Book Description
Is knowledge an economic good? Which are the characteristics of the institutions regulating the production and diffusion of knowledge? Cumulation of knowledge is a key determinant of economic growth, but only recently knowledge has moved to the core of economic analysis. Recent literature also gives profound insights into events like scientific progress, artistic and craft development which have been rarely addressed as socio-economic institutions, being the domain of sociologists and historians rather than economists. This volume adopts a multidisciplinary approach to bring knowledge in the focus of attention, as a key economic issue.
Book Description
Interest in intellectual property and other institutions that promote innovation exploded during the 1990s. Innovation and Incentives provides a clear and wide-ranging introduction to the economics of innovation, suitable for teaching at both the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels. It will also be useful to legal and economics professionals. Written by an expert on intellectual property and industrial organization, the book achieves a balanced mix of institutional details, examples, and theory. Analytical, empirical, or institutional factors can be given different emphases at different levels of study.
Innovation and Incentives presents the historical, legal, and institutional contexts in which innovation takes place. After a historical overview of the institutions that support innovation, ranging from ancient history through today's government funding and hybrid institutions, the book discusses knowledge as a public good, the economic design of intellectual property, different models of cumulative innovation, the relation of competition to licensing and joint ventures, patent and copyright enforcement and litigation, private/public funding relationships, patent values and the return on R&D investment, intellectual property issues arising from direct and indirect network externalities, and globalization. The text presents technical and abstract analysis and at the same time sheds light on current controversies and policy-relevant topics, including the difficulty of enforcing copyright in the digital age and international protection of intellectual property.

This publication presents a framework that emphasizes the economic and policy incentives needed to create competitive firms and national economies. It also explains the key capabilities that firms must develop in-house in order to become more competitive. The framework provides a link between important policy issues such as corporate governance, foreign direct investment, innovation readiness, intellectual property rights, e-commerce, skill training, and supply chain management. The papers presented here emphasize that, while individual firms must take the lead in enhancing competitiveness, the role of public policy remains vital. This book also presents examples of private effort and public policies that exemplify the lessons drawn from international experience in designing policies and institutions that strengthen competitiveness in industrializing countries

Book Description
Developing countries continue to make widespread use of tax policy instruments to promote industrial and technological development. The actual effect of these instruments on business activity and government revenues, however, remains an open question. This volume takes an important first step
in quantifying the investment incentives on business decisions related to production and investment. In addition, the book suggests the consequences of such incentives for government revenues. It will be of interest to students and scholars of public finance, industrial organization, and
developmental economics.

Book Description
Flexible Incentives for the Adoption of Environmental Technologies in
Agriculture identifies and structures more flexible economic incentives for the achievement of environmental goals in agriculture. It provides a conceptual framework and presents case studies that analyze how flexible incentives can address environmental problems that are caused by agricultural production. The book brings together economists, agency personnel and political economists for the purpose of exploring how new cutting-edge economic tools could be developed and applied to environmental problems. The goal of the book is to complement and to expand the economic theory of environmental regulation and technology adoption with new research findings.
The key theme of this book is the important role technology takes when addressing environmental problems. New technologies and technical development are broadly defined to include economic instruments, innovative ways to communicate environmental information, new economic institutions, and education. This book is designed for public and private policymakers, government analysts, teachers, researchers and students who specialize in the fields of natural resources, agricultural economics and environmental regulation. It provides a fresh perspective on what types of incentives may be used to lead us to the desired environmental outcomes and offers new ideas about the types of economic instruments that may achieve these outcomes.

