Everything You've Heard About Investing Is Wrong!, by respected money manager (and one-time professional blackjack player) William H. Gross, bucks traditional wisdom by predicting that stocks and bonds will average returns of just 6 percent over the next decade. In terms understandable to novice and experienced investors alike, it then suggests ways to maximize profits during this post-bull period. Liberally sprinkled with personal anecdotes, this is a surprisingly entertaining and thought-provoking book.
Book Description
One of today's best money managers heralds the onset of a new financial era, in which the rules for investors will be dramatically different. With wit and humor, Gross details recommended strategies, revealing where the markets are headed--and how to ride them to success.
Customer Reviews:
Bond Guru Shares His Wisdom.......2007-08-13
What I Liked About It
-- Shows how to THINK ABOUT INVESTING as opposed to providing rote formulas that will probably be misused
-- Good brief overview of the yield curve and what that means for bond investing
-- Great discussion on strategies for investing in low-volatility rate environment
-- Enlightening discussion of the implicit "put" options in mortgages and corporate issues and how to take advantage of them
-- One of the most human and enjoyable financial books I've read
What Needed Work
-- Will disappoint those looking for a bond investing "playbook" or formula
-- Doesn't discuss in-depth strategies for high-volatility rate environments
-- A bit dated in some aspects.
-- Retail investors may not be able to apply these strategies without significant capital
I've written an in-depth review on my enlightened-american.com website but here's the basic gist:
All the great investors share some common characteristics -- an elegant simplicity, an ability to cut through to the essentials and an approach that integrates other disciplines or perspectives. Furthermore, the great investor-writers like Buffett, Greenblatt or Pabrai have that extraordinary ability to distill complex material into a comprehensible explanation that the average person can grasp. Bill Gross has all of this in spades and displays some of it throughout this book.
Writing in 1997, Gross posits that a combination of high debt levels, expanding globalization and shifting demographics would mean slow-growth GDP numbers. As a result, investors should expect bond/stock returns of 6% and 8%, respectively, since corporate returns should eventually track economic output. He lays out a basic lesson in the yield curve, the case for disinflation and strategies for investing in a world of 6-8% returns.
Along the way, Gross treats the reader to the pros and cons of corporate issues, mortgage-backed issues, emerging-market debt as well as more general concepts like macro-economic analysis, the famous PIMCO total return strategy and the plankton theory (especially pertinent in today's [2007] housing bust). As he discusses these potentially dull topics, he weaves real-life analogies into his explanations and as such, the book is entertaining to read while you're learning. Some of these analogies fit better than others (the Plankton Theory working best) but Gross turns a book about boring bonds into an investing page-turner -- an admirable feat.
Highlights for me include the discussion of corporate and mortgage-backed issues. He outlines their inherent drawbacks and then illustrates why and how to use these features to your advantage in a low-volatility rate environment. I also liked his discussion of stretching short-term yield maturities so that you get a nice bump in yield with marginally increasing risk.
I imagine that some may find fault with some of his predictions. Predictions are notoriously difficult and any inaccurate forecasting doesn't detract from the efficacy or validity of the investment strategies he lays out. His methods are sound and his record proves it -- it's up to you to know when to apply them.
Others may gripe about the non-linear nature of Gross' musings. These people are probably looking for a playbook on bond investing -- a no-nonsense, how-to treatment on bond investing. If that's what you're looking for, I would point to Cohen's Bond Bible. I would also suggest that you are doing yourself a disservice. There is no hands-free formula for successful investing. I can't speak for him but I imagine that Gross takes the long, winding path because for him, investing successfully is as much about surveying all of the societal landscape as it is about crunching numbers. Ultimately, an investing education is more than just how to invest -- it's about how to approach investing. The first path will always see you fighting the last war; the latter allows you to prepare for the war ahead.
-- Davy Bui

