massive corruption.......2007-09-13
Sometimes, a plentitude of oil can be a drag on a nation. Lewis makes an interesting analysis of Indonesia and Nigeria. Both having vast populations and much oil and gas. But the similarities go further, unfortunately. Both also endured decades of autocratic and corrupt rule. The corruption often driven by the ability to sell oil on international markets, for hard currency. The book details how much of this precious revenue went astray. Instead of being spent on raising the parlous living standards of most citizens.
Rather, both countries had well-connected elites. Ensconced in power. And often related to the presidents. Some corruption was inevitable. But the book is a sorry delineation of splendiferous diversions. Billions of dollars squandered or just disappeared out of these countries.

Business and Democracy promote one another.......2005-05-03
"What we are arguing is not that democracy is the inevitable outcome of successful capitalist development, but that such development is a necessary prerequisite of democracy..... We are also saying that authoritative regimes rarely meet the conditions under which business can optimally flourish." In the book, Business and Democracy, Cohabitation or Contradiction?, edited by Ann Bernstein and Peter L. Berger, this statement is well proven: business and democracy do not work to promote one another. Rather, the externalities/pressures of one are a benefit to the other. The editors pull numerous short articles together to support their thesis and then use examples of several developing or transitioning countries in the last half century. In the short term, business can thrive in an authoritative regime but will inevitably lead to "Crony Capitalism". However, eventually pressures for reform and independence will weaken the state ruling institution. In contrast, democracies have continued to be successful when a free market system was already established. The editors have made an excellent case for the cohabitation of Business and Democracy. Business Associations and the thickening of civil society are in the best interests of democracy and visa versa. It allows for a reduced size of government, eliminates excessive taxes that discourage investment, and creates stability. Government still has control with the ability to take power away from the association, but the alternative would be a large expensive government and "Crony Capitalism." It is in the best interest of all society for government and business to work together. The increase of civil liberties and the standard of living are the externalities we all gain from the cohabitation of Business and Democracy.
This book is a must read for those who wish to better understand the role of business and the development of the third world. I would also recommend this book to anyone who wishes to discourage a capitalist system.

Book Description
The interconnectedness of the global environment and finiteness of the earth's natural resources require an increased understanding of environmental and natural-resource policy and politics in countries around the world. This is especially true of industrializing countries where widespread ecological disturbances and rapid exploitation of natural resources are taking place. Ecological Policy and Politics in Developing Countries provides an in-depth study of ecological problems, policies, and politics in ten major industrializing countries. Each chapter discusses the increasingly international context of domestic environmental policies and explores some of the powerful interests and institutional forces that contribute to ecological problems and shape the policies to deal with them in each country. The authors identify some of the major impediments to both well-designed environmental policies and their effective implementation. The ten countries included here--the Czech Republic, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Taiwan, Thailand, Slovakia, and Venezuela--cover five continents, over half of the world's population and most of the major industrializing countries.

