                      Book Description

A fascinating story of a legendary dealmaker who masterminded an unprecedented merger

Citigroup CEO Sandy Weill orchestrated many deals over his legendary forty-five year career—none bigger than the 1998 epic merger of Travelers and Citibank to create the international conglomerate, Citigroup. King of Capital tells the compelling story of how this complex man revolutionized the banking world and transformed Citigroup through a combination of mergers and powerplays.

Throughout his entire career Weill has created successful businesses out of smaller, seemingly unworkable pieces; filled product vacuums no one else even realized were void; and forced issues that no one else had the gumption to tackle. His daring dealmaking tactics were never more evident than while forming Citigroup, as he lobbied Congress to deregulate the financial services industry and ousted his co-CEO in a public power struggle. Through an engaging narrative by financial writers Amey Stone and Mike Brewster, King of Capital chronicles the legacy of Sandy Weill that began taking shape in 1970 with the creation of Shearson, was honed during his tenure at American Express, and continues as he leads one of the world's largest banks.

Along with probing Weill's signature business deals, King of Capital traces the path this feared, envied, and admired man took to get to the top. Readers will gain valuable insight into the strategies and tactics of this admired dealmaker-including his ability to turn a workforce into a family, with all the love, loyalty, battles and heartbreaks. What distinguishes Weill from the run-of-the mill executive is a laser-like focus on what he wants, trust in his lieutenants, and incredible belief in himself-conviction that he did not always possess. Weill, cowed by Bensonhurst bullies as a child, hazed as a military school plebe, intimidated by the strong personalities of some his early partners, has defied all expectations to become a CEO whose deals have had lasting impact on global finance and the economy.

Amey Stone (New York, NY) has more than ten years of experience as a financial writer. Currently, she is an Associate Editor at BusinessWeek Online, where she cowrites the daily "Street Wise" column, and is responsible for writing many of the site's lead stories on business trends, technology, and the economy, including several articles covering Citigroup and Sandy Weill.
Mike Brewster (New York, NY) is an accomplished writer, editor and financial services professional. He recently launched a career magazine called Leaders Online.

5 out of 5 stars Evolution of Modern Banking.......2006-12-20

Citigroup is an amazing blend of financial services that has developed over the years into a fascinating company. This is the story of how it all came together from hard work to merges and acquisitions. The companies growth is truly amazing and this is one of the great stories in modern finance. For those who want to get a sense of where investment and banking is headed in the future this is a great starting point. It is written in plain enough language that you do not have to be a finance expert to understand it. If you are a finance expert you will see the possibilities that are occurring and understand what the ramifications of each move were on the industry as a whole. Very well written and just a great book in general.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining but Lacking Any True Gems.......2005-10-28

This book has a particular appeal for two reasons: 1) Citigroup is the world's largest financial institution 2) it describes in some detail, the conflict between two storied CEO's - John Reed and Sandy Weill. Coming from the school of thought that says analyzing great business leaders may lead to my own success, I considered this book a must.

As you should already know, Sandy Weill is the current the CEO of Citigroup and formerly the CEO of Travelers. His peer at Citibank was John Reed, who was subsequently ousted. The conflict between the two is in itself an interesting story. The book contrasts the two, by suggesting Weill is bottom-line-focused while Reed was a long range thinker focused on the future of the industry and implications of technology.

There were a handful of interesting side stories, such as a Sandy's wife's psychiatrist using information gleaned from her treatment sessions to trade stock ahead of Citigroup activities. Others include Sandy's experiences at previous employers as he climbed the corporate ladder.

In short, the book is entertaining. However, there are no amazing themes or profound ideas the reader can repurpose elsewhere.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing..........2005-02-20

I love and admire sandy weill.i purchased this book to learn more about the man and his deal making prowess.although this book was well research, its presentation was what turned me off.i have never read a book so disjointed and dull.it doesnt follow the conventional chronological sequence that most biographies does but skips back and forth from one event to another i.e 60's-to-the-80's-to-the-70's-to 60's again...this goes on and on and on.this can be very very very frustrating. Also i dont think the authors did a good job in capturing the readers since the paragraphs come and go in that fasion throughout the entire book!

All who follow sandy weill's career knows his excellent ex-protege, jamie dimon.I would loved to learn more on Mr Dimon (curently President and COO of J.P Morgan Chase & Co) and i hope there will be a book on him in the future.