Book Description
The pharmaceutical industry worldwide is a rapidly burgeoning industry contributing to growth of gross domestic product and employment. Technological change in this field has been very rapid, with many new products being introduced. For this reason in part, health care budgets throughout the world have increased dramatically, eliciting growing pressures for cost containment. This book explores four important issues in pharmaceutical innovations: (1) the industry structure of pharmaceutical innovation; (2) incentives for correcting market failures in allocating resources for research and development; (3) competition and marketing; and (4) public evaluation of the benefits and costs of innovation. The lessons are applicable to countries all over the world, at all levels of economic development. By discussing existing evidence this book proposes incentive arrangements to accomplish social objectives.
Book Description
Motivated people are crucial to create a sustainable competitive advantage for your company. Successful Management by Motivation shows that in a knowledge-based society, this goal cannot be achieved by extrinsic motivation alone. Pay for performance often even hurts because it crowds out intrinsic motivation like work morale. To succeed, companies have to find ways of fostering and sustaining intrinsic motivation. With the help of in-depth case studies, representative surveys, and analyses based on a large number of firms and employees, this joint work of business researchers and economists identifies the various aspects of motivation in companies and shows how the right combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can be achieved.

Book Description
Balance of Forces addresses the question: How can an eighteenth-century Constitution effectively control a twenty-first-century government? Bruff explores and critiques the law that governs the relationships among the three constitutional branches, and between them and the massive administrative bureaucracy that has arisen. He examines the delicate tradeoffs between autonomy and accountability that govern each branch. Bruff also canvasses the ways that the elected branches oversee the bureaucracy, as they compete to control the administrative state.

Book Description
In many developing countries, natural resources including lakes, rivers, rang elands and forests have diverse groups of users. Pressure on these "common pool resources" is increasing. Further, sustainable management is especially complicated where there is a mixture of traditional and 'modern' authority systems. This can create confusion not only about user rights but also about who has the right to enforce rules and regulations. To prevent overuse and resource degradation, robust management systems will be needed.
One solution is co-management: involving the community of users at local level in decision making related to the resources. Achieving mutual understanding, supported by formal agreements both among users and between users and government, is a vital part of co-management. "Co-managing the Commons" addresses the many issues that must be faced. Case studies from Mali and Zambia provide specific illustrations of possible pathways to cooperation; a final chapter explores some of the commonalities in these studies and sums up lessons about ways to facilitate collaborative management.

Not the same test edition as the free online ETS test.......2005-03-09
Many of you probably know that ETS.org has free PDF versions of its GRE exams, including the subject tests like Biology. However, the test guides that were published and are now out of print contain DIFFERENT exam questions. So if you can get one, it's still worth your while.
Disclaimer: I'm selling my copy, so a review encouraging you to buy this book could be considered a conflict of interest! :)
How can you not buy the official guide?.......2001-06-05
I was a chemical engineering major in college and after a few years out of school, I decided to go to graduate school for a PhD in molecular biology. Being that I had no formal education in biology whatsoever, I decided to take the biology test rather than the biochemistry because I think it's a much easier test to study for from ground zero (and I was right). I had no idea what to expect from the test, so this book helped a lot to demystify it. I knew what type of questions were asked and whatever I didn't understand, I would look it up in a textbook or on the web (you'd be surprised how much biology one can learn on the web, so many colleges put up study guides and reviews for their students and everyone can have access to them). What's the point of studying for the test, if you don't practice on the official version? On the real test, I actually saw some of the same questions. They actually recycle questions, just posed in slightly different ways. I only study using this guide and the Princeton Review guide (and supplemented with textbooks here and there), and I got a decent enough score to get me into three graudate schools in NYC, including Columbia, NYU and Albert Einstein. I couldn't have done it without this book. This is NOT an endorsement of ETS, by the way, I think ETS is one of the most evil empires ever created on earth and I think the government should shut them down because they are an unfair monopoly with no real consumer or educational value. ETS is the biggest scam that was ever invented. I'm endorsing this book because you have to learn the system to beat the system.
This was the most useful aid I found.......2000-01-27
I took the GRE Biology Subject Exam 12/1999, and prepared for it using every single GRE Bio test preparation book I could find (about 5.) This was the most useful of them all, because it provided the only really accurate representation of what the exam was actually like. It is only one full sample exam and one partial sample exam and doesn't provide any review material per se, but it is well worth taking as practice, and then even more useful if you go back over the questions you missed, and review or teach yourself the pertinent subject material from standard text books. It seemed pretty obvious to me that Campbell's Biology and The Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al, were two major sources for the test questions. Some of the questions on the practice exam covered material that my college Biology and Biochemistry courses didn't address. For example, I was confronted with population equations I had never seen before, but turned out to be in a previously unread chapter in my Campbell's text. Learning that, and other new material the practice test exposed me to, proved invaluable on test day. If it makes any difference, I scored in the upper 97%. If your goal is to score 90% and above, I strongly recommend this book. On the other hand, if your Bio knowledge is very rusty and you need extensive review material, or you have more modest scoring goals, Cracking the GRE Biology Exam by Deborah Guest was reasonably OK, but not broad enough in scope to result in top scores. The other review books I used were really pretty bad and a waste of time and money. They were so poorly written, using material so far removed from the content of the actual test, I honestly began to feel I could write a better review book myself. Maybe I should.

