5 out of 5 stars An oldie but a goodie.......2007-02-06

This book was one of the first one the scene in term of reading people. Granted, some of the material may seem outdated, but much of it is grounded in good basic pscyhology. If you want something a little more cutting edge, then check out David Lieberman's You Can Read Anyone. Lieberman's book is filled with specific techniques for many different situations, and his stuff is always very practical.

3 out of 5 stars Generally Good Information In A Dated Book.......2006-05-12

I have read several books on body language, and find this book in the middle of the pack. The general information in the book is good overall, though rarely surprising. Although body language probably does not change within a culture very rapidly, this book is very dated, and was, in fact, originally published in 1971. The book betrays its age by references to elaborate hair grooming and preening customs among hippies, and an extensive analysis of smoking behavior during business negotiations, which, while still a factor in some predominantly Asian countries, is now a nearly defunct custom in most of the west, certainly in corporate America. While people interested in the history of body language may find the accounts of pipe lighting and cigarette extinguishing practices interesting, it is largely a distraction. The illustrations also reveal the age of the book: they are all black and white pen and ink drawings, and while they are not terrible, there are much better illustrations available now.

Having said all that, there is some good information in the book, and I think the book would be especially useful to people new to thinking consciously about body language. I like the quotations that begin every section: everyone from Shakespeare to Pliny the Elder is quoted, and they really do set the tone for the section that follows.

Interestingly, one of the reasons many people are interested in body language is in the field of romance, and while the dust jacket primes the reader to expect a full accounting of flirtation, in reality the book only devotes four pages to "courtship;" at any rate there are many better books specifically geared to that on the market. The book does offer some genuine insight into posturing in business negotiations, though, and I can say that while there are no Earth-shattering revelations presented, the book is worth reading for that set of insights alone.

On balance, I would probably give this book three and a half stars, but I can't give it four because it's just too dated. It is a decent introduction to body language, but I would look at other more recent books first.

3 out of 5 stars To old and outdated! .......2005-10-24

Actually this books was recommended by another Amazon reader. Has some good reviews but just didn't do it for me. Small book not enough information! I browsed right through it in no time. If I were you I would go with something with more pages and more info. This book did make me realize that I already new most of the body language signs. My mistake.....I recommend a book on face reading.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting book, a little lacking on content.......2005-02-27

"How to Read a Person Like a Book" is an interesting book about reading a person's body language in order to interpret what they are feeling. This concept is obviously interesting to all of us as beening able to determine when a person is communicating to you non-verbally has a lot of potential uses.

The book unfortunately is quite old. While body language is unlikely to change much over the years, the language used is obviously older. The book does a good job of explaining that you can't just take one signal and immediately translate it into a message, but rather you have to look for groups of signals.

The organization of the book is acceptable, but I wish the formatting were better in order to reference it better. While the pictures included were good and helpful, I wish there were more of them. I also wish there were a few pictures in an index in order to practice.

The content of the book however is good and very informative. I recommend this book. 4 out of 5 stars.

The First Comprehensive Guide to Body Talk

More than an introduction to the new art of "people reading". This illustrated, no-nonsense manual shows you how to spot the hidden social, sexual, and emotional meaning behind the gestures of people you know - or would like to know better - by learning to read the language that everyone uses, but nobody speaks.

5 out of 5 stars A handbook for all Risk Professionals.......2003-05-03

This book offers comprehensive coverage of market, credit and operational risks in all aspects. It covers the technical modeling and its interplay with the external regulations by which an integrated risk approach is governed. It includes a critical review of the current regulatory environment and analyses the different proposals for the next Bank of International Settlements (BIS) accord, now scheduled for 2005.

Attention is given to different measurement approaches of market, credit and operational risks as well as the key assumptions and conditions for an integrated approach as required in the coming Basel Accord. More specifically, it provides a framework for the design, operation, viewing the policies, methodologies, data collection and infrastructure use to support risk management.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It covers with great competence all the aspects of risk management. The emphasis placed on risk control and the building blocks for a successful integration of all three risk types is highlighted in the light of recent events.

I recommend this book to all academics and professionals and also encourage its use in graduate course in risk management bank management.

From the supplier: Standard and Poor's Insurance Rating Services has revised its capital adequacy model governing reinsurance recoverables. Credit risk factors for reinsurance recoverables have been refined and the initial statutory surplus amount for the model has also been refined. Measures of capital strength depend upon a property/casualty insurance company's particular risks rather than industrywide operating leverage ratios.

