Book Description

The quest for freedom from hunger and repression has triggered in recent years a worldwide movement toward political democracy and economic rationality. Never have so many people experimented with democratic institutions. At the same time, traditional strategies of economic development have collapsed in Eastern Europe and Latin America and entire economic systems are being transformed on both continents. What should we expect in the countries that venture on the paths to democracy and markets? Will these transitions result in democracies or in new dictatorships? What economic system, new or old, will emerge? This major book analyzes recent events in Eastern Europe and Latin America, focusing on transitions to democracy and market-oriented economic reforms. The author underscores the interdependence of political and economic transformations and draws on extensive local data as part of his analysis. A distinctive feature of the book is that it employs models derived from politics, economics, and game theory. This book will be of particular interest to scholars and graduate students in political science and sociology.

4 out of 5 stars Best political economy.......2006-06-16

I read this book in 1995 and I have never found a better one in analyzing democratization since then. His idea on democracy as a result of "spontaneous compliance" is so powerful that nothing else can actually stimulate more on a research direction for the preconditions of democratization process in countries like China.

It can be read together with his "Democracy and the Rule of Law", which addresses the question of why governments act or do not act according to laws, and interprets the rule of law as a strategic choice of actors with powerful interests (rather than as an exogenous constraint on politicians), and concludes that the rule of law emerges when no group is strong enough to dominate the others and political actors seek to resolve their conflicts by recourse to law.

Unfortunately, Adam Przeworski is later on obsessed with math, statistics, graphs, and aggregate analysis instead going deeper into specific political culture, which is yet another sad example of how mathematical academics continues to ruin more economists and political scientists (States and Markets: A Primer in Political Economy, 2003). The point is, applied mathematics and statistics concern with correlation, social scientists concern with causation. Mathematics and statistics are good tools, but social scientists are not technicians. If all they can do is applying mathematics and statistics without institutional analysis or policy analysis, they are in a wrong career.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......1999-09-07

Adam Przeworski is one of the top five political scientists of the world. "Democracy and the Market" is amazing and should be read by everybody that wants to know why democracies last (or don't). Przeworski is probably one of the few writers that compare the situation in East Europe with the situation in Latin America. And he does it perfectly. A bit technical at times but a very contemporary work of Political Science. A must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated, profound, and interesting!!!!.......1999-06-21

Przeworski's writing is always penetrating. This is the best work that I've ever read in the literature of political economy and comparative politics. Although his approach is too much immersed in rational-choice, he knows the history of political philosophy. Although he is basically a Marx-oriented scholar, he correctly understand what neo-classical theories are lacking. Adam Przeworki is a rare intellectual who combine science with philosophy. is worth buying and worth reading although somehow technical.

    Book Description

This original text on the basics of option pricing is accessible to readers with limited mathematical training. It is for both professional traders and undergraduates studying the basics of finance. Assuming no prior knowledge of probability, Sheldon Ross offers clear, simple explanations of arbitrage, the Black-Scholes option pricing formula, and other topics such as utility functions, optimal portfolio selections, and the capital assets pricing model. Among the many new features of this second edition are: a new chapter on optimization methods in finance, a new section on Value at Risk and Conditional Value at Risk; a new and simplified derivation of the Black-Scholes equation, together with derivations of the partial derivatives of the Black-Scholes option cost function and of the computational Black-Scholes formula; three different models of European call options with dividends; a new, easily implemented method for estimating the volatility parameter. Sheldon M. Ross is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Ph.D. in statistics at Stanford University in 1968 and has been at Berkeley ever since. He has published nearly 100 articles and a variety of textbooks in the areas of statistics and applied probability including Topics in Finite and Discrete Mathematics (Cambridge University Press, 2000), An Introduction to Probability Methods, Seventh Edition (Harcourt Science snd Technology Company, 2000), Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists (Academic Press, 1999), A First Course in Probability, Sixth Edition (Prentice-Hall, 2001), Simulation, Third Edition (Academic Press, 2002), and Stochastic Processes (John Wiley & Sons, 1982). He is the founding and continuing editor of the journal Probability in the Engineering and Informational Sciences, a fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, and a recipient of the Humboldt U.S. Senior Scientist Award.

2 out of 5 stars "Introductory" for a math major.......2007-09-15

This is an introductory book on modern options pricing mathematics, for math major types. If you don't have good knowledge of calculus you won't understand the formulas in the book. The early chapter on probability theory is basic, but there is a big jump from this chapter to the material in the rest of the book. I don't believe someone without a strong math or physics background would understand the chapter on Brownian motion. There are also no solutions given to the end-of-chapter exercises. If you are a math or engineering grad student, you would probably find this book light reading. If you are not, this is not the book for you.

    5 out of 5 stars financial engineering.......2006-11-14

Another good book from Dr. Sheldon Ross. Beginning with basic probability, discusses the concepts of options, Arbitrage, Black-Scholes equation, Geometric Brownian Motion, Utility values, Dynamic Programming etc in a very easy-to-understand manner. This is a very good book for an intro to financial engineering.

3 out of 5 stars It is a wonderful book........2005-12-01

Does anybody know whether the book has a students' manual or solutions to the exercises of each chapter.

1 out of 5 stars Which is worse...the book or the class Dr. Sheldon taught?.......2005-08-05

I was unfortunate to have taken Dr. Ross's graduate level class. He taught directly from his book which was not an elementary introduction to mathmatical finance. If you do not have a strong background in finance or math....buy another book.

5 out of 5 stars Its easy to read!.......2003-07-17

This is a pretty good book for whom doesn't have strong background in financial engeering. It begins from probability and I think this is a very good point to start. On the other hand, you also can know the where the formula comes from because the author use a small space to explain it. It is pretty funny!
One problem, this book doesnot cover all of the importnat topics such as Ito calculus but it is still a good book.