All in all, sandy weill is one hell of a guy who has done tremendous things in the financial sector.but if you really want to read a book which is more entertaining (or way better) than this book, then you should read "Tearing Down the Walls:How Sandy Weill fought his way to the top of the financial world...and then nearly lost it all" by Monica Langley. The book by monica langley is way way better and enjoyable. You'll also learn more about Jamie Dimon!!

In conclusion, dont buy this book but the one by Monica Langley.....

                      4 out of 5 stars A recommended read.......2005-01-10

I liked the way Stone and Brewster broke the book into small, interesting chapters. It made for an easy read. I felt like I had a good sense of Weill's character and business style by the end of the book. The only criticism I would make is that the book seemed like an "authorized" biography in that it was overly flattering of Weill at times - like commending him for his restraint in only having three large mansions. Also, like all biographies written during the person life, there needs to be more chapters for events that take place after the book stops. In spite of that, I recommend the book to anyone who likes good biographies of business leaders.

5 out of 5 stars A Talent for Deals and Recognizing Value............2004-08-13

I've just started reading this book and it is most certainly a good buy. The businesswoman in me loves Weill's ability to recognize value where others fail to see it (don't all the great ones have this unique characteristic?); the future wife in me admires his dedication, love and adoration of his spouse, a true confidante and partner in every sense of the word. I really enjoy reading about powerful men who are not afraid of telling the world how much of an intellectual and mental impact their wives are. More later....

                        Book Description

Anarchy and Elegance has been called the most creative book on law school in recent memory (John Jay Osborne, author of The Paper Chase) and A perceptive and insightful inside look at one of America s most influential institutions (Charles A. Reich, former Yale Law professor and author of The Greening of America); No one should go to law School without reading this book, says self-help law publisher Ralph Warner. Goodrich, taking readers through Yale Law s first-year curriculum and culture, demonstrates how learning to think like a lawyer can be both exhilarating and damaging.

                        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Interesting but not convincing.......2005-11-28

Goodrich has an enviable ability to write with eloquence and insightful introspection. His descriptions of his experiences and perceptions at Yale Law are the strongest parts of this account. However, I do not believe he succeeds in his attempt to articulate a need for reform within America's system of legal education and its broader (negative) impact on American culture.

I agree with other reviewers who have criticized the moral outrage in Goodrich's narrative for coming across as contrived. Goodrich's decision to organize the book around 3 acts sort of acknowledges the artificial quality of the metamorphosis of his worldview - from naivete to cynicism to a disenchanted balance between the two. He does seem to exaggerate both the virgin idealism that he had at the beginning of the program and the subsequent dark night of the soul that his legal education thrusts upon him for the sake of telling a gripping story. I don't mind embellishment for the sake of better storytelling, however, he attempts to use this "devastating" experience to support his criticism of legal education. This strategy backfires because it makes his claims for the extent of "damage" that law school inflicts upon students seem unwarranted.

Had he simply written a Scott Turow-autobiographical-1L-in-hell sort of a book I would have given it 4 stars. However, Goodrich's attempt to do more than autobiography - to preach a bit from his soapbox - is what earns the book 3 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and insightful.......2004-04-10

As a current 1L at YLS, I can vouch for the accuracy of Goodrich's account - even down to Guido's "Evil Deity" speech, which apparently remains unchanged 15 years later. In fact, not much seems to have changed at all in 15 years, which is a little daunting given Goodrich's insightful criticism of the state of legal education. This is an excellent book for anyone thinking of law school - both as preparation for the stressful academics of first year, and for the tremendous and disconcerting shift in perspective and thought processes that nearly every law student undergoes. The author's description of the personal costs is a bit overdone at points - I at least have not observed such profound personality changes in any of my classmates - but the basic concept is sound. An entertaining and informative book.

2 out of 5 stars Too much self-righteous moral superiority..........2003-06-02

Considering that Chris Goodrich was a Yale graduate himself, as well as editor of California Lawyer magazine prior to the start of his law fellowship (i.e. he's a smart guy), the man exhibits a striking degree of naivete about how the legal system works. He expresses shock and disappointment that the legal profession is not really about "helping people" or "finding the truth", but rather about doing one's best to represent the interests of one's client, and that whoever can present the best arguments usually wins. Goodrich's view of the law is so overly idealistic that it strains credulity. One can't help but wonder if it is only a manufactured device through which to write a book such as this.

The author goes on at length about the arrogance and pretentiousness of those in the legal profession, yet he himself exhibits the very same qualities in his condescending moralizing against its faults. Studying the law transforms one's soul (and not for the better), Goodrich says, and goes out of his way to let you know he is so much above all that. To be sure, Goodrich raises some valid points and concerns about the profession. But rather than attempting to examine them in an objective, journalistic fashion, he stakes out a self-righteous position of moral superiority, effectively concluding that he's glad he was able to successfully resist the temptation all his classmates succumbed to.

