My Economics Rabbi!.......2004-03-24
Mr. Nelson wrote this book many years ago. It is still useful today in teaching the practicing economist or investment analyst what statistics are useful in predicting economic dynamics. His belief in using statistics that are not subject to revisions was a revelation to me as should be to anyone who uses historical economic data for forecasting in real time.
Simple Explanations of the Big Economic Picture.......2003-09-22
This is a great little book. It explains the basics of economics in terms of the monthly and quarterly government numbers. It teaches you what numbers are really real and what numbers are bogus.

Take Control of Your Student Loan Debt.......2006-07-12
This book is amazing!!!! I have read all of the other books out there... searching for the detailed information that I needed to help me get out of default one step at a time. This book finally did it! There is NO way that I could have rehabilitated my loan without learning how to negioitate with my guareenteer from this book!
Out of date, not detailed enough.......2006-02-17
Needs to be updated, many of the phone numbers in the book do not exist anymore. It is not detailed enough, way too basic. Does not go into enough details about which laws apply to student loans and what the laws are. It was OK, but not great. You can get the updated material at NOLO website, but better to wait and see if they just update the book.
Generalized Information.......2004-01-30
The author has taken information which is available in your student loan packet and from your lender, complied it with inaccuate state information, compiled it into a book and given it a title. A total waste of money. I returned the book for a refund.
Excellent (not perfect) General-Purpose Student Loan Advice.......2001-04-01
I an an ex-lawyer with considerable exposure to some student loan issues. This book still told me things I did not know. I recommend it for people with minor, moderate, or severe student loan difficulties who are not thoroughly familiar with the rules governing their loans, or who are looking for new ideas on how to deal with their loans.
This is not to say that anyone should rely on this book by itself. Things often get complicated when you proceed past the general-purpose advice to the specifics of your own case. The primary value of this book is to alert the reader to the overall shape of the problem or solution.
My copy describes itself, on the back cover, as a "substantially updated 2nd edition." Its title page indicates it was last revised in February 2000. This may well be true. If so, I would distinguish "substantially" updated from "fully" updated. The book repeatedly refers to court decisions that are now a number of years old -- describing a 1993 case, for example, as "recent."
In addition, I have some concerns about the book's accuracy. For instance, in discussing the legal defense known as "laches," the author says, "[I]n only one case has a former student defended against a lawsuit claiming laches." (Pg. 7/37.) This is incorrect, and I believe it was mistaken even at the time of the first edition.
I would say that the author also misphrases the state of affairs when s/he says, "In general, you cannot assert the defense of laches against the government." A more accurate phrasing would be that "the defense of laches is unlikely to succeed against the government." There appears to have been some softening on the issue in other contexts in recent years, and other courts reviewing the one case to which the author refers have not generally said that the case -- granting a discharge to the student on grounds of laches -- was decided wrongly under its particular circumstances.
To provide one other example of error, on page 10/13 the author lays down the blanket rule that a student loan cannot be discharged in bankruptcy if it was made by a government unit. This is not what the law says. In context, I suspect the author meant to say that it CAN be discharged in bankruptcy if it is NOT made by a government unit. The book does explain the relevant laws more carefully elsewhere; the net effect of this error will probably be (a) to mislead a few people who do not read those other sections and (b) to confuse everyone else.
The important thing is to use a book like this to gain a general orientation to the issues, and take seriously its final chapter, which offers a bit of advice on how to do your own legal research. If you proceed that way, you will tend not to be confused by the occasional imperfection in general-purpose books like this one (and at this point, I don't believe anyone can help making at least an occasional mistake), and with a fair amount of effort you will probably be able to save yourself the expense and hassle of making obvious, costly, time-consuming errors in deciding how to proceed with your own case.
I have not found another book with anywhere near as much useful information on the subject of handling student loan debt. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is willing to use this book as one should use any legal authority: read it, understand it, and double-check its conclusions.

Book Description
Parasitology continues to benefit from taking an evolutionary approach to its study. Tree construction, character-mapping, tree-based evolutionary interpretation, and other developments in molecular and morphological phylogenetics have had a profound influence and have shed new light on the very nature of host-parasite relations and their coevolution. Life cycle complexity, parasite ecology and the origins and evolution of parasitism itself are all underpinned by an understanding of phylogeny.
This volume aims to bring together a range of articles that exemplifies the phylogenetic approach as applied to various disciplines within parasitology and as applied by parasitologists. Unified by the use of phylogenies, this book tackles a wide variety of parasite-specific biological problems across a diverse range of taxa.
* Includes important contributions from leading minds in the field such as Serge Morand, Francisco Ayala and Mark Blaxter, among others.
* Second in the ISI Parasitology List in 2002 with an Impact Factor of 4.818
* Series encompasses over 35 years of parasitology coverage

Book Description
The curriculum has been restructured so that students will have the necessary fundamental understanding of charges and fields before going on to more complex issues. Qualitative reasoning and quantitative analysis are discussed equally in order to provide a meaningful conceptual framework within which the quantitative work makes more sense. Atomic-level analysis is stressed and electrostatics and circuits are unified. Desktop experiments can be conducted at home or in the classroom and are tightly integrated with the theoretical treatment.