Customer Reviews:
This is a Rip-Off Scam.......2005-01-21
I am a fourth year university student preparing to take the Biochem/Cell Bio GRE Subject Test. I ordered this book thinking that it was a work-book and stugy guide. I was under the impression that this volume would contain multiple sample tests along with study materials in the individual subject areas. At over $90, plus shipping, I was expecting a comprehensive review like the workbooks published by Barron's for the SAT.
To say I was disappointed when I recieved this book is a gross understatement. Its not even a book, it is a 60 PAGE BOOKLET. [...] This booklet contains just ONE full-size subject test, and not much more. The sample test occupies the bulk of the booklet, the remaining 16 pages offer no viable insight as to how you should study for this test, or any valuable tips to get you ahead. Examples of the "advice" contained in this useless booklet includes, "A general review of you undergrad cirriculum is the best preparation," Gee; thanks.
You can obtain a sample test for FREE when you register for your subject test. Do yourself a favor and save your 90 bucks, you can get everyting contained in this lousy booklet AT NO CHARGE. A no-name company called BookoRama in Pennsylvania billed my debit card for almost A HUNDRED DOLLARS. When the booklet arrived, it did not come with any kind of invoice or receipt, just a slip of paper that read "ALL SALES FINAL." It might as well have said "YOU GOT F*****" There is no hope for a refund. On top of it all, to add insult to injury, the list price on the back cover reads: $9.00 US!!!
I got screwed out of my hard earned cash for a worthless, nine dollar booklet. Take it from me; dont order this trash. The only way to study for this test is with your old Biochem, Cell and Genetics textbooks; NOT by dropping over 90 dollars for this SCAM.
These test questions are not available elsewhere.......2004-09-28
The two most recent reviewers have suggested that this book is the same as the PDF file on ets.org. Although I'm sure they were trying to be helpful, that information is false.
The file you can download from ETS is an electronic copy of the same sample booklet that you get in the mail (for free) when you register for the exam.
The published book itself follows the same format (test info, outline of topics, sample test, scoring). However, it is a totally different set of test questions.
For example, page 1 of the test on the ETS website includes questions on: RNA molecules that exhibit catalytic activity; the conversion of pyruvate to oxylate; identifying a particular hormone given a description of its function; oxydative phosphorylation; a general question on enzyme catalyzation; and the turnover of molecular components through the plasma membrane.
Page 1 of the published test guide (the book for sale here) includes questions on: the importance of phospholipids as consituents of cell membranes; the stabilization of folded states of globular proteins; the ionic strength of .5 molar MgCl(2); the most efficient substrate of an enzyme; the terminal electron acceptor for noncyclic electron flow during the light reactions of photosynthesis; the most effective method for isolation of secretory vesicles from a cell lysate; the function of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (of five listed functions, you have to pick the one that's incorrect); communication among the cisternae of the Golgi complex; and theoretical implications fo the resolving power of light microscopes.
As you can see, they are NOT the same exam.
Both the ets.org PDF file and the published book include 180 questions. Either of them should give you a good idea of how you would do on the real exam.
However, if you can get a hold of the published book (which ETS has stopped making), you have twice as many questions to study from. If you use the actual questions to look up topics, then the bigger pool of sample questions you have, the better. Some people aren't just satisfied with knowing they got a correct answer; they make sure they can identify all the terms and concepts in the *wrong* answers as well.
I think the printed study guide is useful. The two reviewers who say it's not useful haven't even looked at it; they just "heard" it was the same as the PDF file on the website.
Don't bother.......2004-06-11
I bought this book thinking it was a review similar to those for the General GRE exam, I thought wrong. This book is a bound version of a sample test that you can download from the ETS website along with the "helpful" hints that the ETS provides. Don't bother wasting your time and money trying to get a copy of this book, you can download the whole thing as a PDF at the ETS website.
$250!.......2004-04-27
Someone is trying to sell one of these books, used, for $250.
I downloaded a practice test online at gre.org
I hear that its the same information.
Gives you an idea of what's on the test.......2001-12-17
A must for those who are going to take the test, however you should use big textbooks to prepare for the test, for example, Alberts, Lodish, Lehninger as well as your lecture notes.
Actually the funny thing about this test is that nobody ever answers all the questions on the this particular GRE subject test, so dont get depressed if you cant. Actually I dont think anybody can even manage to read all the questions during the real test. What matters is your percentile, not the absolute score. And if you check the the end of each test you will find the warning: "If you finished ahead of time please dont leave the test room" :-))