The book was not without its strong points, particularly in the first half. The depiction of life as a first-year law student and the glimpses of the discussions that take place inside the lecture halls were nothing short of fascinating. The chapter devoted to the recruitment of students by law firms was also especially revealing.

However, these strengths were quickly drowned out by Goodrich's holier-than-thou tone. The second half, especially, consisted of rambling editorializing about the faults of law school, without offering much in the way of workable solutions, or without objectively examining why things exist as they do. The book concludes with Goodrich's graduation, where once more he can't help but point out his own superiority. He chooses not to wear the traditional robes and garb of the ceremony, instead donning a suit, then snidely remarking that to him, those wearing the robes appear to be constrained in straitjackets. Once again, Goodrich thinks he is better than everyone else, which ironically is one of the traits he professes to despise the most of those in the legal profession.

5 out of 5 stars The book that everyone should read before law school...........2001-10-19

The kind of people that make the choice to sell their souls and begin their study of "the Law" are often typically the sort of overachieving people that overresearch, and look for ways to win the game several moves deep. As such, they peruse the different "how to do law school" books: Law School Confidential and Planet Law School being the foremost names in this category. That exhausted, they move on to Scott Turow's "1L", which is an autobigoraphical account of his first year at Ha-vad, and from that, and repeated viewings of "the Paper Chase", get a picture of what their lives will soon be like. And often it is an erroneous picture.

This book is one man's attempt to describe HIS 1L year (or his only L year, as he got the one-year M.L.S. or whatever it is called from Yale). This is a tremendously good book: it presents law school as most find it: the amorality, the confusion, the lack of praise, etc. inherent in conquoring that beast. And it's a pretty good read as far goes these books written by journalists posing as professional students. It's a DEFINATE must read for anyone who's making the mistake of trudging off to study these endless rules, but it's an interesting take on our society if you're not.

Totally, this is a book that you should read. I recommend it fully...

                                Book Description

Graduate students in both theoretical and experimental physics will find this third edition of Intermediate Quantum Mechanics, refined and updated in 1986, indispensable. The first part of the book deals with the theory of atomic structure, while the second and third parts deal with the relativistic wave equations and introduction to field theory. Throughout its nearly thirty-five years in print, Intermediate Quantum Mechanics has consistently offered more complete coverage of applications of quantum mechanics than any other single-volume work on the subject.

This is a very useful book, but only for someone with a solid grasp of QM at the undergrad level. The only problem is the terrible type in which the equations are set. Why Addison-Wesley released a new edition without fixing this is beyond me.

                                4 out of 5 stars A good overview.......2003-01-31

That quantum mechanics must be understood by anyone working in any area of technology is now well accepted. Indeed, semiconductor device physics, proteomics, and computational chemistry are just three of the more modern areas where a through knowledge of quantum mechanics is needed in order to make any kind of significant progress. This book, written by two of the major players in the development of quantum mechanics in the 20th century, is an excellent overview of how to do practical computations in quantum mechanics. The book is addressed primarily to the aspiring atomic physicist and spectroscopist, but it could serve well anyone interested in the applications of quantum mechanics, such as those in the aforementioned fields. Due to space limitations, I will only review the first 8 chapters of the book.

Chapter 1 is a brief overview of elementary quantum mechanics, and the authors set down the notation and units to be followed in the book. They state the main goal of the book, which is to solve the Schrodinger equation for an atom with nuclear charge Ze. This problem for one-electron is straightforwardly solved, but for more than one electron approximation techniques must be used, a few of which they mention. Since spin will have to be dealt with throughout the book, the authors include a description of spin 1/2 particles.

In chapter 2 the authors discuss the use of symmetry principles in quantum many-particle systems, pointing out the origin of exchange degeneracy and the Pauli exclusion principle. The authors also give an interesting discussion of the experimental determination of symmetry, particularly their argument for the absence of hidden variables.

In chapter 3 the authors give an overview of the quantum mechanics of two-electron atoms, pointing out that the calculations give six-figure agreement between theory and experiment. Perturbation and variational methods are used to solve the Schrodinger equation for this system, and show the origin of the triplet and singlet levels for the helium atom.

