    Book Description

Over the past five to ten years Central and East European (CEE) countries have undergone a radical transformation of their economies from state socialism to various forms of market capitalism. During this time employment ratios plummeted from dubious full employment' to levels equal or lower than in countries of comparable economic development. This transformation of labor markets has left in its wake a high and persistent rate of unemployment, implying that individuals still seek work despite a dramatic deterioration of their employment chances. At the same time, low participation is putting an unbearable social security burden on the active population as systemic dependency ratios have risen and are currently significantly above those of the OECD countries. Entry into Europe, with the associated adoption of standards for social security provisions, will further increase the fiscal burden on the active population unless the ratio of employment to population, and the tax base for social policies, is increased. This book looks at the nature of unemployment in the CEE countries. It then analyses the determinants of labor supply and demand to predict where market equilibrium should be in these economies. The authors conclude by looking at the role of policy, arriving at a set of proposals for enhancing labor supply in the region. These include: better integration between unemployment benefits and social assistance; the maintenance and development of active labor market programs, increased spending on general secondary education; and investment into the infrastructure of transportation. This comprehensive account of labor market issues facing the CEE countries will be of interest to everyone concerned with the economics of transition and economic policies in the region.

"Money Cometh" and alot of other "word" prosperity teachings are wiccan spells taught as bible based doctrine. With great similarities to Wiccan money spells, used by witches, how can ministers of today put their congregations under the obvious curse of witchcraft--->

1 out of 5 stars Abomination in the House of God.......2006-10-25

This book and the false teaching of the Prosperity Movement is an abomination and an insult to Christianity. Gullible "Christians" are taken for everything they've got. The false teachers who propogate this false doctrine are as unbiblical and corrupt as the false prophets of Ezekiel's day.

3 John 1:2-4 DOES NOT SPEAK OF MONETARY PROSPERITY FROM GOD!!!! It speaks to a general blessing spoken over someone. Prosperity does not always mean MONEY!!! Only in a corrupt greedy, money-hungry society like America could anything even remotely be believed. But this shows the corrupt nature of some materialistic heathen-minded "Christians".

    "Mayst prosper" ()
Lit., have a prosperous journey. From well, and a way. In this original sense, Rom_1:10!!!!!!! The word occurs only three times in the New Testament. See 1Co_16:2.

God is not your cosmic Santa Claus!!!!

These godless crooks are lying to you Christian!! Wake up and get away from them before they've taken you for everything you've got!!

And if you want to bring up Job and his prosperity...are you also willing to endure his same horrendous TRIAL in order that you may receive God's reward?? I hear these godless used car salemen always talking about the blessing, but they never talk about the fiery trial.

They are godless and will be stripped of everything they posess when they stand before a holy God.

Do you want to follow them??

    3 out of 5 stars Its ok.......2006-05-26

I agree on the point that Christians should not settle for poverty, because I do not believe that God wants his children in poverty. Read 3 John 1:2-4...but nor should they fall head over heels to be rich. We need a balance and I do not see a balance as far as most prosperity teachers are concerned.

The proper exegesis is not there...but it is highly important. My. Thompson used Psalms 35:27 which concludes: "Let the Lord be magnified, which hath pleasure in the Prosperity of his servant" But the hebrew for prosperity in this passage is shalom..and we all know that shalom means peace! It also means completeness, welfare...now to equate this with riches would mean to say that we need to be rich in order to live a peaceful life...money can do many things but it cannot bring peace.

We cannot just take words and use them to support our own ideas...we must look beyond the cosmetic and go deep within to draw out the true meaning...if we all did that there would not be differeing opinions as to what the word says....I will say however that i will not speak badly about Thompson or any other prosperity teachers...who am i to say what they can or cannot teach on. God will judge his servants. We just need to do what it says in Acts 17:11 - "receive the Word with all readiness of mind, and search the scriptures daily, whether these things are so."

Now I understand why I've seen so many checks with "money cometh" on them. It disturbs me that people look to God for monetary wealth. Look to God for spirtual wealth. For financial wealth, look to Clark Howard.

        Book Description

Why do so many people voluntarily consent to searches by have the police search their person or vehicle when they know that they are carrying contraband or evidence of illegal activity? Does everyone understand the Miranda warning? How well can people recognize a voice on tape? Can linguistic experts identify who wrote an anonymous threatening letter?

