Book Description
The peristence of European unemployment stands in striking contrast to the cyclical pattern of unemployment in the US. Many people attribute the rise in European unemployment to increased imbalances between the pattern of labour demand and supply - in other words, to greater mismatch, but existing mismatch indicators do not support this view. However, the obvious inference is not legitimate because the evidence is based on trended data, and thus gives rise to spurious statistical results. To get around the problem, the author uses the dynamic flow approach to structural unemployment and disaggregated data. The reader will find new results on "non-spurious" mismatch tendencies, occupational reallocation, the matching of apprentices, and the importance of matching and mobility for wage differentials.

The field of financial econometrics has exploded over the last decade This book represents an integration of theory, methods, and examples using the S-PLUS statistical modeling language and the S+FinMetrics module to facilitate the practice of financial econometrics. This is the first book to show the power of S-PLUS for the analysis of time series data. It is written for researchers and practitioners in the finance industry, academic researchers in economics and finance, and advanced MBA and graduate students in economics and finance. Readers are assumed to have a basic knowledge of S-PLUS and a solid grounding in basic statistics and time series concepts.
This Second Edition is updated to cover S+FinMetrics 2.0 and includes new chapters on copulas, nonlinear regime switching models, continuous-time financial models, generalized method of moments, semi-nonparametric conditional density models, and the efficient method of moments.
Eric Zivot is an associate professor and Gary Waterman Distinguished Scholar in the Economics Department, and adjunct associate professor of finance in the Business School at the University of Washington. He regularly teaches courses on econometric theory, financial econometrics and time series econometrics, and is the recipient of the Henry T. Buechel Award for Outstanding Teaching. He is an associate editor of Studies in Nonlinear Dynamics and Econometrics. He has published papers in the leading econometrics journals, including Econometrica, Econometric Theory, the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Econometrics, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
Jiahui Wang is an employee of Ronin Capital LLC. He received a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Washington in 1997. He has published in leading econometrics journals such as Econometrica and Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, and is the Principal Investigator of National Science Foundation SBIR grants. In 2002 Dr. Wang was selected as one of the "2000 Outstanding Scholars of the 21st Century" by International Biographical Centre.

Good summary of models and live examples.......2007-08-14
I side with Yin Luo: this book is a good mixture of basic theory and fairly complicated, real-life examples. Actually, it can even be used as a tool to refresh one's theoretical "model specification database" because it covers a wide range of many families of models in a single book. However, being mainly a S+FinMetrics manual, it doesn't go so far as to show how to make a choice among a few competing models. Apparently, one has to have a certain theoretical background before he/she can benefit from the undoubtedly great power of S+FinMetrics.
Great applied econometrics book, even without FinMetrics!.......2006-10-09
Zivot and Wang have done a phenomenal job of covering intermediate to advanced topics in econometrics along with the S programming language. Extensive literature reviews are coupled with robust examples and mathematics, and topped off with S code. I am a quantitative hedge fund manager, and I use the Open Source R package [..] and RMetrics [..]. I can adapt every single excercise in "Modeling Financial Time Series with S-PLUS" to use in R, and make use of them in my work. If I have one complaint it is that the book does not cover non-linear models like quantile regression or least squares, or optimization for much more than trivial two or three asset portfolios.
Deceptive Title.......2005-01-30
As other reviewers have mentioned, this book is useless without FinMetrics. It is merely a user manual for that package, and has hardly any intrinsic value on its own.

WITHOUT S+FinMetrics module.......2003-10-07
This book does NOT come with the S+FinMetrics module. This book contains reviews of advanced time series theory, however, without S+FinMetrics module some part of the book is not insightful. This book is also not of financilal econometrics because there is no financial theory. This is a very good time series book if it comes with S+FinMetrics module.

Until now there has been no summary or overview of the wide range of work contributing to critical legal studies, the movement that has aroused such a furor in the communities of law and political philosophy. This book outlines and evaluates the principal strands of critical legal studies, and achieves much more as well.
A good deal of the writing in critical legal studies has been devoted to laying bare the contradictions in liberal thought. There have been attacks and counterattacks on the liberal position and on the more conservative law and economics position. Now Mark Kelman demonstrates that any critique of law and economics is inextricably tied to a broader critique of liberalism.
There are three central contradictions in liberal thought: between a commitment to mechanically applicable rules and to standards that fluctuate with situations; between intrinsic individual values and the objective knowledge of ethical truths; and between free will and determinism. Kelman shows us the pervasiveness of these contradictions in legal doctrine; their connection to broader political theory and to visions of human nature; and, finally, the degree to which mainstream thought tends to privilege certain of these commitments over others.
The author also analyzes two of the most significant components of jurisprudence today the law and economics discipline and the legal process school. He concludes with a lively discussion of the role of law generally and of "cognitive legitimation," or the ways in which legal thought can make the unnecessary, the contingent, and the unjust seem natural, inevitable, and fair.

Kelman's confusing writing style takes away from his credibility as does his dubious logic. In my view, Kelman's text provides a strong argument AGAINST the Crit movement and FOR the rule of law and rational legal thought.

I bet there are only 5 people in the world who have read this book from cover to cover. I am certainly not one of them. I was interested in the subject of critical legal studies--until I tried to read this book. The prose is so turgid, so dense, so infuriatingly incomprehensible, that reading a single sentence is like getting hit in the head with a hammer. I choose the following sentence entirely at random (honest): "There is a strong presumption of legislative validity in cases in which excluded (generally racial) minorities are unaffected, given both the assumption that indirect or representaive democracy is the proper solution to the problem of summing and registering the welfare-seeking desires of individuals and the assumption that existing legislatures come reasonably close to meeting the ideals of representative democracy." p. 191. Got that? I thought so. I even had to leave out of the sentence one of Kelman's favorite devices: the italicized word. There's hardly a sentence without one or more of them, and this constant barrage of emphasis requires the reader to stop, reread the sentence with the recommended emphasis, and continue. What you soon discover, however, is that this doesn't make the prose any clearer; indeed, it only makes reading this book that much more painful. Oh, and to the academics who smugly smile at this review and say to themselves (or even out loud), "Well, you [with your little brain] just don't get it, do you?" I respond as follows: good simple prose and intellectual content are not mutually exclusive. (E.g. Ronald Dworkin.)

This book's pages are so thin they rip at almost every turn of the page. The publisher took a stab at trying to keep college students from reselling their books by making this one rip to shreds as they use it. This item has to be put in a three ring binder. Dont buy this version get the bound version.

This book was required for one of my college classes. It provides the same information that is taught in high school but in a much better format. I liked this book so much I have kept it for my personal library (and no I'm not some math/physics freak).

Basic physics book packed with information, diagrams, photos, exercises and some answers at the back of the book to make sure you are on track. Interesting text because it touches on how physics relates to almost everything.
