I have been looking for a book that help me to devolop my knowledge and skills in investment banking, this book "The Business of Investment Banking" was really helpful in how investment banks works in 21st century, it went beyond my expectations.
A real comprehensive view act as a reference for the banker.

If you are a teenager or student in your early 20s and are fascinated with the big mysterious world of I-Banking, this book is for you. It starts from ground zero and provides a cursory explanation of what investment banking is, along with some guidance on career paths in the field.

If you are anyone else, forget it. As I struggled to maintain interest, I couldn't help but be reminded of a scene from the movie "Back to School", where Paxton Whitehead plays a B-school professor lecturing his class on how to start a business and Rodney Dangerfield plays a veteran businessman with no formal education. As Whitehead's character is pontificating about the nuances of how global interest rates affect the construction costs that a hypnothetical business will incur, Dangerfield's character can't help but blurt out "Why in the world would you build when you can rent in this market for half a buck a square foot and let someone else have the headaches of property management?". It quickly becomes apparent that the real-world experience of Dangerfield's character is far more useful than the off-topic theoretical knowledge of the professor. This author reminds me of Whitehead's character: Thoroughly vetted in academia and obviously having zero experience in the real world, and thus having zero useful real-world insight to share with his readers.

The most-cited references in the chapter bibliographies are the annual reports of the big I-banks, and the rest of the book is written at the same naieve, glossy-overview level.

In summary, if you want to know what it's like to serve in the Navy, you can get yourself a copy of the Navy's glossy brochure on what Navy careers are supposed to be like, or you can find a vet who's been in the Navy to tell you what it's really like. Reading this book is like reading the Navy's glossy brochure.

Comprehensive and easy to read.......2006-07-27

I am an MBA student at USC looking to get into the I Banking field and this book has really been helpful. It has been consistent with the terms and concepts I've learned in school and through networking with people.

Once I start interviewing, I feel confident that I will have a good inside perspective of the profession as a result of this book. Understandably, it leans toward the bulge bracket firms, but doesn't ignore the niche players.

Definitely a good read for anyone looking to learn more about Investment Banking.

Fantastic, easy to understand overview of the business..........2002-02-12

This book is very well written and very easy to understand. It touches on most of the various aspects of the business without over-focusing or under-focusing on any particular area. A definate business school quality textbook, or an excellent reference source. Real life examples are given to further your hands-on understanding. I emailed the author, and my email was quickly responded to in a very friendly manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn the business of investment banking.

We speak of rights as though they are objective matters of fact that have a crucial bearing on how we ought to behave. Yet few, if any, rights are universally acknowledged without wide differences of meaning. Instead, they usually represent the particular ideals of the individuals or groups that claim them. Theories of rights have always grappled with this central problem, but none of the literature on the subject has offered a satisfactory solution. Lloyd Weinreb makes the first significant advance toward an understanding of what rights are, how they function in our lives, and why we need them.

Weinreb's central argument is that rights are tightly connected to responsibility. They are the normative constituents of persons, attributes that we have rightly, as our due. As such, they enable us to overcome the antinomy of moral freedom and natural causal order. Without them, we could not regard human beings as persons, that is, as free and responsible, or autonomous. Since responsibility is a structural feature of our experience and a matter of fact, rights too are matters of fact.

Against a review of the current debates on the subject, Weinreb fully elaborates his original argument on the nature of rights and finds the source of concrete rights in the nomos, or deep conventions, of a community. Applying his theory, he shows how it helps to answer specific questions about animal rights, human rights-including, in the context of abortion and capital punishment, the right to lifeand civil rights, including particularly rights of the handicapped, gay rights, and affirmative action in contemporary American society. Along the way, Weinreb shows that Oedipus and Roger Clemens have more in common than either would probably have supposed.

This highly original work will significantly redirect the study of rights. It will be especially valuable to those who practice or study law, philosophy, politics, and public policy.

Nonlinear Solid Mechanics a Continuum Approach for Engineering Gerhard A. Holzapfel Graz University of Technology, Austria With a modern, comprehensive approach directed towards computational mechanics, this book covers a unique combination of subjects at present unavailable in any other text. It includes vital information on 'variational principles' constituting the cornerstone of the finite element method. In fact this is the only method by which Nonlinear Solid Mechanics is utilized in engineering practice. The book opens with a fundamental chapter on vectors and tensors. The following chapters are based on nonlinear continuum mechanics - an inevitable prerequisite for computational mechanicians. Useful.......2007-07-17

This book is basically a regurgitation and watered-down version of "Mathematical Foundations of Elasticity", by Marsden and Hughes ( Mathematical Foundations of Elasticity ), just like so many other recently released texts/references including treatments of non-linear continuum mechanics (MFoE was released in 1983, and anticipated a great deal of published work hence). This title has neither the depth of treatment nor the rigorous precision of MFoE. Still it is useful since it does expand more on topics this title and MFoE share in common.