Spoon Feeding EM.......2004-11-18
I like this book a lot as a lowed division physics introduction to electromagnetics. It's quite unique due to the interactive work that the reader is asked to do & to the thoroughness & "spoon feeding" of the subject material. It's clear that a lot of work & careful thought went into the writing of the book which results in a great starter text in what can be a rather difficult subject.
Apparently written by physicists to be used in a physical sciences curriculum, I'm sure anyone majoring in physics would be well served by this work. Speaking from the EE prospective, often it seems the required lower division physics classes include Newton's laws, machines, fluids, gases, heat & light, but a disproportionate small amount of fundamental electrical theory involving the electric & magnetic characteristic of matter. And when they do accent the electrical component, it usually includes delving into circuit analysis & design, which may not be the best way to spend a limited amount of time.
This book, as is stated in the preface "focuses on electric & magnetic interactions on the structure of mater". This is exactly what the EE needs so when they start their EE classes with Ohm's Law, they'll know where it came from. This book works through (with very little math) electric fields, forces & currents in matter, Coulomb' law, electric potential, what is voltage, Gauss's law, magnetic fields, forces & induction, Biot-Savart law, Faraday's law, inductors/capacitors & electromagnetic radiation including a integral set of Maxwell's equations. This is done while always relating back to what really going on inside the conductor regarding to the basic electric & magnetic fields.
Be aware, you are not likely to find a clean transition from this work into your upper division electromagnetic classes. The primary reason for this is the lack of math used here. Also this is a notorious subject for authors using "creative license" to attempt to present their work in a somewhat different form. And in some cases, even renaming classic equations & laws. So if you have been through your calculus including vector analysis & are comfortable with dot/cross products, divergence, gradient, curl, Laplacian, different coordinate systems & the differential form of Maxwell's equations, you may not need this book. But if not, use this work to get clear on the basic interaction of the electric & magnetic fields with mater & don't worry too much about the math now. But be aware, you'll see all this again in quite a different format, and maybe you'll have a better basic understand of what's going on in the circuits.
The best theoretical explaination.......1999-11-10
This book has the best theoretical explainations for almost everytin regarding current, charge and magnetism. It goes to the very deep of what happens inside the wire when current flows throug it. U should have it !
Book Description
This classic introduction to electromagnetic fields, thoroughly revised in 1964 and available here in a one-volume edition, includes an invaluable self-contained section on quantum theory. Problems with solutions. 148 illustrations. 1964 edition.

Electromagnetic Fields and the Theory of Relativity.......2006-03-15
In my opinion, this is one of the best books ever written on the electromagnetic theory and on the theoretical and experimental basis of the special theory of realtivity. The part on the quantum theory mantains the same high standard of the first part, which derives from the well known "Theorie der Electrizitat".
The interplay between theory and experiment, the clarity of the mathematical proofs, even the simple drawings that help in understanding some mathematical points, are at the highest level. This is one of the unfrequent cases in which the notion of "classical" applies in a full fashion. I would recommend this book to all those who wish to undertake, at a University level, the study of the fundamentals of theoretical physics.
Arguably the text where Einstein learnt Maxwell theory.......1998-07-19
Yes, this is the result of a research by Gerald Holton, the great science historian from Harvard. This is the latest rendition of the famous Abraham-Becker, which, in turn, descended from the text by Foppl, where Einstein scribbled his doubts. A great book for anyone, though. Crisp, conceptually very sound. Great discussion, and elegant use of the Helmholtz theorem on vector fields ("if you know the Div and the Curl, you know everything"). Very good treatment of relativistic electromagnetism, perhaps the best, very concrete and tied to experiments. Becker was a great science writer. In this Dover edition you get the bonus of Becker's lectures on Quantum Mechanics, very valuable by themselves. I love this book, and have taught from it many times.
Customer Reviews:
Still a classic after more than fifteen years.......2000-07-02
I left the field of physics twenty years ago, and as a graduate physicist I am now doing social science research into information systems. But I like to stay informed about current developments in physics. And certainly a unified theory of the fundamental forces of nature is attracting a lot of attention from both specialists and laymen alike. I knew that gauge theories are important for a unified theory, and nobody interested in physics could escape the renewed interest through the awarding of the 1999 Nobel Prize in physics to Veltman and 't Hooft. So I bought this classic text of Chris Quigg. Many popular books on modern physics (e.g. Bedersen, 1999) quote this text. By no means I was disappointed. Of course the mathematics is often difficult, but the author is starting each chapter outlining what the fundamental ideas are. And that alone makes the book a good read. The book has nine chapters, and each chapter is concluded with an assessment or a reflection on the contents, which are highly understandable. Many of the problems of 1983, when the book was published, are still open today. It is didactically very suited as textbook or reference book for those physicists wishing to specialize in high energy physics.

