The Depression brought unprecedented changes for American workers and organized labor. As the economy plummeted, employers cut wages and laid off workers, while simultaneously attempting to wrest more work from those who remained employed.
In mills, mines, and factories workers organized and resisted, striking for higher wages, improved working conditions, and the right to bargain collectively. As workers walked the picket line or sat down on the shop floor, they could be heard singing. This book examines the songs they sang at three different strikes- the Gastonia, North Carolina, textile mill strike (1929), Harlan County, Kentucky, coal mining strike (1931-32), and Flint, Michigan, automobile sit-down strike (1936-37).
Whether in the Carolina Piedmont, the Kentucky hills, or the streets of Michigan, the workers' songs were decidedly class-conscious. All show the workers' understanding of the necessity of solidarity and collective action.
In Flint the strikers sang:
The trouble in our homestead
Was brought about this way
When a dashing corporation
Had the audacity to say
You must all renounce your union
And forswear your liberties,
And we'll offer you a chance
To live and die in slavery.
As a shared experience, the singing of songs not only sent the message of collective action but also provided the very means by which the message was communicated and promoted. Singing was a communal experience, whether on picket lines, at union rallies, or on shop floors. By providing the psychological space for striking workers to speak their minds, singing nurtured a sense of community and class consciousness. When strikers retold the events of their strike, as they did in songs, they spread and preserved their common history and further strengthened the bonds among themselves.
In the strike songs the roles of gender were pronounced and vivid. Wives and mothers sang out of their concerns for home, family, and children. Men sang in the name of worker loyalty and brotherhood, championing male solidarity and comaraderie.
Informed by the new social history, this critical examination of strike songs from three different industries in three different regions gives voice to a group too often deemed as inarticulate. This study, the only book-length examination of this subject, tells history "from the bottom up" and furthers an understanding of worker culture during the tumultuous Depression years.

Lynch (College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, OH) does a nice job of describing the role songs played in three depression-era strikes (Gastonia, 1929; Harlan County, 1931-32; Flint, 1936-37). Readers unfamiliar with song writers such as Aunt Molly Jackson, Jim Garland, and Ella May will be delighted by Lynch's descriptions of them and their songs. Scholars will find new insights into the songs, and a lengthy bibliography. One of Lynch's principal points is that "unlike their husbands, brothers, and fathers, women lyricists drew an overt connection between the deprivation they saw their families experiencing and the fight for higher wages, improved working conditions, and collective bargaining rights." Lynch's prose sparkles, and this sets his book apart from so many others published by academic presses.

As a financial planner and co-author of Making Bread: The Ultimate Financial Guide for Women Who Need Dough, I recommend this book for every college student. They need to know how to use credit wisely and this book will help them understand how it can be done. More importantly, students will learn what happens when they abuse credit. Few, if any, understand how bad credit will affect their future ability to borrow money. Money management should be a required course for college students. Info all in one place -- very educational.......2003-02-06
I found this book to be very useful when I was preparing to buy my first house. It explains everything about credit reporting and I picked up a lot of valuable (and interesting) tips (sprinkled liberally throughout the book are boxes containing "Hot Tip"s). Good examples of sample credit reports help you understand how to read yours closely. Sure, a lot of this information can be found free by searching the internet, but it's handy to have it all in one place, for browsing and study.

This is a good book if you do not know much about credit, credit reports, The big 3 and how they effect your life.
However, I bought this book for credit repair and there about 20 pages on how to repair credit. For me the book could have been smaller.
If, on the other hand, you have never seen your credit report, don't know much about the big 3, don't know how credit works or how to "divorce-proof" your credit, then this is the book for you.
Worth Buying.......2002-03-03
This book helped me understand my credit record and my federal credit record rights and how to correct problems in it. It was really helpful to me after I had experienced some money troubles. I have loaned it to some friends and they benefited from it too. The author, who is a bankruptcy attorney knows what he is talking about.

Don't waste your money.......2001-06-02
This book contains information that you can get free in the internet. It outlines your rights for you, gives information about the credit bureau but that's about it. Most of the book does not even directly address credit repair but acquiring credit and keeping good credit--these are of course helpful but not if your immediate concern is credit repair. The only saving grace this book has is its discussion about credit repair companies but then again this information is also on the web. If you have a few hours and would like to save money go on the internet for free resources before buying this book.

The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.......2006-07-09
Good - tells you how to show for credit by being professional, researching and asking the right questions and starting at the local level.
Bad - Incorrect material. 1- The FTC can represent an individual consumer in litigation. 2- Credit bureaus are not obligated to honor a consumer's request to be removed from pre-approved lists. 3 - credit bureaus score credit files. 4 - Removal of a tax lien cannot be reinserted. 5 - Bounced checks do not appear on credit reports. All of this is wrong and the list goes on. Too many errors to list here.
Ugly - the book accuses credit repair companies of taking advantage of consumers ignorance but this book is also advancing at the expense of consumers lack of understanding or knowledge by providing erroneous information to the masses.
More time should have been spent researching the facts.

This is the third book by Arnold S. Goldstein I have purchased. This book is labeled EZ for a reason, the content is very easy to understand. I would recommend his older book The Guarenteed Credit guide also as it has a little more indepth content.

