    Book Description

iCon takes a look at the most astounding figure in a business era noted for its mavericks, oddballs, and iconoclasts. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Jeffrey Young and William Simon provide new perspectives on the legendary creation of Apple, detail Jobs’s meteoric rise, and the devastating plunge that left him not only out of Apple, but out of the computer-making business entirely. This unflinching and completely unauthorized portrait reveals both sides of Jobs’s role in the remarkable rise of the Pixar animation studio, also re-creates the acrimony between Jobs and Disney’s Michael Eisner, and examines Jobs’s dramatic his rise from the ashes with his recapture of Apple. The authors examine the takeover and Jobs’s reinvention of the company with the popular iMac and his transformation of the industry with the revolutionary iPod. iCon is must reading for anyone who wants to understand how the modern digital age has been formed, shaped, and refined by the most influential figure of the age–a master of three industries: movies, music, and computers.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice book........2007-08-24

I don't like Steve, but this is a good book, and it doesn't just say good things about him. Very enjoyable reading. If you haven't bought any other books about Apple, get this one first.

    3 out of 5 stars Review: iCon.......2007-07-25

iCon Steve Jobs: The Greatest Second Act in the History of Business, retraces the dizzying path of successes and failures of entrepreneur and life long ambassador of technology Steve Jobs. Authors Jeffrey S. Young and William L. Simon produce an impressing and detailed account of Jobs' life and work which begins with Jobs' adoption and early childhood and ends with his (and Apple's) success with the iPod and iTunes. What lies in between describes Jobs' successes and his failures, his recklessness and his genius. The likeness Young and Simon paint of Steve Jobs is close to that of a hero; and like any great hero Jobs shows the ability to evolve with the use of his great strengths, despite his many flaws. iCon will be of special interest to Apple faithful as well as anyone interested in the history of personal computing or design.

I've just read this book in Russian (here in Russia we had no original book). I really love my Macbook, I love to watch Jobs' keynotes, but I never thought that he is such a strange, strong and discrepant person. Some times while reading I even couldn't believe, that all the story is about the same Steve Jobs I knew before!..
This book is must-read not only for Apple fans, but for everyone, who is fond of computer's history.

    3 out of 5 stars Interesting but..........2007-03-28

to many facts are repeated endlessly and presented in an "E News" fashion and celebrity status report style. I enjoyed the relativly objective critisism about Job's early stint at Apple and eventually even managed to extract usefull "managerial" tips which could become useful.
Overall a nice weekend read. Not to "Heavy" and overloaded with facts
but this is also the weak point.

4 out of 5 stars a book to help you understand.......2000-04-12

This book is good for beginners as it patiently and clearly explains not only how to cite but also the reasons why. Moreover, through the exercises, it makes sure you learn how to cite, it does not merely show you how to. And because it explains the legal system, the book may be valuable in legal research as well. However, some (more detailed) kinds of citation are not available. It is not exhaustive as the real thing (the Blue book) and there are no quick indices to anything so if you suddenly have to review a particular citation, you have to know exactly where it is.

2 out of 5 stars If you're new to keeping scorpions - keep away from this book!.......2005-09-07

I probably have every book ever written on scorpions and can state without any hesitation that this book offers nothing to anyone looking to keep their scorpions alive and thriving in captivity. The ONLY legitimate reason to ever buy this book is for the fine photographs (many of the scorpions in the photos are actually misidentified) that accompany the mostly useless, and to some groups of scorpions, dangerous text.
If you're a novice level keeper or you're looking to acquire your first scorpion then, pick-up a copy of Manny Rubio's "Scorpions: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual".

        1 out of 5 stars Don't bother!.......2000-12-01

With respect to the reader from Chicago, this book will give the wrong information on scorpion species, care and identification. There are no acknowledgments in the book which obviously was not reviewed by experts in scorpion biology. It does have some good photographs, though most of the species illustrated are misidentified. Ms. Webb is known as a tarantula keeper, and probably a good one at that; scorpions she does not know well and apparently did not research the literature when preparing this book.

I was among the reviewers of the book for the above mentioned American Tarantula Society. I recommend reading those reviews for the problems with this book. Further, I am an arachnid biologist who was among several scorpion biologists who reviewed the manuscript for Manny Rubio's book, also mentioned above and available here at Amazon.com. (Read the reviews at the Manny Rubio/Amzaon.com section.)

1 out of 5 stars Poor attempt from a so-called" expert in the field..........2000-11-17

Aside from a few nice photographs that can be cut out and pasted on to a posterboard, I would honestly recommend that the rest of the book be thrown away. I will not go into detail on this book and its problems [there is a published review from colleagues of mine in the American Tarantula Society's Forum Magazine, Volume 7, Number 5 (September/October 1998) on pages 156-159]. TFH Publishing has always set the standard on "what not to do", and this book continues along the same path! There is no evidence that the book was reviewed by other people in the field, especially professionals! I have a bad feeling that many of Webb's scorpions have died in the past...