    Book Description

These readings have been specifically selected to further the reader's understanding of the economic approach to law. They focus on the distinguishing characteristics of economics as a way of thinking, as well as comparing and contrasting economic analysis with more traditional methods of legal analysis. You'll also find authoritative notes and commentary. This text is an excellent facilitator of thought-provoking classroom discussions. Other topics include methodology of the economic approach, a survey of basic applications, and critiques of the economic approach.

4 out of 5 stars Mainstream L&E reader focusing on correcting market failure.......1998-08-24

This collection of articles takes an unusual approach to law and economics. In its first two chapters, it gives some theory. It then provides, in the third chapter, a brief overview of applications to property, tort, contract, criminal law and procedure (the basic model). The next four chapters are devoted to 'refinements' of the basic model, to wit strategic behaviour, risk and insurance, information problems and bounded rationality. These core chapters are followed by one on various strands of critique of the economic analysis of law and by a concluding chapter on the economics of family law, presented as the frontier of law and economics. Each chapter has introductory and concluding notes and questions, exhibiting admirable mastery of the law and economics literature.

In the second chapter, law and economics is presented as relying on two distinct models. One is called the market failure model, or alternatively the Pigovian model. The other is the co-operative or Coasean model (explained through excerpts of Coase's 1937 and 1960 articles). I wonder whether these two should be presented as alternative models. The first one is clearly normative: markets can be left alone, save when market failure is thought to occur. In that case a form of corrective intervention is called for. Coase's point appears to be descriptive first: transaction costs explain why interested persons choose particular institutions, from amongst several possible options, for structuring their relations. As against Pigou, he argued that supposed market corrections did not in fact alter matters and indeed that the supposed failure of the market was imagined only.

The chapters on the `refinements' all deal with matters that are particularisations of what were traditionally considered forms of market failure: externalities, public goods, imperfect or asymmetric information as well as monopoly. While this may be sound pedagogically -- start with the basic model briefly, then devote most time to examining deviations which call for particular rules and explain observed legal rules in that manner -- it weds one to a rather traditional approach to law and economics, however admirably the reader is otherwise put together.

The collection devotes no space to public choice or game theory (although it mentions the book by Baird et al.), nor to the Austrian and (neo)institutionalist views of law and economics (although Williamson's work is mentioned in notes). Surprisingly, not a single excerpt of Richard Epstein's work is included, although again his name pops up several times in the notes.

Whoever has even skimmed the Palgrave Dictionary of Law and Economics will surely agree that there is more to the field than is dreamt of in this reader. But perhaps such a solid straightforward approach is just what beginning L&E students demand.

                        Product Description

Time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) is a remarkable technique for recording low-level light signals with extremely high precision and picosecond-time resolution. TCSPC has developed from an intrinsically time-consuming and one-dimensional technique into a fast, multi-dimensional technique to record light signals. So this reference and text describes how advanced TCSPC techniques work and demonstrates their application to time-resolved laser scanning microscopy, single molecule spectroscopy, photon correlation experiments, and diffuse optical tomography of biological tissue. It gives practical hints about constructing suitable optical systems, choosing and using detectors, detector safety, preamplifiers, and using the control features and optimising the operating conditions of TCSPC devices. Advanced TCSPC Techniques is an indispensable tool for everyone in research and development who is confronted with the task of recording low-intensity light signals in the picosecond and nanosecond range.

                          Book Description

On a snowy New England evening in a small college town, Sean Farrell–a hard-drinking, libidinous poet and professor–hosts a Thanksgiving dinner. The eleven guests include two fellow professors (one a novelist, the other also a poet), two of Sean’s former lovers, his lawyer, his housepainter, and his baker. What none of them knows is that Sean is dying. This dinner could be his grand finale.

As food and drink flow, secrets are exposed, tragedies bared, and truths uncovered. “Never could we have dreamed how rough adult life would be,” one character thinks. Yet there is wit and laughter too, in a novel about mortality that is also a celebration of life. With each new book, it becomes increasingly clear that Nancy Huston is a writer of exceptional gifts. Sweet Agony is another impressive performance from a writer whose eye is as sharp as her insight into the human condition is wise.

5 out of 5 stars Dark, engaging, another beautiful read by Ms. Huston..........2005-01-10

Having read and loved The Mark of the Angel and Slow Emergencies, I couldn't wait to read another Nancy Huston novel. Her beautiful prose has always enthralled me, and Sweet Agony was not an exception. The story centers on Sean Farrell -- an eccentric, alcoholic poet who decides to create his own version of the last supper. He invites eleven of his closest friends over for Thanksgiving dinner, where he regales everyone with stories of the wonderful and sometimes poignant times they had shared, and where they also vent their unexpressed feelings of anger, baring harsh secrets and truths. But there is a catch to the occasion. Sean is terminally ill and this could well be his final celebration. There are some twists throughout the novel.

Huston has once again wowed me with a story so engaging and beautiful that it was impossible to put down. This Canadian author's writing is deceptively stark, unmistakably dark. The novel is told from all characters' points of views, jumping from one narrative to another. Yet the multiple narratives did not confuse me in the slightest. Each character possesses his or her own voice, making them all unique. And the conclusion is what I expected from this brilliant novelist. This novel touched me in so many levels and I cannot wait to discuss it with friends. Sweet Agony is a novel that should be savored like fine wine. I cannot recommend it enough. I also recommend her two previous books. They are all wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing and creative.......2003-08-03

I'm surprised no one has reviewed this book. I stumbled upon it a while back and couldn't put it down. There are alot of characters in this book, but you don't get confused by the different perspectives. Instead, you just go deeper and deeper into the story. And in between each chapter...a surprise...I won't give it away. Interesting and insightful.
