Book Description
It was bad enough when popular offensive line coach Joe Moore sued the University of Notre Dame for age discriminationbut matters got much worse when the lawsuit uncovered disquieting evidence of unethical and inappropriate conduct in a football program widely regarded as a model of probity.
This is the dramatic story of that explosive lawsuit, which tarnished Notre Dame's burnished football image: the winner of eleven national titles; the home of legends Knute Rockne, the Gipper and the Four Horsemen; the subject of innumerable books and filmsNotre Dame football has been idealized as everything that is good and right about American sports competition and, indeed, about America itself.
This riveting story begins in November 1996, when Bob Davie is hired as head coach to replace the beloved Lou Holtz. In one of his firstand most fatefulexecutive decisions, Davie fires 64-year-old Joe Moore becauseas Davie puts ithe needs someone younger for the job.
Attorney Rick Lieberman takes on Joe Moore's case and in this absorbing book he describes the trial and the enormous tensions to which litigants like Joe Moore are subject. This is a David and Goliath story in which the Notre Dame attorneys attempt to destroy Joe Moore's reputation as both a coach and a man. In the process, Davie's own background comes under close scrutiny as a reporter's investigation reveals some damning evidence.
And as the trial proceeds, Notre Dame's football program is shown to be rife with legal improprieties and inappropriate behavior involving both coaches and administrators.
Anyone interested in sports, in the law, in stories of blatant injusticeand in Notre Damewill find Personal Foul a fascinating, revealing and memorable read.
Customer Reviews:
Poorly written, but even more poorly litigated by Notre Dame........2005-11-22
Coach Moore is another in a long line of legends to coach under the Golden Dome. Unfortunately, Bob Davie is another in a shorter line of terrible head coaches hired by the Fighting Irish. As for the book, the author (and Moore's lawyer) would have you believe this is a tale of David vs. Goliath in the courtroom, and that his brilliant legal acumen brought the Notre Dame empire to his knees. Truth be told, a first-year law student could have won this case, and Notre Dame's legal department should be ashamed for ever letting this case go to trial. Bob Davie ADMITTED in public, to the Notre Dame football team and others, that Coach Moore's age had something to do with his termination. You don't need Clarence Darrow to tell you that is age discrimination, my friends, and only the arrogance (or perhaps stupidity) of the then-administration at Notre Dame let this case go to trial. If you hate Notre Dame, maybe you'll find pleasure in their bungling of this matter. In fact, had Notre Dame not been the Defendant, nobody would think twice about reading this book. There are pleny of better written and more interesting books on the legal system out there. Oh, and Joe Paterno coaches at Penn St. by the way...
A Good First Pass At A Difficult Subject.......2002-10-25
I agree with those reviewers who have praised this as a good read. But it is no more than a "war story," and would have benefited from better editing and been more widely and profitably read as a magazine article. To deserve a book, the author should have reflected on the wisdom of the law which he practices, not only on behalf of plaintiffs but defendants as well. Why should those over 40 deserve the same protection as those who suffer racial, gender, or handicap discrimination? All of us grow old, and while that may not be fair and may affect each of us in different ways, can we as a society want or afford to be swamped with litigation and all its attendant stress and cost to argue the issue in a myriad of cases? Should the next generation be put on hold in the meanwhile? Perhaps the only lesson of this book is that Head Coach Davie must not have worn a helmet in his playing days. Otherwise, he would never have made any reference to age, but fired the plaintiff without explanation, or by simply saying that he wanted to hire his own coaching assistants.
...Bob Davie ..........2002-10-19
... Coach Moore is a simple and straightforward man who was thrown under the bus by his friend Davie after Davie maneuvered his former head coach Lou Holtz in front of that same bus. The reader learns of Davie's scandal ridden past and how the University looked the other way and even used its power to fight Coach Moore despite being totally in the wrong. ... An enlightening look at the dark side of an egomaniac...and an instiutution...that backed him.
