After unification large amounts of money were spent to retrain the East Germany labour force in order to ease the transition to the new market economy. This book uses microeconometric methods and individual data to evaluate the impact of these training programmes on the participants' labour market situation. It discusses the appropriate evaluation methodology as well as the effectiveness of the actual programmes for the individual participants. The empirical results suggest that the public sector sponsored training programmes were fairly ineffective. In contrast, the training organized and paid by the enterprises caused considerable earnings growings.

First of all, why wouldn't an author promote their other books?

Every author does this. I think the people complaining here are the same type of people that expect Tyler to do the "thinking" and "investing" for them while they sit around on the sofa complaining and watching bad TV.

This book has very useful tips and hints. It is useful in conjunction with other study material. Yes, Mr. Hicks does endorse his own products - but wouldn't you? No one forces you to buy anything. It's not a map showing you how to, rather it is a guideline showing you what YOU can do. Don't buy it if you think that after reading it you'll be able to run out there and become a millionaire. Rather get it to supplement other real estate materials. If you are willing to work for what you want, then this book is great.

Estrogen issues.......2004-07-09

When I read the negative reviews by others, it reminded me of a women's joke that came over the email today..... it was a list of ways to tell if you are having estrogen problems. One of the tongue-in-cheek answers was "when every one around you is having an attitude problem". I think the negative reviewers are greatly exagerating. I enjoyed the book because of the author's positive, encouraging, attitude and perspective, having been involved in the business of loaning money for years. I think his writing reflects optimism that beginners can appreciate. There are numerous helpful ideas, checklists, and formulas. His emphasis on pre-purchase analysis to assure positive cash flow was good, and reminded me of the principle that Robert Kiyosaki teaches about having an asset buy another asset. (Rich Dad's Guide to Investing). I also liked his comments about credit cards. I didn't mind the letters of successes from his previous readers. They added to my own encouragement and determination to press on to garner some financial victories for myself. Rather than a "re-hashing" of his old materials, I would say it's a collection of his most poignant and pertinent tips in one place. I think there's more than $11 worth of information here... definitely worth the price.

My friend...my #$#$!.......2004-04-13

I went out and bought this book after a minute or two "scan" in a bookstore (Yes, I paid retail & tax!...What was I thinking?) A couple of things caught my eye and I left it at that. After about ten pages of the author calling me his "friend"...I realized that I was STUCK with a thick drink coaster. It really is a big commercial for his other writings. It's loaded with testimonials as filler and no true substance...which is what I look for. I missed the boat here! After the first 100 pages, I'm still waiting for some (whatever that is) useful details. Do I take a gamble and finish this thing?

Why I picture a car salesman.......2004-03-15

Unless you want to read an infomercial on the author's other books and products, do not waste your money on this book. The content is non-substantive and goes into very little detail on "how to build zero cash into 7 figures." Hicks gives anecdotal examples of how people who read his books had huge success in real estate throughout the book. I got very tired of the condescending tone of the book and every section seems to start with "If you follow my process, my good friend, Ty Hicks will make you a success." I would've never thought this, but, my good friend, I couldn't wait to go back to reading Kiyosaki's Rich Dad series.

Your average law scool casebook on community property.......2004-07-14

This is your average law school textbook. For the layman (and sometimes even for the seasoned law student) legal cases can be hard to understand. Sometimes the notes at the end of the cases help, but sometimes they don't.

While all cases are going to contain the structure and verbiage of "legalese," some books do a better job than others. This book is about par for the course. If you would like to see an example of an above average legal textbook, check out Constitutional Criminal Procedure by Lexis.

This book helped me understand my community property class.......2004-07-14

What was great about this book was that it was "keyed" to the textbook used in my class. This means that all the cases we covered in class were briefed in this fine supplement.

Casenotes should not replace reading the assigned material in the text, but they sure are helpful in understanding confusing cases and deciphering lofty legal language. Most importantly, the case briefs boil down the law into concise rules of law.

I recommend this book to anyone frustrated with their community property class. It also helped me fill in the gaps in my class outline.

A modern approach to energy and its relationship with the environment. It has a great amount of information on the main subject and also on related topics. It can be used as a textbook, but it also proves useful for the energy professional. Fun to read.

This is potentially a great book, but it needs work........1999-04-16

I used this book to teach a class on Energy Resources one year ago. I liked its completeness, and the fact that he used original scientific literature as references. However, many of the problems were undoable with the information given. This was true even in the first chapter and it frustrated the students. The book was also too long for a 1 semester course.

Written for the layman by a physicist, this is an excellent introduction to energy. There is an explanation of some basic physics followed by a very thorough, very understandable discussion of issues in energy policy today. Written as a textbook, it includes questions after each chapter, plus an extensive set of references. This is the best book I've seen on the subject of energy

Examining the significant influence of the Soviet Union on the work of four major African American authors—and on twentieth-century American debates about race—Beyond the Color Line and the Iron Curtain remaps black modernism, revealing the importance of the Soviet experience in the formation of a black transnationalism.
Langston Hughes, W. E. B. Du Bois, Claude McKay, and Paul Robeson each lived or traveled extensively in the Soviet Union between the 1920s and the 1960s, and each reflected on Communism and Soviet life in works that have been largely unavailable, overlooked, or understudied. Kate A. Baldwin takes up these writings, as well as considerable material from Soviet sources—including articles in Pravda and Ogonek, political cartoons, Russian translations of unpublished manuscripts now lost, and mistranslations of major texts—to consider how these writers influenced and were influenced by both Soviet and American culture. Her work demonstrates how the construction of a new Soviet citizen attracted African Americans to the Soviet Union, where they could explore a national identity putatively free of class, gender, and racial biases. While Hughes and McKay later renounced their affiliations with the Soviet Union, Baldwin shows how, in different ways, both Hughes and McKay, as well as Du Bois and Robeson, used their encounters with the U. S. S. R. and Soviet models to rethink the exclusionary practices of citizenship and national belonging in the United States, and to move toward an internationalism that was a dynamic mix of antiracism, anticolonialism, social democracy, and international socialism.

Interesting Tale Poorly Delivered.......2006-01-04

The history of the USSR's influence on black radicalism in the USA is an interesting one. And Baldwin's choice of 4 prominent black activists/artists to illustrate this is an efficient vehicle for this purpose. However, the author's dense, academic writing style leaves one bleary eyed after a few pages. Needless repetition just exacerbates the teadiness. I found the chapter on Robeson the best just necause she refrained from turgid literary analysis as she had with McKay, Hughes and DuBois, but then, those dudes were writers and Robeson a singer. She does make legitimate observations about the similarities and disparities between the Soviet and Black experiences but I would have liked more hard-core history of these individuals' personal struggles with racism and government oppression. The book would have benefited from a non-academic editor and being half its current size.
