An okay update, a little more legal now............2002-09-07
Books for law students get updated at least every five years or so. This book is an update of his first book, this time including "Romer v. Evans" and the St. Patrick's Day cases. When the first edition came out, it was revolutionary. Now, Eskridge, Hunter and many others have published gay legal texts. This new edition still has classic non-legal writings from gay studies. So it's still not just a legal text, but an anthology. It has useful facts in it. Basically, I'm not blown away by this book, but it would be a good thing for gays, both inside and out of the law, to own.

This book is the first to examine sexual orientation from the viewpoint of international human rights law. It does not simply `create' a platform of rights and argue for their `introduction' in human rights law. Rather, it examines how extant international norms should be construed to include rights against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, including rights of privacy, equality, speech, expression, and association. It raises questions of cultural relativism, religious faith, social science, and legal theory. It will be of interest to international jurists, human rights organizations, gay rights organizations, constitutional scholars, and anyone interested in expanding the role of international human rights law as a formidable adversary of persecution and discrimination throughout the world.

Sexual Orientation: A Human Right.......2000-03-30
Eric Heinze's book on sexual orientation and human rights is great. It includes extensive theoretical analysis of both sexual orientation and the concept of rights. It then exmines rights that are of particular relevance to sexual minorities - personhood, privacy, liberty, and equality. Other rights are dealt with more briefly, such as the right to free speech and expression, rights of association, employment rights and so on.
The underpinning of the book is clearly liberal, rather than radical. Heinze is not arguing for any new rights associated with sexuality, he is seeking only entry into the existing set of rights accepted in international human rights law (what he calls "extant rights"). Because of Heinze's insistence on using only extant rights and on the principle of "strict egalitarianism" (ie formal equality), he argues that certain areas of discrimination that are of great importance to lesbians and gay men - in particular, discrimination in the area of family and relationship recognition - cannot be addressed under a human rights paradigm.
This, in my view is the central weakness in Heinze's work. He adopts such a narrow view of equality that he excludes some of the most important areas of life form the scope of rights protection - yet he does so unneccessarily. Even if one accepts that equality is the appropriate framework for viewing lesbian and gay rights, it is not difficult to make an argument that discrimnation in the area of family law violates the right to equality that lesbians and gay men ought to enjoy. And I also challenge Heinze's over-reliance on the right to equality; while equality is obviously useful and important, it is not the only right that offers us some room ot fight to justice and fairness in society.
My disagreements with Heinze's approach aside, his book is extremely thorough. Like Robert Wintemute in "Sexual Orientation and Human Rights", Heinze canvasses jurisprudence from the US and the European Court of Human Rights, though he does not address Canada. Also like Wintemute's book, Heinze's book is suitable primarily for lawyers, law students, political scientists, and lesbian and gay human rights activists and academics.

A great contestation of the liminalities.......2001-12-20
Professor Colker is a bisexual woman with a wandering eye. Being not-quite lesbian, and not-quite disabled has pushed her to ask questions about the murkiness of categorization. In this book, she dedicates a chapter to the "bi's" of race, gender, sexual orientation, and ability. This is mainly a legal text, but I think non-legal readers will still be entertained. I wasn't bowled over by this book, but I think it is great that someone is speaking of multiracials and bisexuals in the same breath and looking at the grey areas across categories. This book is a must have for various "bi" activists.

Sexual orientation is a topic of intense debate within America's religious traditions. These discussions have had a significant impact on the formation of public policy, as speakers who locate themselves squarely within religious traditions have articulated positions on both sides in recent arguments concerning gays in the military, civil rights protections for gays and lesbians, gay marriage, parenting and foster parenting, and benefits for partners of gay and lesbian employees of major corporations and institutions. This volume, which stems from a 1995 conference at Brown University, aims to promote both academic and public understanding of the different positions that exist on sexual orientation and its public policy dimensions within four major American religious traditions. Writers from within the Jewish community, the Roman Catholic church, Mainline Protestant churches, and African-American churches explore the history and tradition of their communities on same-sex orientation, discuss the moral stance they advocate, and consider the legal and public policy implications of that stance. For each of these traditions, two opposing views are represented, and a respondent frames the issue in a larger context. The book concludes with essays by Michael McConnell and Andrew Koppelman exploring how our society might find a modus vivendi in a state position of neutrality on the moral status of homosexuality. This book will appeal to a broad range of readers interested in these crucial issues, and in the role the religious communities play in these debates, while helping to foster the climate for a more reasoned and civil dialogue.

