Book Description

From Nobel Laureate Robert M. Solow comes this second edition of his classic text, Growth Theory, to which he has added six new chapters. The book begins with the author's Nobel Prize Lecture "Growth Theory and After" (1987), followed by the six original chapters of the first edition. The author maintains that basic growth theory is still best summarized in these chapters. The publication of the first edition in 1970 coincided with a worldwide productivity slowdown; during that time very little work occurred on growth theory. It wasn't until the 1980s that a surge of new research appeared, including the work of Roemer, Lucas, Grossman/Helpman, Aghion, and Howitt. The second half of the book deals with this relatively recent surge, often referred to as "the new endogenous growth theory." As a bridge to the six new chapters, Solow includes an essay entitled "Intermezzo" in which he discusses this transition. The author recasts his model to help the reader compare the relationships among all models; he deals rather tersely, for reasons explained in the book, with "AK" theory, convergence, and international cross-section studies rather tersely. The author concludes by drawing some lessons from the new growth theory and suggests where gaps may be filled in future research. Although Solow disagrees strongly with much of the recent research, he is quick to acknowledge some of its outstanding contributions. This second edition is essential reading for graduate courses in macroeconomics as well as courses on growth theory at both undergraduate and graduate levels. No other book provides this broad overview of the whole field and its evolution.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars On the book.......2003-05-20

I am compelled to write a review after reading with utter disbelief the negative comments that some fool posted above.
He/she rambles how Solow's book does not account for human capital. Well, if that person had actually bothered reading the book (or even taking some basic growth theory classes, but after reading his/her syntax we can safely assume that it is too much to be wished for), he/she would realize that the book DOES INDEED cover various variations/enrichments of the standard Solow, including indeed the Lucas Human capital variation.

This book is a nice addition for any growth economist/student library. To the "reviewer" above: get an education before you start even THINKING about criticizing economists of professor Solow's stature.

5 out of 5 stars It's a classical economic book........2001-05-16

This book is a classical book, it's very important to read because is one of the most important theory, if you are agree or disagree no matter. If you want criticizing the neoclassical theory you need to understand all the Solow argument. I'm not very convinced of this theory, but it's fundamental to read this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Masterly Study.......2000-07-16

This is a masterly study. Solow speaks about the old neoclassical growth theory in the first half of the book and then goes on in the second half to review the developments of new growth theory that started in the mid eighties. He comments on the essence of Lucas' work (on human capital), Romer's work (on endogenous technical change), the work of Grossman and Helpman (on quality ladders) and that of Aghion and Howitt (on creative destruction). These references have now reached the status of classics in endogenous growth theory. Solow provides penetrating insights into the new developments. The book is a must for any student of the subject interested in traversing the bridge that connects the old to the new growth theory.

1 out of 5 stars Solow is out of time.......2000-06-05

In his book Solow describes his growth-theory. But this theory already is out of time. It does not apply to many countries. Why not you might ask. Well first, Solow leaves a very important variable out, namely human capital. Second, Solow makes assumptions, which obviously will never hold, like an equal productionfunction for every country but also equal technological availability for each country. I do not have to explain why this will not hold for it speaks for itself. Many third-world countries have based their policies on Solow's growth-theory in the sixties, seventies and eigthies, but without any succes. It is time for these countries to change policies and to discover other growth and development strategies to catch-up with developed countries, specially with ecommerce comming up.

              5 out of 5 stars Frank's best short story.......2003-10-14

Fabozzi has a lot of intuitive books, but I think this is the best concise book out there that provides a focused discussion on Convexity and Duration. Lucid on all aspects of bond convexity and a very good analysis of option embedded bonds with negative convexity.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive review of fundamental concepts........2000-05-25

the book gives the fundamentals of risk management. You can grasp the idea of duration, convexity and other commonly used terms. The book especially tells how you will use the terms, not to derive them. I recommend the book, it is indeed useful

This bible is really great as it gets right down to the bones of the questions so many of us have. It is very well written, and of all the bibles I've picked up (and later put down), this one is the most "user friendly." When you're busy, that makes all the difference in the world. The bible is NOT "preachy," and the author uses simple yet effective one line headings above passages that immediately give you a feel for where the content is heading, making it easier to choose what you want to read that day. I have a great respect for the writer as he did extensive research to create a product that your common, non-indoctrinated individual can understand. I would highly recommend this bible to anyone who is confused and doesn't know which version they should buy. They should buy this one!

Compiled out of quotations, newspaper articles, different folk songs and own experiences with Austria-Hungary and Germany through World War One Karl Kraus wrote this book to show the people of the time after the War their own absurd behavement. The book is written as a Drama, but without a continuous story it shows the war with examples of Journalists, Politics, Aristocrats, Workers, Soldiers. It is an important forefather of Brecht's epic drama. To understand the different quotations you should know a bit about the Austrian and German history and the Emperors of the time.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant satire from a modern Cassandra.......1997-11-14

Karl Kraus is still well known in Germany, and deserves to be better known here. THE LAST DAYS OF MANKIND, 'a play to be performed on Mars' is one of the most trenchant satires written this century. Kraus compiled the play from newspaper articles, official bulletins, and overheard conversations during World War One in Vienna. He actually performed excerpts from this damning indictment of the human race during the war. I wish that someone would translate all of this book from the German; one flaw of this edition is the note early on which states that 'since modern Americans are not familiar with minutiae of the life of the Emperor Franz Joseph, these chapters have been cut.' With all due respect, if we did not know something about the later Habsburgs we would not be reading THE LAST DAYS OF MANKIND in the first place. The lowest pit in Kraus' hell is reserved for those vultures who treated wartime reporting as popular entertainment--which makes him an uncomfortably modern writer. Please, please beg borrow or steal a copy of this book and try to get it reprinted in a full translation!

