Customer Reviews:
A Must Buy For Any Quant.......2006-05-03
It is definitely advanced but is not intimidating. Any great book provides the reader with a base of knowledge and then builds from there. Being somewhat familiar with Dr. Campolieti's work, I can definitely say that he is a pioneer in this field and will continue to do great things for analytical finance. It is written using very consistent notation and in a properly paced fashion. This is especially important for those that are new to quantitative finance. The theoretical component of the book provides the reader with a solid base for experimenting with the Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) projects. What I really liked about the hands-on programming component of this book is that it shows the reader that algorithms and results can be rapidly implemented using Excel as the interface and VBA for coding. This dramatically reduces learning time since most financial practioners are already very familiar and comfortable with Excel. Readers that find programming a challenge will benefit from the numerous and well documented projects. Having worked in actuarial, risk management and trading contexts, I can honestly say that being able to deploy analytical applications on the fly is an enormous advantage. Let's not forget that the authors have bundled with this book their code libraries that can be used (perpetually) by the reader independent of the content / projects in this book. This alone is worth more than the book's sticker price.
In terms of more advanced readers, the material presented in this book is not trivial. It elegantly presents difficult topics on many levels. A good understanding of linear algebra, probability, statistics and differential equations will make the material enjoyable. For those not terribly familiar with the "finance" part of mathematical finance, I highly recommend any of John Hull's derivative books as a quick first read and primer on the many financial concepts presented here.
Excellent project implementations and advanced concepts.......2006-04-23
This is a unique book which uses projects to illustrate some of the very complex ideas involved with the pricing of derivatives and the measurement of risk along with some advanced theory. The book builds up from fundamental theory which is so often taken for granted and is written in a clear style. However a sound understanding of mathematical concepts is required. This makes the book desirable as a text book. It also has more advanced concepts which over time can be adopted by practitioners to overcome the basic skewness limitations of the commonly used Black Scholes framework. Of particular interest are the projects that form the latter part of the book. The book is one of the few for example that takes the complexity of short term interest rate models and demonstrates their actual implementation. The attached implementation of these projects on CD ROM along with the reusable mathematical library presents excellent value and makes the book truly unique.
Potential, but lacking..........2006-02-18
They came close with this book, but unfortunately, the first part of the book is just a bit too theoretical for the real world.
If the authors included some real world examples to bring the theory into practice, the book would be a real winner.
The second part of the book again does not present any examples for the projects.
Not looking for cookbook-recipe book, but examples would have made the second part of this book more of a winner.
I am still debating on opening the CD and keeping the book...I will have to digest the theory and make the decision from that point.
Not advanced and not pedagogical........2006-01-05
The word advanced in the book's title is probably adopted to suit the lack of pedagogy in the language and structure. There is nothing advanced about the topics, just standard pricing and risk theory which can be learned as a sequel to Hull by any average mathematics or theoretical physics undergraduates comfortable with contour integrals and green's functions. The math needed goes no further than that: you won't need to know neither measure theory nor any geometry, just your good old real and complex calculus. Yet the approach used still makes it seem that you are tackling something really articulate. Quite disappointing.
Besides this, I believe one good thing about this book is the large amount of projects in its second part. Still, I believe it would have been more sensical to adopt the lingua franca of quants, i.e. C++ (although VBA is also useful to know).
If you want to get to advanced topics in pricing I would follow this chain of books:
-Shreve's Volume II of Stochastic Calculus for Finance,
-Schouten's little book on Levy processes in Finance,
-Cont's book on Financial models with jumps,
-Schouten, Wilmott et al.'s Exotic Options Pricing and Advanced Levy Models.
For the C++ part I think Duffy's is the best.
After these be ready to tackle cutting edge research papers and practice.
Of course these are only opinions, you may find it different.

Book Description
Law, Language, and Legal Determinancy discusses the role of language within law, and the role of philosophy of language in understanding the nature of law. The book argues that the major re-thinking of the common and `common sense' views about law that have been proposed by various recent legal theorists are unnecessary.

