James Grant is the best writer of his generation on Wall Street today. Those looking for a romp or Wall Street Noir might be disappointed. But for a truly literate look at the world of debt, this book not only informs but entertains.

Good pictures, nothing about Milken's toupee.......2007-04-20

there was a very clever quote mentioned in the book by banker Stillman:

"Every American should reduce his talking by at least two-thirds. There is rarely any reason to talk."

Translated into 2007 prices, I would say the fraction should be upped to at least four fifths.

Verdict: not a bad little book if you can look past the author's anti-Americanism

They Don't Mind Taking Your Money.......2007-02-25

Though James Grant is an excellent writer, his florid style lends itself better to the short articles he publishes in his newsletter than to this mammoth history of American credit booms and busts. Having said that, if you slug through the details and the (always entertaining) anecdotes, the book can teach you an immense amount of financial history that has been largely forgotten along the way. Its thesis, in short, is that money has increasingly become a government sponsored fiction that serves to defeat the natural risk mechanisms of a healthy credit market (recall that it was written at the time of the S&L bailout). This historical perspective seems essential if you want to understand the liquid world of serial bubbles we have been swimming in for the past ten years, but it is also dangerous, insofar as it may make you want to buy a pile of gold to put in your concrete bunker.

An excellent how-to book.......2007-01-17

This is an excellent book for anyone who wants to learn how to solve physics problems in the most efficient way, by using patternization instead of rote memorization.
Many physics students complain that they can understand the lectures and reading materials, including the sample problems in the book, but for some reason they have trouble doing the problems at the end of each chapter. This book helps to bridge that gap between reading and doing.

Given Douglas' background there was little question that he would have a story or two to tell. In Mindhunter you get a glimpse of what it takes to conduct good profiling and what an instrumental tool the profile can be. The book covers some of America's most feared monsters and what role the Behavioral Science Unit played in their capture.

Predicting the profile of criminals behind specific crimes is not only an art, after years of on-the-job training but also a very special gift. Absolutely Fascinating - A Must for "Criminal Minds" fans!!.......2007-05-29

I have been hooked on the TV show "Criminal Minds" lately and was so interested in profiling that I purchased this book. At the time I had no idea that the author was the basis for the main character in my now favorite show. Although undrestandably full of himself, this book gives amazaing insight into the criminal profiling world, discusses many infamous serial killers, and delves into an exciting world of criminal psychology. It has made me want to track down and read every similar book!

New Presentation of Old Truths.......2000-08-22

This work uses the new media to present ancient truths. The pictues and video are all colorful and well presented. It deals with five areas of Christian evidence--Archeology, the Dead Sea Scrolls, Prophecy, Sicne and Dinosaurs and the Gospel.

Perhaps the section of Archeology is the strongest. The section on prophecy is perhaps the weakest. Instead of showing the New Testament fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies, the work focuses on prophecies interpreted as applying to the end of time. Since there are many students who would disagree with thes views, it weakens the thesis of the message.

Anyone interested in this type work will find this to be inepensive and useful.
