The Seven Stages of Money Maturity, by financial advisor and Buddhist teacher George Kinder, presents a totally original look at the ins and outs of individual economics. Drawing on timeless spiritual wisdom in addition to modern fiscal doctrine, Kinder deftly combines the philosophical and the practical to help readers broaden their understanding of the overall role that money plays in life from childhood onward--and, more importantly, put themselves on firmer footing with it today.
Most financial advisors and books about money approach finance as if it were simply a skill to learn, the same sort of thing as hitting a fastball or speaking French like a diplomat. Money maturity does include skills, such as understanding investment options and using a budget effectively, but it goes much deeper, to the feelings, the heart, and, yes, the soul.
By following three composite characters throughout the book and examining their experiences through the prisms of his own background and development, Kinder explains how to evolve naturally through these seven specific states (innocence, pain, knowledge, understanding, vigor, vision, and aloha) to achieve both financial and personal security. --Howard Rothman

    Book Description

Discover a powerful new way to look at your money and your life.

Where do our attitudes about money come from--and how do they influence our lives? How can we approach financial issues with honesty and without fear?

In this groundbreaking book, renowned Buddhist teacher George Kinder, a Harvard-trained certified financial planner, demonstrates how we can literally transform our lives emotionally and financially by achieving "money maturity"--a full understanding of the spiritual and psychological issues surrounding our money lives.

Drawing on ancient Buddhist wisdom and his years of financial practice, Kinder has created a revolutionary program that guides us through the Seven Stages of a revolutionary journey--one designed to help us uncover the roots of our attitudes about money, and attain true peace, freedom, and security in our financial lives. Learn how to:

Understand feelings that impact taking financial action
Develop understanding and knowledge about money
Eliminate stress and anxiety around money
Let go of old patterns and painful habits
Approach money tasks with energy and optimism
Design a money life that is fulfilling both financially and spiritually

Filled with practical information, market-tested, wealth-building skills, personal success stories, and spiritual guidance, The Seven Stages of Money Maturity is an invaluable guide to a rich--and richly lived--life.

    1.        Innocence--The childhood state we are born in, devoid of any concept of money
    2.        Pain--The discovery that we have more money than some and less than others, and that work is necessary to make a living
    3.        Knowledge--The intellectual task of learning financial techniques such as saving, budgeting, and investing
    4.        Understanding--The emotional work done in coming to terms with feelings around money, such as greed, envy, and resentment (which are rooted in Pain)
    5.        Vigor--The energy (physical, emotional, and spiritual) that must be expended to reach financial goals
    6.        Vision--The direction of Vigor outward toward the health and welfare of communities, with or without profit motive
    7.        Aloha--The compassionate goodwill that allows one to use money to perform acts of kindness without expecting anything in return

Using THE SEVEN STAGES OF MONEY MATURITY, readers will understand each encounter with money as a step toward awakening; a lesson about the relationship they share with others as well as with the self. -->

5 out of 5 stars Money and your mind/body connection.......2007-05-15

I do like the approach of money as a journey rather than the books that ask you to look for your money personality and seek to put you in a category. They will change if you are growing and changing and isn't that the point?
I particularly was moved by his description of his childhood awareness that some of us have more than others and how that leads to the end of innocence..along with the description of the time his parents taught him gratitude about the flute he was given as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Guide to Understanding How We Can Improve Our Lives.......2006-07-23

Kinder offers some real insight and wisdom here, as he gently guides us into a deeper understanding of our relationship with money--and how past experiences shape our views and may limit our ability to shape our own destiny. More than a simple "how-to" handbook so often found in the financial press, this book explores our motivations and what steps we might take to fulfill our deepest goals and achieve our most profound dreams. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The Psychology of Money.......2006-04-18

In January 2002 my wife and I hit rock bottom financially. We owed nearly $45,000 in credit card debt alone, another $20,000 in student loans, and another $30,000 or so in car loans, personal loans, etc. We rented a ramshackle house and had no savings or investments whatsoever. And yet I found it impossible to pass up a bookstore without a new book in hand or the latest CD. I had read a number of books about personal finance, but I understood that there was something deeper that I was looking for. Something that would help me to understand the psychology of money, to understand why I made the choices that I made.

Fortunately, I came across an ad for George Kinder's book in Harvard Magazine in 2002. As a Christian I can understand that some might be put off by Kinder's infusion of Buddhist philosophy throughout the book. I studied East Asian studies in college, so I wasn't that bothered by it. In fact, I think Kinder's metaphor of the seven chakras, or energy centers, correlated perfectly with the seven stages of money maturity.

The main problem with most popular approaches to teaching personal finance is that they start at level four or five. But you haven't addressed the fundamental issues of levels one through three. This gap helps explain why the average American household has a negative net worth. We are doping ourselves at the mall with our credit cards!

