Not a single good thing to say about this book!.......2006-09-11

This slim volume is filled with unknown catchphrases and undecipherable gibbery lingo. It is clearly the book that get's handed out as an overvue to Coach U's class of the same title. It is in no way a "manual" to stand on it's own.

Most of the "Personal Development" sections are basic check list's regarding finances, physical environment, and emotional wellbeing (question's like, "Is your home neat and clean?" or, "Do you pay your bills on time?"). Some of the books inquiries could be helpful, but there is little, if any, supportive content.

On the back of the book, as described on Amazon, it say's: "Now, for the first time, Coach U, Inc., is making it's complete course materials available in book form." What they don't say is how unusable the materials are without the course.

If you are looking to clean up your own life, or get in touch with your personal preferences about life as you head into a coaching practice, read The Portable Coach by Thomas Leonard. It asks the same great questions, but with support and humor to back you up.

The book reviews the modern tendency to recognize individuals aggrieved by a (grave) violation of their rights as holders of claims to reparation directly under international law. Indeed, the European as well as the American Convention on Human Rights empower the relevant Courts to grant appropriate compensation to any person whose complaint is successful. Under general international law, however, this tendency still lacks solid foundations, although a draft declaration currently pending before the UN Human Rights Commission (`van Boven Principles') would confirm the individual's entitlement to reparation as a matter of international law. Likewise, some US Courts have already tried to entertain suits against foreign States in instances of egregious human rights violations. At first glance, to accept persons victims of grave violations as actors at the level of international law seems to be a big step forward, strengthening significantly the regime of human rights. Yet care must be taken not to lose sight of the advantages of the traditional configuration according to which the State alone is entitled to assert reparation claims in cases where its nationals have suffered injury at the hands of another State. In particular, the consequences of developments of catastrophic dimensions like wars cannot be sensibly settled in the same way as any other tort claim. At the inter-State level, in particular, globalization of reparation is indispensable. To apply the simple maxim that all the consequences of an internationally wrongful act must be wiped out would in many instances be tantamount to negating the possibility ever to make a fresh start after a devastating international conflict.

not just for little kids.......2000-05-15

I am a special education teacher in a middle school and I have used this book to bring the incredible stories of Shakespeare to my students. The activities were easily modified to meet the needs of older students, and I especially enjoyed the retellings of the plays since they contained debate and discussion questions. The students I teach were highly motivated to learn Shakespeare in this interactive way. This book makes Shakespeare accessible to everyone, not just the "highly gifted." My students will never forget the year we brought Romeo and Juliet to life. Now they are able follow the story line, understand the characters, and compare the play to West Side Story in the mainstream classroom. Amazing!

This small introductory volume discusses materials for understanding Shakespeare's life,the Shakespeare legend, the Elizabethan theatre, his company, the editing of the work,the modern view of Shakespeare,the Shakespeare canon,the development of Shakespeare's style. It is by a very well- known and distinguished Shakespeare scholar. I took particular pleasure from his tracing of Shakespeare's stylistic development , how he moved from awkwardness to word- mastery and play to adjusting speech to character to rich thematic development to a kind of masterful art in which character, speech, language, theme , meaning are all combined and expressed in the most overpowering way. Harrison concludes his study on Shakespeare's style with noting that the 'Tempest' contains Shakespeare's true final word to us.

The works of Shakespeare collected in a household are symbols of English culture. In Shakespeare's day the stage was not respectable. Dryden deemed Shakespeare naturally learned. In 1709 Shakespeare was established as a classic by Nathanael Rowe. Pope praised him lavishly. Dr. Johnson wrote his famous preface to Shakespeare. To Coleridge Shakespeare was an emanation of the Godhead.

The life of Shakespeare is constructed from documents, tradition, literary references, and his work. All writers betray their origin. In 1592, age 28, William Shakespeare emerged as a person in English life. Henslowe's DIARY 1592-1602 gives a pretty good account of theater conditions. From 1594 Shakespeare belonged to the Lord Chamberlain's Company. In 1603 the company became the King's Players. His burial is recorded in 1616.

He was regarded as a great writer from the first. Shakespeare studies may be divided into the scholarly, the litarary and the dramatic. Studies have been made of the texts, punctuation, words and terms, poetic techniques, and readers' responses, appreciation. Harley Granville Barker 1910-1913 had the plays acted just as they were written.

Greene, Kyd and Marlowe had all died by 1594. For a short time Shakespeare was the only dramatist with a reputation. Drama is most imediately affected by material circumstances. The average life of a new play was about 10 performances. The Elizabethan actor was a busy man. The company was a fellowship of players. They worked in a share system.

There is a list of the plays with approximate dates and a discussion of the measures taken to establish the Shakespeare canon. In style the best and worst of Shakespeare's immature style appears in ROMEO AND JULIET. THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, two years later, is more advanced. In the first part of HENRY IV he shows he is a master fo the medium. LEAR, 1606, shows concentration of thought in its language. In MACBETH imagery is thickly clotted. ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, 1607, has a sort of resonance. Some see THE TEMPEST as the final and greatest play. In editing the editor's worst difficulties come when there are two or more early texts.

The book is simple and enlightening. The author is a great scholar of Shakespeare and provides a nice overview of the field.