                              Book Description

Corn occupied an important place in the lives of many Native communities that lived along the Upper Missouri River. In this landmark book, George F. Will and George E. Hyde introduce readers to some fifty varieties of native corn discovered in the Missouri Valley. Equally important, they provide an indispensable overview of Indian agricultural techniques there, including methods of harvesting and storing the crop, the preparation of corn for food, and the role of the crop in intertribal and Indian-white trade. Corn was not only grown, traded, and eaten, it also had spiritual significance. A final contribution of this book is a discussion of the presence and value of corn in American Indian myth, religion, and ritual.

                              5 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2007-06-04

If you are a gardener, are interested in Native American culture, and especially if you are both, you may value this as highly as I do. Through interviews with surviving women who remembered the details of their tribes' agricultural methods, and the way of life/religion that went with them, the authors have made an important contribution in an area that was undervalued at the time (the early 1900's). But thank goodness they had the foresight to put this information to paper. The book describes tools, varieties, planting methods, and agricultural customs of the Upper Missouri tribes. Thanks to the authors' preservation work, and the work of others, some of the varieties mentioned can still be found. If you are interested, google up the Seed Saver's Exchange in Iowa, and add a new dimension to your gardening.

With animals, the jackal is prepotent over the dog, as is stated by Flourens, who made many crosses between these animals; and this was likewise the case with a hybrid which I once saw between a jackal and a terrier. I cannot doubt, from the observations of Colin and others, that the ass is prepotent over the horse; the prepotency in this instance running more strongly through the male than through the female ass.

1885. Part One of Two. Darwin, the British naturalist who became famous for his theories of evolution and natural selection, writes in the introduction: The object of this work is not to describe all the many races of animals which have been domesticated by man, and of the plants which have been cultivated by him; even if I possessed the requisite knowledge, so gigantic an undertaking would be here superfluous. It is my intention to give under the head of each species only such facts as I have been able to collect or observe, showing the amount and nature of the changes which animals and plants have undergone whilst under man's dominion, or which bear on the general principles of variation. Contents: Domestic Dogs and Cats; Horses and Asses; Pigs-Cattle-Sheep-Goats; Domestic Rabbits; Domestic Pigeons; Fowls; Duck-Goose-Peacock-Turkey-Guinea Fowl-Canary Bird-Goldfish-Hive Bees-Silk Moths; Cultivated Plants: Cereal and Culinary Plants; Fruits-Ornamental Trees-Flowers; On Bud Variation and On Certain Anomalous Modes of Reproduction and Variation; and Inheritance. Having offered offered his book as a contribution to science, Darwin discovered to his dismay that it was received as an affront by many scientists & as a sacrilege by the clergy. To answer the criticism of his theory, Darwin published 2 vol. in 1868 to demonstrate that evolution was obvious to any observer of nature. Darwin assembled a mass of proof -- & a hypothesis about species reversion. Vol. 1 contains a meticulous analysis of various aspects of plant & animal life, including an inventory of varieties & their physical & behavioral characteristics, & an invest'n. of the impact of a species surrounding environ. & the role that both natural & forced changes in this environ. have had.

                                                    Book Description

The Winds of Change places the horrifying carnage unleashed on New Orleans, Mississippi, and Alabama by Hurricane Katrina in context.

Climate has been humanity's constant, if moody, companion. At times benefactor or tormentor, climate nurtured the first stirrings of civilization and then repeatedly visited ruin on empires and peoples. Eugene Linden reveals a recurring pattern in which civilizations become prosperous and complacent during good weather, only to collapse when climate changes -- either through its direct effects, such as floods or drought, or indirect consequences, such

as disease, blight, and civil disorder.

The science of climate change is still young, and the interactions of climate with other historical forces are much debated, but the evidence mounts that

climate loomed over the fate of societies from arctic Greenland to the Fertile Crescent and from the lost cities of the Mayans in Central America to the rain forests of Central Africa. Taking into account the uncertainties in both science and the historical record, Linden explores the evidence indicating that climate has been a serial killer of civilizations. The Winds of Change looks at the present and then to the future to determine whether the accused killer is on the prowl, and what it will do in the future.

