Extremely readable. One could read this book in a single sitting and get a great jumpstart to an understanding of fixed income markets - the why and the how.

Wiseman has an engaging style of writing which prevents the stifled yawns normally associated with reading this genre, and keeps one turning the pages...

The book nicely covers the fundamental theory of why there exists a fixed income market, then turns to the players and discusses what they do, and finally covers some of the fundamental trading strategies and math employed to turn a buck.

i could not put this book down.......2001-12-10

i found this book very well written. It provides detail and yet covers that what it says it does. I find that Wiseman explains concepts in a verystraight forward way. Although i had to pause to eat and think about some of the financial products discussed such as "par yields". I found I was able to understand the book. The book contains some of the trader jargon and a outline of the players involved in the market. I think that anyone who wants to something with securities or trading should read this, before/during/after an intership. As the english say "Wiseman" is the dogs ballocks!! get this book!

I bought the paperback version of this book at a meeting for 36 $US. It has two great merits: the balance of breadth and depth in coverage is right, and the price is right. Since the table of contents is posted on this site, the reader can judge relevance for his or her self. In my view this book is a great aid getting started in a project in applied insect physiological or population ecology. It also is very useful in making the most of your trips to a research library if the nearest one happens to be 2 or 3 hours from you.

Selenium contamination in the aquatic environment can produce severe toxic effects to fish. The mammalian sulfhydryl-containing enzyme, @d-aminolevulinate dehydratase (@d-ALA-D), is inhibited after exposure to organic and inorganic forms of selenium. In the present study, the inhibitory effect of (PhSe)"2, (BuSe)"2, and Na"2SeO"3 on the activity of fish hepatic and gill @d-ALA-D was investigated and compared with the rat liver enzyme. Results indicated that @d-ALA-D activity varied considerably depending on the tissue, selenium form, and species considered. For fish (liver and gill), the IC"5"0 values for @d-ALA-D inhibition by (PhSe)"2, (BuSe)"2, and Na"2SeO"3 were 274 and 76, 985 and 693, and 386 and 902@mM, respectively. For rat liver these values were 7, 10, and 5@mM, respectively. In contrast, fish and rat subcellular fractions similarly increased the oxidative effect of (PhSe)"2 toward sulfhydryl groups from DTT. These catalytic properties of subcellular fractions from fish and rat liver were abolished by heat treatment. Taking into account that aquatic organisms can be in contact with higher concentrations of selenium for longer periods of time and accumulate more selenium than terrestrial animals, it is reasonable to suppose that fish @d-ALA-D can be a potential target for organic and inorganic selenium forms present in aquatic contaminated environments. From an ecotoxicological point of view, our results suggest a link between selenium-induced anemia signs in fish and the sensitivity of fish @d-ALA-D to selenium in natural habitats.

Selenium possesses interesting chemical, biochemical and geochemical behaviors. However, studies of its photochemical properties in aqueous systems are scarce. A better understanding of these phenomena is of great importance for further application of such properties to selenium speciation. In this work, the photochemical behavior of selenium and some of its organic compounds have been systematically studied in various aqueous matrices under UV irradiation at 300nm. It was observed that the photochemical oxidation rate of Se(IV) to Se(VI) was greatly enhanced in the presence of HN0"3 at >=1x10^-^3M, but not by NaNO"3. However this photo-oxidation could be inhibited by the presence of Cl^-. Under UV irradiation, organoselenium compounds went through two successive photochemical reactions in pure water: a direct photolysis (photo-cleavage) followed by a photo-oxidation to form Se(VI). These two steps could also be greatly accelerated in presence of NO"3^- although the second step required an acidic condition. The photo cleavage rates varied from one organic compound to another and 10-fold differences were observed. Similarly to Se(IV), the further oxidation to Se(VI) could be prevented by Cl^- for all studied organoselenium compounds. Detailed reaction mechanisms involving OH radicals are proposed to explain Se photochemical behaviors in different matrices. s.

[A review of the 4th Edition, 2003.]
This book studies complexity and nonlinearity across a diverse range of applications. Much of the book revolves around organic evolution and the evolution of a sentient mind. And how complexity analysis might aid in the understanding of these fields. Not the least in devising deeper forms of artificial intelligence.

So intriguing techniques like cellular automata and neural networks are studied. There is a fair amount of speculation as to how these and other topics might ultimately relate to sentience or consciousness. But the musings are grounded in solid science. Like that of a Hopfield system or a Boltzmann machine. This 4th edition is a good reflection of the boundaries of our knowledge.

Full but turgid catalogue of complexity phenomena.......1998-02-25

This book is an extremely well-informed cataloguing of the many areas of human experience in which self-organisation and complexity phenomena play an important role. However the writer's style becomes very heavy as a result of transferring German constructions into English - so much so that I was forced to skim read many sections.