Four years after reading the Seven Stages we have paid off all of that old debt (no bankruptcy!), own our own home, and are closing in on six figures liquid net worth. Robert Kiyosaki's Rich Dad, Poor Dad helped me to realize that The Matrix had me in its grasp; Kinder helped me see the code.

4 out of 5 stars Explores your values when it comes to making financial decisions.......2006-03-16

There are some great basic finance books out there, the ones that tell you what percentage of your income to save for retirement, how much to invest and so forth. Many of them will put you on the road to financial security. I'm a fan of those and of becoming knowledgable about wise use of one's money.

But what about your values, dreams, aspirations and goals? How many of them acutally show you how to encompass those into your savings plan? How many actually have you explore how your views of money and its use have been shaped from childhood on?

This book does all of that and by doing so allows readers to have a truly insightful approach to money management. After all, with self-understanding comes wisdom and the opportunity to make informed decisions.

Like any skill, those who are truly wise and powerful money managers are often intuitive and their wisdom comes from a very clear understanding of how and why to make decisions. Even more importantly, they make decisions that are right for THEM.

This book is great but if you are looking for detailed, "how to" info that doesn't take your personal values and spiritual side into account, you may not like this one. But I think it is an excellent supplement to all the other books out there, especially if you're pretty knowledgable about the basics (retirement planning, investing, home ownership, planning for kids, college, etc). There is a spiritual dimension to how we use and spend our money, well worth exploring!

5 out of 5 stars Profound AND practical companion / guide to making peace with money.......2006-01-05

I love this book! You will, too, if you are looking for a profound, yet highly readable and practical guide to finding harmony in your "money life." As a psychologist, his "Seven Stage" model rings true to me; as a person seeking harnmony in my own money life, his teaching stories are both inspiring and informative, and his practical information about how money "behaves" to be enlightening. I have found this book to be an enlightening, compasssionate companion on my path to money maturity. As you know, there is a welter of books out there on self-help around money; this one is unique, and stands tall in that crowd!

      Download Description

Consumer protection law in the age of globalisation poses new challenges for policy-makers. This book highlights the difficulties of framing regulatory responses to the problem of consumers' access to justice in the new international economy. The growth of international consumer transactions in the wake of technological change and the globalisation of markets suggests that governments can no longer develop consumer protection law in isolation from the international legal arena. Leading scholars consider the broader theme of access to justice from socio-legal, law and economics perspectives. Topics include standard form contracts, the legal challenges posed by mass infections (such as mad-cow disease and CJD), ombudsman schemes, class actions, alternative dispute resolution, consumer bankruptcy, conflict of laws, and cross-border transactions. This book demonstrates that advancing and achieving access to justice for consumers proves to be a challenging, and sometimes elusive, task.

        Book Description

Emphasis in this second volume of Advances in Downy Mildew Research is on the biology of compatible interactions, forecasting and epidemiology, host specialisation, genetic variability amongst pathogen populations, novel methods for detection and systematics, and induced resistance. Two chapters focus on the related oomycete Albugo candida, which shares many pathogenic characteristics with the downy mildews and provides a valuable comparative pathosystem. Contributions on specific downy mildews include Bremia lactucae, Peronospora destructor, Peronospora sparsa, Peronospora viciae, Plasmopara halstedii, Plasmopara viticola, Pseudoperonospora cubensis and Sclerospora graminicola. Review chapters on compatibility, forecasting and systematics consider a broader range of downy mildew fungi, and compare them with other oomycete and biotrophic pathogens. The book is relevant to anyone with an interest in these unique biotrophic pathogens, either in their own right as causes of damaging diseases or as model systems for research on host-pathogen interactions. It should be read by: students, teachers and researchers in academic and research institutes; research and development personnel in the agrochemical industries; agricultural and horticultural advisers, and other extension workers.

                5 out of 5 stars A dilettante's delight!.......2007-06-30

These three volumes in one are an easy-reading, chatty introduction to the world of physics. Asimov's inclusion of the historical background along with the development of specific concepts contributes to its readability. Asimov also keeps scientific jargon and mathematical equations to a minimum. I can't speculate on the value of "Understanding Physics" to the serious student of physics, but for a dabbler who wants to know more about how things work, or to have a handy reference, it is ideal.

5 out of 5 stars Fully Explains Fundamental Relationships.......2006-06-23

Once you learn how to read deeply (and maybe a few years after freshman physics), this is THE book to read. Asimov has a science-type Ph.D. from Columbia (the Ivy league one) and he is a wonderful story teller. Still, I tried to read this book in high school and it meant nearly nothing to me then. But I tried again in graduate school (after completing ABET ECE degree) and was rewarded. Each and every page gave me just what my mind and heart desired. It was a heavenly experience to have even a synthetic relationship/conversation with Asimov and his mid-20th century Columbia Univeristy physics department. By the way, I'm pretty sure L. Ron Hubard's cult and its followers ripped off MEST (Mass, Energy, Time, and Space) from this book.