The tragedy of New Orleans is but the latest instance in which a region prepared for weather disasters experienced in the past finds itself helpless when nature ups the ante. In the closing chapters, Linden explores why warnings about the dangers of climate change have gone unheeded and what is happening with climate today, and he offers perhaps the most explicit look yet at what a haywire climate might do to us. He shows how even a society prepared to absorb such threshold-crossing events as Katrina, the killer heat wave in Europe in 2003, or the floods in the American Midwest in the 1990s can spiral into precipitous decline should such events intensify and become more frequent.

The Winds of Change places climate change, global warming, and the resulting instability in historical context and sounds an urgent warning for the future.

I thought it was a very good introduction to climate change. It covers:
                                                    1) The history of the young science of climate change;
                                                    2) Basic concepts in how energy from the sun is distributed by the world's oceans and atmosphere, and how this creates weather patterns and affects the earth's climate;
                                                    3) How scientists currently believe the earth's climate has changed through the ages;
                                                    4) Techniques that are used to determine how the earth's climate has changed over the past thousands of years;, and
                                                    5) Reasons why understanding climate change is so important.

The book's main theme is that a stable climate has been vital to the development and survival of civilization. If the climate had not been fairly stable for the past 4,000 years the human race would not be where it is today. But this stability cannot and should not be taken for granted. In fact, a very large body of evidence indicates that in the past the earth's climate has changed quickly and radically many times through the ages, and we may be on the verge of another radical shift. The effect of such a shift (or shifts, as the the climate 'flickers' back and forth between brief warmer and cooler periods before stabilizing again) would be calamities unprecedented since the dawn of civilzation.

This is not a book about green-house gasses. The first two-thirds of the book hardly mention C02 and methane at all. And in the final chapters the focuses on the evidence that the climate IS changing, and the consequences of that change, and doesn't spend much time on the debate about humankind's part in it, other than citing studies showing that of 700 peer-reviewed journal articles between 1993 and 2003 regarding modern climate change, "not one took issue with the consensus that humans are changing climate."

Minor criticisms: some sections of the book include technical explanations that were so complicated that I glossed over them; certain parts of the book emphasize that much of what we 'know' about what the climate was doing thousands of years ago are just theories, while in other places he states them as 'facts'; and many of the little charts at the start of each chapter look very technical and official, most label only one axis, so that they're essentially meaningless.

I learned a lot from this book, and recommend it to others. People should read it (or a similar book on the same topic) before becomping opinionated on the issue of global warming and climate change.

4 out of 5 stars Quality material in a sea of junk-science.......2007-04-30

I was pleased, overall. The author has the credentials to discuss the topic with some authority (unlike some other books I've read recently...) The beginning is somewhat slow; it seemed to re-cover historical ground (i.e. the Norse experiment in Iceland and Greenland) that was already discussed at length by Jarred Diamond in "Collapse."

The best part of the book was the explanation of the mechanics of the oceans: how temperature and salinity work to create currents and climate.

I agree with those other reviewers who though the book could have used a bit more focus. Overall, however, WoC is a very informative read: scientific without being technical and boring. As a non-scientist, I thought this was very accessible. Quality material in a sea of rhetoric and junk-science.

                                                    Very educational. Recommended.

Using the known history of climate change, together with a discussion of the kinds of scientific evidence, provides the basis for conclusions regarding the human factor.

Dismissing all chnage as somehow normal (or ignoring it regarding policy) clearly is unacceptable and dangerous. As "practical" people report to the government (only to be edited, delayed, given scant attention) other practical folks like the insurance industry and some investors show increasing awareness.

Draw your own conclusions; to me immediate and meaningful action are required with real policy changes. It may force some settled business interests to change but seems critical, healthy, and could provide new industries and jobs in the process. Many of these jobs by their very nature could not be shipped overseas so pracical politicians and business people for even selfish motives may come around. Will it be soon enough?

5 out of 5 stars The Pre-historical Perspective to Climate Change.......2007-02-18

Linden goes to great effort to describe climate changes in the past, such as the Little Ice Age. He relates fallen civilizations such as the Vikings of Greenland and the Mayans to climate change. Linden calls climate change the serial killer of civilizations. It is more of a flicker than a change.

Because global warming is a different kind of climate change than the climate changes described here (as those during the Ice Ages) there has to be a modest jump that is impossible to avoid. Linden's approach is important in that it shows how climate change inevitably will occur. It suggests that increasing carbon dioxide emissions, caused by humans, is like teasing the serial killer.