                                  Book Description

Physical techniques such as X-ray crystallography, IR spectroscopy and solution-phase NMR spectroscopy have played key roles in the development of supramolecular chemistry.
In recent years other spectroscopic techniques have been applied, expanding the range of information obtainable. The most widely used technique is solid-state NMR spectroscopy but techniques such as neutron scattering and NQR spectroscopy can yield significant information.
Computational approaches are now becoming powerful complementary methods to experimental techniques and this book reviews the application of these methods to supramolecular systems.
The ten chapters provide up-to-date information on the applications of spectroscopic and computational techniques to a wide range of supramolecular systems:
Solid State NMR Studies of Host-Guest Materials
                                  Infrared Studies of Zeolite Complexes
                                  NQR Studies of Inclusion Compounds
Neutron Scattering Studies of Zeolite Complexes
Solid State NMR Studies of Catalytic Reactions on Molecular Sieves
Recent Advances in Computational Studies of Zeolites
Theoretical Studies of Cyclodextrins and their Inclusion Complexes
Computer Modelling of the Structures of Host-Guest Complexes
                                  Computational Studies of Clathrate Hydrates
Ab initio Electronic Structure Calculations on Endohedral Complexes of the C 60 Cluster.
This timely book will prove to be of great value to supramolecular researchers who are familiar with the spectroscopic techniques but who wish to extend their knowledge of the computational methods (and vice versa), to supramolecular researchers working in allied areas whose work would benefit from applying spectroscopic and computational methods, and finally to workers just entering the fascinating area of supramolecular chemistry.

                                          Book Description

The Legend of Seyavash comes from the middle section of the Shahnameh, Iran's national epic by the poet Ferdowsi (c 940-c 1020) and presents a world of warfare, military prowess, romance, guile, and fierce tribal loyalty. Ferdowsi's epic style and mastery of poetic organization, however, is matched by the psychological and ethical depth of his insight and his concerns for the primal struggle between good and evil, and man's continual attempt to create justice and civilized order out of the chaos of human greed and cruelty.

The Legend of Seyavash begins with the stuff of romance—a foreign girl of royal blood, found as a fugitive and introduced into the king's harem, gives birth to a son, Seyavash, who is raised not by his father the king, but by the great hero Rostam. On Seyavash's return home Sudabeh, his stepmother, attempts to seduce him, and when he spurns her she accuses him of having attempted to rape her. He undergoes a trial by fire to prove his innocence, and goes on to battle successfully against Iran's rival, Turan, concluding a truce with the Turanian king, Afrasyab, on amicable terms. But Seyavash's father, Kavus, insists that Seyavash surrender the Turanian hostages to slaughter, and with a conflicted conscience and no one to turn to, Seyavash flees to the Turanian court, where he is first given safe harbor, but is once again abandoned. Dick Davis has made a masterful translation of the poem and written a penetrating introduction.

5 out of 5 stars Shah Nameh (Shiavaksh episode) : English translation........2005-02-27

Dr. Dick Davis has once again provided us with an admirable translation of a section of the Shah Nameh in his latest publication: "The Legend of Seyavash". The Shah Nameh (literally meaning The Book of Kings) is the national epic of Persia/Iran and is an epic poem of roughly 50,000 lines, composed by one of Persia's greatest poet, Abulqasim Firdausi and completed in 1010 A.D. The "Shiavaksh Episode" translated in this monograph is a little over 2500 lines and thus represents a small fraction of the entire poem. The translation which covers 144 pages of this monograph is preceded by a 28-page penetrating and insightful "Introduction" followed by a "List of Characters". The "Introduction" is an erudite criticism and interpretation of the Shah Nameh, it's historicity and it's relevance to the Persian culture. The Shah Nameh is a national epic far vaster in scope than it's Western equivalents, concerned as it is with the history of Persia/Iran, from the time of the creation of the world to the Arab/Islamic conquest of that country around 640 A.D.
The Seyavash episode comprises the middle legendary section of the Shah Nameh and involves around a legendary prince named Seyavash as he struggles with his youth, his adulthood and with his father (the ruling monarch). His life is a constant struggle between the good and evil as he is a perpetual victim of the king's machinations, finally dying as a result of his father's actions.
The English translation is masterful, and very readable. With his previous translations of other portions of the Shah Nameh
already in print, Dr. Davis is now admirable poised to translate the complete Shah Namah in the English language, this time hopefully using the Djalal Khaleghi-Motlagh edition, so that a millennium and a century later one may read a good English translation of the Shah Nameh.

Dick Davis provides a full verse translation of one of the principle stories of the Shahnameh. This translation of the Legend of Seyavash is an excellent place to start into the Shahnameh.
