Dangerious Book! May cause the reader to react radically........2001-07-20
A unique tea cup fell to the floor and shattered and all of my miracle glue could not restore it. A child of 12, sold for $500 to a brothel in Manila services 10 men a day and she is kept in perpetual slavery. She has been infected with HIV. "Veronica's life has ended" and all the miracle prayers we send up will not redeem her.
This book is about the shattered lives of children. It is about the reality of such painful deprivation for the estimated one million new child slaves each year. It is not just about the pain, Kilbourn also considers what prevention and holistic intervention needs to take place to salvage these abused children.
In `Sexually Exploited Children' Phillis Kilbourn presses the boundaries of our dignified comfort zones as she takes us into the world of 'Sexually Exploited Children'. She does not stop with just child prostitution, child pornography, or pedophile rings, but she also peals back the ugly scab of incest. Kilbourn does not leave us as voyeurs into the heinous world of sexual perversion, rather her sections dealing with prevention and intervention postulates some hope.
Reality says that the immoral world of child sexual exploitation is only a symptom of deeper economic, social and spiritual problems. Normalcy says parents don't sell their children into sexual slavery on a whim; rather it is because of a major breakdown within the society. A breakdown not just in Asia, Brazil or in "those backward poor countries", but this world exists here in our homeland - big time.
Kilbourn's bottom line is that if we, as an educated, advanced society, fail to acknowledge and then engage these profane activities, then we 'de facto' accept the dehumanization of these perverted people and their pervasive powers. We 'de facto', by our disengagement, inadvertently accept Dante's world as our world.
Kilbourn and MARC publishing have done us a significant service by revealing this dark world to us. This is a must read if you are willing to have your conscience pricked. But, be aware that during your reading you may hear the voice of a child crying and find yourself involved. Highly recommended.

HEART-BREAKING.......2004-03-26
This book was very heart-breaking for the simple fact that kids 11-15 were being forced to work in sweat shops, without getting payed for it. Just thinking about it gets you angry because you have little kids that can enjoy thier chilhood because of this, its like their whole childhood was taken away. The worst was that if parents were slaves and they had kids, the children would also have to be forced to do the same. The good thing about all this is that they were able to fight for their rights and because of that we do not have anymore slavery.

Book Description
This investigation of child labor explores difficult conceptual and public policy issues. It demonstrates the sheer prevalence of the commercial exploitation of child labor in both industrial and developing countries, and its rapid growth today under the twin pressures of mass poverty and the globalized marketplace for labor. In addition to its rich empirical material from countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Europe, the author makes a clear distinction between the socialization of children through labor within the family and their economic exploitation for profit. It also focuses on the role of adults with responsibility for children, and the specific form which paternal domination takes towards children.