Holzapfel has the distinct "flavor", in many places throughout his work in this book, of the writings/work of Juan C. Simo, one of the superlative workers in non-linear finite elements, who also worked in collaboration with T.J.R. Hughes (e.g., Computational Inelasticity (Interdisciplinary Applied Mathematics) ), and is now deceased.

This is a fresh presentation however and Holzapfel does an excellent job of conveying difficult concepts while maintaining rigor, which is no easy feat. The only place this work falls a little short on rigorous precision is in the treatment of linearization of the non-linear system(s) resulting from the various weak forms.

I did find Holzapfel's treatment of the Lie derivative, just like many other recently published works on the same subject, a bit more revealing and intuitive, while maintaining the requisite rigor, than the alternative derivation/explanation in MFoE.

This book is actually very good. It has a great sections about hyperelastic materials (~ 100 pages). Also it explains well tensors operations (2nd order and 4th order tensors)...

Useless for an intro to continuum graduate course.......2007-01-09

We were required to use this book for ENME670 Continuum Mechanics at the University of Maryland. It was so terrible I had to constantly seek out other resources. I had gotten many books out of our library, almost all of which were more useful than this one (Mase was particularly helpful). Maybe I am being a bit unfair because our professor did not closely follow this book but instead went off of his own notes, but still I cannot think of many textbooks that I liked less than this one throughout my college career. Perhaps this book would have been useful to someone who already knows many of the basics of Continuum Mechanics, but for me it was just horrendous.

A superb book on continuum mechanics.......2000-10-25

I am a graduate student with the mechanical engineering department at Dalhousie university. This book is one of the best texts I have ever read. Every chapter is well organised and the material is presented in a clear manner that stimulates your interest on the subject of continuum mechanics. I have no doubt that engineers of all disciplines (students & professionals) as well as physists and other scientists will find the book as exciting as I have.

One of the best books on Continuum Mechanics........2000-04-13

I think this book tends to fill the bibliographic void left by the Classic and "currently dificult to get" works of C. Truesdell's "The Non-Linear Field Theories of Mechanics" and D. C. Leigh's "Nonlinear Continuum Mechanics; An Introduction to the Continuum Physics and Mathematical Theory of the Nonlinear Mechanical Behavior of Materials". This book is divided mainly in two parts, one part dealing with the mathematical framework at which the subject is based on, and the other one deals with the Physical Principles and the Constitutive Theories of several materials including rubber like materials and biological tissue. It is true that you will not find a specific definition of Nonlinear Material Behavior as I was supposed to find it at the begginig of the work. Instead of that, such a definition must be self-generated into the decided reader's mind, once he or she begins to read the book's parts regarding to Hyperelastic and Viscoelastic Materials .

The quality of Holmes stories declines.......2002-03-25

This edition by Penguin contains the full-length Sherlock Holmes novel THE VALLEY OF FEAR along with selected short stories from THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES and HIS LAST BOW. THE VALLEY OF FEAR was written after Conan Doyle killed off Holmes in 1892, but is set before Holmes' disappearance at the Reichenbach Falls. THE RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES opens with a story that shows that Holmes didn't die in his struggle with Professor Moriarty after all.

These stories show a decline in Conan Doyle's writing. As Iain Pears wrote in the introduction to another Penguin edition of Holmes stories, in the latter half of his life Conan Doyle turned to mysticism and spiritualism and was increasingly unable to portray the cold rationalism of Sherlock Holmes. Many of the stories lack motivation. The story HIS LAST BOW, which is final story in the canon according to Holmesian time, is a poorly-plotted bit of propaganda for England in World War I.

There are footnotes to each story, compiled by Ed Glinert. An expert on literature set in London, Glinert explains the geographical settings of the Holmes stories, and defines anachronistic terms that are no longer use. He also points out the mistakes Arthur Conan Doyle frequently made in his stories, which are often quite amusing (contradicting timelines, Conan Doyles' incomplete understanding of obscure sciencs, etc).

Because of the illuminating introduction and the helpful footnotes, I'd recommend over any others this edition of THE VALLEY OF FEAR AND SELECTED CASES

Great book if you love Sherlock Holmes mysteries!.......1999-12-03

For any reader that loves Sherlock Holmes or any type of mystery, this is the perfect book for you. This book has many stories that create intrigue in your mind. Because this is a Sherlock Holmes novel, it has the obvious characteristics of Sherlock Holmes, the keen observation and the bizarre cases. I have read this book twice and the stories still kept my attention. This book is NOT boring. Along with being a great read, this book has English easy enough for younger students to understand. I highly recommend this book for any person who likes mysteries.