Book Description
Interest in the theory of relativistic particles with arbitrary spins is increasing. One of the reasons is that SUSY models require superpartners, i.e. additional fields of particles with higher spins. In particular, it is important to take into account particle with spin 3/2 - gravitino which appears in cosmological models based on supergravity and in the theory of inflation of the universe.
This book deals with fields which possess different spins so, that there is an additional internal symmetry of such schemes. The main feature of theories with multi-spin is that transformations of the Lorentz and internal symmetry groups do not commute each other. So, parameters of the group are tensors but not scalars as in (the more common) gauge theories. This kind of symmetry is also different from supersymmetry where group parameters are not scalars. The difference is that in this case the algebra of generators of the symmetry is closed without adding the generators of the Poincaré group. Consideration of schemes of fields with multi-spin possess some attractive features and avoid some difficulties; but the price of this is the presence of the indefinite metric. It should be noted that some quantum theories of gravity also require the introduction of an indefinite metric. The localization of parameters of the internal symmetry group leads to the gauge fields and field interactions. In Part II solutions are found for equations for particles with different spins in external classical and quantized electromagnetic fields, as well as the interaction of fields with multi-spin with external electromagnetic fields of different configurations.

Book Description
Presents a timely, multifaceted examination of electromagnetic fields, including the physical characteristics of environmental electromagnetic fields, intrinsic biological fields, health-related risks, therapeutic applications, and transduction mechanisms. Examines the signal-to-noise problem of biological effects due to low-intensity electromagnetic fields. Describes the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms of interaction of electromagnetic fields with cells. Proposes a mechanistic chain of causality which links the physical transduction to cellular processes.
Product Description
The evaluation of electromagnetic field coupling to transmission lines is an
important problem in electromagnetic compatibility. The use of the transmission line (TL) approximation theory has permitted the solution of a large range of problems (e. g. lightning and EMP interaction with power lines). However, the continual increase in operating frequency of products and higher-frequency sources of disturbances (such as UWB systems) makes TL basic assumptions no longer acceptable for a certain number of applications. In the last decade or so, the generalization of classical TL theory to take into account high frequency effects has emerged as an important topic of study in electromagnetic compatibility. This effort resulted in the elaboration of
the so-called "generalized" or "full-wave" TL theory, which incorporates high frequency radiation effects, while keeping the relative simplicity of TL equations.
This book is organized in two main parts. Part I presents consolidated
knowledge of classical transmission line theory and different
field-to-transmission line coupling models. Part II presents different
approaches developed to generalize TL Theory.

Book Description
This book in two parts delivers a thorough derivation of nonrelativistic interaction models of electromagnetic field theories with thermoelastic solids and viscous fluids, the intention being to derive unique representations for the observable field quantities.
Part I, a revised and updated version of LNP 88 "Field Matter Interactions in Thermoelastic Solids," investigates the foundations and the equivalence of various formulations of the interaction of the electromagnetic field with thermoelastic solids in the classical continuum physics limit, while Part II extensively surveys two major fields of applications, namely, magnetoelastic instabilities and vibrations, and electrorheological fluids.
This volume is intended for and will be useful to students and researchers working on all aspects of electromagneto-mechanical interactions in the materials sciences of complex solids and fluids.

Book Description
Shells, leafwork, picture frames, hummingbirds, wallpaper decorations, hems of clothing—such are the examples Kant’s Critique of Judgment offers for a “free” and purely aesthetic beauty. Menninghaus’s book demonstrates that all these examples refer to a widely unknown debate on the arabesque and that Kant, in displacing it, addresses genuinely “modern” phenomena. The early Romantic poetics and literature of the arabesque follow and radicalize Kant’s move.
Menninghaus shows parergonality and “nonsense” to be two key features in the spread of the arabesque from architecture and the fine arts to philosophy and finally to literature. On the one hand, comparative readings of the parergon in Enlightenment aesthetics, Kant, and Schlegel reveal the importance of this term for establishing the very notion of a self-reflective work of art. On the other hand, drawing on Kant’s posthumous anthropological notebooks, Menninghaus extrapolates an entire Kantian theory of what it means to produce nonsense and why the Critique of Judgment defines genius precisely through the power (as well as the dangers) of doing so.
Ludwig Tieck’s 1797 rewriting of Charles Perrault’s famous Bluebeard tale (1697) explicitly claims to be an “arabesque” book “without any sense and coherence.” Menninghaus’s close reading of this capricious narrative reveals a specifically Romantic—as opposed, say, to a Victorian or dadaistic—type of nonsense. Benjamin’s as well as Propp’s, Lévi-Strauss’s, and Meletinskij’s oppositions of myth and fairy tale lend additional credit to a Romantic poetics that inaugurates “universal poetry” while performing a bizarre trajectory through arabesque ornament, nonsense, parergonality, and the fairy tale.