RULE-FOLLOWING AND LANGUAGE GAMES.......2002-12-21
How do we follow rules? Is there an unique interpretation to a legal prescription, or language is dubious by nature? This questions are largely discussed in the later work of Brian Bix. In his oeuvre professor Bix confronts some of the most prominent authors of contemporary legal theory and philosophy of language as well. Varying from H.L.A. Hart's "open texture" to Ronald Dworkin's "legal answer thesis", the philosophy subjacent to the legal debate is exposed and revisited. Starting from the radical indeterminacy thesis, professor Bix discuss the (mis)interpretations of the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein's skeptical paradox (cf. "Philosophical Investigations", paragraph 201). Professor Bix argues that Wittgenstein conceptions about rule-following refer only to the "clear cases", i.e., cases which following the rule is reputed self-evident. That is to say: the rule-following thesis is worth only when one do not think before obeying the rule, when there is no "interpretation" in the strong sense of reflection. His point, however, somehow miss the main part of the issue. One possible exegesis of Wittgenstein's secondary philosophy is that all the rules are applied automatically or, at least, we could not determine when one stop to play the "language games". Wittgenstein uses the clear cases just as prototypes, small and simple models for study. Not withstanding the foregoing, professor Bix has exceeded his skills of legal argumentation, bringing forth a strong and well grounded book of jurisprudence.
Book Description
William Cobbett wrote Cottage Economy published in 1821, with a twofold aim. First, to promote his personal philosophy of self-sufficiency, which he viewed as the foundation of family happiness. And second, to instruct country laborers in the arts of brewing beer, making bread, keeping cows, pigs, bees, ewes, poultry, rabbits, and other matters. The book has enjoyed classic status ever since.
Though over 180 years old, Cottage Economy has lost none of its relevance or inspiration for anyone in search of what Cobbett called a good living. Written with Cobbett's typical witand bulldog curmudgeonlinessit deserves its reputation as the founding bible of self-sufficiency and one of the greatest rural reads in the English language.

Quite the best ecology text........2001-06-21
Eugene Odum was the first person to put together plant and animal ecology in a satisfying synthesis, in his Fundamentals of Ecology of 1953.That could have remained the prime textbook for the past five decades, but he eventually tired of producing new editions. Also, he was keen to reach a wider audience, and this is the latest version of the more accessible book that he wrote for the general reader. Two things in particular make the book special. First, Odum focuses on the whole living planet, working down to the level of the individual organisms and populations; most ecology textbooks work from the bottom up, giving a fragmentary view of the overall situation. Second, Odum is almost alone among ecologists in integrating humans completely into his account. The result is a clear and readable book with an urgent and important message for all of us who share the earth.

Book Description
Ganoderma is a fungal pathogen that causes diseases on a variety of perennial crops including oil, palm, tea, rubber and coconut. Basal stem rot of oil palm caused by Ganoderma is considered the single major disease constraint to oil palm production in South East Asia, where losses can reach 80% after repeated planting cycles. Chapters in the book are based on presentations given at regional research workshops, one held in Egham, UK in August 1998, the other in Serdang, Malaysia in October 1998.

A Newbery Award Nominee
This moving story introduces the remarkable character of Pattie Mae Sheals - whose sense of humor, ability to get into "grown folks business," and determination to know the truth will endear her to readers everywhere.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best books I have ever read. .......2006-06-12
"The Legend of Buddy Bush" is indeed one of the best books I have ever read. There are not enough good books for our children to read and this one is at the top of my list.
Pattie Mae is smart and a character that we all can relate to.
not well edited.......2005-09-08
I was appalled by the poor editing of this book. The author is from the neighborhood where the story is set..rural North Carolina. The basic plot is fine, being about a black man in 1947 being accused of attempted rape by a white lady because he didn't get off the sidewalk when she passed by. This is supposed to be based on a true event where said black man is arrested, hauled out of jail by the Klan to be lynched, but escapes to the swamps and then to the North.
However the 12-year-old main character interejects her own stream of consciousness into the first person present tense story. These are the problems I had: She says when her mother gets mad at her, Mother hits her with a plastic spoon.
She says that if she isn't good, she doesn't get to go to grandmother's house to watch RV. She says Grandmother gets a phone and it's YELLOW, and that the phone number is 919-555-1919.
I remember the 50's pretty well and this story takes place before that. No one had a TV in 1947, much less a poor black family who had electricity but still had an outhouse in the back. No one had plastic spoons...they would have been wooden or maybe metal. Phones didn't come in color until the end of the 50's and then they cost more each month. And it was the 60's when prefixes came into play. Before that, it would have been KE 8-1919 or TR 7-5616.
So, the author is interjecting her own memories into this story, and the editor was too young to know the difference. This is too bad, because, while the children reading this may not notice any one of these anachronisms, having done the research on the time and place would have lent a lot of authenticity.
From the pen of Moses.......2005-06-21
I've often railed, in my various Amazon.com reviews, against simplistic children's books. For thousands of adults, children's books (to them) are meant to be straightforward tales of good and evil. The good guys are always good. The bad guys are very bad. And this is especially true for poorly written books that deal with race and racism in America. So it was with great trepidation that I picked up, "The Legend of Buddy Bush". Sure, it had won the coveted Coretta Scott King Award. Sure, it also garnered itself a hard-to-get National Book Award Honor. But I've read plenty of award winners that left a sour taste in my mouth. The fact that this was author Shelia P. Moses' first children's book was not encouraging. Most first time authors make all the usual mistakes. Fortunately for us, Ms. Moses is not most authors.
There are a lot of things in this world that Pattie Mae likes. She likes eating her grandma's plump strawberries straight from the garden when no one's looking. She likes sitting and talking with her grandfather for long periods of time. She likes getting letters from her elder sister in Harlem and dreaming of the day she can leave this poor North Carolina town. And she loves her Uncle Buddy. Buddy's not strictly related to her per say, but he's always been a part of her family, especially since he returned from living in New York City. Now Pattie Mae's grandpa is sick with a brain tumor and the girl really feels she deserves a nice trip into town with Buddy to watch a picture show. But when Buddy refuses to move off the pavement when a white woman passes him, the woman makes a big show of claiming that Buddy tried to make a pass at/rape her. Now Buddy's in the violent hands of the law and it's all Pattie Mae can do to see the two most important men in her life, her grandpa and her uncle, slip away from her for entirely different reasons.
The book bears a great deal of similarity to Mildred Taylor's chronicles of the Logan family. As with Taylor's books, the family in "The Legend of Buddy Bush" are black land holders. Also, they must deal with their white prejudiced neighbors at every turn. But this book stands on its own as well. For one thing, no one here is a perfect saint. Our heroine, Pattie Mae, is apt to silently insult and detest her female relations while placing the men in the family on their own separate pedestals. Her Uncle Buddy is a male chauvinist pig who obeys his father but doesn't think twice about ignoring his mother. Every person in this book is a well-rounded believable human being. They aren't perfect or always heroic. The men boss the women around and the women boss the men. In the end, however, these are people you end up caring for. So when tragedy comes to Uncle Buddy, you hate to watch it happen. You may not feel he's the wonderful guy that Pattie Mae thinks he is, but when she and her family collapse weeping to see him working on a chain gang outside their very home, you understand why.
In the back of the book, Moses gives full credit to the real Buddy Bush and his story. She includes pictures of the barn, house, and courthouse when this tale takes place. She shows us her real grandmother and grandfather and even includes a shot of Buddy Bush himself. She also tells the story of the real Buddy, complete with the elements that are like and unlike those retold in this tale. It gives it that little extra shove that brings the book from being okay to quite good.
Now I wouldn't go handing this book to your six or seven-year-old. Though the heroine is twelve there's plenty of breast squeezing and idle speculation on infidelity to make this a bit of an older reader. Still, if you know a mature child who wants a good jolt of historical fiction, aside from anything Mildred Taylor wrote (and much shorter at that) is this little tale. It's funny and quite sad, but not depressing in a pathological way. A title well worth reading.
A Touching Book!.......2004-02-18
The Legend of Buddy Bush was one of the Best Books I have ever read. It teaches love, understanding, life, and loss. Shelia P. Moses really captures the reader. I couldn't put the book down and I thought it was wonderful. When I finished, I wished I hadn't because I loved it and I think that it really led me to understand how things were "back then."
A wonderfully compelling tale.

