Computational Finance presents a modern computational approach to mathematical finance within the Windows environment, and contains financial algorithms, mathematical proofs and computer code in C/C++. The author illustrates how numeric components can be developed which allow financial routines to be easily called by the complete range of Windows applications, such as Excel, Borland Delphi, Visual Basic and Visual C++.

These components permit software developers to call mathematical finance functions more easily than in corresponding packages. Although these packages may offer the advantage of interactive interfaces, it is not easy or computationally efficient to call them programmatically as a component of a larger system. The components are therefore well suited to software developers who want to include finance routines into a new application.

Typical readers are expected to have a knowledge of calculus, differential equations, statistics, Microsoft Excel, Visual Basic, C++ and HTML.

A CD-ROM is included which contains: working computer code, demonstration applications and also pdf versions of several research articles.

A Fair and Comprehensive Approach to a Complicated Subject.......2000-11-27

From the perspective of a city planner representing a city considering the "opportunity" of legalized gambling, I had searched for a book that comprehensively tackled the subject from both sides of the difficult issue. This is the first such book that effectively meets that goal. Heretofore, much of what I had read had a particularly biased approach that failed to fairly represent the pros and cons of legalized gambling. This book is a good start, but should be complemented with additional readings and up to date statistics and anecdotes.

Well said Your Royal Highness.This book is not only about Highgrove,the Prince of Wales' estate.But what it is really about is the transition from conventional into organic gardening and farming.Prince Charles has a lot of influence and connections to sources that can only help this planet to start healing.A lot of industrial methods of farming techniques took so much out of the soil,poisoning it with chemicals,and now it is time for us to gather and start changing our actions,and putting back what we took out of it.We need to think that every gesture has a consequence.A price to pay.
And that is why people of this earth are very lucky to have an ambassador such as the Prince of Wales.His battle to make nations understand these consequences is a hard task.
Of course we do not all have his kind of ressources.We also do not have a team of gardeners to weed and manage our garden.But think about it this way.We also do not have an agenda as charged as Prince Charles'.So every gardener,every farmer can do what this book preaches and prays for.Respect and listen to the land that is yours.As big or as small a parcel it may be.

I learned about the old ways of farming.Why they put the cows on a straw diet before calving.How to increase the chance of twin or triplet lambs.How to prepare the farming season,when to cut hay and why to do it this way......and the list goes on.
This book contains things the old folks teach us.Traditions handed down fron generation to generation.Things that you would not usually find in books.
"Highrove:Portrait of an Estate" is a Jewel.It should belong in every book collection,may it be as a coffee table book,but also as a reference for times to come.

Speciation is the process by which co-existing daughter species evolve from one ancestral species - e.g., humans, chimpanzees, and gorillas arising from a common ancestor around 5,000,000 years ago. However, many questions about speciation remain controversial. The Birds of Northern Melanesia provides by far the most comprehensive study yet available of a rich fauna, composed of the 195 breeding land and fresh-water bird species of the Bismarck and Solomon Archipelagoes east of New Guinea. This avifauna offers decisive advantages for understanding speciation, and includes famous examples of geographic variation discussed in textbooks of evolutionary biology. The book results from 30 years of collaboration between the evolutionary biologist Ernst Mayr and the ecologist Jared Diamond. It shows how Northern Melanesian bird distributions provide snapshots of all stages in speciation, from the earliest (widely distributed species without geographic variation) to the last (closely related, reproductively isolated species occurring sympatrically and segregating ecologically). The presentation emphasizes the wide diversity of speciation outcomes, steering a middle course between one-model-fits-all simplification and ungeneralizable species accounts. Questions illuminated include why some species are much more prone to speciate than others, why some water barriers are much more effective at promoting speciation than others, and whether hypothesized taxon cycles, faunal dominance, and legacies of Pleistocene land bridges are real. These years of study have resulted in a huge database, complete with distributions of all 195 species on 76 islands, together with their taxonomy, colonization routes, ecological attributes, abundance, and overwater dispersal. Color plates depict 88 species and allospecies, many of which have never been seen before. For students of speciation, Northern Melanesian birds now constitute a model system against which other biotas can be compared. For population biologists interested in other problems besides speciation, this rich database can now be mined for insights.

In this book one of the leading experts on the birds of New Guinea shares some of his experiences on this fascinating island with the readers.
Similarly to Flannery's Throwim' Way Leg, most of the field trips described took place in Papua New Guinea, where highlands, lowlands and off-shore islands were all visited.
In one chapter, the author ventures across the border to Indonesian West Papua, where he visited the central highlands.
Not just a mere personal account, the text is full of information about the ecology and fauna (especially birdlife) of this unique land.
I have had the fortune to be able to visit New Guinea repeatedly myself, but reading this book made me want to return there ASAP!

Return of the Ether - A Book Worth Reading.......2000-03-28

As an electrical engineer with an interest in physics & cosmology, I found Dr Deutsch's book a wonderful read. Not only does he present logical speculations to explain inconsistences in quantum mechanics & cosmology, but he accomplishes this in a straightforward, understandable & at times humorous manner.Because of his clear & lucid method of presentation, many physics instructors would find it rewarding to read this text book.

Este libro me parecio muy entrenido, la escritora narra la historia con todos esos detalles que nos hacen transportarnos al lugar donde ocurren los hechos, una vez se empieza a leer, uno trata de mantener la lectura hasta acabarlo y llega a identificarse con los personajes, disfrutando las historias de amor-odio que se producen.