The book should not be considered a complete guide to global warming, but it looks at climate change through a unique perspective.

3 out of 5 stars good topic, but i was hoping for more indepth info.......2006-12-17

I left the field of physics twenty years ago, and as a graduate physicist I am now doing social science research into information systems. But I like to stay informed about current developments in physics. And certainly a unified theory of the fundamental forces of nature is attracting a lot of attention from both specialists and laymen alike. I knew that gauge theories are important for a unified theory, and nobody interested in physics could escape the renewed interest through the awarding of the 1999 Nobel Prize in physics to Veltman and 't Hooft. So I bought this classic text of Chris Quigg. Many popular books on modern physics (e.g. Bedersen, 1999) quote this text. By no means I was disappointed. Of course the mathematics is often difficult, but the author is starting each chapter outlining what the fundamental ideas are. And that alone makes the book a good read. The book has nine chapters, and each chapter is concluded with an assessment or a reflection on the contents, which are highly understandable. Many of the problems of 1983, when the book was published, are still open today. It is didactically very suited as textbook or reference book for those physicists wishing to specialize in high energy physics.

Baby Precious Always Shines, a delightful selection from the 300 love notes that Alice B. Toklas accidentally deposited with the rest of Gertrude Stein's papers in the Beinecke Library at Yale, would not have been possible before the 1980s, when the locked cabinet in which they were kept was finally opened to scholars. In her excellent introduction, Kay Turner (whose other books include I Dream of Madonna: Women's Dreams of the Goddess of Pop) explains that with their baby talk and constant blessings, the notes provide "a tantalizing mosaic of a marriage between two women that was built to last." Composed in the "word-inverted, long-breathed, rolling, repetitive, refluent style that Stein invented," they touch on everyday events in the Stein-Toklas household and reiterate Stein's love and desire for Toklas. Many seem to have been left for Toklas to find in the morning beside the manuscripts that Stein had written during the night. A few were written by Toklas to Stein. Turner also offers a convincing new reading of Stein's famously obscure "cows" (in A Book Concluding with As a Wife Has a Cow: A Love Story and elsewhere), previously thought to signify female orgasm; she argues that Stein and Toklas subscribed to the "cult of regularity" that swept Europe in the first decades of the 20th century. Indeed, the love notes, despite their Steinian verbal play, leave little doubt that the recurring cows, "now sweet smelly and complete," are bowel movements--further evidence, for Turner, of the women's extraordinary intimacy, their love "express[ing] itself daily in the rituals of bodily caretaking."

                                                    Book Description

Off and on, during the entire period they were together, Gertrude and Alice wrote each other little love notes.Calling her "wifey" and most often addressing her as "baby precious," Stein scribbled her love for Toklas in quick moments of unselfconscious desire, notes that are small but significant testimonies to her long-lived love. And on occasion, Toklas penned or typed letters back to her "husband."These notes are brief, mantra-like enticements: tender, beseeching, caring and confessing, funny and game, sexually-charged and sincere, quotidian and queer, but always passionate. Each one marks the pleasures--infrequently, the pains--of married love. When fitted together, the notes create a tantalizing mosaic of a marriage between two women that was built to last.

How wonderful to read about the emotions of what is sometimes considered to be "deviant" love. I believe they would each be honored to know that their true relationship is public and, for the most part, that people are touched by their genuine caring for each other. I highly recommend this book, especially for those people who find it hard to understand relationships between same-sex couples.

What a hoot! Kay Turner has done it again, producing a book that's both entertaining and eye-opening -- a delightful-as-usual combination of the scholarly and hilarious. Brava! A wonderful gift for and/or from yer girlfriend.

Just imagine having your love notes found, analyzed and published for the world to see? Well, this is it. One of the world's most famous and iconic couples' lyrical notes to each other are here for all to share. Should it have been done? Some may say 'no', but considering the fact that they are by Stein, one of the most well-known, unread writers in history, and Toklas, whose place in history largely hinges on her hashish fudge, I'd say 'why not?' These ladies have long been used to public curiosity and scrutiny and became household names during their 1934-35 visit to the US. The introductory essay alone, though scholarly, is worth the price of admission---"Having a cow" will take on a whole new meaning in your vocabulary!