Book Description
Women who shop are an extraordinary force in retail. They are knowledgeable and astute - and they are very clear about how much their financial power and use of word of mouth can help or hinder a retail business.
Why Women Shop provides a fascinating insight into female shopping habits, much of which will register with the shoppers themselves as they gain a better understanding of their shopping style, and laugh (or shudder) in recognition at other women's shopping experiences.
The book is dedicated to all the many and varied women who shop:
-
Ms Grab and Go - who is time poor, quick and targeted in her purchasing
-
The lone browser - who can wander around for hours, soaking up the latest trends
-
The retail therapy seeker - who is seeking company and purchases to fulfill her inner needs
-
The girls' day out shopper - who shops in packs, is happy and relaxed, wears sensible shoes and carries numerous bags
-
The hunter - who is alert, serious and focused on finding a bargain
The global research behind this book provides invaluable information for retailers, marketers, manufacturers of consumer goods, advertisers, visual merchandisers, property developers, salespeople, or anyone who has dealings with the retail industry.
Customer Reviews:
Why Women Shop - not as simple as you think!.......2006-09-18
I work in marketing and particularly in the area of understanding how consumers shop. This book provides invaluable insight into what women do in stores, why they do it and how as brand managers and retailers we can better meet their needs.
There are two key aspects to shopper research, firstly to provide an understanding of what shoppers do in store and why they do it. Secondly, we must be able to turn this into actions in order to make the research valuable. Why Women Shop delivers on both these aspects and does so in a way that is easy to read, easy to understand and crucially you can recognise yourself in the findings.
Even if you aren't actually working in the retail industry this book makes a fascinating read. Which shopper type are you? I am firmly a "Grab and Go' shopper both in grocery and for clothes and my fiancé is without a doubt a "Lone Browser" - now I know why we can't go shopping together! The shopper typologies are believable, easy to understand and make complete sense.
The authors manage to break a very complicated subject down to understandable bite size chunks that build to provide a full understanding of the female shopper. The book specifically talks about what works in retail environments and what doesn't and provides clear advice on how to improve the shopping experience.
Overall a fascinating book that manages that most difficult of things - an interesting read that also has business application.
A great read if you like shopping and if you don't it will help explain why!
Thanks
Alex
Great Book!.......2006-09-15
To Everyone Thinking About Buying This Book
- do it right now! This book was such an eye opener, not that I plan on giving up shopping as a result but I certainly recognised myself in among the types (naturally, it depends on if I am shopping for groceries or shoes!). I've since given this book to my Mother and a few friends. I wish I could send a copy to my ex-boyfriend's mother, it would certainly explain why we couldn't shop together!
Stella and Michael have written a great answer to that all important question "why women shop?". Yes, us women are saying we already knew but there is a certain sense of satisfaction in knowing there is a legitimate researched reason that you can hand to your boyfriend next time he wants to know where that new outfit came from! And it may even help men to appreciate just how difficult the average shopping trip can be! Some men reading this book may also recognise some of the traits in themselves.
I'd say the book suits anyone who wants to understand shopping behaviours, either their own or others. You don't have to be an academic, although the authors are and their attention to literature review and research is evidence of their backgrounds and training in those hallowed halls of academia.
The structure of the book is well thought out, you can drop in and out of it over time without loosing the thread, or read it straight through in one sitting. I've read it straight through but am now delving back into it trying to understand how some of my friends shop. It makes sense, did you ever shop with someone and it just isn't a great day? But if you shop with someone else you always find great things and have a good day? This book certainly helped me understand why, the shopping personalities have to be the same or compliment each other. A hunter cannot shop with a retail therapist!
Personally, I found the book satisfying to read. I even loved the front cover! Mmm, I feel the need to go shopping for shoes!

The Best I've Come Across........2007-05-12
This is the best criminal investigation survey book I've come across.
In terms of my experiences it seems to be the real McCoy. That is, what the author reports is close or identical to my experiences. The author even alludes to much of the nonsense that happens within an investigation. So I recommend the book for newbie investigators.
However, the book has the same fault all the other investigation books have, and I assume this is the result of no real world investigation experience by the authors. None of the books address the forces that act upon an investigation.
Investigators can experience a quick career meltdown when their conclusions are at odds with 'experts' and powerful political influences. There really are idiots whose walls are filled with diplomas and certificates. Their incompetence becomes painfully obvious in court when other experts scrutinize their work. There are 'crisis du jour' groups who see their special monsters beneath every bed and inside every closet, and woe be the investigator who see's differently. Or someone has the ear of a judge or mayor or whomever, plus an active divorce or child custody case. If somneone's best friend is a judge, she WILL try to influence how the case goes. God help you, then, because youre on your own. Cops and legal eagles do not get much training to identify people who manipulate the system.

Quantum computation and information is a new, rapidly developing interdisciplinary field. Therefore, it is not easy to understand its fundamental concepts and central results without facing numerous technical details. This book provides the reader a useful and not-too-heavy guide. It offers a simple and self-contained introduction; no previous knowledge of quantum mechanics or classical computation is required.
Volume 1 may be used as a textbook for a one-semester introductory course in quantum information and computation, both for upper-level undergraduate students and for graduate students. It contains a large number of solved exercises, which are an essential complement to the text, as they will help the student to become familiar with the subject. The book may also be useful as general education for readers who want to know the fundamental principles of quantum information and computation and who have the basic background acquired from their undergraduate course in physics, mathematics, or computer science.

