Calcium, Waves, Gradients and Oscillations - Symposium No. 188
CIBA Foundation Symposium Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0471952346 |
Book Description
Calcium Waves, Gradients and Oscillations Chairman: Michael J. Berridge 1995 Standing free gradients are widespread in living systems and changes in intracellular free Ca 2+ concentration, [Ca 2+] i, are involved in controlling the responses of cells to many stimuli. Imaging techniques have revealed complex patterns of Ca 2+ distribution arising spontaneously or after stimulation of cells by hormones or neurotransmitters. In many cells, Ca 2+- mobilizing agonists stimulate oscillations in [Ca 2+] i, with the frequency of the concentration rises (`spikes') depending on the agonist concentration and the external Ca 2+ concentration. The Ca 2+ spikes are organized spatially as well as temporally, so that a regenerative wave spreads across the cell. Such Ca 2+ waves have been observed in many cell types: in hamster eggs, fertilization stimulates a Ca 2+ wave that spreads from the point of sperm entry to the opposite pole; in Xenopus oocytes, the Ca 2+ signal is initiated at several foci, with the waves spreading out symmetrically to give spheres or asymmetrically to give spirals. Most of the models proposed to explain the initiation and propagation of Ca 2+ waves involve positive feedback, with Ca 2+ amplifying its own release through an action on phospholipase C, generating periodic surges of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate (InsP 3), or through Ca 2+- induced Ca 2+ release. Propagation seems to depend on the regenerative release of Ca 2+ from internal stores controlled by the InsP 3 receptor or the ryanodine receptor. This book features studies of intracellular Ca 2+ gradients, oscillations and waves in various systems. Calcium gradients are best understood in tip-growing plants cells, medaka (fish) eggs and the mould Dictyostelium. Current knowledge of the initiation, propagation, characteristics, functional consequences and physiological significance of Ca 2+ oscillations and waves in heptocytes, in Cl - secretion from pancreatic acinar cells, in heart muscle cells and in neurons is presented. The mechanisms, form and importance of Ca 2+ waves in Xenopus oocytes and in mammalian fertilization are considered. The biochemical basis of Ca 2+ signals can spread as waves from cell to cell, through the action of a secreted intermediate (ATP) or by diffusion of InsP 3 or perhaps Ca 2+, across gap junctions; studies of this process in epithelial cells and glial cells are featured. Cyanide Compounds in Biology - No. 140 (CIBA Foundation Symposia Series)
CIBA Foundation Symposium Manufacturer: John Wiley & Sons ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0471919047 |
Book Description
Cyanide Compounds in Biology Chairman: E. E. Conn 1988 This book provides an international, multidisciplinary approach to the biology and biological chemistry of cyanide and related compounds. It contains contributions by chemists, biochemists, biotechnologists, biologists, toxicologists and physicians. The topics discussed at the symposium fall into four groups. The first consists of three papers on the microbial metabolism of HCN and organic nitrile compounds. Knowledge of this subject has expanded significantly in recent years. The second group of papers deals with cyanogenesis in higher plants. Recent biosynthetic studies, the compartmentalization and metabolism of cyanogenic glycosides, studies of the simultaneous production of ethylene and HCN, and the molecular biology of cyanogenesis are reviewed. The third part of the meeting covered the role of cyanogenic glycosides as defence compounds used both by animals and by plants. A review of qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis of cyanogenic glycosides is included because of the need to know the kind and amount of cyanogen involved in plantherbivore relations and in insectpredator interactions. The fourth group of papers discusses the detoxification of HCN by animals. The role of sulphur in HCN detoxification by sulphur transferases is described; the practical subject of treatment of HCN poisoning is reviewed; and, finally, some nutritional consequences of metabolic interactions between cyanide, sulphur and selenium are discussed. The practical implications of research in the field of cyanide in biology are clear. This book records the presentations and discussions that proved to be a timely forum for the exchange and updating of information and ideas and for the exploration of future developments. Help students master real-world problems as they develop new insight into the physical sciencesCustomer Reviews:
This book is for advanced physics.......2000-10-13
I'm writing the review to point out that the book should be called: "computations for *advanced* physics".
Most of the topics covered in the book are for second year physics, or advanced topics. That's neither good nor bad, it just depends what you're looking for. If you want to find ways to apply computer programs in a first-years course -- this ain't it. There are probably only a few cases in which the topics are close enough to first-year physics to be relevant (multiple waves on a string; contrasting an idealized model of a pendulum with a "real-one").
Having said that, I give the book some pluses for covering a wide range of physics and mathematical topics, and a bit of a minus for writing that can be fairly opaque.
