Book Description
"Environmental Economics" provides a comprehensive introduction to the dynamic relationship between economics and environmental policy. The authors offer a broad overview of important issues, including the changing role of economics during a time of increasing environmental concern, the impact of markets and governmental policy, environmental protection through economic mechanisms, and a practical look at how environmental economics are played out in commercial and scientific arenas.

Not a typical cryptic economics textbook.......2006-08-29
I bought this book when I was doing my Master's in Economics. Back then it helped me learn a great deal about environmental economics on my own (without a teacher). It is written in accessible language (not your typical cryptic economics text book), full of examples and honest in the way it presents the information -form this point of view the problem is this way, from that point of view the problem is this other way.
I now also hold a Master's in Environmental Studies and a PhD in Geography specializing in Energy and Transportation issues. For the past few years I have returned to it again and again for reference. While the edition is old (1993), it is still a great basic introduction and has good references for where to go next if you are looking for more depth or a more advanced treatment of the subject.
Propably the best introducory textbook on the market.......1998-02-03
Of the four textbooks on the subject I've been through, this one scores the best credit. Within ecological economics there are two schools of thought. One is basically environmentalist in the sense that views the causes of environmental degradation, as being the economic system AS SUCH. Herman Daly is propably the most wellknown representant of this school. The other school deals with environmental problems as being a 'problem of getting the prices right'. This book is mostly concerned with the latter approach. Several aspects of this book ranks it above average. These are: 1) Although the book primarily deals with the market-approach, it actually covers all aspects of environmentalism, ranging from standard economics to deep ecology, treating each of the in a sober manner, 2) the book is very goos at pinpointing the problematic aspects of different theories, 3) The conclusions are supported by empirical evidence, presented in a readable and realevant manner 4) it really covers the breadth of the field, leaving you with a great overview of the topics you can specialize in, 5) it avoids some of the most common misunderstandings of the field, e.g. by specificly stating the difference between non-property resources and common property resources. All In all: It is a very recommendable book for those who are about to be introduced to the field of ecological economics.

THE BEST BUFFETT.......2007-05-14
i've read all the Buffett books and this is the best of the lot. Also check out Rich Dad, Poor Dad.Rich Dad, Poor Dad: What the Rich Teach Their Kids About Money--That the Poor and Middle Class Do Not!
Great look into perspective on value investing.......2005-08-25
It gives a lot of facts on the accomplishments of Warren's life. Some may be a bit repetative, but are used to engrain the theme of value. If you read it and take the ideas to heart about value in stocks, doing your own research, making good purchases in life (i.e. your home/car in addition to stocks), etc. you can walk away with a lot.
A good read for starters.......2004-10-17
Design of book:
Chapters headings and sections headings are structured to be captivating and clear, making it easy to convey the purposes and meanings of the principles.
Content:
The initial chapters of the book build on some of Buffett's stories and are intended to persuade the reader into following Buffett's principles of investing. You will unfold more of Buffett ways as you read, but most of the essential tips are already mentioned in the first half of the book. The later chapters merely serve as unnecessary elaborations. Principles and examples are also recycled at the later chapters giving readers a feeling that they were reading the book again, before they finished reading.
Buffett debunks the Efficient Market Theory (EMT) by emphasizing on knowing the stocks you buy, buying at a discount and his track records. He also believes that knowledge of basic finances and accounting (GAAP) are necessary to value businesses. However, it will be hard to replicate his success given the difficulties of finding under-valued firms and attaining his wealth of experiences in interpreting annual reports.
For who:
More for first-time readers of Buffett's principles and books, though the author suggests that readers of other Buffett books would find it beneficial as well. Like most books, its persuasive content might not be relevant for readers who are already believers of his principles.
This is also not a `get-rich at once' book. Further readings like The Intelligent Investor and Security Analysis (both written by Benjamin Graham) are necessary for savvy investing. Discipline, morals and experiences are also vital when following his principles.
Readers should also have the mature mindset to determine the usefulness of some principles, which might be out-dated in today's context. In fact, the reason behind the popularity of Buffett and his principles are due to his simple and conservative approach towards investing, something which simple people are attracted to at the start.
Insightful!.......2004-08-06
Warren Buffett is a legendary financial wizard who has built a fortune based on the principles of value investing. Many volumes have been written about his investing approach, but Robert P. Miles' treatise is a bit different from most of the others. The author is obviously a great fan of Buffett - at times, the book borders on plutocratic hagiography - but his all-encompassing admiration lends his work a distinctive tone. Reading this exposition is like hearing a star-struck fan discuss the techniques of a favorite movie star. Dazed admiration helps Miles see patterns, connections and details about Warren Buffett that you might not find in a more objective or more focused tome. If you want a nitty-gritty, pros and cons analysis of Buffett's investing style, go elsewhere. If a down-home and frankly admiring analysis, complete with investing advice based on Buffett's principles, is more your style, we assure you, you've come to the right place. No naysayers allowed.
definitely the best book written on Warren Buffett.......2004-06-19
I've read a lot of books on Warren Buffett and this one is the best reading on the topic available. Robert Miles shares some unique insights into the strategies of this brilliant investor.