Product Description
This coffee-table book will delight and inform general readers curious about ideas of chaos, fractals, and nonlinear complex systems. Developed out of ten years of interdisciplinary seminars in chaos and complex systems at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, it features multiple ways of knowing: Robin Chapmans poems of everyday experience of change in a complex world, associated metaphorically with Julien Clinton Sprotts full-color computer art generated from billions of versions of only three simple equations for strange attractors, Julia sets, and iterated function systems; his definitions of 39 key terms; a mathematical appendix; and even a multiple-choice quiz to test understanding. Accompanied by a CD-ROM of the poet reading 13 poems and 1,000 images of chaos art from which slide shows can be generated and 100 high-resolution posters created. With a foreword by Cliff Pickover, author of A Passion for Mathematics.

Truth and Beauty.......2005-11-16
I had the good fortune to see this book in the making when it was a thick sheaf of flimsy printer paper. The words and images collided in gorgeous ways, and I knew something special was taking form.
I love what Robin Chapman and Clint Sprott have done. I love this book. More collaborations like this should be undertaken. It deepens our sensibilities. It enlarges our world. It does something graceful for the heart. The fractal images are beautifully rendered and Sprott's clear, concise definitions of key terms illuminate them for the lay reader. Chapman's poems are in perfect alignment with both the fractals and definitions, showing us "life on the edge of change at every scale."
Here's a coffee table book that goes beyond decoration. Here's a book of poetry that goes beyond words. Here's science that makes itself accessible. I highly recommend this book to artists, scientists, and everyone else who wants to make the connections that help us explain our world and our lives.

Book Description
Broadview's collection of Augusta Webster's poetry is the first since 1895. This welcome edition will again bring Webster's extraordinarily vital work to readers.
Writing in the second half of the 19th century, Augusta Webster was very highly acclaimed in her own day. Christina Rossetti thought her "by far the most formidable" woman poet. Her work has again come into favour, so much so that Isobel Armstrong and her co-editors of the influential anthology, Nineteenth-Century Women Poets, declare that "there can be no doubt that Augusta Webster ranks as one of the great Victorian poets." This collection is a selection of her best work, emphasizing her powerful dramatic monologues and including a substantial selection of her sonnets and other lyrics. With an introduction and background documents that highlight the distinctiveness of her work, this edition will help to re-establish Augusta Webster as a major figure of nineteenth-century English literature.

Poems and more.......2000-09-20
"Portraits and Other Poems" by Augusta Webster (ed. Christine Sutphin) is a nice collection not only of Webster's wonderful dramatic monologues, but also of her essays (which were published under the grand title of "A Housewife's Opinion"). The introduction, chronology and contemporary reviews provide good background and context for a poet who was greatly admired during her own time but has been largely ignored during the twentieth century. Professor Sutphin has done an excellent job in making available a poet who has been out of print for most of the century.