5 out of 5 stars The best place to begin the study of physics.......2004-07-18

Although I took a full year of physics in college, I learned most of my physics from the three books in the Understanding Physics series by Isaac Asimov. As proof, I offer the fact that I scored a respectable 8 on the physics section of the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT) that I took before starting the college physics class. My study of physics in preparation for the test began when I purchased and read the three books in the series. When I was in the physics class, I understood all of the ideas; the only part that presented any difficulty was applying calculus to the problems.
Asimov has a knack for writing about science in a way that allows for the rapid and complete learning of the concepts. This book covers the basics of the fundamental particles that make up atoms, how they interact with each other and their basic properties. Unlike many other authors, Asimov does not hesitate to use equations in his explanations. I commend him for this, as you cannot learn physics without equations and the temptation to avoid them was no doubt strong. If you want to learn the fundamentals of physics, the three-volume Understanding Physics series by Asimov is the best place to start.

                4 out of 5 stars Very good.......2004-04-03

Asimov actually explains and makes sense out of physics. I am Physics major, and Asimov explains about as well as anyone. This is way better and more accessible than that dumb Feinman lectures series. Asimov is a very gifted writer and thinker. Although I differ with him on alot of his conclusions about life and existence, pretty much anything he writes is good. A another Good Physics book is Einstein's "Evolution of Physics".

This book is an excellent summation of the progress made in discovering sub-atomic particles, It may not now be up to date (it was printed in 1991), but I would not forgo the learning within, or the Asimov method of presenting it. Isaac Asimov specialty was explaining difficult subjects to his readers. He did an admiral job keeping the subject matter interesting. Each short chapter is dedicated to a particle, ex. mesons, quarks, bosons. Each chapter also gives a little historical background of the search and discovery behind each particle and how it fits within the sub-atomic world. Nuclear physicists may have progressed far beyond this by now, but this is still a good book for piecing together the subatomic puzzle of particles.

1 out of 5 stars Completely Dry and Uninteresting.......2002-10-08

Isaac Asimov's Atom is an interesting premise for a book...the evolution of the smallest aspect of an element which is the basic aspect of life and existance. Asimov intends to take the reader across centuries explaining simply, interestingly, and concisely how this fascinating little thing came to be as it is and why it is so important.

However, Asimov explains the atom neither simply, interestingly, nor concisly. Let me rephrase...Asimov's writing style is extremely dry in this book. It is understandable to a certain extent...the book is divided into 51 small sections of between 3 to 7 pages each. If a reader attempts to read over more than one or two of these sections at a time, it becomes nausiating. Explainations of experiments are extremely difficult to understand, and the book drags and lacks any interest whatsoever in many parts.

Redeemed by interesting tidbits, it is easy to understand how a science buff can enjoy this and understand it, but to the average reader, the prose is uncommonly dull and loquacious. The diverse gallimaufry of scientists govered begin to combine in the mind, and it is difficult to remember who did what.

As the book stretches onward passed the three-hundered page mark, the reader is constantly questioning "Why do I care? I have learned what the atom is today, and how it came about originally. Why on earth to I need to know all the errors in between?"

In conclusion, Asimov's Atom: Journey Across the Subatomic Cosmos may be perfectly suited to the literature taste buds of a science afficianado, but nobody who takes no particular interest in the subject should be forced to read such a dry and useless account. Asimov has talent, which he beautifully and powerfully demonstrates in certain parts of Atom and in almost every single other work he has written, but here his talents need to be reserved for the most scientific amongst us. It is unfortunate that so many Chemistry teachers require this book as reading for their class. This difficult narrative will only succeed in fogging the perception even more.

This is an excellent book for students of almost all ages (14 up). I was 14 when I read it, with no education in atoms, and I understood it perfectly. Asimov writes in a way that is extremely provocative and very informative. I highly recommed this book.