Speaking of Crime answers these questions and examines the complex role of language within our criminal justice system. Lawrence M. Solan and Peter M. Tiersma compile numerous cases, ranging from the Lindbergh kidnapping to the impeachment trial of Bill Clinton to the JonBenét Ramsey case, that provide real-life examples of how language functions in arrests, investigations, interrogations, confessions, and trials. In a clear and accessible style, Solan and Tiersma show how recent advances in the study of language can aid in understanding how legal problems arise and how they might be solved.

With compelling discussions current issues and controversies, this book is a provocative state-of-the-art survey that will be of enormous value to legal scholars and professionals throughout the criminal justice system.

2 out of 5 stars Conceptual Cemistry text review.......2005-05-01

Well, it looks like I'm giving yet another one of my college textbooks a less than stellar review. This particular book was the required text for Chemistry 1010 at my college. Extremely expensive is how I feel about this book, since unlike my intro Psych book, which cost just as much, I find this one to be both confusing and patronizing. I had a slave driver for a Honors Chem teacher in high school, so I expected Chemistry to be easy, since I later found out that in high school I had taken the equivalent of a Chemistry class required of college level Chemistry majors. My professor was fairly good. He made it a point of explaining all the math and all the other mumbo-jumbo in this text. He had to do that a lot. Why, you ask? Because, this book, I swear, was written for a sixth grader. It comes across as such, especially in the first few chapters, where they talk about atoms and molarity, elements and compounds. It isn't until the later chapters, when you get to learn about things I still cannot even spell, that the author finally becomes serious. But still, the weird jokes about the neutron who went to the bar, the pictures of the author's wife and family members strewn about, and the corny cartoon characters trying to make Chemistry equations "fun" are just that-sappy and VERY corny. I had to repeatedly look at the cover of the book to make sure I was not reading a child's Chemistry text. And, come the day of the final, most of my classmates are more than willing to get rid of this text, which for most of us has served us well as a paperweight. I didn't even get to use it for that-my roommate is a Chemistry major and had an even bigger Chemistry book to use for that purpose. I spent $102 on this thing that masquerades as a college level Chemistry text, but in reality reads like it was meant for an uneducated 12 year old. The vast majority of us in this class did not use this book. We had a fairly decent professor whose lectures proved far more useful than this text, althought his tests were quite confusing. This book has no real purpose. Save your money and look for the copy on reserve at the library. It is better than being reminded that in the scope of the author, that you are not worthy of being treated like a college level adult because you did not take the intro Chemistry class aimed at Chem majors. This book is horrible, and the worst part is that I only got $45 back for it at textbook buyback this last week. Ugh.

The book came in earlier than expected. However, the book was not near the description posted. It was said to be "Like New," but the textbook was quite worn in the corners and binding.

I'm currently a 10th grade high school student, and this book was great for me, simply great. Very clear, great diagrams, very helpful sample problems and reviews... it even has a laboratory safety manual, an a listing of the elements both on the table, and in alphabetical order!

5 out of 5 stars It is what it is.......2006-06-10

This book is everything it says it is. I am in school to be a chem teacher and P chem has been mind boggling. The many examples gets a person into thinking like a p chemists and this is invaluable when trying to set up the math problems in an acutal class. If you understand your Calc the math isn't the issue in passing p chem its setting up the math. This book is a must read for any under grad chemist. I am going to write the author this book is a master piece. Simple and to the point with lots of real world examples.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a low level intro course.......2006-04-21

This book does a great job at discribing the conceptual aspects of basic p.chem topics like thermodynaics, kinectics and photochemistry. Unfortuently it only breafly explaines the mathmatical aspects and in little detail, making the book unsutible for anythig except a low level class. The book also suffers from a severe lack of practice problems. If you only need to understad the basic concepts of p.chem this book cannot be beat, but if you need to know the nitty gritty mathmatical deatials you will be hurting at test time.

                              Book Description

This book is unique in occupying a gap between standard undergraduate texts and more advanced texts on quantum field theory. It covers a range of renormalization methods with a clear physical interpretation (and motivation), including mean-field theories and high-temperature and low-density expansions. It then proceeds by easy steps to the famous epsilon-expansion, ending up with the first-order corrections to critical exponents beyond mean-field theory. Nowadays there is widespread interest in applications of renormalization methods to various topics ranging over soft condensed matter, engineering dynamics, traffic queueing and fluctuations in the stock market. Hence macroscopic systems are also included, with particular emphasis on the archetypal problem of fluid turbulence. The book is also unique in making this material accessible to readers other than theoretical physicists, as it requires only the basic physics and mathematics which should be known to most scientists, engineers and mathematicians.