Book Description
What is the law of the law? What produces our craven subservience to linguistic norms, and our shocking indifference to the phenomenon of universal suffering? In a path-breaking new work of philosophy, Louis Wolcher seeks to answer these questions from the standpoint of Zen Buddhism.
Bringing an Eastern sensibility into contact with three of the most important themes in Western philosophy, Beyond Transcendence in Law and Philosophy meticulously investigates three of the twentieth century's most important philosophers: Martin Heidegger - on being, Emmanuel Levinas - on ethics, and Ludwig Wittgenstein - on language. In the context of the larger Western obsession with transcending the ordinary, Louis Wolcher argues that the yearning for transcendence is born of the illusion that there is a fundamental difference between the ordinary and the profound. Employing Zen koans and stories to advance a 'deflationary' view of language and knowledge, he goes on to argue that the norms of transcendence to which we cling are not eternal truths but artefacts of desperate minds adrift on a sea of impermanence. What used to seem so majestically True, Right and Just thus shows itself to be utterly mundane: as merely true, right and just. What is left, however, is not nihilism - for clinging to a view of 'nothingness' is just as deluded as clinging to a view of 'somethingness' - but rather a new beginning of compassionate concern for the suffering of others.
Beyond Transcendence in Law and Philosophy is a strikingly original synthesis of Eastern and Western thought. It will enlighten philosophers and legal theorists, as well as those who are interested in or open to the insights of Zen Buddhism.
Customer Reviews:
the un-transcendable of thinking.......2006-08-11
The best way to describe (and recommend) this strange and compelling work of philosophy is to point to its fundamental originality. True, there are many "original" books in the world today - but Louis Wolcher's text does not simply seek to trace questions back to their origins, nor does he simply set out to pursue a fancy of his imagination. Instead, he does something that literally no one else in America has ever done: pull the rug out from underneath the possibility of both the realm of the "imaginary possible" in philosophy, and of the realm of definable and determinable norms of transcendence. The result is a work of a compassionate and yet unrelenting realism. It actually manages to escape the vexing question of the grounding of philosophical claims by illuminating the lack of transcendent desires in any post-Heideggerian and post-Wittgensteinian attempt to re-think the claims of Western philosophy.
Lest anyone think this simply another book in the canon of the anti-canon, it is not inappropriate to point to the work's refusal to reject the canon since such a refusal would indicate another possibility of enshrined transcendence.
What Wolcher does put forward instead is a way of thinking that does not rely on anything but is simply itself within its own transformations and transmutations (which he discusses in terms of the lovely parable of the "third mountain"). I would add to this that the utilization of Zen koans and Zen texts is ultimately accidental: Wolcher never falls into the trap of building up Zen as another form of transcendence. As a result, the ordinary feeling of compassion as well as the ordinariness of suffering that calls forth such compassion, remain un-transcendable, and can only be encircled by a thinking that refuses to present itself as having encircled them.
I recommend this book (which I would judge to be the most radical attempt by a contemporary American philosopher to move past- but not transcend - deconstruction and the philosophy of language)to anyone who thinks, plain and simple. While the book is presented in the guise of academic discourse, its style is accessible - and its vision seductively humble in its stark and certainly un-academic realism.

Book Description
The study of multienzyme systems has advanced considerably during the least decade. The cell is more complicated than classical biochemistry presents it, it contains more structure, and the behaviour of any system of enzymes is more elaborate than can be explained in simple terms. Nevertheless, classical enzymology and metabolism remain central to any modification of the metabolic behaviour of organisms, as attempted by modern biotechnology and drug development techniques.
In this cool, objective look at the current state of the art, internationally respected authors draw attention to the drawbacks, problems, and opportunities associated with this exciting field. The areas covered include problems with current practice, the imposition of human objectives on organisms, understanding health and disease, computer modelling, the increasingly complex picture of cell structure, control and regulation of metabolism, and the general contribution metabolic control is making to biochemistry on a broader canvas.

Book Description
This textbook provides a thorough introduction to Newtonian Mechanics and is intended for university students in physics, astronomy and engineering. It is based on a course for which Dr. Knudsen earned an award for the best teaching at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. More than 100 problems with solutions and 89 worked examples help the student to grasp the essential aspects of the subject, and to develop proficiency in using the powerful methods of Newtonian mechanics. Moreover, the fundamental problem of motion and the concept of inertial frames is faced from the very beginning, and runs through the entire development of classical mechanics. This new and fresh approach is presented in its third edition, which has been revised and enlarged.
Customer Reviews:
Based On An Award-Winning Course In Mechanics.......2002-07-01
This is the best book on introductory Newtonian mechanics that I've read. The examples aren't shown just for "plug-and-chug" purposes as in many others; the authors use them to further develop an idea. As such, each example is important, and there are several. Each exercise is also useful in a way that many undergraduate mechanics exercises aren't. The authors also in their prose express a passion for the subject--always appreciated, and sometimes humorous. [My favorite example is on page 359 of the paperback version. Near the top of the page, following a discussion of Newton's law of universal gravitation: "The greatest achievement in the history of man was completed."]
Outstanding. The best book on Newtonian mechanics available........1998-12-13
I own dozens of books on the subject and this is by far my favorite. It is clearly written with a fine selection of problems. An excellent supplement to this book is THE VARIATIONAL PRINCIPLES OF MECHANICS by Lanczos. I highly recommend these two books for a firm understanding of classical mechanics.