A Much Needed Survey.......2000-06-14
This is an excellent and much needed survey of attitudes among various denominations toward homosexuality. As increasing evidence bears out the genetic and biological origin of homosexuality, religious groups are being confronted with interpretational difficulties reminiscent of the old Biblical justifications for slavery, etc. Not all religions are anti-gay, furthermore. This is a bit stilted academic writing, but an important step in a somewhat taboo direction.
Prejudice by any other name.......2000-02-10
Despite the effort at "balance," the book caricatures the position of the world's religions on sexual morality. The crucial difference between sexual orientation and sexual action is destroyed. An anti-religious screed disguised as a prim anthology.

A Must Read.......2007-10-01
I highly recommend this book to anyone who questioned the jury's verdict or who thought Michael Jackson was just another celebrity who got away with a crime.
Aphrodite Jones brings in detail the testimony of several important witnesses in the case who proved the prosecution's case against Jackson was weak and desperate.
It was really difficult to put this book down as Miss Jones did a superb job in showing that it was Jackson himself who was the actual victim. She goes into detail on how the accuser and his family could not be believed. There was so much stuff that I did not know about the case until I read this book.
Thank you Aphrodite for finally being one of the few journalists who covered the case to tell the truth about Michael Jackson.

This is one the books everyone should read. Fans and non fans, expect a great narration of Michael's days in the courtroom from a former hater who has understood that truth is far different from what they told us through the media. A must for everyone who goes for the truth.

Can't even read it..........2007-08-17
I have not read any work by this author previously. Her use of punctuation is so distracting to the flow of writing that I cannot continue reading. She has more commas in the first chapter than an entire book might have. The first two chapters are mainly about the author. She reiterates her perceived status in her career to the point of nausea. Enough about you already, just get to the subject of the book!

In Kym Fynn's THUGGED OUT, Delvonte Russell is a twenty-two year old orphaned, crack cocaine street dealer. His goals in life are to become a better drug dealer, and to expand his operation to multiple cities. Because of betrayal in a previous relationship, he does not believe in love and refuses to commit to any woman. He beds as many women as possible and truly lives the life of a street hustler - money, women, violence, and time in and out of jail.
Then Delvonte meets Alecca Adams. Alecca is different from the types of women with whom he normally spends his time. She's smart and has more to talk about than soap operas and trifling baby's daddies. She's college-educated and from a good home. Despite their differing backgrounds, Delvonte and Alecca find themselves immediately attracted to each other and begin dating.
Delvonte and Alecca's friendship quickly progresses from just dating to a committed relationship. Because of Alecca's positive influence, Delvonte begins to make changes in his life for the better. He moves from a boarding house to an apartment within weeks of meeting Alecca, and for the first time in his life, considers how he might possibly earn a living as something other than a drug dealer. Though he doesn't immediately end the game, and in spite of some bumps in the road along the way, Delvonte does eventually become thugged out and changes his life for the better.
Kym Fynn's THUGGED OUT is a page-turning, entertaining, uplifting, and inspirational novel. THUGGED OUT affirms that one can overcome his or her circumstances, no matter how difficult and impossible the task may seem. The novel contains spiritual references that show the power of God, prayer and faith. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and finished it in one sitting. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Fynn.

The book" Thugged Out" by Kym Fynn depicts the whole attraction of the Good girl, Bad boy Stereotype with a twist that makes you want to read twice as fast.
Von the good looking drug slanging entrepreneur with the all women are to be used and discarded personality meets Alecca. A beautiful strong Black woman with a plan in life and a Plan for Von in her life.
Unfortunately for Alecca. Terri and Michey have the same Plan. So who wins? You will have read it to find out. It is definitely worth your time.

Powerful...page turning novel, is a must have! The author uses a no holds barred tactic to keep it real for her readers. The main character Delvonte Russell, is a fine black brotha whose only goal in life is to sell crack and become the biggest dope dealer in his hood. The author uses betrayal, revenge and redemption to address the mentality of life in the fast lane...money, cars and women.
Kym Fynn does a superb job addressing the crack epidemic that has destroyed our black families for decades. She addresses not only the addiction of the user but the seller who gets high from the high of selling their product.
Finally, the author uses her story to give hope to those who have written someone off.
Looking forward to a sequel.