Book Description
A magnificent celebration ofand an essential introduction toAfrican American life and culture. Folklore displays the heart and soul of a people. African American folklore not only hands down traditions and wisdom through the generations but also tells the history of a people banned from writing and reading during slavery. In this anthology, Daryl Cumber Dance collects a wealth of tales that have survived and been adapted over the years, many featuring characters (like Brer' Rabbit) from African culture. She leaves no genre of folklore out, including everything from proverbs and recipes to folk songs and rumor. There is a section on the unique style that African Americans have consciously fashioned, including works by and about Paul Laurence Dunbar, Zora Neale Hurston, and Jelly Roll Morton. Within the chapter on folk art, which includes a sixteen-page color insert, quilts, dolls, sculpture, and painting get their due. From the famous to the anonymous, From My People is Dance's gift back to her culture. 30 black-and-white illustrations, 16 pages of color.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best Black folklore anthologies .......2006-11-01
It is a sad fact of our times that the folklore of Black America is almost a vanishing art. As a folklorist, historian, and story teller, it saddens me that I often ask kids if their parents tell them any stories and they don't have a clue, and our older folks tales of Old John, Anancy, Brer Rabbit, the Signifying Monkey, Shine and the Titanic, Raw Head and Bloody Bones, etc. are unknown to most people of my age and younger.
Fortunately, people like Prof. Daryl C. Dance are doing what they can to rectify this situation by anthologies such as this. She does an excellent job not only in preserving this kind of material but also the classic folk sermons of Rev. C.L. Franklin and lesser known preachers as well as songs and children's games. Material such as this has been done before, especially by Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Dorson, and Roger Abrahams, but not very recently.
So overall, this book is a treasure. However,as much fun as Black folklore is to read, its better if watched or heard orally. Somebody needs to make a CD or DVD documentary of this sort of thing (hint hint to my fellow folklorists and scholars out there).
Capturing Culture.......2004-10-09
How often have we sat at the feet of our elders and heard stories imparted to us regarding the days gone by? Handed down through the generations, these tales were not only meant for entertainment purposes, they impart wisdom and provide a living lesson. In 400 YEARS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN FOLKLORE, author Daryl Cumber Dance has created a compilation of folktales, folk music - including spirituals and freedom songs - as well as blues and ballads, folk arts and crafts, proverbs and many other pearls of wisdom that breed familiarity in the Black community. The African slave trade tore our early ancestors from their native lands, stripping them of their individual identities and beliefs, yet our strong forefathers were able to maintain some of their culture and the stories that were once told to them.
Ms. Dance does a wonderful job in capturing the vernacular used in some of the stories as well as providing some historical background to set a frame of reference for her readers. Each story and every entry into this collection caught my attention. I was compelled through the pages by my curiosity and to be reminded of days gone by. Each was very well put together, yet I found my favorite folk tale to be "De Ways of De Wimmens" which is a humorous short tale revolving around Adam and Eve's first days together and the establishment of gender roles. This story literally had me laughing out loud because even today, I can relate to the basic truth found in this tale.
400 YEARS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN FOLKLORE is not just a collection of folk tales. Don't get me wrong, Ms. Dance does rightful justice in providing glimpses into our dynamic society. She reaches back into the early days, guides us through the civil rights era by including powerful sermons by Reverend C.L. Franklin, Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson and many more. She even addresses some of today's disconcerting issues, such as urban gentrification and gang violence.
In summary, the selections included in this book run the gamut throughout the reaches of time. It provides glimpses into the strong traditions held by the Black community and imparts some wisdom as to how these traditions may have taken root. In writing 400 YEARS OF AFRICAN AMERICAN FOLKLORE, Ms. Dance stated, "My goal throughout my career and in this anthology has been to collect, transcribe, preserve and respect the integrity of the folk text." In my humble opinion, she did just that. Ms. Dance should be lauded for her efforts.

An amazing collection!.......2004-07-05
For most people, the term "folklore" probably conjures the image of songs and stories, but as Daryl Cumber Dance illustrates, it's much more than that. It's about quilts and the history they embody. It's about hair styles, dress, food, traditions of marching bands, sermons, speeches...even internet rumors and graffiti. As one chapter is headed, it's about "The Style of Soul."

A fine volume gathering a diverse range of tales.......2002-06-06
400 years of Afro-American folklore are represented in From My People, a fine volume gathering a diverse range of tales, from Brer Rabbit and African motifs to proverbs, recipes, and folk songs. It's the range of writings which sets From My People apart from competing collections on Afro-American oral traditions, making for a comprehensive and important title.
a must for your library.......2002-01-28
This huge anthology covers black folklore going back to slavery and up to the latest classic email story. Poems, spirituals, great speeches and famous sermons are included. There is a chapter on little written about black crafts and art and culural activities such as step shows and rent parties. It could be argued that the book is too big. Bibles and dictionaries weigh less than it does but From My People is a reference book. It gives a quick overview of 400 years of folklore. This should be in school libraries across the land.