Now, I am not here to plug another book, but if you're looking for a quality book that is geared towards the scorpion enthusiast/hobbyist, I suggest Manny Rubio's "Scorpions: A Complete Pet Owner's Manual". It has a few minor drawbacks as well, but is far superior to anything that has been published to date on this topic.

My credentials: I am an arachnid biologist.

5 out of 5 stars Scorpions : Keeping & Breeding Them in Captivity.......2000-01-13

Excellent intermediate book on the captive care of these amazing creatures. Detailed information on the various species one might find in the pet trade and their respective charateristics. The author obviously has a great deal of knowledge and experience in raising these animals, and does an efficient job of conveying that to the reader.

            Book Description

Gamma-ray spectrometry is a key technique in the study of the decay of radioactive materials. Used by scientists from a wide range of disciplines, problems can be encountered by the inexperienced user because there is a deceptive simplicity in gamma-ray measurements which can hide significant pitfalls. To resolve this situation, the authors of Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry have drawn on many years of teaching experience to produce this uniquely practical volume, giving comprehensive coverage of the whole gamma-ray detection and spectrum analysis processes. Discussions of the origin of gamma-rays and the issue of quality assurance in gamma-ray spectrometry are also included. Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry is written with the user in mind and has the following benefits: Practical Gamma-Ray Spectrometry will enable all those involved with radioactivity measurements to get the most from their equipment. It will also be of great value to teachers and students in departments where radioactivity is studied, such as physics, chemistry, environmental biology, archaeometry and radiochemistry.

So far the appearance of the vessel differed in nowise from that of an ordinary transport. But in the waist a curious sight presented itself. It was as though one had built a cattle-pen there. At the foot of the foremast, and at the quarter-deck, a strong barricade, loop-holed and furnished with doors for ingress and egress, ran across the deck from bulwark to bulwark.

5 out of 5 stars An Australian Classic.......2006-08-30

For the term of his Natural Life is an Australian classic, a tale of inhumanity and suffering during Australia's early colonial history.

The more I read this, the more I see in it the emerging attitudes that play a very large part of Australian culture today. To start with, there is no significant reference to the Aboriginal people, the actual owners of the land, they seem to barely exist at all and when they do they are dismissed.

The characteristic disrespect for authority is here of course, for there's no attempt to soften the truth of the degradation and cruelty, it's a living, breathing image of the times. It broke my heart as a teenager for the prisons that Clarke describes in Tasmania and Norfolk Island are the prisons where my 12 year old great grandfather was cruelly tormented.

But Clarke doesn't attempt to persuade us with pity. Nor are we persuaded to to censure. Clarke merely portrays the atmosphere and attitudes of the period.

Please don't confuse the book with the fim starring Anthony Perkins. The only similarity is the title.

In the film, the working class Rufus Dawes becomes young aristocrat Richard Devine. The plot dives to the depths as the dashing young gentleman Devine is wrongly accused of murder and shipped off to the penal colony to suffer under the harsh prison conditions where he resolves to escape and restore his good name. Only the help of Sylvia, the prison Commandant's daughter, can save him. A nice, trite sample of maudlin mush.

Marcus Clarke would be spinning in his grave if he knew of this travesty

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR VISITORS TO TASMANIA.......2003-02-21

This book is a novel that reads like history. It offers interesting insights of the history of Tasmania. This book is an Australian classic. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars An insight into Ausralia's early penal system.......2001-08-16

Clark's writings in this book give you an insight into penal life in Australia's early history. His writing style gives you an empathy with the characters, and his descriptons of the Port Arthur site make you feel as if you are there. Some time later I visited Port Arthur, and Clark's writings came back. When you have been there you realise how good the book is.

              4 out of 5 stars A truly inspirational book........1999-09-17

I am planning a trip to Tasmania and it was recommended that I read Clarke's epic tale. It is one of inspiration and great character and describes life, the conditions and environment in which those men and women suffered. I am particularly looking forward to visiting Sarah Island and Port Arthur so I can get a taste of what those people (both innocent and guilty) had to endure. Definately recommended reading for those planning a holiday to Tassie!

4 out of 5 stars Compelling story of tragic period in history.......1997-06-21

I read this book while in and returning from Tasmania. I found it to be a much better insight into the history and mentality of Australia than any tour/travel planner I read. It has survived the test of time because it is so accurate in its portrayal of the penal transportation system. It also serves to show that the recent tragedy at Port Arthur Tasmania is minor and almost insignificant if it is compared to what the "civilized" british empire performed at the same location

One of the great classics of Australian literature, For the Term of His Natural Life, is a story of inhumanity and suffering, of whips and chains and torture racks. But though no attempt is made to soften the truth of the depths of degradation to which men sank in the harsh dark days of our convict past, Marcus Clarke's masterpiece is not a bitter book. It is filled with life and peopled with unforgettable characters: Frere, the magnificent barbarian; Sarah Purfoy, aglow with colour and vitality, attracting men as moths to light; John Rex the consummate villain; gentle, sweet natured Sylvia... And woven through the story is the golden thread spun from the faith and hope of Sylvia, the innocent child who loves the luckless Rufus Dawes, condemned to transportation for life for a crime he did not commit.
