practice. This is about my only criticizm.

Warsendorf and McCafferty's philosophy on developing your own trading system was refreshing to me. Instead of saying that one should follow their system, they say that you should study many trading systems and then develop your own. It reminded me of Bruce Lee's "Tao of Jeet Kune Do." Much of the book is filled with this sort of sound, common sense advice.

All in all, it was a good read. I feel well grounded in the subject and ready to tackle more detailed books.

If you're a beginner, this is a good place to start; if you're a veteran, try the tests at the end of the chapters and see how your knowledge of commodities and trading stacks up!

Mental Health is only Emotional Health.......2004-09-10

While we consider this little, the reality is that among the types of health, physical, economic, intellectual, and emotional or psychological, mental health is actually little more than psychological and emotional health. Where men deny their emotions, therefore, it is often conclusory that women are the ones upon whom mental health has been focused, leaving men once again in the desert of health issues. Where women regularly evoke their emotional needs, men seldom do, and society places numerous substitutes to deter, or defer, the issues that come automatically from being human, as if men were robots. Since men spend so much of their lives at work, this necessarily invokes the issues of healthful working environments that properly and appropriately honor the emotional lives of men, and do not treat them as robotic. Astute lawyers will begin to increasingly define the importance of mental health in work and employment issues as they have been forced to do for women (coming into the workplace with all of their emotional clothing). Having long denied males the same privilege, the integration of men and women in the workplace has the potential to overload the human resources department responsible for insuring the collateral issues that confront employees to insure productivity for the employer, and contented employees. Far from being "girlie men," the normal acceptance of human qualties is long overdue for men, and any company of social responsibility will jump at the chance to prove its image of "valuable work climates" for both men and women. This blossoming field of context in connection with both home and work environments, and the nexus of child raising must necessarily become the next giant step for corporations to address their corporate climate as worthy employers. Far from the hierarchial vision of the industrial complex, the 21st Century workplace that incorporates both men and women in positions of responsibility is advised to insure both physical health and mental health for its employees, as well as trying to handle the enormous task of diversity issue that have become one test of humanitarian excellence in a world increasingly complex and interdependent. For companies who ignore this vast area of health issues, they will continue to become the lumbering dinosaurs they must be in an integrated gender world where master/servant relationships and law have ignored the importance of human emotions as mental health. Correctly defining the existence of the whole human being was bound to come sooner or later.

From the author: Thermal properties of blends of poly(aryl ether ether ketone), PEEK, with a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer, Vectra[R] were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction techniques. Isothermal crystallization experiments were performed over a wide range of crystallization temperatures and compositions to follow the effect of Vectra[R] content on the crystallization kinetics of PEEK. A reduction in the crystallization rate of PEEK was related to a change in the mechanism of crystallization of PEEK, controlled in turn by the concentration of Vectra[R] in the blend. The addition of Vectra[R] resulted in a significant enhancement in the crystallization rate of PEEK. In addition, a reduction in this parameter is shown at a blend of 30% of Vectra[R] Differences in the crystallization behavior of PEEK are related to structural properties of these systems measured by simultaneous real time WAXS and SAXS experiments using synchrotron radiation. Results of melting behavior of PEEK, subsequent to isothermal crystallization, were interpreted based on the effects of Vectra[R] on the formation of two crystal families of PEEK. With his novel La Emancipada (1863) Miguel Riofrio led the Ecuadorian literature into the modern world. Written at mid-ninteteenth century this work expresses a method of believable representation -non-biased and objective- of the real world, based upon a careful observation of reality; a censoring and critical attention of the Ecuadorian social life in his times. >From that standpoint and through techniques he employed, Riofrio placed his novel within the leading movement in Europe -France- after 1840: Realism. He appears as a writer well versed in in the latest knowledges, both cultural and scientific, and as a forefront scholar due to the use of realistic techniques and procedures; he represents, through narrative space and time, cultural, geographic, racial and gender issues that transform Rosaura, the main character, in zones of opposition, ambiguity and exile, demonstrating that she understands her society's structure and how it works. This leads his readers into sharing the the interpretative process of the character, and to reach the same understanding. Following Balzac, Riofrio is a realist well aware of his limits; he also depicts what molds, controls and limits narrative: history, economy, psicology and other precepts considered universal at writing time. The narration therefore shows the Ecuadorean historic and cultural moment, along cientific, literary and cultural knowledge of European origin. In this way Riofrio delves through his fiction into a zone untread both by his connationals and by many Latin Americans of his times. The new democratic ideas stimulate in him a wider scope from which he portraits the dominant strains of his society, including it's ill-understood morals and yesterday's ideas that constrain thought and stagnate the nation's development; by doing so he drives the reader into considering the relationships between classes and genders, and subsequent behaviours. To read La Emancipada is to perceive a! close enough version of the real ninteenth century society, and a way of having a direct experience of it.

In this edition profesor Flor María Rodríguez-Arenas [Licenciada, Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, and Postgrado: Instituto Caro y Cuervo (Bogotá, Colombia), M.A: The University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, USA), Ph.D.: The University of Texas (Austin, USA). The concepts of class, gender and ethnicity are systematically associated with levels and types of discourse used in narrative and the relations among story, teller, and audience. Also, speech acts and other textual strategies are incorporated into their social, political and cultural contexts in order to demonstrate the powers of dispersion and transformation, the violent impact of ignorance, and the social abuse that different levels of society, especially women, and indigenous peoples, experienced in a historical moment in Ecuador during the 19th century.
