Most impressive extension of the term.......2004-02-17

The term financial engineering is appearing increasingly in the title of various works. What it actually means remains nebulous, for even natural sciences and engineering remain irresolvable at their respective cores. This is evidently addressing another boon of the digital age, where equations and approximations can be done both automatically, and with extreme rapidity. It is only natural for the advantages of this to trickle into research of finance and economics, only now it is becoming a steady stream, and, with the inclusion of this work, a most sound one at that.

It is inferred that the author views this phrase, "financial engineering," as the level of control over precision of computation, and then the resulting accuracy of projected results (with an occasional forecast of unanticipated outcome). His credentials validate this as well.

The tools utilized include the complete discipline of algorithmics, and numerous branches of mathematics, along with tools assisting with and automating graphics and formatting, such as Latex and Mathematica, all channelled into this most profitable and competitive field of finance.

The approach for most sections begins with a brief discussion of motivation, typically condensed to one or a few paragraphs, followed by an equation representing an historical approach to the problem. This is followed by one or more expanded sections building algorithms, expressed in mathematics and pseudocode, as well as plots of typical results. The section then concludes with a broader discussion of how computation and finance become intertwined through this particular application. The author is extremely well versed in both. There are numerous exercises as well.

The book has the look and feel of an adept computer scientist, applying his honed skills to the financial realm. The typesetting is extremely well done, and even for sections initially unfamiliar, the reader feels confident and motivated to become fluent in time. Many of the exercises have solutions provided in an appendix.

At the time of its original publish date the book was unique in the field due to its approach and concise depth of mathematics, all available from a single resource. The author clearly exerted an extraordinary amount of time and energy to producing this work, and each section attests to this meticulous attention detail.

This work is highly-recommended as a reference, for a plethora of well-constructed algorithms in pseudocode are provided; Java examples are also provided via a website. Some considerable level of sophistication in topics typically relegated to computer science and mathematics are required, for which the intrepid reader can find additional resources. When time and motivation are sufficient, there is a wealth of mathematically sound information, providing depth of understanding and a mature foundation to build upon just what financial engineering means.

The text covers quite a broad range of topics. It assumes that the reader has a fairly good grasp of statistics and mathematics (senior undergraduate level). Introductory financial material reads ok. The algorithmic approach is useful and so are the answers to select problems. However, some could find the material too tightly packed.

clear, interesting casebook that reads like a novel.......1999-03-31

Most legal casebooks are excrutiating to read. This is an exception. The descriptions of the payment systems are clear and understandable. The problems are interesting and illustrate the important points of the chapters in an enjoyable manner. The best casebook in 2 1/2 years of law school!

To obtain the best attainable end-use stability of a wooden product it is essential to have information on the movement and shrinkage that may be expected. In this context, it is essential when drying timber to choose an accurate drying schedule in relation to the shrinkage figures and the risk of deformation. Generally, many timber properties are closely related to the density and the nominal specific gravity. With the given detailed information (per wood species), the water content (amount of evaporation and energy in timber drying) or the void volume (in case of impregnation, in order to estimate the maximum uptake of a liquid) in the wood can be calculated. The physical properties of 145 commercial timbers have been determined in the past decades. They comprise the shrinkage and swelling values, equilibrium moisture content, hysteresis, density and nominal specific gravity, including the variation coefficients of these values. The shrinkage, swelling and hysteresis are presented in graphic form; the other information in tabular form. Additional information about some other properties of physical nature has been added, e.g. gluelam products and rattan.

This book is P. W. Anderson's long-awaited full presentation of his theory of high-T c superconductivity in the cuprates. He realized that this striking new phenomenon needed for its explanation not just a new mechanism or "gimmick" but a radical reworking of the electronic theory of metals, especially those of low dimension. The many fundamentally new ideas that are first fully presented here will require a rewriting of the textbooks of many-body theory, which may take decades. The book incorporates full discussions of the experimental situation in these complex materials, both the normal and the superconducting states. The latest advances are contained in a selection of re-and pre-prints of recent work by Anderson and collaborators.

The fundamental insight contained in the book is that the conditions for validity of the renormalized quasiparticle theory of metals ("Fermi Liquid Theory") are much more restrictive than had been thought, and are not satisfied in the CuO 2 planes of high-T c materials (among, probably, many other examples). This requires a new state of matter to be invented, new transport theories, and new mechanisms for superconductivity. This book will supersede all theoretical discussions of superconductivity that are now available in book form.

A Radical Excursion into Extreme Empiricism.......2002-05-02

For the serious James scholar, this book is indispensible. For those of you who are not too familiar with Jame's ideas and their background, this book is probably too much - and too boring at that. Even for scholars of epistemology, this book can be rather frustrating. Originally written for his grad students at Harvard, the book lacks much in the way of context, and it is completely theoretical. Furthermore, it is filled with many untranslated passages, from German to Latin. I gave the book four stars because it could use some editing. This is the modern era: Latin is dead - even for the most serious philosopher - and German is no longer the language of Philosophy. The passages should be translated, and some of the more abstract essays should come with introductions. That said, the book is still a valuable contribution to empirical epistemology, laying out James of view of "radical empiricism" - where subjects and objects collide. Indeed, the book itself is a pure experience!
