In Good Government in the Tropics, Judith Tendler questions widely prevailing views about why governments so often perform poorly and about what causes them to improve. Drawing on a set of four cases involving public bureaucracies at work under the direction of an innovative state government in Brazil, the book offers findings of significance to the current debates about organization of the public-sector workplace, public service delivery, decentralization, and the interaction between government and civil society. The case chapters represent four different sectors, each traditionally spoken for by its distinct experts, literatures, and public agnecies -- rural preventive health, small enterprise development, agricultural extension for small farmers, and employment-creating public works construction and drought relief. With findings that cut across these sectoral boundaries, the book raises questions about the policy advice proferred by the international donor community. It shifts the terms of the prevailing debate away from mistrust of government toward an understanding of the circumstances under which public servants become truly committed to their work and public service improves dramatically.

Good book on good government in Brazil.......2007-01-04

This is a great study of how government can be a positive force in develoment. When much of development discourse is based on serving the poor without the involvement of government, this case study of Ceara region in Brazil shows how "good government" can improve the lives of their people. In the case of preventative health, it was amazing how the central government established a programs that gave local citizens jobs and training and a system in which rent-seeking behavior could be reduced. Everyone in the community had more of an investment in their communities and workers were proud of their work. Overall, it's a good book, especially as it provides an example in which not all governments in developing countries are corrupt.

Getting women into public office is just the first step in the challenge of creating governance and accountability systems that respond to women's needs and protect their rights. The essays in this volume answer these questions from different angles, using case studies from around the world. Don't waste your time/money - get a lawyer.......2006-10-04

I purchased this book to help file forms on a stepparent adoption. I submitted the form that was included on the CD "Petition to Terminate Parental Rights of the Alleged Father". To my dismay, they told me that I was using an "outdated" template, as the Civil Code 7409(a) that was referenced was repealed 10 years ago. I sought help from an attorney who told me that this is now under Family Code Section 7611. I do not trust the forms now, as I fear there may be other mistakes that I do not know of, as I am not an attorney.

I emailed Nolo to see if they had any updated version of this form, but did not get a reply.

Trust me, save yourself time, money and frustration by getting proper legal advice from a family law attorney.

DO NOT buy this book, or you may be embarrassed when you try to file your paperwork and it is marred with incorrect entries.

An easy and at times fun way to save thousands on adopting.......1999-02-25

This book is wonderful for anyone who wants to adopt their spouse's child and has the consent of the other bio-parent (or other stipulation such as the death of the bio-parent, etc.). It not only provides needed forms, but also has word-by-word examples of the documents you will need to type yourself (for me, that was actually fun!) Additionally, if you live in Los Angeles as I did during the process, it gives you special instructions for filing in L.A. county - very helpful! I had to pay only a $700 assessment fee and 2 or 3 small filing fees and the whole process, from filing the initial petition to the final hearing (which is especially enjoyable) was completed in under 4 months! And the experience brought me even closer to our 5 year old little girl as well as my wife! A lawyer quoted me legal fees of "$2,500 to $3,000, not including filing and assessment fees" before I found this book. You will not only save money, but come away with an amazing sense of accomplishment and a renewed appreciation for your family. I highly recommend this book!

Again, does it follow that Being, if one, is motionless? Why should it not move, the whole of it within itself, as parts of it do which are unities, e.g. this water? Again, why is qualitative change impossible? But, further, Being cannot be one in form, though it may be in what it is made of. (Even some of the physicists hold it to be one in the latter way, though not in the former.) Man obviously differs from horse in form, and contraries from each other.

Readable Aristotle is not an oxymoron........2007-07-05

I found this translation easier to read than other translations of Aristotle. It is much easier to unpack and follow, only the content needs to be wrestled with, which is a project in and of itself. It includes the Becker numbers, which makes it easier to have a discussion with a group.

Ernest Hemingway, Winner Take Nothing (Scribner's, 1933)

Arguably Hemingway's finest book of short stories, Winner Take Nothing contains fourteen relatively short and always spare looks at various stages of life. What seem, upon first reading, to be nothing more than frameworks or outlines take on more meat upon reflection. Hemingway lets the reader fill in the small details, guiding his imagination rather than manipulating it. This does mean that the onus is on the reader more than usual with this book; Hemingway's work is meant to be thought-provoking rather than escapist. If you can make it to the end of "A Clean, Well-Lighted Place," the second story in the book, and reflect on it without feeling anything, then the book's probably not for you. Those who approach it with the proper mindset, however, will find it to be full of opportunities to plumb one's own imagination. ****

Certainly not the best introduction to Hemingway.......1999-12-27

Perhaps I was distracted when I heard these short stories, but they seemed to lack substance. The characters seemed like passing shadows - I never knew them well enough to have any solid emotional attachment. The stories were all very short, and most felt incomplete. If you are just starting with Hemingway, try something else first. If you like his style, I'm sure you'll love this collection.

Gain nothing, lose nothing.......1999-05-24

This was the first Hemingway book I have read and I was surprised. I always imagined his books were boring and completely symbolibic to the point that you don't understand it. However I enjoyed this book and all the short stories involved in this. All the stories were interesting and connected the theme that the "winner takes nothing" in different situations. I enjoyed the fact that since he probably wrote this in Europe, Hemingway weaved French and sometimes German into the dialogue. Also in one story Fitzgerald is mentioned as a wild child. "Winner take nothing" is an easy book to understand and follow, and the stories are original.