The true story of a volatile lawsuit.......2002-03-26
Personal Foul: Coach Joe Moore vs. The University Of Notre Dame by Richard Lieberman is the true story of a volatile lawsuit that coach Joe Moore filed against the University of Notre Dame for age discrimination. From this suit came evidence of pervasive unethical conduct in a university football program that had formerly been given the highest regard. Commanding the reader's full attention, Personal Foul is a compelling and revealing exposé into the tangled and often dark complexity of human nature in general, and college football in particular. Highly recommended reading for college football fans in general, and University of Notre Dame alumni in particular.
Personal Foul.......2001-11-09
I couldn't put the book down. At first I was skeptical about whether or not the topic would appeal to me in that it is sports-related and about law. I'm not a sports enthusiast nor lawyer. But that was of no consequence. The book was riveting on another level: its narrative style. So if you like a good read, you'll love this book!
Book Description
One of the financial world's most respected experts on the psychology of risk provides a revolutionary risk management model
Over the past three decades investors have adopted all varieties of complex quantitative systems for quantifying and managing risk. Yet, sophisticated investors and money managers continue to suffer record losses in today's increasingly volatile markets. This book bridges the gap between investor psychology and quantitative risk management with a revolutionary risk management program that virtually any trader or investor can easily adapt to their goals and personalities. Using numerous fascinating real-life case studies, Dr. Kiev illustrates the various psychological and emotional traps to which even the savviest investors can fall victim. He develops a dynamic new risk management model that combines quantitative models and money management techniques. He also provides rigorous guidelines that will help readers answer such crucial questions as: How much should I trade? How much risk can I handle? and When should I get out?

Good for Short Term Traders, but..........2003-04-12
Kiev's thesis rests upon the premise of setting profit goals and then trying to hit them. The idea is that you will be compelled to refine everthing about your trading and put away all excuses in order to reach this goal -- a sort of goal as catalyst for improvement theory. While this seems like good advice I am afraid that for longer term traders it runs headlong into the "only take what the market gives you" truism. If I set a goal of $10,000 per month, what do I do when the market goes nowhere for four weeks? You guessed it, I would try to force things. Not good. So unless you are willing to accept the thesis of setting specific profit goals you won't gain that much from this book. A much better treatment of general trading psychology can be found in Mark Douglas' "Trading in the Zone".
Fast read; informative and helpful. Kiev's best.......2002-08-06
This was definitely Kiev's best book yet. What made the difference between it and Trading to Win was that it was actually helpful and laid out a course of action. Trading to win was chockful of examples but you were unsure of how you fit into it.
The book is full of little tests to determine what type of trader you are. Unfortunately he is not big on advice you sorta figure that out yourself after reading so many pages of what's your best course of action.
The downside to the book though is the Master Trader section which sorta drones on.
Still his best.
homerun.......2002-06-04
....another 5* piece created by Dr. Kiev. The Psychology of Risk is an excellent tool to improve and build on one's trading technique. whether a novice or an expert, psychology of risk is a must read for all levels...
A good read and I am a better money maker because of it........2002-06-04
This book isn't just applicable to traders. Fundamental, research driven investors will find the focus on risk management and risk taking equally helpful. The discussion of how an investor's emotions and tendancies can interfere with a profitable strategy is unique to Dr. Kiev's work and contradicts the old maxim of "don't let emotions affect your decisions." Emotions are part of everyday life and we have to find ways to benefit from them, not be hurt by them. I found Dr.Kiev's use of trading examples particularly helpful in helping me to identfy when my emotions are interferring with my strategy. More importantly, he provides tools and guidance that can help the reader improve their stock picking and portfolio management performance.
An Important Read All Traders.......2002-05-20
I found this book to be quite unusual. If you understand what Dr. Kiev is saying, you will find that you only have one decision to make, and that is to commit to a result. In a direct fashion, Dr. Kiev shows a committed trader how to move forward in a focused way, how to find the resources needed for success, how to evaluate progress and how to stay on track to reach a goal. Each chapter includes transcriptions of conversations with traders who are experiencing difficulties "along the way". I found that I shared many of the characteristics of these traders. The commentary that followed each vignette seems to provide a range of emotional "tools" that the trader can use whenever he/she feels besieged by the markets. One of the most important issues covered in the book is the ability to execute, to do what you know is right, and to stay in the trade without succumbing to emotion. This point alone would have saved me thousands of dollars (and a lot of emotional turmoil) in the last several years. Dr. Kiev's book is an invaluable resource to traders at every stage of their journey.