Book Description
This landmark work chronicles the origin and evolution of solid state physics, which grew to maturity between 1920 and 1960. The book examines the early roots of the field in industrial, scientific and artistic efforts and traces them through the 1950s, when many physicists around the world recognized themselves as members of a distinct subfield of physics research centered on solids. The book opens with an account of scientific and social developments that preceded the discovery of quantum mechanics, including the invention of new experimental means for studying solids and the establishment of the first industrial laboratories. The authors set the stage for the modern era by detailing the formulation of the quantum field theory of solids. The core of the book examines six major themes: the band theory of solids; the phenomenology of imperfect crystals; the puzzle of the plastic properties of solids, solved by the discovery of dislocations; magnetism; semiconductor physics; and collective phenomena, the context in which old puzzles such as superconductivity and superfluidity were finally solved. All readers interested in the history of science will find this absorbing volume an essential resource for understanding the emergence of contemporary physics.

Lose Your Mother: A Journey Along the Atlantic Slave Route
ASIN: 1578068665 |
Book Description
Over the course of his brief career, Melvin Dixon (1950-1992) became an important critical voice for African American scholarship as well as a widely read chronicler of the African American gay experience. His novels Trouble the Water and Vanishing Rooms still receive considerable attention, as do his collections of poetry and his major work of criticism, Ride Out the Wilderness: Geography and Identity in Afro-American Literature.
In A Melvin Dixon Critical Reader, scholars Justin A. Joyce and Dwight A. McBride have collected, for the first time in a single volume, the eight critical essays Dixon published during his lifetime. The volume divides Dixon's critical output into three categories"Writing Black Diaspora Theory," "Writing African American Cultural Theory," and "Writing African American Literary Criticism"and closes with a speech Dixon gave to the queer writers' conference, OutWrite, in 1992, just months before he succumbed to an AIDS-related illness.
What emerges from the essays collected here is the voice of a confident, engaging scholar, who tackles a wide range of literary and cultural topics. Dixon examines the trickster characters of Charles W. Chestnutt, the friendship between the Haitian novelist Jacques Roumain and Langston Hughes, and the aesthetic importance of black speech in the novels of Gayl Jones. His address to OutWrite serves as a poignant record of Dixon's knack to wax elegiac and poetic, and to synthesize criticism, activism, and art. Joyce and McBride's introduction places Dixon in the contexts of African American cultural history and gay/lesbian critical discourse.