Despite impressive innovations by some states, western water laws and institutions now in place were designed chiefly for an earlier era and have not adapted to the new demands and stresses on water resources. In Water and the Arid Lands of the Western United States the authors explore the nature of water demands in the agricultural and municipal sectors and set forth prescriptions for the west to move away from its historical reliance on expensive supply-side projects and toward better management of existing supplies. Six cases studies by experts in the field illustrate specific examples of water management issues. I'm absolutly sure that everyone can find something useful in this book, no matter who you are - a novice in this subject or well experienced researcher in optics.
This book is also useful as a reference book on nonlinear effects. I very often find this book in hand.
A quantitative text on nonlinear fiber optics.......2000-08-15
This is a serious book written at a graduate-student or advanced-under-graduate level for the practicing professional employed in designing optical telecommunications systems and components. I don't think the book was written with students particularly in mind, since (for example) there are no examples or problems in the book as typically found in university course work In his introduction, Agrawal says "[t]he book is aimed for researchers already engaged in or wishing to enter the filed of nonlinear fiber optics." As the title suggests, the book's emphasis is on nonlinear effects in optical fibers, as opposed to nonlinear effects in bulk materials.
The first chapter is pretty basic, and is mostly review material that describes things like the index cross section in an optical fiber, material issues, fabrication, chromatic dispersion, modal birefringence (which leads to polarization mode dispersion), non linear refraction and stimulated inelastic scattering. The review here is pretty brief (the chapter has only about 25 pages).
Chapter two develops the mathematics of wave propagation in optical fibers, including the mathematics of mode propagation and basic propagation equations derived from Maxwell's equations. This chapter actually develops several different differential equations; each based on various assumptions applicable to different pulse widths. These differential equations then form the basis for later investigations into various non-linear effects discussed in the book. Chapter two is thus a foundational chapter and should be read and understood completely before moving on. There is a brief discussion at the end of the chapter that describes numerical methods.
Chapter three describes group-velocity dispersion, including chromatic dispersion as well as dispersion-induced pulse broadening and higher-order dispersion and their implications for optical systems.
Chapter four introduces self-phase modulation and self steepening.
Chapter five describes optical solitons (including fundamental and higher order solitions), soliton lasers, and soliton-based communications systems.
Chapter 6 describes some techniques for optical pulse compression using gratings and chirped optical pulses. It also describes soliton-effect compressors.
Chapter 7 is devoted to the subject of cross-phase modulation, chapter 8 to stimulated Raman scattering, chapter 9 to stimulated Brillouin scattering, and chapter 10 to parametric processes, including four-wave mixing, parametric gain, and phase matching.
The book is quantitative, making (as you'd expect in a graduate text) liberal use of mathematics. The level of mathematics, however, should be well within the grasp of senior college students majoring in physics, engineering, or mathematics. The subject, however, is non-trivial, and you should expect this book to present a real intellectual challenge in reading and understanding all the details. I took about six months to finish the book, including time taken to fill in some details in the derivations and to plot some of the equations on my computer.
Agrawal makes good use of figures and illustrations, which I found particularly helpful. The book also has an adequate index that makes the book more valuable as a desk reference.
Each chapter cites a wealth of reference material in the literature so that any subject covered within its pages can be studied in more detail and from the original sources.
I would not make this a first study of nonlinear optics (although it was for me). Rather, I'd look for texts that discuss nonlinear effects qualitatively, and I'd try to expose myself to experiments that illustrate these nonlinear effects to gain a more qualitative understanding before diving into Agrawal's mathematical derivations. With a more qualitative basis first acquired, however, Agrawal's book is an invaluable tool for understanding the most obscure nonlinear effects in optical fibers.
The definitive sourcebook for nonlinear fibre phenomenon.......2000-04-06
This book is the first and foremost reference book on many aspects of nonlinear fibre effect. It is written for non-experts in fibres but is also an invaluable resource for those who are.
It starts off with a quick review of linear fibre characteristics (dispersion, loss, fabrication) and devotes a chapter each to a systematic study of how dispersion without nonlinearity and nonlinearity without dispersion affect pulse propagation. Higher order nonlinearity and dispersion are also covered.
From this introduction, the problem of having both nonlinearity and dispersion present is introduced, leading to solitons. This treatment does not go deeply into the algebraic solution of the NLS equation, but gives a good background of the properties of solitons.
Several other topics are covered which span a broad array of important nonlinear phenomenon in optical fibres under active research. This seems to be the book to buy if you need to know about solitons and other nonlinear effects, and is continually referenced.

Following Bataille's lead, as laid out in his notebooks, editor Stuart Kendall assembles the fragments that Bataille anticipated collecting for his summa. Kendall's introduction offers a clear picture of the author's overall project, its historical and biographical context, and the place of these works within it. The "system" that emerges from these articles, notes, and lectures is "atheology," understood as a study of the effects of nonknowledge.
At the other side of realism, Bataille's writing in La Somme pushes language to its silent end. And yet, writing toward the ruin of language, in search of words that slip from their meanings, Bataille uses language-and the discourses of theology, philosophy, and literature-against itself to return us to ourselves, endlessly. The system against systems is in fact systematic, using systems and depending on discourses to achieve its own ends-the end of systematic thought.
A medievalist librarian by training, Georges Bataille (1897-1962) was active in the French intellectual scene from the 1920s through the 1950s. He founded the journal Critique and was a member of the Acéphale group and the Collège de sociologie. Among his works available in English are Visions of Excess (Minnesota, 1985), Tears of Eros (1989), and Erotism (1990).