In chapter 4, the authors introduce another approximation technique, the self-consistent field or "Hartree-Fock" method, in order to calculate the excited states for the two-electron atom more efficiently. This approach involves using a variational trial function, called the determinantal wave function, as an ansatz, which because of orthogonality and parity considerations, results in a set of equations, called the Hartree-Fock equations, for the single electron orbitals. The "exchange term" in these equations is discussed in detail, involving a notion of a "nonlocal" potential. The physical significance of the eigenvalue in these equations is also discussed, and related to the famous Koopman theorem. It is proven also that atoms with closed shells leads to a spherically symmetric theory. The periodic table is shown to be a consequence of the Pauli principle and the Hartree-Fock calculation.

An improvement to Hartree-Fock, the Thomas-Fermi method, which does not include exchange, is discussed in chapter 5. Classified as a "statistical method", this method finds the effective potential energy experienced by a small test charge, along with the electron density around the nucleus. The authors show how exchange effects can be included using a procedure due to P.A.M. Dirac, which uses a concept of effective exchange potential, and one due to W. Lenz, which is a constrained optimization procedure, requiring that the total energy be stationary.

In order to remove the degeneracy in the atomic shells due to the Hartree-Fock approximation, the authors view it as a perturbation expansion in chapter 6, with the unperturbed Hamiltonian being the Hartree-Fock central field Hamiltonian, and the perturbation being the electrostatic interaction of the electrons minus a suitable average of it. The search for proper linear combinations of zero-order degenerate eigenfunctions to make the total Hamiltonian diagonal entails the use of the total orbital and spim angular momentum of all the electrons in the atom. Hence the authors outline in detail how to perform the addition of angular momenta in this chapter. The reader can see clearly the origin of the famous Clebsch-Gordon coefficients. This program is carried out in more detail in chapter 7, wherein the authors considers and atom which has an electron configuration distributed over several complete and one incomplete shell. The incomplete shell gives several different degenerate solutions, and this degeneracy can be removed by the assignment of angular momentum and spin quantum numbers to the orbitals in the shell. This chapter is characterized by a considerable amount of arithmetic in computing matrix elements, which can readily be handled by modern symbolic computation packages.

The contribution of the spin-orbit interaction to the level structure of atoms, ignored in the previous two chapters, is studied in chapter 8. The authors also consider the interaction of the electron configuration with an external field, such as a magnetic field. The spin-orbit interaction is not considered in a relativistic framework, but instead is given a "pseudo-derivation", in the words of the authors. The (correct) Dirac theory for spin-orbit interaction is given later in chapter 22. And here again, the matrix elements, and reduced matrix elements, considered in this chapter can best be handled by symbolic computation packages. This is particularly true for matrix elements of vector operators between states of different angular momentum, which the authors shy away from. The reader though can see the origin of the famous Wigner-Eckart theorem in the context of these computations. The Zeeman effect, resulting from the interaction of an electron with a homogeneous magnetic field, is discussed, along with the Paschen-Back effect, which results from the external magnetic field being strong enough to allow the Zeeman term in the Hamiltonian to dominate the spin-orbit interaction. Also discussed is the Stark effect, which results when an atom is placed in an external electric field. The authors show how to compute the energy shifts in this case, using, but not proving, some formulas due to Condon and Shortly.

The "Intermediate" of the title means that you are supposed to have learned your basic QM in a book such as Griffiths' "Introduction to Quantum Mechanics" . Bethe's text then leads you to those parts of QM most successful in applications, especially in atomic structure. The treatment of perturbation theory is very clean, simple and effective. The semi-classical theory of radiation is excellently described and then, in perhaps the best part of the book, is used to review Einstein's derivation of Planck's equilibrium distribution of radiation, explaining the need for spontaneous emmission and motivating the treatment of quantum electrodynamics, outlined at the end of the text. This is a great book. What else could one expect from Hans Bethe, the man who discovered how the Sun produces its energy?

                                  Book Description

This book covers the foundations of classical thermodynamics, with emphasis on the use of differential forms of classical and quantum statistical mechanics, and also on the foundational aspects. In both contexts, a number of applications are considered in detail, such as the general theory of response, correlations and fluctuations, and classical and quantum spin systems. In the quantum case, a self-contained introduction to path integral methods is given. In addition, the book discusses phase transitions and critical phenomena, with applications to the Landau theory and to the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity, and also to the phenomenon of Bose condensation and of superfluidity. Finally, there is a careful discussion on the use of the renormalization group in the study of critical phenomena.

Although it is a little weak in the coverage of all applications of statistical mechanics, my overall rating for this book is excellent. It's comprehensible inclusion of mathematics such as group theory and topology in a typical stat. mech. exposition as well as its superlative treatment of spin hamiltonians are among the reasons for my enthusiastic rating.