Global changes point toward a dramatically different next decade in the realm of finance. As the bull markets of the last twenty years fade away, new investment tools and strategies are necessary. In this book, William Gross, one of today's most respected money managers who has built his fame on tracking economic trends, prepares readers for a completely new approach to investing. In an accessible style, Gross intermingles discussions of investment with humor, wit, and personal anecdotes.
William H. Gross (Laguna Beach, California) is the founder, managing director, and CEO of Pacific Investment Management Company, which manages over $90 billion in assets for both institutional investors and individuals.
Customer Reviews:
Dennis Shore says : Read This Book!.......2006-07-01
If investing in bonds is part of your balanced and diversified investment strategy, Bill Gross is the first person and maybe the best person to read. While no one person has all the answers, it would be fair to say the smartest proven investors as a group is the smartest group to listen to. You can reach me, Dennis Shore at haleyshore.com
Disappointed.......2002-03-30
I waited anxiously to receive this book and I have to say regretably that I am totally disappointed. There is some useful information in it but it was written, IMO, as a theory as to what was going to happen in the final few years of the 20th century and Mr. Gross got it wrong. We saw the biggest rise and fall in the history of the market, not the 6 percent that Mr. Gross predicted. Rather than focusing so narrowly on what he believed was going to happen in a specific time period I was hoping for a general book and am disappointed because this book is dated.
junk.......2001-06-21
obviously i'm in the minority here, but i can't say that i learned anything from this book. he's a great bond fund manager, but imho he just doesn't convey any useful info in this book. his prose is fine, but i didn't learn a thing.
The World's Best Bond Fund Manager.......2001-04-29
If you don't already know it, Bill Gross is arguably the best bond fund manager in the world. He manages one of the largest funds in the world through the Pacific Investment Management Company.
Although the book is titled "Bill Gross on Investing", it has a fair amount of emphasis on bonds. Bill Gross makes a case for investing in bonds as opposed to equities. He argues that we are now entering a different era which he calls the "Era of 6 Percent". And in this era we are not likely to see the kind of high-octane equities prices we have been accustomed to in the past 20 years. Hence, the case for bond investing.
Along the way, Bill Gross also teaches various concepts of investment which would be useful to the interested investor. In fact, it is his avowed goal of this book to make the reading of investment fun. His background as a former navy pilot and a former successful Las Vegas card-counting gambler also makes for an interesting read.
All in all, I found his views and approach refreshingly different from the many other books emphasising equities as the way to go. This book has made me more aware of bonds and the range, flexibility and versatility it can bring to one's investment portfolio.
For those interested in reading more about bond investing, I would also recommend The Bond Book by Annette Thau and Beating The Dow With Bonds by Michael B. O'Higgins.
Fun Read, Good Advice.......1999-01-02
I found the investment advice in this book to be very fresh and helpful. Bill Gross clearly understands what drives the markets and he is able to explain his theories in a very clear and logical manner. Get this book if you want to understand more about the impact of macroeconomic fundamentals on the world of investing today.

single cell protein.......2003-08-07
Single cell protein has the potential to be developed into a very large source of supplemental protein that could be used in livestock feeding. In some regions single cell protein could become the principal protein source that is used for domestic livestock, depending upon the population growth and the availability of plant feed protein sources.

Book Description
This is the third edition of a well-established and highly successful undergraduate text. The content of the second edition has been reworked and added to wherever necessary. There are new sections on amorphous solids and liquid crystals, and completely new chapters on colloids and polymers. Using elementary mathematics and simple models, Professor Tabor leads the reader skillfully and systematically from the basic physics of interatomic and intermolecular forces, temperature, heat and thermodynamics, to a coherent understanding of the bulk properties of gases, liquids, solids, liquid crystals, colloids, and polymers. The abiding theme is that all these macroscopic material properties can be understood as the result of the competition between thermal energy and intermolecular or interatomic forces.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent reference for thermodynamics and kinetics.......1999-10-21
Very clear explanations and derivations of subjects such as Boltzmann distributions, critial points, thermal expansion, viscosity, etc. The maths isn't too hard, either!
Review by a undergraduate student of Tabor.......1997-02-01
Tabor examines the forces between atoms, and how their balance adds up to the world as we know it.
He uses math to clarify, which though strict, does not hinder him in keeping the story fascinating.