Small Countries for a Small Reader.......2000-09-09
As a small person (4'10"), I have always had a fondness for small countries. As a geographer, I enjoy knowing about places most people have never heard of. And as a veteran armchair traveller... Well, this book could hardly miss with me. Edward Fox sets out to explore the mysteries of royalty by visiting a half-dozen small, non-European kingdoms and attempting to meet their respective kings, with varying success. Dressed in his official king-meeting costume of a blue Brooks Brothers suit and tie, Fox meets with royal responses that cover the spectrum: casual affability in Tonga, fierce hostility in Swaziland, democratic divinity on Java. Meeting King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV of Tonga was a snap. Fox simply made an appointment for an interview. He could also observe the King on His Majesty's daily royal bicycle ride cum motorcade. On the other hand, he spent weeks chasing after Sultan Qaboos of Oman as the King made tours and military inspections up and down his nation. Finally Fox gave up hope of an interview, contenting himself with a bow and a limp handshake in a receiving line. Fox met a fair number of Yourba kings, of whom there are roughly 700 in all of Nigeria. Having lost their temporal power to the central government, they are primarily leaders of traditional Yourba religion. Yet kings are usually chosen on the basis of wealth and professional background, not for their knowledge of and belief in these traditions. The Ataoja of Oshogbo was a well-educated, devout Muslim, and thus found himself caught in a serious spiritual dilemma. Besides his own religious duties, his daughter was required by tradition to be high priestess of Oshun, the Yourba Venus, and preside at the goddess's annual festival. Another Royal Annoyance was an Austrian sculptress and sincere devotee of the Yourba gods who, during her 40-year residence in Oshogbo has made the town the cultural capital of Yourba, turned Oshun's grove into a sculpture garden, and erected (if you'll pardon the expression) an ithyphallic statue on the palace grounds. Not the sort of decoration a pious Muslim usually wants to see in his front yard. A monarch's lot is not a happy one! Swaziland turned out to be downright hostile. On his request for an interview, Fox was told, "I have just been in England. I didn't see the Queen Mother. Do you think I could have seen the Queen Mother just like that?" The author's only sight of King Mswati II was at the performance of a long, boring public ritual ("Take your hands out of your pockets and stand still!" he was scolded after about two hours). But he did manage to meet Maja II, king of the Mamba clan, whose ancestor was given royal title and dignity by Mswati II's ancestor in 1819. Most Swazis don't know he exists, and the Mamba kingship is omitted from all official Swazi histories. Fox met Maja II at His Anonomyous Majesty's butcher shop, where they had a chat and a smoke, and Fox took a photo of the King posing beside his pickup truck. Fox's last royal pilgrimage was to the island of Java and Hamengkubuwono X, Sultan of Yogyakarta, whose kingship has become entirely spiritual. As a disciple hoping to be accepted by a guru, Fox knew his quest would require patience. He moved into a hotel where no one spoke English, took no tourist excursions, bought no souvenirs, and settled down to read "War and Peace" while waiting for his contacts to turn something up. Step by step, contact by contact, Fox closed in on his goal: a highly formal interview, with interpreter, in which the Sultan was as democratic as he could manage. He wasn't exactly Maja II with his pickup, but he went so far as to acknowledge and show interest in Fox's gift, which is more than the cycling Taufa'ahau of Tonga did. Our last glimpse of Hamengkubuwono X is of His Majesty enthusiastically playing soccer in the rain, and afterward handing out gifts of soccer balls and jerseys to his subjects and fellow-players.
Book Description
This volume analyzes and compares economic growth in Nigeria and Indonesia during the period from 1950 to 1985, addressing questions as to why one country was so much more successful than the other. Providing some surprising answers for those who believed that the divergence would be found in deeply rooted, long term trends, the authors also offer insight into what has become a reversal of fortune in the late 1990's, as Indonesia has experienced decline, and the Nigerian economy has stabilized.

Product Description
Religion is often seen as the principal cause of wars, conflicts and clashes between people around the world. Many people believe that the world would be a better and more peaceful place without religion. This book analyses and compares specific conflicts and peace building efforts between Christians and Muslims in Denmark, Indonesia and Nigeria, and attempts to determine the role of religion in each of these situations. It then shares insights on how effective bridges can be built in contexts such as these. A study team, sponsored by the Lutheran World Federation (Department for Theology and Studies), consisting of Christians and Muslims from Denmark, Indonesia and Nigeria, visited select sites in these countries between 2003 and 2005. Their observations, interviews, and discussions with relevant persons in these countries become the core of this book.