This book reveals a part of Isaac Asimov that I have never realized before: the Detective. His journey across the subatomic cosmos is that of a detective, whether he is analyzing electrons, light, neutrons, quasars, antimatter, neutrinos, interactions, or the universe. He presents a mystery, a problem, that stumps the experts in physics or chemistry or mathematics, and then begins eliminating the suspects one by one until the only possible solution is revealed. He has done the same thing in his science fiction, for example in his Foundation Series and Robot Series (see my Amazon.com reviews of various of his books) - in fact, the heroes of his robot series were a human detective and a robot or android detective. I grew up reading the science fiction of Asimov and/or his colleagues, and my wife Dr. Marleen Josie Doctorow used Asimov's book on psychological science fiction in her university psychology courses. Asimov, by a remarkable coincidence, was married to a psychiatrist, Dr. Janet Jeppson, and she continued his Foundation Series after his death via his Estate and the great writers Brin, Bear, and Benford. When I read the front page headlines recently in newspapers attacking psychiatrists and psychologists like Freud, I wonder whether the journalists realize that all of science and medicine and journalism involve detective stories. The greatest detectives also have something called intuition, which also goes by the name of ESP, and in theology is considered to be a quality of the Divine. Asimov had it, Saint Thomas Acquinas had it, the Old Testament Prophets and Mohammed had it, Buddha had it, Einstein had it, Field Marshall Montgomery had it. It leaves us humble and grateful for the miracles of our and their existence.

I'm a hobby science-fiction writer, and you can't do that plausibly without knowing the facts of the subject matter. Everything I know about physics I drew from this book and from Richard Feynman's "Six Easy Pieces," which I also recommend. When I sell things and you like them, you'll be able to go to this book and say, "so that's where he got it from."

Even though this book was written forty years ago and there have been many advances in chemistry since then, it remains the best introduction to chemistry available. Isaac Asimov is still the best explainer of science that has ever existed and he was never better than when writing this book. Although Asimov was capable of writing in all areas of science, he was trained as a chemist, so in this case he was writing about the subject that he knew the most about.
The understanding of the elements that led to the modern periodic table did not come easy. There were many false starts and partial truths that were presented, refuted and remodeled. Asimov takes you through all of this historical record, emphasizing that scientific "truth" is an evolutionary process. The "Aha!" moment is a very rare event in science. Most discoveries are the results of months or years of painstaking research and few are definitive. Some of the main advances started as intelligent suppositions that were not verified for decades.
Written at the level of the intelligent high school student, this is the best introduction to the intellectual struggles that forged (literally and figuratively) our current knowledge of chemistry.

I've had my copy of this since high school. Most of my other books are gone, but I still have this one. It's a very excellent overview of the developments in chemistry, from the early days of discovery, from Lavoisier, to Mendleev, to the Atomic Age. A wonderful book that livens up what can be a very dry subject.

                4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-12-17

A great accompanyment to a high school chemistry course. High school chemistry is so abstract, that one wonders how chemists ever thought to look at the things they studied to develop the field. Asimov explains what concrete problems and concerns led to the development of each important discovery, situating it in terms of what was understood at the time, and making the logic of the field's development clear. Easy enough for the non-scientist, but with lots of material I never learned in my science education. Asimov was a great popularizer!

This book was one of polymath Asimov's prodigious outputs. He takes us through long centuries of often slow progress in physics. With short but succinct biographies of great physicists. Of these, needless to say, Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein stand out. If you are new to physics, try paying close attention to how Asimov assessed those two greats.

But the book also gives attention to other notables who contributed to physics. From Galileo to Faraday to Maxwell. You can get an appreciation for the significance of what each did to expand our view of physics.

When i first got this book i was worryed about it being boring, and it wasnt. once again issac asimov has put out a great book. He not only puts in the math to tell how and why things happen in Physics he also tell in text so that those whose Trigonomety and above skill arent that great can still understand it. He goes from Falling bodies to light waves to Ions and radiation to anti-particles if you are just starting out in Physics or need some more addvanced info this is the book to read. it however is not for everyone. Some may find it very dry reading. I, however found it very fasinating, and an excelent reference in explaining the basics of Physics.

One of the best introductions to physics ever written. Conscise and plain even for the most novice science reader. Before the "for Dummies" series there was the "Asimov on" series and this was the best of that series. Higly recommended especially for the young person who enjoys science but also good for developing a love for physics in the first place.

Although I took physics in college, most of what I know was learned from books by Asimov. This book is a collection of his essays published in "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction" where the theme of each is physics. In rereading the essays, I was taken back to the heady days when I needed to learn a great deal of physics in only a few days. This was accomplished by reading Asimov's books and I managed to learn enough to handle the problems.
The collection is well-suited to anyone with an interest in physics or a teacher who wants to introduce the fundamentals of a point without yet delving into the rigor that requires detailed formulas. As always, Asimov has written with a clarity that textbook authors are either unwilling or unable to achieve.
In my many experiences as an educator, I am often asked for "simple" references about various topics. When the topic is science, I always recommend the writings of Asimov and when the topic is physics, this is the first book I suggest.

This book is very readable (except in a few technical spots) and very interesting. It explains some aspects of physics, which are normally very hard to understand, into plain English for the rest of us that aren't physic's majors.
