The White Hornbook is OK.......2001-04-19

If you are in Secured Credit and are using White's textbook - "Secured Transactions - Teaching Materials" copyright 2000, do not buy his hornbook. He has merely lifted the explanatory text from the textbook and put it together as a hornbook. Furthermore, if you are looking for help on Secured Credit, there are other books that work much harder to make it understandable to the novice. "Understanding Article 9" is one of them.

The book covers principles and principal problem areas rather than all particulars of perfection and priority rules. Nine Questions is the first secured credit casebook to include edited, relevant Article 9 provisions throughout the book, right next to the problems and cases and original text.

worst textbook ever.......2006-02-11

It is outrageous that this book is being used in law school classrooms. I am shocked by the amount of grammatical and spelling mistakes in the book. Much worse than that, however, the substance of the book was abysmal. There was very little explanation of the sections in Article Nine. The book was mostly the Article Nine reprinted with hypothetical problems. The problems, however, could not necessarily be answered by the information that preceded it. In addition, there was no consistency in whether or not answers were provided to the questions. Sometimes there were answers with explanations, sometimes there were just answers, and most of the time there were no answers.

For what was missing in useful information, the authors made up for with trivial information. I am not sure if the authors were trying to be clever, but the amount of useless information in this book astonishing. There was an eight-page article on the life of a Repo Man that did nothing to improve my understanding of Article Nine. For some unknown reason, the websites for the companies in the hypotheticals were often provided.

To understand what an unprofessional piece of work this book is, one just has to look at the table of contents. It is five pages long, typed in large font, and contains limited references to find information in the book. The authors still managed in this short reference section to include three entries for the same term (cramdown, cram down, and cram-down) and two entries for John Travolta. Of course there was no reference for something useful like "Scope of Article Nine."

No law professor should use this textbook. If a student reads this review because your professor is using this book, beg them to change their mind. It is a disservice to law school students who are paying a considerable amount of money for their classes to be forced to use sub-par material.

If I was one of the authors, I would be ashamed to have my name on this book.

A vast number of neural cell surface glycoproteins belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily have been isolated over the past two decades. In functional studies, many of them have been shown to confer adhesive properties to cells and to play an important role in developmental processes such as cell migration and axon outgrowth. Recent observations implicate Ig superfamily adhesion molecules in the regulation of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity, in regeneration after neural trauma, as well as in the pathogenesis of malformations in the developing nervous systems. This book summarizes the molecular features and some of the cellular functions of this important class of cell surface molecules. It includes detailed information on the molecular structure of the immunoglobulin fold, the common domain of these proteins, the molecular interactions between various neural Ig superfamily members and their role in signal transduction, as well as the role of Ig superfamily adhesion molecules in axon guidance during both vertebrate and invertebrate neurogenesis. Recent observations on a role for these molecules in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity and in the regeneration of injured axons in the peripheral and central nervous system are described. A discussion on the connection between Ig superfamily adhesion molecules and medical genetics is also provided.

This book is an introduction to the techniques of many-body quantum theory with a large number of applications to condensed matter physics. The basic idea of the book is to provide a self-contained formulation of the theoretical framework without losing mathematical rigor, while at the same time providing physical motivation and examples. The examples are taken from applications in electron systems and transport theory. On the formal side, the book covers an introduction to second quantization, many-body Green's function, finite temperature Feynman diagrams and bosonization. The applications include traditional transport theory in bulk as well as mesoscopic systems, where both the Landau-Buttiker formalism and recent developments in correlated transport phenomena in mesoscopic systems and nano-structures are covered. Other topics include interacting electron gases, plasmons, electron-phonon interactions, superconductivity and a final chapter on one-dimensional systems where a detailed treatment of Luttinger liquid theory and bosonization techniques is given. Having grown out of a set of lecture notes, and containing many pedagogical exercises, this book is designed as a textbook for an advanced undergraduate or graduate course, and is also well suited for self-study.

EXCELLENT BOOK!.......2005-10-21

This book is exactly what a new student (with some training in basic grad courses in solid state, statistical mechanics, etc.) needs to grasp condensed matter physics without a "research-based bias." Todays programs are so focused on application that a thorough treatment of pedigogical materials get superfically taught. Philip Anderson warns about this in his timeless classic "Basic Notions." This book uses QFT in canonical picture (bootstraps), no mention of path integrals. I started out in HEP, so I got trained fairly well in path integrals, some may find this a barrier with the book. Luttinger theory is the most modern topic touched on, applications to materials science. I recommend Wen's book if you want to look at Quantum Hall Effects and Topological Orders (post 1980's).