Book Description
The interactions between viruses and the cells they infect include the virus control of cellular functions to their advantage. The cell counteracts with a defensive immune system and stress responses. Both sides of this struggle include modifications in the cell death program that will be crucial for the infection outcome. In this book, molecular pathways regulated by viral genes and their role in the pathogenesis of infection are analysed in different viral models. It also includes a didactic update of known signaling pathways in apoptosis and their role in normal and infected cells. Special emphasis was given to molecular pathways underlying viral transformation and oncogenesis and to the perspectives in cancer gene therapy. Particular cell types in apoptosis such as neuronal cells and lymphoid cell death are also emphasized.
This book is designed to give an in-depth update of viral gene interaction with regulation pathways in apoptosis for scientists and researchers in the fields of molecular biology, virology, cell biology, oncology, and neurobiology.
Book Description
This graduate-level book presents a self-contained exposition of fundamental topics in modern equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics. The text follows a balanced approach between the macroscopic (thermodynamic) and microscopic (statistical) points of view. One notable feature is the large number of problems. Simple applications are given in 71 exercises, while more elaborate challenges are contained in 47 problems, some of which are useful for student projects.
Customer Reviews:
A worth-while advanced book........2006-10-12
This is an advanced book as stated at the end of the backcover. I think the reader should have a good background and read other stat mech books concurrently to achieve the materials in this one. Of course, this is not quite self-contained, since stat mech is a very vast and detailed subject, but it has some pros. Most of theorems therein are very rigorous so that one can check with other books and learn things in more general sense. Most of the topics are very well-explained and nicely illustrative, e.g. Fig.2.4 for the time-reversal invariance concerning the reversibility or irreversibility of the system. Furthermore, it explains the concept of the pair correlation function very well from p.128-135, whereas I didn't get very much from Plischke on this topic even though in that book there is an interesting topic not contained in this one, say perturbation treatment of the pair correlation, and it treats some topics such as dilute Bose gas and Superconductivity very well. I use Le Bellac to prepare lecture notes on graduate stat mech together with some other books like Kubo, Greiner,Plischke, etc. Though pretty old, Kubo is a great book that one can learn from the problems and solutions. Pathria treats almost all interesting areas but rarely goes into details , just quotes the journals. To be effective, use LeBellac togetrher with other textbook you can get along with, you'll find this book fantastic.
Disappointed.......2006-03-07
I do not recommend this book at all. It covers a lot of materials but only very briefly. The book simply lists basic concepts and DOES NOT develop them from a set of well defined principles. So, if you don't know the materials, this is NOT a book to learn them from. On the other hand, if you already know the materials, then, you'll see that their presentation lacks clarity. In short, this is a book written without a definite view point, and hence a well conceived structure.
Book Description
Classic monograph treats the irreversible processes and phenomena of thermodynamics: non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Covers statistical foundations and applications of the field with special chapters on fluctuation theory, theory of stochastic processes, kinetic theory of gases, derivation of the Onsager reciprocal relations, more. 4 black-and-white illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Solid, comprehensive.......1999-12-10
Systematic and comprehensive introduction to linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics. After an extensive description of the fundamentals, a variety of examples is given. As the authors indicate in their preface, the book only deals with linear NET, which means that the more exciting modern examples of non-linear NET are not covered. This does not mean, however, that this book would be obsolete; a lot of physics happens to be linear, and the classics of linear NET (Wiener-Khinchine, Onsager) are certainly worth studying. I would even say, that linear NET should first be appreciated before venturing in the more modern aspect of non-linear NET.
A classic reference text.......1999-04-22
Not meant as a modern textbook, but highly useful for anyone who's already somewhat familiar with N.E.T. This book has a certain historical value, and it is rather obligatory for people who work with N.E.T. and/or are highly interested in it. Mathematically, it is quite rigorous. Knowledge of fluid dynamics, tensor calculus and other rather advanced mathematical concepts is definitely helpful, but not outright necessary.
You will find the title of this book in many 'further reading' lists. That alone is proof enough that this is a book worth having.
Book Description
The book aims to give an overview of the previous Sitges Conferences, which have been held during the last 25 years, with special emphasis on topics related to non-equilibrium phenomena. It includes review articles and articles dealing with new trends in the subject, written by scientists who have played an important role in the development of this area. The book is intended as a commemorative edition of the Sitges Conferences. Graduate students of physics and researchers will find this a stimulating account of the development of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics in the last years, covering a wide scope of topics: kinetic theory, hydrodynamics, fluctuation phenomena and stochastic processes, relaxation phenomena, kinetics of phase transitions, growth kinetics, and so on.

Book Description
Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the kinetic approach to dynamic many-body problems. Modern kinetic theory offers a unifying theoretical framework within which a great variety of seemingly unrelated systems can be explored in a coherent way. Kinetic methods are currently being applied in such areas as the dynamics of colloidal suspensions, granular material flow, electron transport in mesoscopic systems, the calculation of Lyapunov exponents and other properties of classical many-body systems characterised by chaotic behaviour. The present work focuses on Brownian motion, dynamical systems, granular flows, and quantum kinetic theory.

Unique.......2002-03-08
This book indeed is characterized by an unusual and very rare selection of topics. It is fairly mathematically rigorous, and not intendeed for a beginner. A reasonable mastery of graduate level theoretical physics is required, and I personally believe that the mathematical rigor in this book is absolutely necessary, and is by all means not a downside. This book is a 'must-have' for anyone interested in quantum transport.
Great subject matter, but quite unreadable.......1999-04-22
Being an expert in a given field is one thing. Being able to express your expertise in a book that will appeal to people is quite another thing. Obviously, few people share Kreuzer's knowledge of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. This book underscores that statement rather well: only specialists in mathematical physics will be able to read and grasp its subject matter. This is most unfortunate, since Kreuzer's choice of things to include in the book is excellent. Extensive and rigorous expositions about key phenomena like Benard convection are coupled to a careful and even more rigorous treatment of the statistical foundations of N.E.T. Given the importance of topics like these, it really is unfortunate that only a handful of people will actually learn something from this well-intended book.

Book Description
One pithy joke encapsulates a world of knowledge about a culture. Because humor plays with the most deeply seated cultural assumptions, it makes visible areas of unacknowledged attitudes and behaviors in private realms. In this groundbreaking study, through the content analysis of over 600 jokes, proverbs, sayings, and popular rhymes, Emil A. Draitser offers an insider's view on the sociological and psychological functions of Russian sexual folklore and the way it reflects male/female relationships. Draitser leaves no dirty joke untold as he examines such taboo subjects as adultery, impotence, and gender and violence. This timely study sheds light on Russian popular culture and the nature of sexual humor everywhere.