Book Description
China's loss of economic, technical, and cultural supremacy after the Song Dynasty (A.D. 960-1279) has produced one of the greatest enigmas of world history. Why did China fail to undergo an industrial revolution? Explanations relate to deficiencies of Chinese cultural values, social structure, class system, bureaucracy, and technology. This volume examines the subject of technological development, particularly agricultural development, in order to evaluate whether China suffered all-round technological stagnation. Using the example of the nongshu, or agricultural book, the author also examines the role of Chinese values, social structure, class structure, and bureaucracy in the accumulation, preservation, diffusion, promotion, and recovery of knowledge. Nongshu formed an organic part of Chinese agriculture and thus of Chinese economic history. Thus examination of the nongshu phenomenon leads to new insights into the sociopolitical structure and long-term economic development of pre-modern China. The examination also shows that Chinese technology in agriculture, the leading sector of the economy, did not completely stagnate.

Book Description
Charles Stevens, a prominent neurobiologist who originally trained as a biophysicist (with George Uhlenbeck and Mark Kac), wrote this book almost by accident. Each summer he found himself reviewing key areas of physics that he had once known and understood well, for use in his present biological research. Since there was no book, he created his own set of notes, which formed the basis for this brief, clear, and self-contained summary of the basic theoretical structures of classical mechanics, electricity and magnetism, quantum mechanics, statistical physics, special relativity, and quantum field theory.
The Six Core Theories of Modern Physics can be used by advanced undergraduates or beginning graduate students as a supplement to the standard texts or for an uncluttered, succinct review of the key areas. Professionals in such quantitative sciences as chemistry, engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, and biophysics who need to brush up on the essentials of a particular area will find most of the required background material, including the mathematics.

Sloppy if not downright wrong.......2006-01-23
I bought this for half price from a used bookstore (they had several copies) so I should've been warned. Within a few pages of starting this book, in a section of vector algebra, the author states that all vectors in an orthonormal basis are eigenvectors of all unitary operators. That's a ludicrous statement that is trivially wrong. Being a bit afraid that I might be led astray when reading sections on material I didn't already know, I checked the web for other mentions of this book. The only website I found (besides the publishers) was one hosting a lengthy errata for the book, full of corrections to sloppy mistakes in this book. Warning number two. Here it is (you'll need it):
w3.pppl.gov/~hammett/talks/ 2001/core-theories-errata.pdf
I think the idea behind this book is great, and I haven't found anything yet as aggregious as the mistatement about unitary transforms. But beware. This isn't a book by a physicist, and it shows.
Great companion for learning QFT........2003-06-11
I am self-studying QFT and have bought several of the standard textbooks -- they are all tough going.
Stevens's book helped me greatly in understanding the path-integral approach: the section on functional calculus was very well presented, then applied in the two chapters on quantum mechanics (QM) and quantum field theory (QFT). I especially liked the connection made with classical probability theory, something I haven't seen in my QFT books.
You will not learn QM from this book. In fact, with a QM-101 background, you may find the QM chapter hard to follow. However, if you have started to learn QFT, it should add value.
The other chapters were of less interest to me personally, but I thought they nicely reviewed their topics from a fresh viewpoint, in particular special relativity and thermodynamics.
Six Core or "hard" Core?.......2001-04-21
While it's pleasant having an overview of physics in one place I am unhappy with the lack of care in writing the text. For example, the section on functional calculus frequently changes notation during an explanation. Also, much more emphasis should have been placed on the fact that the differentiation of functionals produces functional DENSITY derivatives. However, with some effort, I DID succeed in understanding this section. Needs greater clarity of presentation, perhaps with more diagrams.
great pocket book of physics.......1999-11-07
This is a concise and elegant summary of the fundamentals of the six core theories of physics. It even includes a convenient math review. Although the author might have the "beginning graduate student" in mind, now at the end of my Ph.D. training in applied physics at Harvard, I still had a great time reading it!.
